  1. Bruhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh Just finished Chapter 1, the ending was hype I saw some people dis Okarin but I love him, and literally every other character that may or may not matter. Kurisu-tina, Ruka, Mayushii, Daru, Ferin, Moeka, love them. The banter between characters is hilarious, the art design is AMAZING, I love the VA's, and the story is really getting me pumped up. Crazy shit going down, super duper excited to see what is to come

  2. Hello everyone, have you seen the beta site already? http://beta.fuwanovel.net/ Thank you for noticing, but there's also one other theme available right now through the theme picker (or this link: http://beta.fuwanovel.net/?theme=summer-sky). Having the Oldschool Cool theme as the default was intentional in order not to alieante users too much, but the new theme system allows to change the site up completely, and drastically, so please look forward to it. It's currently undergoing another rewrite (feature-par right now, so I'm finally adding new stuff), but the "Games" section will be disabled until we've figured out the direction we're going in with the VN information we want to display. For that reason I need one, or multiple banners, like these old ones focusing on "featured" releases: Ideally we'd have multiple of them, and I'd really like to have multiple just to point to the different parts of the site: Blog, Forums, Reviews(, optional: TL Moon) in a flashy manner. The required dimensions for this display are 1024px by 354px, but I won't limit your creativity here, so please go crazy if you want to make them full-screen width. Keeping the aspect ratio would be ideal, though. So please, get those creative juices going, so we can push for a final, first release of the new site, so we can push the direction of the site for the immediate, and obviously long-term, future!

It's okay everyone, if Insem trolls the entire world again we can all rest assured knowing that a quality TL formed out of pure hate for selling the game to Sekai Project without any form of Atlas/Google translate will be released for Aokana on April 20th in 5 (that's right 5!) different languages. That's faster than any professionally hired translator I have ever seen in my entire life, let alone a translator of 5 different languages. What an incredible team! :')

For those of you who didn’t already know, this VN is based in the same setting as Nanairo Reincarnation and by the same company. Nanairo Reincarnation was my VN of the Year 2014, and it is a VN that has remained strong in memory ever since. This VN has a much stronger ‘horror’ influence than Nanairo, which tended to be more of a nakige for much of its length. The protagonist, Yashiro, is a young guy who was born particularly vulnerable to spiritual influences while not having the ability to see ghosts or spirits… meaning he is basically a walking target for stuff like that. At the beginning of the story, he finds out he is cursed by the ‘Ghost of the Old School Building’, one of the ‘seven mysteries’ of his school. This curse is fairly simple… it tries to get him to kill himself by jumping off the roof of the school building. A lot of the common parts of this VN focus around dealing with the mysteries and trying to discover a way to put the ghosts to rest, and in that sense it is almost identical to Nanairo… except that the protagonist, while central to the story, is essentially a ‘normal guy’ who got caught up in the mess involving ghosts and spirits. The protagonist from Nanairo makes several appearances in the VN, as do his ‘family’ members, and it is based about two years after the original story. There is definitely enough influence from the original that I have to recommend you play Nanairo first. This VN… tends toward an aura of sorrow, for much of its length. The moments of fear are there, but they tend to be less common than ones of sorrow/grief. There are a total of six heroines in the VN (five if you count Riri and Ruka as a single heroine), with three major arcs… The first arc is the Velvet Arc, which has the twin kami (Riri and Ruka) path splitting off midway. Riri and Ruka’s ending… leaves a really strong impression, to say the least. Technically, they are sub-heroines, but their ending is in no way neglected, either for detail or emotional value. If there is a significant difference from the main part of the arc (Velvet’s path), it is that it is somewhat shorter and less dramatic. Still, I cried for a half hour after it was over. Those who liked the red-head from Hikoukigumo no Mukougawa’s ending will like this one. Velvet’s ending… is closer to what I would call a ‘bittersweet romance’ path. Velvet has serious psychological problems, all wrapped up in her past (I won’t spoil it), and dealing with those issues is the main focus of her path. The second arc is the Older Women Arc, which contains Misato’s and Youko’s path. I’ll be straight… play Youko’s path first. If you play Misato’s path before Youko’s, it will destroy you utterly, whereas it is merely saddening when you play Youko’s first. Honestly, since I like that type of ending, I really did like how Youko’s path turned out, but it isn’t really a romance path (neither was Ruka’s and Riri’s). Misato and Youko’s paths branch off from one another dramatically very late on (from a story perspective), and Misato’s path follows a far less dramatic and painful road to the end, one that is closer to what romance fans would like. The third and last arc is the True Arc. This path contains Kana’s and the True ending. Kana’s path… is probably the most normal of all the paths, at least until the endgame. To be honest, Kana’s path is the reason why I won’t be calling this one a kamige, though it isn’t horrible. It is just… difficult to empathize with Kana (by the time I got to her path, I just considered her Idiot Friend #2, so I couldn’t see her as a romantic partner, even through the protagonist’s eyes). Nonetheless, as paths go in a general sense, it was still pretty high quality. However, where this arc shines is, of course, the True path. The True ending is… really heart-breaking. What you might or might not have figured out from the clues about the mysteries behind what is going on at the school are brought to light in full form, and the issues that were generally laid to rest outside of the protagonist’s control or in a way that didn’t reveal the whole mystery were brought to a head in the protagonist’s personal viewpoint. I cried for the True path. I seriously cried. If you don’t cry after you see what there is to see in this path, you probably should go to a psychologist. A few other comments before I go to my overall wrap-up. My favorite heroine in this VN was undeniably Velvet, both because of my tastes in heroines (you’ll know what I’m talking about when you know her secrets), and because I just really, really liked her ending. The protagonist’s degree of personal growth – and even his personality or outlook on life – will often be changed dramatically during the course of the paths, and this is one of the reasons I would love to give the kamige stamp to this one, despite the fact that it doesn’t quite reach Nanairo’s level. Overall, this is definitely one of those VNs I’ll still be recommending to people five years from now, along with Nanairo. It is a bit guro at times (at about the same level as Nanairo there), and the protagonist is a bit too typical of protagonists in the kind of situation he ends up in at times. However, as long as you can get past these issues (or actively enjoy them) this is a great VN to play. I will say that I really wished they would have done another adult protagonist, like Makoto from Nanairo. I don’t really see the need to go back to student protagonists, but I guess that is just an inevitability when companies are under the kind of pressure of tradition these are. I am seriously looking forward to more works from this company and this writer in the future, and this one is a solid (almost inevitable) VN of the Month candidate.

  5. Update: IT'S OUT! From the devs that brought us the best visual novel ever, HuniePop, comes a new spin-off game titled HunieCam Studio where, instead of dating a bunch of girls, you put them on the internet and make loads of money. We've been commenting on this new game over at the HuniePop discussion thread but I think it's time we make a proper discussion thread with the release date for the game approaching. Here's the final release trailer if you haven't seen it yet: The final retail price will be $6.99 Follow the devs on twitter for future updates As a massive fan of HuniePop, I'm still torn on whether or not this game is going to be great, but I'm definitely going to buy it on launch and see what it's all about. I'm mostly excited to be with best grill Audrey once again as well as meet all the new girls they've decided to add. My hopes for the game are certainly placed on the writing and whether or not they can bring back the fun vibe HuniePop had. The devs got a lot of flack for the massive change in art direction and game style in general, but I think their forte is in making fun games, so I'd rather wait and see what they come up with with this one. I also don't dislike the new artstyle and I think they polished it more than enough. Is anybody else excited for the game or is it just me?

  6. Oh? Let's talk Seinarukana then - is that why for years, Moogy and co. were going around saying 'the translation's been complete for ages, who know why the game hasn't been released or what they're doing'? It's only recently we found out they wanted a Steam release. Then there was that game which was stuck at 99% progress, it's "being inserted" for about a year. Was it Yumina? I can't remember. And who knows what's going on with half their Nitro+ stuff, like Sumaga. The delay for Root Double is less than a month, which is pretty small considering most delays in the game dev world, and miniscule compared with JAST. Communication could be better, but the wait is small enough that it should be bearable either way. If it gets pushed back to December, then again to next March then ...

    OTL (One Thousand Lies) review

So I know @Deep Blue made one of these a little while ago, but I really wanted to get one out myself as well. (I am also including pictures. You are too lazy man! ) Now that the game is released, I feel it really deserves some coverage! (Note that I read the beta version, and so some improvements will have been made to the final release. Also, I wrote this review in a littel bit of a subjective style, really because I want to get through my personal feelings that I experienced when I read the VN. It might make the review seem slightly biased, but I hope this doesn´t make the review seem less serious. I played the game with a completely objective state of mind, and this is just my honest opinion of the game. Anyways, on to the review:) One thousand lies is a 5-10 hour OELVN made by Keinart Lobre, (@Keinart.) The VN is about a group of friends goofing around as they get closer to graduating from high-school, though there is a lot more to the novel than what initially meets the eye. (Note, the novel has both a Spanish and English version. I read and proofread the English version.) In One Thousand Lies we meet Ciaràn Endyein, a slightly delinquent-like teenager who, along with his best friend Ausse Ealdwine, pull of silly yet harmless shenanigans that always end up getting them in trouble. The two are also accompanied by the pretty and intelligent Ziva Shani, who constantly try to psychoanalyze Endyein. At the beggining of the story, Endyein recieves a strange, mysterious email, telling him to go to a certain place without any more detailed instructions. The sender appears to have stolen a package Endyein was waiting for, so confused and angry, he decides to do what the email says. (With some persuasion from his friends.) This sends him down a fairly heavy psychological, yet heartwarming and slice of life-like journey. Story and writing The story in the game starts of really light and funny. It´s a slice of life story that has refreshing and entertaining humor; it doesn´t use overused clichès that you have seen 100 times before. As you get further into the story, you will start to notice that not everything is exactly how it seems. It´s hard to talk about this without spoiling the entire story, so we are going to keep it short. The story is well written, has pretty good pacing and does a good job of hiding the real kicker until the very end. The writing in the novel is, like I´ve already mentioned, really good. It is every editor´s dream, going through a novel that has essentially no mistakes, and that doesn´t repeat itself over and over, but instead offers new, refreshing words and phrases for each sentence. The language was almost a little bit too complex at times, as I felt it was unnecessary to use such big words for a normal, every-day setting. Still, the novel does use a lot of psychology terms and the likes, so it´s not like a complex language is a bad thing for it. There isn´t much else to say about the story, as the novel is quite short, and giving any more information could possibly spoil it. All in all, story and writing is very well done, and deserves a good 9/10 rating. Characters and art The characters in the novel are all diverse and interesting in their own way. You have Ausse, the slightly dumb but lovable rich kid who might or might not be the MC´s friend because of his financial situation. Ziva, the beautiful and determined female friend who constantly gets on the MC´s nerves when she tries to diagnose him with different psychological disorders. Claire, the cute and shy girl who only opens up when in the presence of Endyein. Luce, the playful and energic joker who always has a funny remark that will put the MC in his place. And finally Diniz The Sloth. (I think that title should be sufficent in describing him.) Each character has nice and well drawn sprites with several facial expressions that feels natural. The CG in the game is very pretty, though certain facial features gets a little less "natural" in the CGs compared to the character sprites, especially Luce´s. Regardless of this though, the CG is very nice and well made. The backgrounds are kind of like a painted sketch, which is a unique but interesting style that I personally found quite enjoyable. The only complaint I would have about the characters is that Diniz seems to have very little screen time compared to the others, and therefore he has little time to become a part of the main cast. Characters, 9/10, Art 7.5/10 Music and atmosphere The music in the novel is pretty good overall and seeing as the game is not voiced, this is a good thing. There are several comfortable soundtracks that helps bring out the emotion reflected in the scene, especially during the more enigmatic and mysterious situations the novel has to offer. The music did not take me by storm, but it still did its job very well in filling the "silence" when playing the unvoiced game. Not much more to say about it. Music gets a 6.5/10 score from me. The atmosphere in the game is quite hard to put into words. During the reading experience, it is obvious that there is something there that is more than just a few teenagers messing around. There is some kind of heavy undertone in the writing that clearly tries to tell you something more, but its written in such a way that what exactly that is, doesnt become apperant until the very end. I think that the way this was done is really quite impressive. Each character has a part to him or her that helps hint to this, and each scene does put out tiny clues, though in the end, figuring out what the cause of such an atmosphere is before the credits roll is not easy. This part of the game gets a clear 10/10 rating from me. It was quite the ride. Conclusion: In conclusion, OTL is an entertaining and innovative OELVN that doesnt try to do all those things we have already seen in Japanese VNs, but instead it uses original humor, exceptional writing and an interesting and thrilling psychological aspect to make the entire reading experience a blast. I had no idea what I was getting into when I started reading this, and simply voulenteered to proofread / test the game because of Deep Blue´s interest in it. Needless to say, I was not dissapointed. Final rating: 9/10. Here is a link to the thread for the game here on Fuwanovel:

  8. Hello everyone at Fuwanovel! Just sharing my current project since it might interest you guys and gals; an open-source C++ VN engine and a port of Snow Sakura to go with it! It's not going to be the world's best VN engine, but it's completely open-source so anyone can contribute/modify it as they see fit! The Snow Sakura port can be watched from the Github page: https://github.com/Slynchy/SnowSakuraCPP/ The engine itself can be watched from the Github page: https://github.com/Slynchy/March22/ And here's a video showing its basic VN capabilities, since a picture tells a thousand words! I'd also like to shoehorn in a thank you to Kelebek1 for helping decompile the Snow Sakura scripts into a more usable format, and frc_ for giving some tips to improve the code If you also have anything to contribute- be it feedback, criticism, code, etc.- then please use Github or post here I welcome it!

  9. For those not getting or reading the updates, the reason for the delay is quite readily apparent. You can put that "the translation has been done for months" gun down, now, because it's pretty clear from past updates that the work for Steam integration was the last thing they were working on, and it's probably what took more time than they projected, leading to the delay. Regista probably significantly underestimated the amount of time needed for the various aspects of their Steam integration dev and testing, since they haven't done it before - this is an extremely common occurrence in any flavor of software engineering. I do find it annoying that Sekai Project stated a March release and then didn't communicate a delay until the end of the month - maximum transparency in communication and somewhat-cushioned estimates are the best way to avoid getting into trouble with delays. Generally, people don't actually mind these kinds of small delays very much, as long as you give advance warning of the delay, can clearly explain why the project was delayed, and can give a confident projection for when it can be expected. I actually don't even mind the "lots of things happened" kind of explanation, since I can read between the lines of the other updates, but they should work on improving the other two aspects (because delays will continue to happen; that's just how software is). Also, from the sounds of the Kickstarter update email, Regista went kind of dark on them for the last few weeks, but I think that's an unfair dodge on their part - I still hold SP responsible for not communicating better. As the publisher, they're responsible for polling status from Regista, minding the release timeline, and keeping people updated, and I do think they dropped the ball. But that said, it's far from a big deal, and like others have pointed out, they're still doing a vastly better job than a particular competitor of theirs (though, honestly, JAST USA is more of a joke than a competitor, at this point).

But I know literally no one in Tallahassee to play tennis with. Just a side effect of being older and moving to a place you know nobody and are naturally introverted. Before I feel sad for you, I'll need you to confirm your age. If it's less than 35 I will post angrily about "Manning up" and "Stop whining and get your ass in the game" along with other similar phrase to both bolster your confidence and break your self-esteem. If it's over 35... I'll see about gifting you a copy of a Japanese porn game. If she's an adult she's not a loli - just a flat.

  16. While I don't buy into most of the core concepts that this article relies upon (and seems to assume are true without providing support), I can certainly relate to this feeling it describes as 'elevation'. Any anime with parents who trust or treat their children gently tends to make my heart metaphorically smile, be the reason Freudian or not. Sawako's parents in Kimi ni Todoke and Nagisa's parents in Clannad had that effect on me. A bit more than a year ago my sister had a child and had I not been inspired by characters like the ones I mentioned, I don't think I would've been able to build the resolve to be the uncle I want to be. Hopefully I can be an emotional support when things are dark and cheer on when everything is well.

  18. Why are you talking about JAST? If someone honestly expects them to release a game reasonably-timed they only have themselves to blame. In the same respect I don't know why people are mad about this. The fact that the month went on without them announcing a set release date should've been a pretty big indicator that it wouldn't release on time.

  19. Big difference is that JAST doesn't take people's money beforehand. If they used KS then I'd agree with you but they self fund their localizations.

  22. I actually have already played Canvas 2 and I kind of liked it but I didn't follow a guide so I got a bad ending; kinda spoiled it. Going to use a guide this time though While this is absolutely true, I am actually mainly making this project as a learning exercise in multi-platform deployment capabilities and engine development/organisation, as well as an experiment into finite state machine driven UI programming I just happen to also be a firm believer that everything should be open-source which is why I share my work on Github! With regards to benefits of this engine over others? Not many; one large component is keeping it lightweight in terms of file size (using WebP instead of uncompressed 32-bit BMP), code complexity (the main game loop is approximately 20 lines long; the rest is handled by the engine) and being easily modifiable. While that last point is not the case at the moment due to lack of code comments/documentation, I will be providing industry-standard Doxygen comments in the final version. I suppose another benefit to this engine is the small-to-non-existent gap between author and programmer; the scripting language is extremely lightweight and easy to pick up on

  25. @KeadRei I knew it wouldn't be long before Gurren Lagaan got mentioned! Kamina's bombast definitely qualifies for me as something quite inspiring. For me, it's a great example of the kind of leadership described by Iskandar in @babiker's signature: a person who displays behaviour in the extremes lends himself to be followed as a role-model, because he is a tangible standard people can strive for: a manifestation of what their dreams are in reality, an example of what they COULD be, if they committed themselves enough! Bonus Omake for Gurren Lagaan fans: Oh, make no mistake, she might not have understood it fully, but she definitely knew what she was talking about. The phenomenon of transference is accepted as a well-documented fact. Happiness is definitely contagious - but be warned that negative emotions are as well!

  30. In tanks and doujinshi the censorship is different, that's where you'll find all the black bars and white outs (in digital manga, mosaics are more common and are sometimes even applied over the already existing black bars) but magazines like Comic LO implement the type of censorship i'm talking about. As far as nukige goes, what I think works best is when the genitals are selected carefully and the mosaics are only applied to the necessary areas and don't overflow into the background, this way you can still make out the shape and it doesn't feel too intrusive. It also depends on the mosaic size, if they're too big it looks like shit regardless.

  31. From the manga I've read, a lot of it seems to be the infamous black line, or the 'region' is totally whited out. I doubt that the latter would work particularly well in the glorious technicolour of visual novels, so blacklining that shit would have been what I've have said. Yours is definitely a better idea though. As for dick drawing (something I'm so pleased I've been able to say on a forum ) and censorship... It's weird, but whenever I see an uncensored scene in a VN nowadays, it normally features me hiding behind a chair and throwing gifts of appeasement to the noonie goods is quite jarring, to be honest. It sounds daft, but for myself the censorship is an important part of the experience.

  33. That scene near the ending Just makes me all emotional. and to me it really emphasises on what a difference a good voice actor makes. Miyano Mamoru owns his role as Okabe in this VN. More VNs should learn from this and voice their protagonists. Yes I know that is not very likely to happen any time soon for a variety of reasons but I stick by it. It's okay. Little Busters! and Steins;Gate are at the top of my list too. Shh... Don't tell anyone.

  34. Most of the problems I pointed out in my review apply to the Dies Irae (and 90% other vns in the genre) everyone thinks they want so much too. I wonder if I accidentally downplayed the game, its actual fight scenes are very well done, among the best I saw in the medium (definitely better than what you had in Gahkthun), and its story is fun if not particularly groundbreaking. It might not be a masterpiece that will change your life, but it's an enjoyable game for what it is, and is definitely worth checking out given the limited options you have with translated VNs. My reviews might be a bit on a harsh side since I'm jaded from the hundreds of VNs I've read and they have to be pretty entertaining to receive 7/10 (4/5) or above from me.

  47. @harry_kinomotoA very interesting post :3 A couple of points, however: It doesn't. And if it did it would be so very, very wrong. Bishoujo games is described similar to that on Wiki, but that's a different class of games entirely. As an aside, while I'm talking about the wiki entry for VNs, wiki also comments on Japan differentiating between NVL (novel games) and ADV (adventure games) but this distinction not appearing in the West, and whether this is true in Japan I can't say but they failed to include the reason why. Traditionally adventure games have puzzles, a narrative, and exploration, most VNs in an ADV format don't fit this criteria and thus can't be described as adventure games over here. A bit off topic, sorry All stories are supposed to inspire feelings for their characters, after all at their heart stories are about people. If you don't inspire feelings for your characters in any medium, you're often regarded as having failed. I think VNs have advantages, and disadvantages in this regard, like most mediums do. It's almost as though you're implying something ... xD
