Regarding this VN: If you're going to sell a VN in the west and want to be taken seriously, then make sure it's properly westernized, and while you're at that make sure you have at least a highschool diploma and that you passed English class so it doesn't look like the VN was written by a 10 year old. Those are not the same (more like - those are almost opposite actually). What you are saying is generally true - there's nothing wrong with being a fan of a culture from another country and trying to copy/adapt it etc.. But, this is NOT related with weeaboos in any way. They are more like dumb fanboys/fangirls who don't really know anything about Japanese pop-culture, but try to pose as super-otakus. It's the term for annoying retards, nothing more. I think it's safe to assume most of us only do that on anime/VN-related websites, conventions and such appropriate places. It isn't related specifically with anime (military otakus are a common type for example). On the West, it is sometimes used as a synonym of a "Japanese culture fan" without any negative connotations. That's quite individual and may vary between communities. @Vemocleus Nowadays, I pretty much automatically ignore everything that looks like a modern, high-budget Hollywood Crap, without even reading a synopsis. Are all those movies worthless? Probably not, and there might be some hidden gems made by people who actually care. But, I have better things to do than trying to dig them up from a pile of thrash. And I have seen a fair share of actually good movies. Now, imagine a person who have only read 2-3 crappy OELVNs (and maybe played some bad hentai flash games for good measure). Why the Hell would he/she keep trying, when apparently everything VN~ish is a horribly written garbage? A first timer is likely to enjoy something like Katawa Shoujo. But this? You don't need to read 50 top-tier VNs to realize it's horrible. It will do nothing but discourage any serious readers from digging deeper into the medium (where a lot of titles are ergoe to boot, and ero + good story is still a bit of an alien concept on the West). The bad thing is that it might attract some horny, illiterate teenagers. And, unfortunately, they are a huge market. So, crappy pseudo-erotic VNs could become quite profitable - little effort, easy cash. I wouldn't really say they are targeted at the wrong group from the marketing point of view (just like MangaGamer's cheap, awful nukiges). The sad truth is that a huge crowd of people actually likes garbage. That's why Hollywood Crap & co. is actually profitable. If this becomes a trend among OELVN's (and they are heading there really fast...), it will seal their fate for good. Why create something aimed at serious readers (which requires effort), when you can earn much more (with much less effort) by aiming it at an entirely different, larger audience?

To be honest with you, I don't want VNs to be popular in the West. I like to be unique and know of something amazing that few know about. Besides, western governments would probably censor everything to the core. I'm happy with the way things are right now.

Sure. But Japan already has an established market for VNs. Also, story- and ero-oriented titles aren't really targeted at completely different audiences - they only serve a different purpose, their markets are quite similar (at least, the difference isn't as big as in the OELVNs' case). If you want to sell your VN on the West, you have pretty much two choices: - Aiming at the existing niche market, that is biased against OELVNs already and won't buy random crap. You'd have to write something actually decent, that would rival at least mediocre Japanese titles. High risk, a lot of effort, small reward. - Aiming at a different market, that has no idea about VNs, and apparently will be happy with just T&A. You can write anything, no matter how bad it is, then you add boobs and put it on Steam. Low risk, not much effort (you only need decent artist), potentially much higher reward. The difference between those two options is absolutely overwhelming. It's not that hard to imagine a flood of cheap T&A moneygrabs. They apparently sell after all, so why not make more? That doesn't mean there won't be any decent OELVNs anymore. But, they have to make their way through a sea of garbage even now. If you add more thrash, those rare decent titles will completely drown. Japanese VNs are good as they are, but OELVNs that try to imitate Japnese style and setting, almost always fail miserably. KS isn't exactly an exception here (to me, inconsistent pseudo-Japanese setting was among it's bigger flaws actually). Also, only newbies liked it. More experienced readers generally place it only among slightly above-average Japanese doujins at best. If Western VNs' writers were sticking to the settings they are more familiar with, I think the amount of epic failures would have dropped a little.

Before visual novels, I was less socially involved on the net. The few friends and scattered communities I was part of were sliding away for the most part; I wasn't all that sad about this, but it wasn't great either. I spent my days playing DotA and browsing small-time forums or reading info-binge sites like tvtropes and wikipedia. I used to devour books when I was younger, but that had slowed down. Basically, I was diverting myself from reality with games. Now, read on because this aspect did not improve I saw Katawa Shoujo mentioned on various sites (among others I think RPS had an article on it?). It was free, so why not? Seemed interesting. Read, and experienced them feels. From tvtropes I had seen CLANNAD being mentioned quite a lot, so I got that as my second vn (I think...). F/SN followed, etc. Somewhere along this process I found vndb and used its lovely sort by rating feature to plan out what to read. I don't know what took me to fuwa; might have been someone dissing it on vndb for all I know. Fuwanovel was interesting. I was already interested in pirate issues and concepts like the sharing economy, abolishing copyright et cetera, so I pretty much agreed with Aaeru's position (market realities make me slightly more pragmatic now; the market situation we've got makes certain compromises sensible for the goal of making VNs more popular in the west.) Quite early on Fuwa, so discussion threads were more interesting to me (and I hadn't debated every topic at hand already.) Started off with no introduction, just posted. Eventually I joined Steve's ts3, back when he was still spamming delicious loli pics. I held off from the IRC for some time, because I wasn't sure if it was any good... but eventually I joined and it turned out to be significantly more active than the ts3 (if less focused.) A core group of people on IRC got pretty active at this time, with me and then-Nakanishi Kaguya (thus Nakuya) being the most active and/or spammy. There was fun, there was drama (the silliest of which being the AMApocalypse - did you just cringe? ), and it was certainly pretty lively all in all. Eventually I got a twitter account, since some people weren't on the IRC much and spent their time there instead. As drama and time took its toll on IRC activity, I became more active there instead. Throughout, I was obsessively refreshing the fuwaboards new topics search to see if I should read or weigh in on something - these days things tend to already have 20 replies by the time I see them and at that point I'm generally superfluous and/or unwilling to read those 20 (which my policy requires.) I still refresh them anyway, though~ I tried to do things for the site when I could and was nonlazy enough. A few of the torrent releases we've got are partly or mostly thanks to my work, and I actually uploaded two to one of Fuwa's seedboxes back when Aaeru was still around. Eventually I got to be a writer for VNAer. I was pretty slacky after a brief burst of activity, but these days I've picked up the pace on that somewhat (look and see ). My belief in the ultimate fuwanovel goal of making VNs popular in the west (aim high, realize that more popular is as far as we're going to get heh.) is a big part of why I'm doing it these days. Massaging my ego helps, of course - though I'm probably not read by that many. VNs didn't stop me from escaping from reality, but they did make that escape a much more vivid. I've experienced some great stories through VNs, equally or perhaps more engrossing than good books I've read - especially on the emotional front. VNs were often romance-themed much more than the usual Western story I'd read before (reading romance books as a man is pretty embarrassing, and they're aimed at women in the West.) With VNs I could discount that (reading the VNs on a faptop in my room, door closed...), and it's quite possible my inexperience with the type made me rate them higher than experienced reader would - I wonder how much this is a factor for other people. VNs led me to Fuwanovel, got me on twitter (much better than expected), and generally made my life revolve around the scene. I think my days now are somewhat better than what I had before. And when I read an engrossing VN far into the night... that's a pretty nice ride. I did also stop reading regular books though, so I suppose I lost something (A Memory of Light gazes mournfully upon me...) I still need to fix RL though. Ah well, nobody's perfect.

To appeal to Western aesthetics, you'd have to age the characters by at least 10 years in appearances and take it out of a school setting. We're probably used to the high school plot device by now, but that's the weakness that Japanese story tellers can't hurdle over if they want to appeal to a massive Western audience. Anime and manga I understand what audience is being targeted, but I assume people who play VN are mature enough to handle a wider variety of landscapes. I know they won't be able to handle their moege any older though in all seriousness. They'd probably lose a lot of their original fanbase if they moved in this direction. Western taste differs a lot from Eastern. Think Batman and the Walking Dead. I assume there are lot of people here who are from the West but have Eastern tastebuds in mind anyway.

Fuwa helps by raising awareness, however as the population of a community increases, the overall quality might decrease. So, however unlikely it is, take this example: If CoD people grew an attraction to VN's, I do not think that would help to be honest. I'd rather let VN's stay to the few people that have managed to find them by their own means. The problem this creates is that this causes a tiiiiiiiiiiiny Western VN market. But thanks to the translators, that problem is alleviated to some degree. I'd still like VN's to be localized, just not showed to everyone in the public.

And I did make this thread knowing full well that this already is a heavily discussed topic among the anime community. But seeing how Fuwanovel never had a thread about this, I thought I actually could start a discussion. And maybe it will. Chances are it wont, but it could. I'll have you know Nico is 17 years old and a 3rd year in highschool although she is flat chested. Anyway this topic was once discussed heavily and i agree with Nayleen on the fact that it's a constant back and forth because it comes down to people's tastes and everyone has their taste and particularly here the amount of lolicons is higher so you'll have a biased opinion. I believe in keeping it 2D as well, i think the issue boils down to sexualization of children in 2D and that's a long on going discussion that has good arguments for both sides on wether it's okay or not. Me personally i believe in freedom of expression and separation of 2D and 3D hence why i'm for no kind of censorship whatsoever and that includes lolis obviously. If you have a fetish that is not harming anyone (aka anything 2D) then i don't see the problem with it. You can release all your sexual urges and not harm a single human being. Bu if you can't keep 2D and 3D separated then you need to check a doctor because that's a likely medical issue. And if you do something wrong in the 3D world then you'll be punished as a criminal, simple as that. Keep it safe, keep it 2D.

I completed 320+ Anime till now and I have all of them on my HDD and I have another 200-300 anime on my HDD that I plan to watch and I always download more, especially around the end of season when anime seasons end airing and then I download everything I want to watch from that season usually around 20-30 excluding OVAs and movies. As for formats it all depends from anime to anime, usually 720p and I download my favorites in 1080p but I have some smaller formats too for old anime that don't exist in better formats or/and for long anime like Naruto, Bleach etc. For a list look at my MAL profile. I recommend that you stay away from the translation. I tried it, and it was utterly horrendous. Even though I was actually enjoying the VN, I was forced to drop it as the TL really ruins the experience.

As a storytelling format, the VN is actually quite a superb medium. It appeals to hearing and visual aesthetics, in addition to allowing the imagination room for interpretation through the text. I'm an avid reader of books in general, and I am otaku. For me, Japanese VNs were something of a miracle, because they addressed my love of the written word, as well as being otakuish to appeal to my love for anime. I imagine that a lot of people that get into VNs aren't quite conscious of precisely why they like them so much (other than people who love nukige, lol).. One thing you have to grasp is that we tend to present VNs incorrectly as a medium when trying to make them appeal to westerners. People who like anime or manga might very well be unable to stand VNs, precisely because they don't like having to read text to the extent a VN requires. However, someone who is into anime, manga, and light novels is very likely to also be a viable VN fan. The problem occurs when you are trying to appeal to people outside of those narrow requirements. To be blunt, all VNs currently made, with a few exceptions, primarily hold appeal to people who are already otakus and only them. Did any of you start with VNs? I've yet to meet someone who has. Even for most of us, VNs are something we got into through something else, not something we started out of the blue from no contact with Japanese culture. If you want to market VNs to non-otakus, you are going to be forced to either turn them into otakus through one of the other options (manga, anime, etc) or take the step of encouraging the making of primarily western-influenced VNs that appeal to western values and culture. To be blunt, people who become otakus are people who tend to find it easier to accept other cultures' ideas and ways of thinking... or at least be able to enjoy them.

I was about to post about this. Honestly I am disappointed. I was really enjoying it before. The ending felt rushed and without a second season will be left open ended. In the end he was powerless. Everyone else did what he could not. By episode 6 I'd have given it an 8. By the end of left at one season a 6 at best.

The closest I have seen here in Australia would be 999 and VLR, I suppose. Perhaps blending VNs with some gameplay is a good starting point? Ease our way in or something .

This is going to be long so take a seat. And don't you dare skimming through it or not reading any of the linked articles. 1. Misinterpretation of Fuwanovel mission statement I will start with this as it should be simple to explain. The portion of the mission statement that is used in the forum logo (and forum logo only) is just part of the whole mission. As you can notice on the main website, the main logo there actually describes the website differently. "Fan translated visual novels repository" And if you browse the website and visit the mission statement section, you can see the mission is actually different from what the forum logo says, it is: "Visual Novels for the World" As even included with the logo of the section: Following up in the mission statement, three main objectives are mentioned there There are three main objectives, they are: 1) Make visual novels popular in the West. 2) Promote fan translation 3) Create a community that celebrates fan translation and fan sharing. When the forums logo was made, only the first part of the mission statement was put there, because otherwise it would be too long. And many people misinterpret "West" as "America", where as it just states the general mission statement Visual Novels for the World but with different words. West in that case means outside of Japan (where Visual Novels already exist), so basically the rest of the world. What I am getting at is that nowhere on the whole website it states anything about promoting Localized copies, ensuring sales of Localized copies or celebrating success of Localization companies and commercial market. Instead it focuses on fan translation, fan efforts, fan sharing, fan creations and fan improvements to the original version. The only reason Fuwanovel doesn't share licensed versions was out of Aaeru's "good will". She decided not to include those releases as a gesture of friendliness to the companies. How those companies responded to this good will and attempts to build a friendly relationship is a different matter entirely. 2. Piracy vs Sharing The whole word "Piracy" is just wrongly used since the beginning of the internet. If you imagine piracy in a pirate movie, they invade a ship and deprive people off their possessions. But in the case of games, movies, music - that is never the case. "Piracy" on the internet just stands for "Sharing", but people for some reason needed a word that sounds evil. Instead of taking away possessions of someone else, you are being offered a shared copy of what someone already has. You are being offered a flower seed out of unlimited supply to grow your own flower and ultimately build your love for flowers to the point you want to support the people who originally imported these flowers from different parts of the world. Aaeru and Fuwanovel was always for "Sharing" and as so you could say also for "Piracy" since they are the same thing. The stuff about flower seeds and building love for flowers is much better explained in the "Spreading culture does not decrease supporters. It increases it." part of fuwanovel About section. Please read the whole article if you haven't already done so. You can notice there the part of why true fans pay money. "Your labour IS the scarcity not the copies, for it cannot be pirated." And are you going to argue that it doesn't work? Even the mentioned Steins;Gate release says exactly the opposite, many of the fuwanovel staff bought the copy even though we still direct people to the shared copy. It is not because they had to buy it, they wanted to buy it, partially thanks to the fact that the game is popularized thanks to Fuwanovel. The article mentioned above wasn't directed at localization companies however, it was mainly directed at Japanese developers and why Aaeru decided to share the copies with the improvements of additional language version. You can even see similar examples here of people buying a Japanese version if they liked the fuwanovel copy. I can even say it for myself - I am struggling to make a living and pay rent, but after finishing Iroseka (shared torrented version), I became true fan of FAVORITE, It is one of my dreams that once I solve my situation and get some more money, I will not buy some expensive food or a car or any other pleasure like that, I will buy the games with all the stupidly overpriced little perks in the box, because I want the companies to make more of it. But in the meanwhile, all I can really do is spread the word of how good the games are, link people to the Fuwanovel Hoshimemo page, praise Iroseka and make more people try to play it in Japanese now, make more people interested in translating it for even wider audience - because I know that I can find people who will fall in love with those games just like I have and maybe they will have the funds to afford the support to the companies. I was able to talk to a Japanese FAVORITE fan yesterday in pso2JP, uniting together we can get more and more fame to the company that deserves it, even though the Japanese person can buy the game with earnings from an hour or 2 of his time, and all I can do is spread the word. But I am willing to spread the word for many hours, writing reviews and comparisons, because that is all I can spare, my time. If I haven't "pirated" the games in the first place, I would never be able to do this, I would never be able to extend the fandom because I would never be able to play the game. 3. Localized releases vs Fan TL releases So as mentioned above, we are still trying to carry Aaeru's good will of not sharing localized copies, a good will even after all the things the companies have done to her in response. The good will might weaken in times of controversy we can sometimes see, but since we believe that evil should not be repaid by evil, that eye for an eye is just the wrong approach, we still continue this good will and are not sharing English licensed releases of games. But there was never such will for Japanese releases, as with those, following the points mentioned in point 2 of this post, the creator will have more success in building fandom and true fans. And as such we are sharing Japanese copy of Planetarian, a game Aaeru added to the website, improved by a collective fan effort many years ago. It is the same version a lot of you (Including me) were able to enjoy for free, thanks to the original fan effort and Fuwanovel sharing service. And the same version, translated out of passion for the game, shared between fans of Key to make their games even more popular. Without this fan copy and all the other fan translated Key games, most of us would not be able to enjoy them. Without the effort of fan subbing, lot of people would not be able to enjoy Key anime. And without that the English Key fandom would not become what it is today, a fandom that is able to organize a giant project like Key 15th Anniversary Letter. A project that will even be collaborating with Sekai project to deliver their letter, signifying their dedication. A project full of TRUE fans who will buy the official Sekai release even though they have probably played Planetarian several times. And you are asking us to simply remove all that from existence so only you and other people in the past were so privileged to enjoy it for free and become a fan. That new people cannot join the club anymore, become a fan of a free version to later potentially evolve into a true fan supporting Key by buying figs and games all over the place, just like many Fuwanovel members do. And the same goes for Grisaia, we are sharing a Japanese version of the game improved by fan translation, a version that was able to build pretty big fandom of its own. A favorite game of many thanks to the free fan translation and the free availability on Fuwanovel (among other places).
