    The Last GM Standing!

Currently I'm winning by two, huh. I appreciate all your valiant efforts. Keep it rolling, we're sure to win! Since Nosebleed took pink already, our team color shall be red. May the blood you'll bravely shed in battle become the fire that will cleanse the halls of our Valhalla!

    The Last GM Standing!

Y'know guys, I might seem unmotivated by this but if you want to go into it declaiming Shakespeare verses I got nothing against it. It'll still be better than the lines from third rate fantasy novels of one of the opposite team #letthethrashtalkbegin By the way a random number generator careful reflection led me to designate Tiago as our general. Congratulations for your promotion.

  3. I share a lot of your gripes with the VN, and I'd recommend you to play Amanes route which has a rather long back story part called 'Angelic howl'. This story section about Yuuji's sister Kazuki and Amane is the by far best part of the VN. It's very serious, shocking and touching, and Kazuki is a fantastic character. The only other routes I played were Sachi's and Yuminko's. From those Yumiko's route was horrible and Sachi's was mostly boring and the ending was idiotic beyond believe. I didn't like Michiru and Machika enough to play their routes, but at least Makina's route is supposed to be almost as good as Angelic Howl because it was written by the same writer.

    Kanji Readings

Individual kanji study is generally a complete waste of time unless you're leaning towards production. What you should be doing is simply learning readings through vocabulary. Download Core 2k/6k/10k and do however many new cards a day you have the capacity for. At 40 new cards a day, you'll be done with 6k in 5 months or so, which is around 1700 kanji with multiple readings. Additionally, using the ITHVNR + Firefox and Rikaisama text-hooking method, you can import unknown kanji and vocab into Anki with a single key press. It's also a method which does not spoonfeed you with furigana, parsing and (optional) machine translations.

    Kanji Readings

If you're taking classes, then you should put the effort into it, it'll make your life easier later on. Even if you weren't, reading Japanese does require you to know, well, the readings. It's useful to know all the profound thoughts of the creature known as non voiced faceless VN protagonist. I think you should attempt to at least memorize the most commonly used readings if you want to get anything out of Japanese.

  10. Now, anyone who has seen pictures or videos from Hapymaher will have noticed the VN's resident loli, Maia. For various reasons, Maia is easily the character who leaves the strongest impression in the VN, hands-down. She is the center of the VN's obvious conflict, and she easily has the greatest variety of character poses and non-H CGs. If there is drama of some sort throughout the common route, Saki's route, Keiko's route, or Yayoi's route, she is somehow involved or the cause of it. In a game that is focused around dreams, she is the devil's whisper, always giving people that last push they need to cross a line or jump off a cliff. If Tohru, the protagonist, is the picture of the human capacity for self-control, she is apparently a representative of the part of the human psyche that denies that same control. However, that is only a small part of who she is. In fact, that surface appearance and her symbolic role are actually less important than what lies at the core... a person who's motivations are neither inscrutable or incomprehensible (though she lies like a rug when it suits her). In fact, she repeats her motivation verbally throughout the VN, mixed in with the lies and half-truths she tells habitually just to see the look on other people's faces. She hides nothing of her nature or personality, but she is quite capable of using that truth to deceive. In fact, in a regular chuunige, she really would be the ideal antagonist, as that combination of lies, half-truths, and truth that defines her makes for precisely the kind of antagonist chuunige-makers love. Heck, just listen to her theme song. That is precisely the kind of music they'd normally give to the last-boss type protagonist in another game... Nonetheless, at the core of her is a deep and abiding love and devotion that surpasses all barriers, allows her to bear anything... except that emotion itself. To be honest, she even makes the yandere-ish Saki (she really seems like it sometimes) seem mild in terms of her degree of emotion. That love contains everything that love should contain, including the fundamental duality of human nature... what we want for ourselves and what we want for others (I'm not saying anymore on this, as going any farther would be a real spoiler).

  11. Read the review here. I liked Kindred Spirits a lot. It's a pretty simple story but sometimes that's exactly what you need. I've seen barely any discussion on it here. Anyone play it yet? What did you think of it?

  12. Alas, the pressure of being the ace finally got to cowardly Camouflaged Sausage. Rooke tried to pick up the slack, but, well, we all saw how that ended... Me, when you had No Dice throw the first grenade: "Isn't your ship in the way?" Me, a few seconds later: "Yep." Me, a few minutes later: "Wait, did Tiago really just throw another grenade at his own ship?"

Wow, that was literally just as I was going to close the sign up period You barely made it. Anyways, yeah, so the sign up period is now over. We ended up with quite a lot of members. I will now start writing the first chapter, and I´ll release it sometime this week. (I´m thinking maybe friday?) Then from there on out I will release 1 chapter each week, until only one GM is standing. Best of luck to all the teams. (Let´s all pray we don´t die in the first chapter!!! )

  19. @littleshogun Soukoku no Arterial has a perfectly fine interface patch translating everything related to gameplay. I think it's machine assisted translated. There are some little errors I noticed which are probably the result of the translator not knowing some deeper concepts of Japanese grammar, but nothing gamebreaking. It's perfectly fine and considering that they translated hundreds of card, I think it's quite a feat. That's everything you need to play the game. The nekohen patchs should never be used. Heck, they use Google Translate instead of good MT. Shame on everyone who supports this shit.

  24. I think that doing an A-6 will be a mistake. We had a good run, had great laughs, maybe even shed a few tears, and stretching the series will not in favor for the Majikoi world. Maybe I'm wrong, but I'd rather see it end with a high, and Minatosoft moving to something else.

  27. I really haven't played that many VNs with gameplay, so I'm going to have to do this 1. Beat Blades Haruka 2. Beat Blades Haruka 3. Beat Blades Haruka Like I said, I haven't played that many games with gameplay, so it wasn't exactly a hard choice Some of the things I liked about the BBH gameplay was how it could be suprisingly difficult, especially vs bosses, and since you got a bad end if you lost against bosses, you actually had to put some thought into how you trained your heroine. The actual training was also pretty "fun", as it all involved H-scenes (Also, you can't not love a game that rewards you if you have a twisted mind, letting you sacrifice your own heroines to get raped by losing on purpose ... )

  28. Haven't played much gameplay VN's.But I'm playing Madou Koukaku now and this seems to be the best of the gameplay VN's that I've played so far for sure. I actually like the RTS style/town management/building over Kamidori's style. The Story seems to be better than most of the gameplay VN's too. I liked that theorycrafting bit with Garmus after the council. I also liked the exposition and insight on all the nations each turn. Orfan is definitely the best character for me so far (for various reasons) Also its good that he enemy nations react to how you move like when you invade deep into Yun-Gasol, Zafuha suddenly threaten to attack you. However I could fight on all fronts easily with like 40 commanders that I have XD. But well early expanding and ceasfiring when you have some terriotory to work with seemed to be the best tactic so far. It was pretty funny when I conquered the elves then found out that i shoudn't have done so because they actually join you though....speaking of which that are a lot of cases of that in this game. Gotta tread carefully since this is not rance^^

  30. Fixed that because it was starting to massively irritate me Other than that, I don't have much to say. I've only played part of Sengoku Rance, and I have Kamidori, Yumina and Aselia sitting on my HDD, gathering virtual dust until I can get to them. From what I played of it, Rance was pretty damn fun, but could have used a better explanation of how certain mechanics worked. I had to look them up online to even get how to play the game without losing relatively quickly, although that may be because I suck at strategy games hahaha

  31. 1- Virtue's Last Reward 2- 9 Hours, 9 Persons, 9 Doors These two are just god tier VNs, not much for their puzzles 3- Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair Class Trials are the my favorite gameplay sequence. Mmmmm. Runner-ups are Danganronpa 1 and YU-NO.

  32. I've been playing Trails in the Sky SC a lot during the past week. Currently on Chapter 4, making sure to do all the side quests as well. I'm finding some of the optional side bosses to be quite challenging in comparison to the first game. This series still has the best translation and dialogue of any jrpg game series I've ever played.

  33. By the way, to OP first I need to nitpicking. The title should be visual, not visaul lol. To be honest, I didn't know much gameplay vn (If you talk about untranslated one. Otherwise, I think I knew all translated gameplay VN), but I'll try to give my best impression about gameplay vn. Since you limiting it to 3, so I think I'll just give 3 gameplay vn that catch my attention recently, although my explanation might expanded though. 1. Soukoku no Arterial - I knew it was machine translated if you using Nekohen patch, I'd already state several time about this game in some of my post (My first post here was give tips to this game too by the way) and I think I'll try to explain it. So the gameplay was you using the card to fighting your opponent, or in Yu-Gi-Oh term duel. While you fighting using card, actually you fighting like a normal people would. So for easier term this is actually SRPG, only using card for the battle. Although it's only for describe the battle, the rule was quite complex actually, but still more simple than Yu-Gi-Oh. As for SRPG element you could craft item like in Kamidori, copying the monster card, interact with girl in order to get their more powerful card (Just thinking Persona 3 or 4), and battling in the arena. I think I must stop it here, otherwise I might end up explaining my trick to beat Soukoku lol. Oh Nekohen also provided MT patch for Madou Koukaku and Himegari too if some of you here didn't care about using MT. 2. Eiyuu Senki - Actually the story was quite weak until you conquered EU, but the story goes like our MC was trapped in the world where all historical figure were all woman. The gameplay was more like Kichikuou Rance than Sengoku Rance actually. The MC was more like Domino from Romanesque iirc (Or maybe just generic nice guy, and Romanesque comparison because it's from same company). The battle system were interesting with brave and hate system. Brave was something like shared mana that gained either by us hitting normally to enemy or enemy hitting attribute bonus (Weakness) to us, while hate was hidden stat that determined enemy targeting pattern. Oh, in here you could also do some quest to gain affection from the girls and help the girls to get the skill that will help them in the battle. As of now, this game actually officially localized for PS3, but some nice man at Russian forum rutracker making the patch that add PS3 translation to PC version, with unnecessary addition (imo) that allow us to get the character from PS3 version and restore H-Scene (I think the art of new characters was unfit in original Eiyuu Senki (I knew they use Kojirou for GOLD) and restored H-Scenes were not translated anyway (Beside, I think PS3 replacement H-Scenes was enough imo and quite nice actually)). But to some people who want H-Scenes, that's nice addition I think. Anyway, I'd played it and it managed to translated everything in PC Version except H-Scenes, which once again not much important compared to H-Scenes in said Konosora imo. 3. Sengoku Rance - My first gameplay VN too and quite good one. It's quite hard if you didn't know what to do, but once you could understand mechanic in this game, it's actually very easy. Although I saw that many newbie made major mistake in regard of attacking Iga though, since it was weak country and that made the new player think Sengoku Rance was unwinnable game. I was actually stuck at play this game until I'd found this LP and following his way to beat Sengoku Rance with minor modification. After that, I'd dared to said the hardest enemy to me would be Tokugawa (Even without 5 of his raccoon bodyguard (And to accomplished that need some high luck), Ieyasu still tough and hit very hard) and Miko Institute (Damn you Souma Hayate and Himiko, Also, you couldn't use usual nuke from Natori before conquered Miko) instead of Demon Army. Oh, speaking about route, the best route would be True Route (Interestingly also default route), then tied between Yamamoto and Kenshin Route, and finally Ran Route is the worst route imo, although if some of you like Ran Route, that's okay too. That's all for now. Actually there's still more, but I think those 3 should be enough to presented.

  34. The Ikusa Megami series (Ikusa Megami Zero): A true fantasy epic in a highly developed setting that tells a captivating tale of human drama, with the sophistication and shock factor of a God-tier eroge. Oh, and it has gameplay too. Aselia the Eternal: Same praises as the Ikusa Megami series, just dialed down a bit. The battle system is pretty unique, but wasn't polished to a shine until Seinarukana. Sengoku Rance: Probably the best gameplay I've seen in an eroge next to Kamidori Alchemy Meister. One of the few comedy eroge I could actually enjoy, as the comic dialogue manages to not repeat the same gags over and over. 100% better not machine-translated.

  36. I've only played Soul Blazer, which is indeed pretty amazing, and part of Illusion of Gaia, which was fascinating but not what I was looking for at the time. I haven't done much nostalgia gaming in a while because I have too much non-nostalgia gaming to do, but there is some constant nagging feeling that I'm missing part of my life as a result. I recently happened across Screw Attack live streaming EarthBound, which was quite a trip down memory lane. And I do mean a trip - I watched them first go through Moonside, and then the monkey cave where you have to trade presents to all the monkeys. What a beautifully bizarre game.

    Kanji Readings

I agree. Although I don't know the circumstances of your class, I would suggest sticking to whatever structure they use. In any case, if you want to get ahead, I would recommend something immersive like reading a visual novel with a text hooker or whatever, because raw memorization that isn't applied (as it would be in a class) will probably go forgotten unless you dedicate a wasteful amount of effort.

    Kanji Readings

It depends on which aspects of Japanese you want to learn. If your intention is only to be able to read, not listen, then the readings of kanji may not be strictly necessary. However, there are some complications, of course. Some kanji sometimes are written in hiragana under various conditions (or even in katakana, for the sake of emphasis and such), so you might be losing out on some vocabulary that you wouldn't be able to interpret immediately without the use of an electronic dictionary―and that brings up the matter of whether your pursuits involve the continued use of an electronic dictionary, etc. Not to mention that there are generally two readings for kanji, the onyomi and kunyomi, and whether you choose to actively learn one or the other or both also depends on your circumstances. In short: Not enough info. If you want to learn Japanese in all of its forms, as though you were in a classroom, then the answer is yes, but if your intentions are more specific, then the answer is maybe.

  40. Naitou Tohru is the protagonist of Hapymaher and the character whose viewpoint you share for about 85% of the VN. He is a character whose personality and situation are defined by a sense of loss and guilt so painful, it has literally driven him to the brink of insanity. Oddly enough, the thing I find most admirable about him is the fact that is self-aware enough to actually rely on someone (most of the time) when he is at his limits and outside his specialty (which is altering/controlling his own dreams). A few words about his situation without giving away anything that would ruin the story. If you know the concept of a 'lucid dream', you also know that it is a dream where you are aware you are dreaming (this often leads to you remembering more of it). In Tohru's case, he sees nothing but lucid dreams... which means that the barriers between reality and dreams in his consciousness are extremely blurry and he is incapable of 'resting' psychologically when he sleeps. He rarely, if ever receives what we would call 'restful sleep' without the aid of drugs that send him into utter insensibility, and in his dreams, he is capable of doing practically whatever he wants, in many cases. Tohru's character can sometimes be seen as a symbol of self-control - as I said in my post on Maia - because he really does have a ridiculous level of self-control for someone still in his teens. He is not really that dense, though he often pretends to be out of self-defense. However, he has a lot of psychological hangups even in real life that have reinforced his somewhat blurry view of reality... ones he actually needs to maintain his mental and emotional balance, even if he realizes they are ridiculous. Tohru's clear-eyed view of dreams can be seen as a contrast to his somewhat blurry view of reality, as he is almost always the first to realize when he and the other characters are dreaming and when they aren't... and what the nature of the dream is. To him, nightmares are everyday stuff, and he is so inured to the pain that accompanies them by experience that it would be tempting to see him as nerve-dead from the outside. He does have his weaknesses, even in dreams, though... and their names are Saki and Maia. He is heavily dependent on Saki (self-evident within seconds of encountering her) and... holds other emotions towards Maia. So what can I say? In another VN, I might seriously dislike him, because he is too aware of those around him to be your standard harem protagonist, but he does have some seriously admirable elements... such as a sense of compassion and good Samaritan-ism (limited to women most of the time) or his willingness to endure pain for the sake of others. However, he is also more than a little clumsy when it comes to handling those close to him and he frequently makes a wild boar look mild and easily moved.
