  2. Beat Blades Haruka review, By Dergonu, Fuwanovel Beat Blades Haruka is a gameplay oriented nukige released by Alice Soft, which was recently translated and licensed by Mangagamer. The game offers 150 H-scenes, ranging from normal vanilla scenes to darker things like rape and beastiality. The game's appeal is clearly rooted in it's H-content, but does that mean that's everything the game has to offer? In Beat Blades Haruka you play as Ikusabe Takamaru, a boy who desperately wants a girlfriend. His friend, Narika, keeps getting in the way of his possible romances, something that irritates him quite a bit. But soon, his fairly normal life of being rejected by women and half-assing himself through school quickly comes to a halt when the beautiful ninja Haruka, who has traveled to our time from the past, suddenly appears in Takamaru's life. Chasing the evil Noroi who has lept through time with his follwers in order to turn the world into chaos, Haruka and her fellow Cresent moon members turn to Takamaru for help. It turns out, Takamaru is a descendant of the Dragonian, meaning he has the power to transfer strength to the blades of the crescent moon. (The blades being female ninjas.) This power, SP, is transfered from the Dragonian to the blades by ... Having sex. Takamaru's mission is to use the blades at his disposal to fight the four Tetra Sealers, Noroi's most powerful subordinates, take down the towers which connect to Noroi's realm, and to stop him once and for all. During the game, the player gets a whole lot of choices that will allow them to take full control of their destiny. Will you be the good guy, fighting to stop Noroi? Or will you give in to your dark desires, using the blades as tools for your own pleasure and gain? Offering a large variety of different endings, Beat Blades Haruka is a very unique gameplay nukige that allows its player to choose a lot more than just a singular ending, but they have the ability to impact the very way the entire game is played. The gameplay: During the story, a big part of your time will be spent preparing your heroines for battle. During the gameplay parts of the VN, you will be matched up against an enemy. You can spend SP, (sex power), that you accumulate through dragon syngery, (sex), to unleash powerful attacks against your opponent, and you train your heroines stats through either dragon synergy, training, castle raids or defeating enemies. The lower your stats are compared to your opponent, the harder it is to win. The stats highlited in blue, like the defense in this picture, means the stat is underleveled compared to your opponent, and the chances of winning are smaller. By losing a fight against a male Kainin, one of Noroi's lieutenants, the heroine will be raped and an option to skip the following rape H-scene will appear. (Unless you disable that feature in the option menu.) The gameplay is entertaining, though it is a little difficult at first. Getting used to what all the different stats does is a little bit hard and overwhelming, and the stats are also a little poorly balanced. For instance, by stacking a large amount of reflex, you will be able to sweep through the game, as your character will essentially never miss, and she will also dodge a lot of the opponent's attacks. But if it's the other way around, and your reflex stat is low but your other stats are high, you still wont do much damage, as most of your attacks will be dodged. Basically, there is too much focus on reflex, something that makes combat a little bit imbalanced at certain points in the game. Your opponents gets really strong in the late game, meaning their reflex stats are high, and so if you didn't train your heroine correctly, a bad end is waiting for you. (If you are defeated by a sealer, you get a bad end and a game over.) Still, these flaws aside, the gameplay is enjoyable. It's fun training up your heroine, either choosing to clear out the streets to protect the people like the good guy, or simply being an asshole and having your heroine raped over and over. (This increases her stats a great deal, however it gives you + brutality, and if the heroine is raped too much, it can lead to a brutal bad ending.) The variety offered to you makes playing the game a second, third or fourth time fun. The phase system, Libido and your dice While we are still on the gameplay part of the VN, there is a few things to note. The game itself is split into four parts, 3 phases and then actual story. The 3 phases are morning, afternoon and night phase. Between these phases the game's story progresses, and you see normal VN style dialogue as well as choices that you can use to impact the story, as well as your heroine's stats. During the morning and afternoon phase, you either train up your heroine by having sex, raise your libido or rest, in order to get more dice recovered. The night phase is spent actually fighting your opponents, and going on castle raids. (What exactly are these dice and how do they work?) The dice system in Beat Blades Haruka is what let's you make your "moves" in the phases. You get X amount of dice each day, based of your dice recovery. You can have a maximum of 8 dice at a time. The dice can be a number between 1 and 6, and the dice itself is used to "pay for" actions. As an example, if you want to sleep with haruka to increase some of her stats and her SP, you have to "pay" some dice. The lower levels of dragon synergy are cheaper, but give less stats, the higher levels are more expensive but give you more stats. The system is very forgiving. If you roll a 7 on something that needs 8 to complete, 7 will be subtracted from the action, so that in the next phase, it will only cost 1 dice. The dice itself is based off RNG, though do note that it is essentially impossible to soft reset for. Still, with the way the system is made, soft reseting for dice is not even needed, so there is nothing to worry about there. If you do it right, completing the game in the 99 days given to you is a walk in the park. Lastly, libido is a strange stat. It is what makes your dice recovery higher. Every 10 points of libido, your dice recovery goes up by 1. What does this mean? It means that after the night phase, you will get back X dice. So if you have a dice recovery of 5, the next day following a night phase, you are given 5 dice. Raising your libido is simple, and is done by either having sex with a female Kainin, choosing an option at a choice screen with (libido) next to it, or just clicking "raise libido". The game's value beyond H-content? We have already talked about the gameplay side of the game. It's entertaining, though very repetative and it's also focused strongly around H-scenes. (In order to prepare your heroine for a battle you have to have sex, and if you lose a battle, you get into a rape scene. H is a big part of this nukige, obviously.) But what about the story itself? Music, art, characters and such. What is the value of the game outside just the H-scenes? The character designs and art in the game is overall very nice. A lot of work seems to have been put into each character's design, though the personalities of the the main characters are fairly bland and simple. Most work seems to have been put into the kainins and tetra sealers. They are all very badass, pretty, hot, what have you. Each one of them has many small details that stand out, and are just overall very well made. The main characters are by no means poorly designed, but in comparison they do fall a little short. The art itself is very nice, with animated cut-scenes, well drawn backgrounds and detailed character sprites. The music in the VN is pretty good, offering a variety of tracks for different situations that fits well with the atmosphere of the scene. The story itself is what it is. The game does take itself seriously; it's not like it just jokes around and put all focus on H. The story is decent. There is moments where it will take you by suprise, certain moments that are more emotional than others, though the actual story is fairly short. The main focus of the dialogue aspects of the game lies in the different scenes you can get with the heroines and side characters by making choices. If you focus on one girl a lot, increasing her love hearts in the game, you will go on dates with her and get close with her. If you are an asshole and just have your blades raped and defeated, you will get unique scenes that deal with this. The actual main story that remains the same through all playthroughs is therefore minimal, as the game wants to keep the focus on your choices as the player. This is both a flaw and a strength in the VN. It's a flaw because it means that ultimately, the story itself is slightly underwhelming and short, but it's also a strength because it does mean the player feel like he or she is more in control of the outcome. All in all Beat Blades Haruka is a solid VN, offering unique and entertaining gameplay, a big variety of choices that lets the player impact the game's ending, though it does lack some impact in its delivery of the story. + Entertaining gameplay + Good art, music and character designs + A huge variety of choices that let's the player choose how the game is played - Slightly underwhelming main story - The main characters are a little bland and some more time should have been put into them - The stat system is a little imbalanced

  8. Hello guys! This is my first post in this forum (loving it btw ). Im pretty new to the VN world, I got immediately hooked by this genre of games and I would like to support them by starting a fan translation project of a VN that I've had an eye on for a long time since I started reading them. The only concerns I have regarding this are the following: 1- Could someone like me, who doesn't know a bit of japanese (I can understand spoken jap a little bit but can't read at all) start a Fan translation project? That being said I am looking for a way of extracting the scripts for the game to be able to translate it (game has 6 years already) and I could fill the position of what is called Hacker and Editor. 2- Is there some kind of website/post/thread that talks about how to manage a fan translation team or how to start a Fan translation project for newbies like me ? I'm talking about how to set up an organized team to work swiftly in the best way possible and how to make the post thread of my project as clear and informative as possible so everyone knows how everything would be managed and the general info as well as attracting people to recruit (I do think there are a lot of people interested in entering a project but I don't know where or how should I post threads about recruiting people for one). I hope that everything is clear, I'm pretty nervous because this is my first post . I would love to hear your thoughts, since I'm lost and would like some advice.

  9. I'm trying to set the hooks for various flagship VNs with existing English translations in as few words as possible. I'm not looking for a summary, nor even themes. Rather, I'm looking for the hook: whatever sells the VN as appealing; the word or words you would always utter when explaining what a VN is about. The briefer you can say it, the better. The acceptable maximum is six words. Here's a few examples of my own (maybe more will come tomorrow; this isn't actually that easy, in general): Comyu: absurdism and giant robots Little Busters: friendship Clannad: family The rules are simple: the VN whose hook is described should be good (otherwise, why bother?) the hook must be at most six words So write one and post it. Six words is a hard limit, because constraints encourage greater creativity. I'm mostly interested in VNs with an English translation, but if you've got something to share, go for it.

  10. Now, those who remember my rave from last year will probably sigh in exasperation (or boredom) that I'm posting on Minori again. I mentioned before that I dislike most of Minori's games on a personal level, even while acknowledging the high-level art and sound in them... My reasons were varied but all of them were pretty amorphous, probably because I was so blinded by that intense, instinctive dislike that I never really sat down and meditated on just what was driving me crazy. I mean, Minori's VNs are visually exceptional, with generally high-level (if similar-looking) heroines and backgrounds, and in terms of sound, they use some of the best VA's in the business, to generally excellent results. Their characters are generally round, feeling like people, and the writing quality is above average. So what is there not to like? I seriously asked myself this question when I realized I was dragging the extra luggage of the two games I just went through and was trying to shrug them off. As I began the VN and reached the early turning point (most Minori games have a major turning point in the common route that causes the conflicts/issues later on, though there are exceptions) it came to me exactly what was driving me crazy. It was the protagonist. Does that sound crazy? Most Minori protagonists, for better or worse, are your average adolescent... perhaps with some strange ability, perhaps with psychological scars, but they are ultimately 'normal' adolescents with all that accompanies that (Eden* being an obvious exception). To my horrified fascination, I realized that it was the very fact that Minori actually goes through the trouble to round out their adolescent protagonists that is driving me up the wall in each of their games. Now, for those of you who are old enough to be able to look back on adolescence with relief... perhaps you will recognize the sheer number of facepalm (or head-desk) moments you run into when dealing with an adolescent protagonist who acts exactly like an inexperienced adolescent would in the situations involved in most of Minori's games. Generally speaking, if you can think of a common mistake someone would make in a given situation at that age, a Minori protagonist will make it, usually to disastrous - or at least painful - results. For better or worse, Minori's protagonists aren't really ciphers... and normally that would have been a reason for joy for me. Unfortunately, they happen to be round characters in a way that makes it unbelievably painful to be imagining myself in their positions (and not in a pleasant utsuge fashion). Of course, they also tend to grow a lot during the story, but the impression of the first part of a Minori game usually makes me want to slam my head into a wall... As such, can I really be blamed for having trouble fully appreciating the game as a whole? Probably, if you ask the right people. *smiles wryly* Anyway, hopefully I'll be able to get past this issue, now that I'm aware of its root... but I am glad that, at the very least, I've managed to figure out precisely what was driving me insane, rather than just having a knee-jerk reaction to Minori's games.

  11. Hello, I'm new to this forum so if this isn't the right place to post this let me know. So I'm working on a visual novel story: Set in modern England, Cain Blanchard is a smart-aleck 15 year old who, after enrolling in a school specializing in the arts of sorcery, finds himself caught in a game triggered every 500 years by the birth of the phoenix. Ignis Avis Venatio is a fight to the death competition between students and their familiars. The winner of the game obtains the phoenix’s powers. On top of choosing who to date and who to kill, Cain must make the crucial decision of whether the phoenix’s power will be used in benevolence or for destruction. characters: For anyone interested in this project you can check out our development progress here: http://project-iav.tumblr.com/ It's also in the middle of being funded: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/743136579/visual-novel-ignis-avis-venatio/description , so if you have the time we'd greatly appreciate it. I'd love to hear what anyone thinks of the project so far. Thank you!

    The Central Pokemon Topic

So for anyone interested in some wildly useless speculation on where the next game will take place I've tried to put the evidence together for the Hawaii theory (which has the best bet at the moment for being right). The evidence for Hawaii as the location the next game will be based off of seems to be stacking up. In the few images released thanks to the video we see that the license plate for one of the cars might have a rainbow...which is exactly what one finds on the license plates of Hawaii, the buildings look very similar in architecture to real Hawaiian buildings, the sun and moon could also be representative of Hawaiian mythology with Hina the moon goddess and Maui the sun god representing the upcoming legendary pokemon especially if we take the fact that all previous games have had a basis on one mythology/religion or another. It would not be a huge stretch. Other evidence for Hawaii comes from the rough drawn sketch of what seems to be either a red crested cardinal or a woodpecker (the first of which can be found on the islands of Hawaii) The vehicles shown in the preview as well as the format of the pokemon centers (both the hut like buildings and the fact they seemed to have mobile pokemon centers) definitely look similar to what you might find in Hawaii. Hawaii has yellow fire trucks, the lack of back or a roof to the vehicles could be because of the heat, etc... I'm quite curious if prices for everything will be more expensive and whether or not we might see some tourists from other parts of the pokemon world throughout the game as call outs to previous franchises. It would be pretty damn cool to see some characters from previous games pop up while on vacation (nice call out to the 20th anniversary to see some familiar faces). In Pokemon XY (or OR/AS) we also had someone give a souvenir from a far off location and this souvenir looked very much like a tiki. If that were not enough evidence we also have the fact that there is one final pokemon not actually available in the national dex called Volcanion. This pokemon is about to get a movie and while the Azoth kingdom apparently is in Kalos we've yet to be able to get it legitimately in a game which makes me think that it will probably be available in the next game and have a connection to that region. Usually the pokemon films have been known to preview the next generation of pokemon in the film before the next game's release and so I think the region of Hawaii with all its volcanoes is probably a perfect place to finally find this one. If we take the upcoming film as a sneak peak at the overall theme in the next game then we can probably expect man (technology) vs. nature to be a part of the story. With the name for the games being Moon and Sun it is not unreasonable to assume that the enemy team name this time around will be something around the lines of Team Eclipse (lunar vs solar) or Team Halo/Rainbow (in reference to the rings around the sun that look like a halo or rainbow). Of course the enemy and overall themes could be completely different from that of the films. Lot of speculation on my part but I'm essentially convinced that the next game will take part at least partially on a polynesian island of some sort and there is a ton they could do with it to make it interesting.

  16. There is not. Kazuki does have screen time and H-scenes in the later games, but she does not have a route per-say. In fact, in Meiykuu and Rakuen, there is no route system in the main story.

  23. The answer more or less is no. If you don't actually have any real programming/game hacking skills or translation skills, then starting a project isn't going to get you anywhere. There aren't any truly successful projects run by people who don't have any real skills of their own. Because what are you really offering that people can't do on their own? If it's a common engine, anyone can get script extraction tools.

  25. Interesting topic, although I don't know if I could make it correctly though. But, let me try a few, although it may be come as overgeneralize though, and I'll also give my short comment about VN if there was a need in bracket. Beat Blade Haruka - Sex with your ninja (Although I'd interested because magical girl resemblance though, especially with transforming Haruka) Yurirei - Yuri Cupid (It's one of the title chapter in game too) Muv-Luv Alternative - Attack on BETA (Since it's said that MLA was the inspiration for Attack on Titan manga, might use BETA as replacement for titan. It might still wrong though) Koichoco - School politic (Mainly in regard of election) Steins Gate - Time travel Kira Kira - Travelling All-Girl Rock Band (Although one of them was trap aka our MC though, and the music sound like J-Pop from some reviewer) Soukoku no Arterial - Yu-Gi-Oh and Survival (Had card battle obviously (Better than Princess Waltz, go get Soukoku even if the narration patch right now was machine translated one), and the plot was trapped in another world) Eiyuu Senki - Historical harem (You're in the world with all of major historical character were girl, and you the only man. Your goal was to conquer the world and got the girl. Go figure) Never7 - The Moege of Infinity (It's first infinity series, and before the genre shift most scene would be not out of place in any recent moege (I think)) Ever17 - Escape from Underwater Park (Quite obvious, and the most famous of Infinity series) I think I could describe all of those above. Feel free to correct me if those description were wrong though.

  26. Hello guys! We are going to be finishing up our game map in a couple of days but would like to hear some commentary on where it currently stands. A little background. The Rift is a dimentional tear in which the interior is its own ecosystem. Its roughly 5 miles wide and has wildly different environments. Currently there are no landmarks but as you progress through the game, you will unlock locations. It is also in 4k so zooming in does not pixelate which will be a major factor when it comes to location art.

  30. I have an idea for a VN (totally new idea that poped into my head last night). If anyone here is interested in helping me I would be happy. The story is about a samurai named Raion, who is a member of the Ishin Shishi, and he fights in the war for Kyoto and equality. He is a ruthless killer and has a very cold attitude. Then a priestess named Hikaru comes into his life and turns it upside down. More details for those who want to join me. You can contact me via e-mail or my MAL account. Also is there a site like this one for manga?

  34. At least the first half was pretty great, on the same level as the beginning of the first season IMO. It has Sinon as a quite interesting new heroine and it also builds up a good bit of tension (it stayed pretty close to the LN). But beware of traps... The second half has partly the problems of the first season's second half, though you might actually like it quite a lot, seeing how much you like Asuna, because she plays the main role in the last animated arc.

  35. Reading Tae Kim multiple times is probably useful since that way you can cement all the nuances well. It's likely someone will miss a detail on their first reading. I'd say go through the whole thing twice, then go onto a VN. After that read it once a week or so along with the VN until you get a bit more in there if you're serious about getting this down.
    1 point
  36. Tae Kim is the basic thing I use, along with text hooking. http://www.guidetojapanese.org/learn/ In order to get stuff like context and how pieces fit together you need a general grasp of stuff like grammar for it to make sense. So read through as much of Tae Kim as you can. After going through it a few times, try picking up an untranslated VN and going through the hooking process. There's full guides on here somewhere, but basically it grabs the text from the game and puts it through a dictionary translator of sorts to help you figure out the meaning. From there you'll be able to start recognizing some along the way while you read. I've been focusing on my writing so I haven't been able to do full-on for this, but once you manage to figure out basic grammar it should be easier to figure out meanings through context. Once you start getting some experience it can be easier to jump into more kanji-specific or concentrated methods. Using the language in and of itself is the most efficient method alongside memorization rather than memorization exclusively.

  37. For the most part, it isn't really hard at all, since there aren't a lot of technical terms, but they use some manners of written expression that aren't common in most VNs, so at times the difficulty will spike sharply for people not accustomed to reading Japanese literature.

  39. Pretty much. First half of season 1 of SAO is one of my favorites, for pretty much exactly the reasons you listed: Asuna, great episodic characters, a feeling of real progression (especially romantically), and a feeling that everything matters. That said, if you can bring yourself to do it, seriously, stop watching after the Aincrad arc ends. I'm sure you'll never thank me for it, but on the other hand if you do keep watching, I can pretty much guarantee that one day you'll come back and say you should have listened to me. It basically ruins everything that was great about SAO previously... but it's insidious, so you might not notice at first.
