    [Review] Sakuya

It took me only a minute to come up with my random username. That is because I love stories with robots, even more if they are love interests. Their struggle with the fact they are not human despite looking like one or acting like one is something I really enjoy to read, and cry while doing so. And that's what pulled me towards this otomege by Tetrascope. The complete story of this game is split across 3 games: the free edition, that have the base story and it was translated by people from Fuwa; the paid edition, that adds 18+ content and one additional route, untranslated; and the short append story called "Sweet Present for Shin", also untranslated. I checked all of them, and my experience with them was mostly pleasant, even if not all three parts were absolutely necessary. From the intro movie The story starts in distant future Tokyo, where robotic engineering is advanced enough to have robots indistinguishable from real people around. Although, when I say indistinguishable, I meant physically, since most of them don't possess any way of make rational decisions or emotions. They all follow the strict program built into their heads. Our hero Sakuya is the sole exception. Created by the genius scientist that also the father of our protagonist Akane (you can change her name, this is the default one), Sakuya is so human-like that the biggest robotics company don't waste a chance to strike a deal with our girl to buy him for science. The setting is pretty well crafted, with topics like unemployment, sexbots, and anti-robots movements on the rising being touched at least once in the novel. Sadly, the novel is short and its focus is in the romance between a human and a robot, so all of these questions are pretty underdeveloped. We know those problems exist, and that they are too big to tackle in a novel so short, but not much discussion about it is done either. The romance in the first route, the one in the free edition, in the other hand is pretty sweet and satisfying. Sakuya is simply the cutest boy in terms of personality I ever met in a VN. And he's not even human. He's pure, gentle and caring, sometimes naive and sometimes mature. It's easy to forget that he's an android, and that also happens with Akane and Sakuya himself. And the fact that he's not human, but also too emotional to be a robot, it's the biggest source of drama for our characters. Sakuya's asking to hold hands, WHERE'S THE CHOICE SO I COULD SAY YES??? As Sakuya struggle with what he should be... Our protagonist Akane takes the long and dense road. She acts like our usual shoujo manga protagonist, with all of the "what is this feeling?" type of things... except she's supposed to be 23, so usually she comes across as childish. In fact, Sakuya constantly gets right what she's feeling and the only thing about human interaction he knows is mostly through movies. So yeah, originality is not her strongest asset. Last but not least is Shin, Akane's childhood friend. At first you'll think he'll provide some love triangle drama, but that not happens here. Instead, he serves as a good foil for Sakuya. While Sakuya is a robot who looks like a human, Shin is pretty much a human who looks like a robot. He's always calm and composed, almost emotionless. His sprites have very little variations in expression. Even when he's talking about his memories or feelings, he's as blank as ever. The game is not voiced, so we only have to imagine how monotone he must be in those scenes. But despite all that, he does provide some interesting interactions with Akane. All flashbacks are in this style, making everything even more cute Now, let's cover what you'll get in each version. The free version is the essential one if you're interested in this game. It covers pretty much everything I said up to this point. There's no sex scenes in this version, but they are implied, and that's more than enough in this game. The paid version adds not only the porn, but also a new route and three new extra stories (that you can access in the extra menu after clearing certain endings). Is it worth though? Short answer: no. The porn that was added in the free version route is alright. We can see both Akane and Sakuya on screen, and Sakuya is as gentle as you would expect of him. But let's remember, he's a robot. Even he says at some point that he doesn't feel any physical pleasure from the act. So his face is mostly lacking in expressions, except when he reacts to Akane's reactions. It's porn that focus only in the girl again, but this time the boy really cares about how she's feeling it. The new route... it's very subpar. Most of all because of the route structure, that tricks you into thinking it's a route for Shin when it's not, and it's ending, that shift the tone of the novel to the point that I wondered if the author even cared about the character development they build until said point of the story, because they shattered it to pieces in an absolute ex Machina way. Good thing I read this first, I would have hated to finish the game in this route. Needless to say, the porn of this route is just as bad. The extra scenes are fun though, but you won't lose much if you decide to pick the free version. This version is only recommended if you want to support Tetrascope, the game is just 800 yen on DLsite, it's pretty cheap it won't hurt. It's untranslated, but the free game section subs did appeared for me even in the paid version. Young Akane, Shin and Sakuya in "Sweet Present for Shin" And finally we have Sweet Present for Shin. This is the closest of a route for Shin we'll ever get, and it was as sweet and cute as the original game. It happens 5 years before the main game, but it's better appreciated if you play after it. Finally we can see Shin a bit flustered! It's very short, but still have three endings and one epilogue that ended my time spent with Sakuya, Akane and Shin in a pretty heartwarming note. Sakuya had everything that I like: robots, robot drama, cute characters and romance. Even if the paid version route was pretty bad, it wasn't enough to diminish my love for this game. Moe robots are the best!

I had a hentai background set on my laptop, so everyone in my classroom laughed at me upon seeing it. My teacher gave me a huge scolding afterwards for "bringing porn" into school, so from there on out, I've earned a bad rep among the students. It was the most embarrassing moment in my life.

I haven't played/read much vn, so if anyone has any recommendation for a newbie, I would love to play them! Look at @Plk_Lesiak using his alternate account to promote himself. Disgraceful. Confession: I have made no particular attempts to hide my love for this medium, and all my backgrounds are of anime, but I think they're generally inoffensive. Except some of the backgrounds might look kinda girly, I guess. I've got it permanently rotating between a bunch of them. Let's take a look at the iffier ones, shall we? https://imgur.com/a/AXgBC Yeah, those are probably the most questionable images in my collection. Must be because I don't have much VN stuff. In short, anybody that looks at my laptop can see I like anime and such. This post, however, might make me consider using some VN stuff. I don't like busy images which is why I haven't really found any good ones yet.

  18. Confession: As much as I like the hard-hitting punch of something like Fate/Stay Night, moege are becoming (or already might be) my favorite VN type. The ones I've ready (Princess Evangile, Noble Works) have been really fun to read and haven't had that "hump" where you take a while to get invested in the story and want to see what happens next - they've hooked me almost immediately and I've enjoyed the stories they've had to offer. Plus I like the silent comfort of knowing that things won't go belly up and leave you with a crushing sadness (*looks at Fate/Stay Night*).

  21. Honestly I would like a sequel for Majikoi that moved on a little. For example a new game which is set around 2 years after the first one. That way most of the cast is moved on but still have some of them in the school and in the city. It would also give plenty of opportunity to have them make a cameo. This way they could focus on the first years that are coming in to town and maybe have them live in the Shimazu dorm as well We could see a new group of friends getting together in a game like this instead of having them already know each other. I think a VN like this would make a nice sequel with new characters while retaining the charm of the original. Personally I would also enjoy having an MC and some guys who are good fighters and on the girls level. Something similar to Dragons Rioting so the MC is on the level of Momoyo just holding back for most of the time for reasons. But thats just my personal preference I gotten a little bored with how Minatosoft always doing the "weak guys, overpowerd girls" thing.

    Hi Everyone!

Welcome to Fuwa dude. VN's are "read" (though some VN's have gameplay mechanics). It doesn't really matter though xD Some suggestions.... Grisaia no Kajitsu https://vndb.org/v5154 . Looks like a standard Slice of Life comedy. But the humor is ramped upto 11. And the edgy backstories for each girl are ramped upto 11 (you may have to shed some manly tears occasionally). Some routes has some political type intrigue as well. CLANNAD https://vndb.org/v4 . Another Slice of Life affair, with themes about life and family. Oh, and this VN is really adept at punching you in the feels ..... a lot. Prepare to shed manly tears.... and I mean a lot of manly tears. Also, the music is awesome! If my Heart had Wings https://vndb.org/v9093 . For more laid back Romance Slice of Life Comedy. Some scenes and music are breathtaking too... Lucy, the Eternity she Wished for https://vndb.org/v16743 . If you're interested in androids or AI, check this out. Even if you're not, check it out anyways (it's a pretty short VN). Steins Gate https://vndb.org/v2002 . If you want a thrilling Sci-Fi plot. Nekopara https://vndb.org/v15538 , and Wagamama High Spec https://vndb.org/v17823 . For shameless sexy action

  26. Looks like a straight up nukige, and yet they are putting it on steam and kickstarter. Wonder if the all-ages game will have any content at all, or if it will be like Subahibi where you literally can't play it without the patch. In which case Steam seems like an odd platform for the primary distribution of the game, as was the case with Subahibi. Frontwing seems dead set on not even trying to make their own website with adult titles, like Mangagamer and Denpasoft, and instead just bank fully on Steam + patches. It does look cute though, so I might get it. Though, I doubt I'll pledge for anything over a digital edition. The Corona Blossom physical rewards STILL haven't shipped, which makes me fear I'll have to wait another two years before I'll see my physical edition of this, so.

    Hi Everyone!

First of all, welcome! If you enjoyed Zero Escape, I recommend Ever 17 since the writer for Zero Escape also wrote Ever 17. Most of the vns you've played are vns I played when I was still a vn newbie so I think you may be walking down the same path as me (Ghost Trick isn't a vn by the way, according to vndb) This was my first vn series and even now it remains one of my favorites (especially Trials and Tribulations). The State of VNs

Your hands that gently apart from your favorite game are certainly warm, wherever they are The voice that tells me what to do – I can't disobey it My body that comes from the shadow is breathing faintly And in this space between these moments, red and golden colors are dying your favorite game That’s right, I am continuously struggling moebuta Destroying everything I touch I don’t have time to take a break I'll be coming And so below the sky of the east brightly burns my heart I go drunk on the fetishes incarnated there Within my heart I hide away the lies that I like peeing girls Lolis are getting their menarche But still, I will not stop living on forward Even as the yuzu and sagapura cast their overlapping shadows on me That’s right, I am forever hunting moebuta Even though I know not why I still face forward I don’t know even how to fight back I’ll be coming And so beneath the sky split in half by the moegods I dream of days when I will be finally able to play games without pee and menarche

    The State of VNs

You know, I kind of agree with that, in a broad sense. Though, ironically the best written VNs in that sense would be nukige and purely comedic VNs (and, probably, moege). Every line there actually has a clear purpose: to lead to the next h-scene and have the player aroused in the process, or to entertain the player with every line, respectively. With plot-focused VNs... yeah, it's complicated. First of all, I'm definitely not against including slice-of-life scenes in a more serious plot, even though technically they are semi-pointless. Well, @Thyndd more or less said it in his post, so I'm not going to repeat it. At the same time, there's always a limit of how much slice-of-life should be there. Not every person is patient enough to sit through 20 hours of shitty comedy to get to the good parts. And, well, it's also true that technically you're supposed to develop the characters during the plot, not before the plot stars. I'm not sure how true it is in terms of VNs (for example, I simply can't imagine how Muv-Luv would work without Extra) so, maybe, it's just another method to do the same things. On the other hand, I agree that this scene from SubaHibi is completely random and probably shouldn't be there in the first place. Though, it's an h-scene, and we all know what its real purpose was. SubaHibi for me is a good example of how a needlessly fetishistic H-scene might actually hurt the story (and don't take me wrong, I love SubaHibi). Actually, the sex in It's My Own Invention actually makes pretty good sense to me: it shows well how completely messed up in the head a certain character is. My biggest problem is with Looking Glass Insects. I don't know. I guess, I have to accept that these scenes exist simply for porn and see them as such, but I'm still looking for a meaning for some reason. So, in general, I do agree with you that VNs tend to lack substance sometimes, and they do things much more slowly than they are probably should be done, but there are too many details to speak of. Ultimately, I'm not dissatisfied with the current state of VNs to the point where I stop enjoying them. There's still enough good things they bring to me, and I'm willing to bear with things I don't particularly like. Well, if it changes at some point, I will find a new hobby, that's simple.

    The State of VNs

I believe the quoted post from 4chan is both intruguing and silly. As an indie book publisher that has been recently been researching the VN "industry", I think it's true that a self-publishing writer could possibly find a better chance to success by working on a VN, but only if he has PLENTY of time, money and/or programming/artistic/marketing skills. It's easy to point at DDLC and say "Hey, I could have done that easily", but in most case it would be a blatant lie since, as already stated, DDLC is both clever and well crafted. Probably the same applies to Sakura games (haven't tried them). I strongly believe that Visual Novels have a lot of potential which hasn't been exploited yet, but if someone just wants to make some quick cash I would strongly recommend to just publish erotica ebooks (that aren't actually that easy to sell if you don't know what you're doing or have no niche to target, but that's another story) and stay the fuck away from VNs as of now.

We're always here if you want your ideas to be shut on and possibly refined through borderline-abusive criticism. More seriously speaking, I have a lot of respect for your approach to VNs, but honestly, if I would risk constant disappointment though my contact with some medium, it would drive me insane. At some point, I would most likely have to avoid it completely. In perspective, having a shitty taste like mine and being able to casualy enjoy all kind of VNs seems like a blessing of sorts.

  48. I second this. This is the only vn I know that can be truly called 'horror' but unfortunately, the game ends in a cliffhanger On another note, Fate Stay Night and Tsukihime need actual after stories for each of their routes because Fate Hollow Ataraxia and Kagetsu Tohya aren't really sequels at all. I'd also like an after story for the true ending of G senjou no Maou as well.
