  1. Hey everyone, The other day, I received a private message that I would like to share with the Fuwanovel community. I think this particular message brought up some valid points that I have been noticing people are confused about when it comes to the podcast, and I thought it would be best to address them. Hopefully this will help clear some stuff up for those that feel there are still some unanswered questions. At the end of this post, I will also be hosting a new idea for the podcast coming after episode 10. I would love some feedback on this idea and see if it will liven up the excitement so it isn't always the same formula each and every time. Anyways, here are the points that were brought up in the PM and my responses to them: 1. The guests: I believe leaving the guests come and go so freely might not be a good idea. I wouldn't like to bring forth any examples, but on more than one occasion a guest has come forth not really answering much. I think you might wanna put a few restrictions as to who can participate and who can't. An example would be like a)only senior members allowed, B) state 3 reasons why you wanna join this episode. Those two sound a little harsh, but I suppose you can come up with better ones. A: While I do understand that there are guests in the podcast episodes that don't have as much to say, I feel this point is a drawing a fine line for the community and not allowing everyone to participate. One of the major points I want to reflect on from this suggestion is that in all reality, getting volunteers for episodes is already hard enough. I do my best to advertise for those episodes and try to keep each of the episodes varied (one with a specific visual novel/anime topic and another with a more open ended opinion question), however the lack of volunteers is just what it is: a lack of volunteers. Limiting the restrictions on who is allowed to join would not only make some people feel left out, but also make it very very hard to find volunteers, if any at all. Still, I want to also know what the rest of the community thinks about this, since perhaps the problem itself lies in the fact the episodes aren't as appealing to many people. How can I make them more appealing? Is there a way I can motivate others to offer more suggestions? Let me know! 2. Preparing questions: I've already said this to you before, but i think it would be better if everyone knew the questions beforehand. Another good idea: ask your guests what questions they think would be better, if any should be removed; you can even ask them for any questions they might want to add. I think that would calm everybody down a little before the recording. A: This point doesn't need to be touched on. I agree with this 100%. I have been somewhat lax when it comes to better preparation, and I have been focusing on improving that for future episodes. When a time is established, I will be sure to PM a list of all the questions to those in the episodes from here on out so they have time to prepare. 3. I noticed you at times seem to get a little off topic, no problem! Just ask a guest beforehand to warn you about it, so you don't lose track of things. A: While I can't always argue this, the truth of the matter is that without that filler in some places, the time would not fit the bill of the podcast episode length. If I didn't play the "filler" role in certain instances, the conversations would die a lot sooner and the time would be cut drastically. Now, I don't necessarily think this is a bad thing, however would anyone be opposed to organizing the times of the recordings a little differently? For example, have the length be a minimum of 45 minutes, but allow for that 15 minute extension if need be? I am open to ideas on this, so let me know. 4. Guest Interaction: What I think would be a wonderful idea to add to the format of the episode is if there could be a segment at the end were the guests could ask each other some questions about anything. That would be pretty interesting, especially when theirs more than one opinion clashing hard. A: I am not opposed to this idea, however one thing I have noticed in many of the podcast episodes is that it tends to be too one sided on the "question - answer" track. What I mean by this is that I ask a question, and people answer; the formula does not change. What I want to encourage is more discussion among the members. If someone brings up a good point I want them to agree, expand on what the other people say, or hell, even argue against them in a friendly matter. This not only extends the time the guests are interacting with one another, but also directly correlates with point number 3 in that it would mean I would be talking less and letting the conversation guide itself. Perhaps I am not doing a good enough of job of driving this point home? I'm not sure, but if you have any suggestions regarding this as well, please let me know. Anyways, that's it for the PM suggestions. Based on these ideas I wanted to suggest a new idea that may or may not work for the podcast, but it is something I wanted to try out if possible. Alternative hosts for the episodes. One thing I have noticed is that people love to volunteer for topics they enjoy talking about, and those who suggest topics want to see people talk about certain things they think would be interesting to hear people's opinions on. What if, as I said above, we change the host of the podcast for a few future episodes so new people get a chance to run the show? In essence, I would still be responsible for the recording and management of the episode, however the host and the person asking the questions would be different each time. Not only would this allow users to talk about the things THEY want to talk about, but also give everyone a chance to have a chance at hosting. In short, this would be a great experiment and give me some great ideas to work off of in the future. Tay and Batman are obviously very different in style when it comes to hosting a podcast, and there are things I love about what they do in their respective episodes. I would love to see other people being in the spotlight and leading the charge! But anyways, let me know what you think about all of this. I hope this post answers some of your questions and clears up a few loose ends. PS - I wish females existed on the internet.

Several years ago I wasn't doing a thing with my life, but then I found VNs. Now, a bit over 2 years later I'm sill not doing a thing with my life, but I'm also playing porn games.

(now I understand you batman) But anyway's I'll just say that i agree that i don't think i prefer one archtype over the other. Some are done right, wile other aren't. Kud from LB was a fun loli...

  5. To put it simply, I found love. Visual novels have the beauty that most of the other forms of media, as well as IRL itself, never had - that is, when the story is not aimed at children/family type of audience. And while anime has some of it, it doesn't offer nearly as much connection to the characters (first-person perspective), immersion (thank you, loads of amazing BGM), options (I've had enough of "romance" harem anime with no actual romance) or let you go at your own, comfortable pace. Getting to intimately know the heroines you come to like is another good point, but I digress. I feel like visual novels have filled up a large empty part in me. They help me learn about different sides of the argument and form opinions as well as stimulate thinking in general - particularly useful for someone who has always lacked common sense. Since I've read practically every translated VN I found interesting, my passion has brought me to the obvious next step - I am mostly done with joyo kanji and it shouldn't be too long now. My current goal is to read at least one route in some easy Japanese VN (Hanahira excluded ) this summer, which would otherwise be going to waste like most of the others (there was a time when I spent a month reading books, but in the end I just didn't get hooked on them). Some day I want to translate a VN or two as a tribute, but that's a longshot. And to think that only half a year ago I couldn't imagine myself learning (and studying) any new foreign languages other than German, which unfortunately I will need. While I don't really have the ability to spread the word, visual novels are something I hold very close to heart.

  8. I'm sorry, but your post doesn't make any sense. Just because certain types of content or cliches exist within works, it does not mean they only serve as some sort of a bait to encourage consumers. In most cases, they exist because authors either thought it would be fun to include them, or because they matter, be it story or gameplay wise. Saying vn's use porn to encourage playing them is a bit of an exaggeration; in the same spirit, we could say as well that porn industry exists to encourage worldwide procreation. Sakura Spirit wasn't aiming to be any sort of an extraordinary work to start with; it's an indie (western doujin) game with lots of fanservice and naughtiness, and that's preety much fine. At times you might simply want to relax, both physically and psychologically, instead of getting all "deep and dramatic". Games like Sakura Spirit exist to serve that purpose. Tragic writing and really poor execution are the only problems, which make it hard to call the game enjoyable. On the other hand, graphics are really good; especially the backgrounds. I'd say they are on par with high quality jp titles. Too bad the rest doesn't live up to them.

  9. You know, let's not be moralfags here: there's nothing wrong with Ecchi. Sakura Spirit's problem is its god-awful writing. Still, I'd probably torrent it just to see by myself...

  10. Well, there's a few reasons I stay up in the rankings. 1, which is the most importantly, is sacrificing sleep for the sake of this event. I started the event with 52 LP at my disposal, so if I go to sleep with 0LP, I'll have a little over 5 hours before my alarm goes off and wakes me up to play. Also, with over 50 LP, a love gem recharge let's you play the daily song twice, which is 27 x 2 in event points, letting your get 1 play of Love Novels. At the beginning I used a few love gems but waited several minutes to recharge 2 LP to play Bokura no Live, Kimi to no Life on easy (4 LP) just for the extra points. Now, I just use a Love Gem if I feel like it. Last time I used one, I was 2 daily song plays and 1 event song play away from ranking up, as well as 4 daily song plays away from the next tier reward. So I spent the love gem specifically to get that 30 play award. Also, on average, I get an S-B on Love Novels since I always break on sliders in the middle, so I average 220 event points a play, so nothing amazing like people who can multiple-fc Soldier Game So yeah, you aren't taking the perspective as correctly as you could. You ask how I'm high up in the rankings, but it's safe to say people around my rank are either playing the same as me, or slightly more casual with more love gems spent. Ha, read a line I liked "Dammit and I thought I loved Nico" Reply: "If you think you love an idol, there is always someone who loves her more."

  13. Well that's true. I'm one of those. Maybe i'm over reacting. I still will likely play this at some point just to see how bad it is. The steam community probably doesn't care and will eat whatever you put on their plate.

  14. <---- is it not obvious If you were to ask my fetish, I would say your typical nee-san (not necessarily femdom) and tsundere. But if I'm playing a visual novel, my favorite heroines would be those who are just hard to get, and they usually take on the character of a nee-san or a kuudere. The more emotionally distant/superior they are, and the more challenging they are to get, the more I feed off of their routes. It's very interesting to see how the protagonist gets into these kinds of characters, and once he establishes a certain relationship with them they show different sides of their personality that usually come off as very peculiar. That or playing as the protag sort of compensates for my inability to get over emotional barriers with difficult women in real life.

  20. Yup, that was my bad. As for the eating, I was just starving. As for the dogs, I can't help the barking unfortunately. The microphone is very sensitive in that regard. The good news is that in future episodes I have been working on trying to set a push to talk option instead of a constant open mic where the breathing is prevalent.

  21. I for one would love to see VNs sold in physical form in Western stores . It is a non-issue for me even if they are censored versions. If you are really keen on the 18+ edition, just make it clear that there is one available in Japanese. Paying for a VN really makes me committed into giving it more patience. World End Economica was an example and I ended up really enjoying that . Games like World End Economica and Planetarian would be all right as starting points. They are mostly clean so hopefully newcomers would give them a chance............. It is nice to dream (;w;).

  26. No one said PSP ver is the original. Read carefully plz, people prefer the PSP ver because of Sana route, that's it. Also, I'm sure that there are MANY other fans that dont like H too, so get over it or go play Illusion game if you want some H.

  27. Why does Mangagamer even come up in this discussion? If they're not localizing the game, their role is insignificant. They're just distributing it--I'm pretty sure they're not funding it, so I don't even think they should be considered a publisher. The only player that really matters in an original English VN is the developer. Would you praise or blame Walmart for carrying a game that you liked or didn't like? Did Sekai Project even contribute in any significant way to this title? Did they fund it or provide resources for development?

    July MotM Competition!

So, I've read over 300 VNs (without counting nukiges). It's been really a lot, I often find out that most people I talk to here haven't read even a tenth of that. Kind of lonely, actually- there are tons of great VNs I'd love to discuss with people, but I can't seem to find anyone else who has read them. Well, I learned (still learning, I guess) jp because of them. After there wasn't anything translated to read anymore, I had to go after the untranslated ones. I most likely won't use it for anything besides browsing pixiv and reading VNs, but it's entertaining anyway. In the end, VNs are my main source of entertainment. I do a lot of exercise to keep healthy, but those aren't fun, they're just necessary. I've found myself charmed by the way VNs can tell stories. While I do have my complaints about them (for example, way too much romance) they're still pretty fun. So, yeah. They bring me lots of fun, which overall makes my mood better. That's the small impact VNs have every day in my life~

  32. If you have exposure to language learning, than you should be fine starting with Kanji and expanding from there. There are many good arguments to starting with the Kanji (the intro to RTK has good words of wisdom on the matter), just as there are for other systems. Tae Kim's book is challenging, but I'm finding myself very grateful for having done RTK first. The psychological barrier of having the Kanji over and done with is liberating, and I'm moving extremely fast into the reading phase of learning Japanese. ... So... in the end, follow what works for you. The key: don't give up, and don't take breaks. Scale waaaaay back if you have to, but always -- ALWAYS -- do new material every day.

  37. I'm sure Zoom has his reasons for not including h-content in his patch. I personally think people should be grateful he made an english patch for others to enjoy the game at least and he's put hard work into it.. it's not nice to put him down for his efforts. And like he said, you could always play the original jp version for the h-scenes if you wanted to that badly. However, if it's that much of a problem, maybe I can help. (I don't have experience in translating any hentai scenes yet.. but if you want to Zoom, I'll help you with them if you still want to.) I'm occupied with another project, but I think I'll have time to do some h-scenes. xD

  38. Another really annoying character(s) are the MC and the new character from "One Week Friends". Honestly, they are slowly ruining the anime for me. I'm starting to really lose interest and might just rate the show a 7/10.

  40. VN Name: Kimi ga Nozomu Eien VNDB link: http://vndb.org/v94 Is there already a translation project for this? It was but now it's long abandoned. Also: "yes it is very much alive, there are 2 chapters to the game and the first one is completely translated and in the editing phase." Hack/no hack: probably hacked (judging by the translation into Russian, which has been translated from English). Why do you want it to be TLed: It's from the same setting as the Muv-Luv. I really like anime adaptation, plot, character development and "age" too. It was painful form to see KMGN characters in Muv-Luv, realizing that TL project was abandoned.
