  5. Committing money to an unreleased product is always a gamble--except unlike gambling, any surprises will generally be unpleasant. The entire premise of crowdfunding is to push the risk of creative development from developers onto end-users. If risk avoidance is your main priority, then any first-time publisher will be a greater risk than Sekai Project--and really, you shouldn't be in the crowdfunding business at all. Take that money and invest it--where you'll be compensated for taking risks, rather than penalized.

  6. http://otakuspirit.com/2018/04/why-ill-never-support-sekai-project-again/ So @Zenophilious posted this article in the Fuwaserver the other day and it describes a single person's experience with Sekai Project and its Grisaia Kickstarter. I thought it'd be a fun discussion to bring up everybody else's experience with them and what they think of them. Personally, I find them to be unprofessional with some of their releases and they have a plethora of problems that I've already described in a previous thread. Whether you're an SP fan and apologist, or a person who dislikes SP, leave what you think below and most importantly, have fun.

Hello, Kiri desu. On this week's blog we will be going over why blonde hair is so bad that I claim it to be. First on our list is that many blonde girls are gaijins (foreigners.) First example is Lena from Senren Banka: She just memes around and uses Nippongo (Japanese) all wrong all the time saying fucked up things. Also look at those massive boobs she has on that pic + that beautiful neck. SMH Just absolutely adorable. HONTO KAWAII Second example is our ninja enthusiastic A-chan from FloFlo Just like Lena she has some wrong (very) impressions of Japan. Here we can listen to her talk. Absolutely cute. Second on our list is that blonde hair is often related to gyarus or delinquents. First one of these beauties is girl called Reina from Kirikoi. She is one of my favorite girls. Girls that are always happy and are not afraid to take skin contact and comfort you when you are feeling down are truly precious treasures. Second beauty is Ria from Kirikoi too. She is a delinquent but actually cares for others efven though she doesn't show it. Very good. Third and last thing on our list is that some of them are TSUNDERES. Tsunderes are literally the best thing that has happened to the humanity (after blondes.) No other explanation needed. -END-

  8. Happy to hear that! And I very much recommend to have Mask of Truth ready, because the moment you finish Mask of Deception... you're not gonna want to wait and see what happens. Good luck with the epic journey!

  9. How is this? Would you say it's worth a purchase, or? Most of the comments I've come across don't seem to be very positive towards Moenovel but that seems to be due to their policies and not necessarily because of the VN itself so I'm a little torn... Awesome - thanks! I'm going to snag it ASAP. Just waiting to see what goes on sale during Golden Week before grabbing a copy. Between this and the bits of Tears to Tiara 2 I've tried, Aquaplus are really making themselves one of my favorite VN developers. I also really want to grab a copy of ToHeart 2. I'd made a thread a couple of weeks ago asking for recommendations and that was one of them.

  10. AA3 Trials & Tribulations final case: Did I say the writers really like them Fey girls in my last post? Well I spoke too soon, the last trial is ALL ABOUT them Fey girls, bejezuz Having good ol' Miles defend Iris for the first part was great, maybe I should check out AA Investigations... Iris herself had some nice twists, especially towards the end you're just like d'awww Phoenix . Really surprised they were able to get so much mileage out of Dahlia's character, thought she was just fodder since she was in the first trial which is usually set aside as the tutorial trial, man that gal ruined or attempted to ruin so many characters' lives its unbelievable I said Ema > Maya a while ago but after spending so much time with Maya now I take it back, Maya's irreplaceable <3 ~~ AA4 Apollo Justice: Wtf where's Nick? Who's this prick named Apollo and his wannabe Mia Fey mentor Kristoph Gavin? *Finishes case 1* well that was quick student-teacher relationship ._. WHOOA WHOA WHOA WHOA WTFFFFFF 7 years passed AND NICK LOST HIS --- WTF DAUGHTER TRUCY?!?! She makes a great companion btw~ I spent the entire game more interested in wanting to know what's up with Phoenix so I wasn't really invested in the new characters and cases but they were enjoyable nonetheless Klavier is really meh prosecutor, had his moments but eh. So far my ranking of them would be Miles > Godot > Franziska > Manfred > Winston > Klavier. Yes Even Winston Payne > Klavier Ema is back! And 25! Her munching on Snackoos animation is <3 Maya is gone! I saw a lot of complaints about her complete nonexistence in this game, even when it comes to the last episode's flashback trial, it's like ????? Not really fond of people having "powers", I guess they wanted to spice things up but I liked the game when it was just all about hard facts and deductions, not this "I CAN SEE YOU'RE LYING BECAUSE YOUR NOSE TWITCHED, TELL DA TROOTH!!!!!" or Magatama psyche-lock crap Game ends with the biggest "everybody is related" trope ever to explain all of the questions the plot build throughout, by the end of it you'll stop being surprised that X is related to Y who is related to Z who is related to Zelda who is related to Sephiroth who's related to Donald Trump. ~~ AA5: Dual Destinies. Hm. The 3D animated sprites are actually new enough, aka alpha-stage looking, aka look, idk, worse, than 2D sprites? Maybe I'm just not used to them. It's the same level of trauma i had going from Zero Escape 999's 2D sprites to Zero Escape VLR's 3D sprites >.> vs They also threw in some anime-style cutscenes too which is appreciated, though I'm not used to ENG dubs and hearing Phoenix say anything other than Objection / Hold It / Take That xD Other than that, I'm on Ep 2. No other significant impressions so far

  11. My god, playing Persona 5 with the English dub really left me unprepared for the horror of some of the jp voices... Kamoshida and Ryuji sound horrible. @ittakuI've heard that Kawahara has nothing to do with the new SAO, so maybe, BIG MAYBE, it miiiiiight not be a heinous crime against human rights. PD: Since the topic of Re:Zero has resurfaced... I'll say that the show certainly benefitted from the week-to-week wait. Its most important arc, the last one, was basically insane cliffhanger after insane cliffhanger, which will have quite a reduced effect when binge-watching it. Also, the whole theory crafting and discussing while the show aired, etc. It was an anime with some actual depth/substance, in a genre that tends to be filled to the brim with filler garbage.

  12. Like some other JRPGs, it kind of divides itself into 2 games. The first is generally more chill, then ends on a climatic cliffhanger, and the second game is the "true" development. So you'll get quite a bit more fighting on Mask of Truth! (while still having chill sections, do not fear)

  13. To me Ninty's always been about them brands, who have Toy Story 3 / Incredibles 2 / Finding Dory level nostalgia powers over most millenials who grew up knowing these iconic plumbers and Heroes of X(time/wind/skyward) and so that's why they can get away with it I actually never played any assassin's creed games but yeah I played all non-handheld Zeldas and always liked them so idk

  14. Because it is Zelda, and Zelda is on a pedestal, whereas Assassins Creed is wallowing in the mud of Ubi Soft.

  15. While Zelda games are released periodically they're not pushed out every 8 months so to speak. They're also not exactly known for having game breaking glitches at every turn.

  16. Currently reading Utawarerumono: Mask of Deception, and absolutely loving it. It's so much fun to read. I don't know how they keep introducing characters and giving them enough time, effort, and uniqueness to be memorable, but it seems to be working really well. Almost everyone (and certainly the team members) I've come across has had some sort of quirk that makes them interesting, and I find that I'm greatly enjoying the slice-of-life moments as a result. Spoilers below. I haven't laughed this hard at a VN since Majikoi, and I'm really enjoying it. It's such a fun read. I do wish it had a bit more of the fighting sections, since the battles are quite fun, but it's really good even so.

  17. It's really just a bunch of keywords, which you will learn in no time. Here is an incomplete list: Moege: declare your love to this is keyword to start the fighting game MoeNovel: same as moege, except this expert difficulty level will disable your supporters Loli: moege in easy mode. You will get a lot of supporters MT: an approach to read visual novels where you ignore the story and is only interested in unlocking graphics HCG: the reason you started reading your first visual novel Plotge: the reason why you still read visual novels even after having read 10 H scene: a poorly written scene with boring text and no story progression, yet nobody wants it removed Manga: unvoiced visual novel with no branching points Nukige: lack of storyline Kamige: used for a visual novel, which you really want to read, but can't find

  18. Well, everyone already mentioned it. Better graphics, you need an editor fluent in English, the layout of your page looks okay, but the sprites need work. I can't look at them for long, those hands creep me the hell out. For campaigns like this, I really think it's 80% graphics and 20% story. You've got to have flash, glitz and glamour or no one will give this project a second glance.

  19. I don't. But I certainly don't wish for your project to burn to the ground. It just needs a lot of work. Cannot stress "a lot" enough.

  22. 7in the case of WAS, the developer apparently shafted SP pretty bad on a bunch of stuff. SP should have done more vetting, but at the same time, I can't really blame em for that project specifically.

  23. I'm assuming that you're just shitposting, but I actually went and counted each unreleased title Sekai (I'm including Denpasoft and non-JP titles that aren't in English, because they're most likely translating them) and MangaGamer have. Sekai: 30 titles (not including the secret announcements they added to their tracker) MangaGamer: 22 titles (I'm not including DLC, and I'm not including the titles they hinted at but didn't announce yet) I'm not too sure if this list is comprehensive, and I'm too lazy to double-check : P

  24. Ah, good, good. And, certainly, the first few episodes basically introduce the main cast and context... and then the insane show begins.

  25. In case Pulltop really did that, then it won't be matter much because NarKarma itself was all age VN in the first place, and Pulltop blunder was they did cut the H scenes for overseas release.

  26. You can get some information about publishing figures. Just not anything about visual novels directly. All of the information about licensing fees and licensing terms is very much secret. But there are times when companies get forced to reveal these secrets: when they have to go to court. If you want to sue over something, you have to file the contracts, including real dollar figures, with the court. And court documents are public. Some lawsuits in the video game and anime business have resulted in some real interesting info surfacing over the years. The complete contract between Bungie and Activision for publishing Destiny (which originally contemplated that Destiny 3 would already be out and Destiny 4 would come out next year) can be found here. A writeup of the significant parts (a contract is rather dry and boring) is here. Now, Destiny is a far cry from your average visual novel. But it's the only time a full contract has been released that I could find. A bunch of stuff was released in the lawsuits over Curt Schilling and 38 studios: you can find more here and here (note that the actual document trove is no longer online). But even that's a bit far afield. There is some very interesting license data from the implosion of ADV Films, though. When ADV was falling apart, Funimation sued them over a debt they said they bought from a Japanese company. That led to some dollar figures being released. We know how much ADV paid for certain shows. The list is on ANN and while anime is more popular than VNs, of the three I found, it's the closest match. I'm not going to reproduce the list here (just check ANN). But there are a few things I can say about it: 1) It's not clear what these numbers are. Are these the up-front minimum guarantee prices? Or is this the total amount paid, including the up-front minimum guarantee and all the royalties that were owed? Did they even owe any royalties? The Crunchyroll coverage seems to imply that ADV paid a flat $25K per episode for 009-1. 2) Does this include the costs of translating the show and producing the DVDs? Almost certainly not. $21,335 for a TV show with 39 episodes (UFO Ultramaiden Valkyrie) is not enough money. 3) The numbers vary widely. The lowest price for a TV show is $21,335 for UFO Ultramaiden Valkyrie. That's barely more than the $20K for the Air movie. The highest price is pushing a million: $960K for Kurau Phantom Memory. Four of the listed shows cost ADV more than three quarters of a million dollars, and one more is just under. On the flip side, six others cost less than sixty grand. The most expensive show cost ADV nearly forty five times the least expensive. 4) Licensing costs are probably paid by every company in the business. Even MoeNovel (a Pulltop subsidiary) probably on paper pays Pulltop for the rights. This is something I learned when I got a job. I worked for the phone company for awhile, and I found out my department pays another department for the phone lines. This seemed really weird to me; I was like 'why bother?' My coworkers explained that because of the way budgets work, if that division provided the phones for free, their numbers would look terrible. The cost savings they generated would make everyone else in the company look good, but their bottom line would look terrible. This would lead to them getting punished (for being 'unprofitable') for being successful. Likewise, Moenovel is owned by Will. Money that they generate goes into Will's pockets. But they made that money off of Pulltop properties. So the deals need to be structured in such a way that the Pulltop entity reaps the rewards of Moenovel's success. It is probably safe to assume Moenovel pays something to Pulltop. The only company that might not have to do this 'one part of the company pays another' thing is Frontwing, because they might not have set up a different entity to run the overseas business. It's hard to say. 5) The non-licensing related costs are going to be relatively fixed and predictable. They will be a product of the size (in bytes) of the script, with added complications for things like actual gameplay elements. Scripting costs (engine work) are less predictable, but compared to a 45X variance factor in licensing costs? That's not too significant. 6) Licensing costs vary widely. Sol Press seems to be licensing on the cheap (i.e. not going after famous or hugely-successful Japanese projects). For all but the cheapest licenses, however? Licensing fees likely dwarf all other costs associated with the release. Witch's Love Diary's script is about 1.5 megabytes, or about 750K characters. Now I know MG pays by the character (everyone does) but not how much: if they pay 1.5 cents per, that's about $11K. If they pay 5 cents per, that would be about $37K. [Edit: Apparently some companies pay by the character, some by the line. That probably won't change this math too much.] Both of these guesstimates are on the low end of the ADV price chart. Visual Novel licensing fees are going to be quite a bit lower (they have to be, or there's no business to be done, sales just aren't high enough). But still. 7) For most titles, the licensing fee is probably the biggest cost. Since this is the part that's least predictable, it's extremely difficult to say what a given title might have cost.

  27. There is a term for this in English. It's called a slip of tongue, which is when you say something you know deep inside, but for some reason or another want to keep secret from everybody else. Things are going well here. We teach you better English while we get to know you better in return.

  30. Wagamama High Spec Summary The story revolves around Narumi Kouki, a high school student who also draws a manga serialized in a weekly magazine. Because the manga he draws is a risqué romantic comedy, he keeps this fact a secret from everyone around him, with his younger sister Toa and his sister's best friend Mihiro being the only ones who know. But one day, as the student council president Rokuonji Kaoruko is searching for male members for the student council, she finds out that Kouki is the manga's author. Kouki joins the student council in exchange for Kaoruko not revealing his secret. However, the vice president, Sakuragi R. Ashe, strongly opposes him joining, and in the midst of all this, various requests and troubles of students begin to pile up. Ending Guideline / Suggested Route Order This VN has four heroines, Ashe, Kaoruko, Toa, and Mihiro. Since this is charage, there's no locked route there so feel free to play whatever the route that you want first. Route Guideline Rokuonji Kaoruko Sakuragi Roofolet Ashe Narumi Toa Miyase Mihiro Attribution This walkthrough is based on the walkthrough at Otaku Lair with some adjustment made by myself.

  31. i was thinking about this one day and zelda and assassins creed are a lot alike. very little gameplay changes from game to game, theyre both released periodically. yet zelda almost each time is released gets highly praised while people say theyre tired of assassins creed game after game. why is that? and if you just hate zelda simply because its nintendo and never actually played a zelda game then you really dont add anything to the discussion so please dont bother. sorry if nintendo still making video game consoles first offends you. i think its the level of interaction and reward you get from the game. in assassins creed you usually get a number of rewards out of cutscene and and its just a boring sound effect with no response from your character. in zelda on the other hand, you get a satisfying little jingle followed by link holding it up in glee. despite one being mute, he has more personality and enjoyment than the talking protagonist. with assasins creed, especially with those flags you gotta collect, he just walks through them with no response at all. its the game saying you got a reward and not the character. plus zelda is usually bright and colorful. idk, thats my two cents. you get more feedback from the muted character than the one seeking revenge.

  34. I think Sekai Project receives too much flak. People are quick to jump on an internet criticism bandwagon without knowing the full story behind things. It's clear that their recent releases are of unusually low quality, but they also have an extensive portfolio of quality successful releases and are making motions to fix the ones that are not-so-quality. My primary concern is that they're very opaque and don't divulge information to people that have paid good money for their product until they're forced to.
