If it's such a thankless job then why are you involved in so many projects?

Maybe because he wants to share more games with the world, despite it mostly being a thankless job. People can rant about stuff and still be involved in said stuff. I absolutely hate this aspect of translation as well but i still want to to be a translator.

Imo inconclusive endings or even cliffhangers are far better than bad ones, at least with an inconclusive one you can make a sequel or add some kind of fandisk later on but with a bad ending there is no turning back...

Like Clephas, I loathe inconclusive endings. This goes for any medium. I think they showcase lazy writing more than anything. If Island is not getting a sequel, then I'd rather not read it only to leave the ending up to my imagination.

I didn't even know you get new CGs at some point. Like I said, never got to unlock any outfits or hairstyles over the course of 2 hours.

    P.S. Nora best girl.

I only figured it out because someone told me, otherwise I would have stopped at some point too and never found out about it.

Still, it's not worth the huge amounts of grinding you need to get there.

PS: Audrey will always be the best girl, but I did enjoy quite a few of the new characters, Lillian probably being my favorite out of them.

  4. I definitely agree with most of what you said.

I think what kind of kills the game isn't so much the grind (although it can get frustrating there too) but the lack of true rewards.

I'm not asking for straight up porn, but even when you unlock the hairs and dresses, all you get is a single CG. That's it. At least Huniepop gave you 4 CGs.
I wish they really had invested more time into rewarding the player, because dick trophies aren't the answer.

And this is coming from someone who actually LIKED the new artstyle and was hoping for it to be explored. Sadly, it didn't.

  5. Like many have said, Japan is likely a wonderful place to visit, but the way their society works is radically different than Western societies, and it's undeniable Japan has some big problems relating to work and school ethics. However, I still think it would be a nice place to live so long as you manage to find a stable job and stay in a nice area.

I might be the odd one out, but I love Japan's northern dialects and I would like to spend a good amount of time in prectures like Akita and other less urban regions. Dunno if that's a good idea in practice but I would really love to go there some day.

  6. TL;DR "You have hobbies I'm not familiar with, are you literally Hitler or something?"

I can not tell you the amount of awkward situations I get put into when I say I like anime, although not for the reasons you listed. (The WWII thing... lol)

You see, when I say this, people are actually generally nice and try to hold a conversation, so they keep going with questions like "what's your favorite?" or something, and this is where my grave starts being dug, because I've watched so many anime, I probably would just name obscure stuff most people didn't watch, and then they just back off when I don't answer with Naruto or DBZ.

If it's about my figures or my wallscrolls or anything, it would take a long time to explain who that character is, but people expect a straightforward answer anyway.

Worst of all is when I'm reading manga and someone comes up to me and asks what I'm reading. I tell them it's manga and then they ask what manga and then of course they don't know it when I answer, so they just walk away.

Life Pro Tip: when you know a person's hobby, don't start inquiring them on it unless you're prepared to learn things you're totally unfamiliar with. Otherwise, try to discuss more everyday topics, otakus are generally normal people too.

  7. Oh how I've fallen trap to this so many times when I typeset manga.
I tell myself "Well, I've typed it out and seen the lines with my own eyes, it can't be wrong, I know my spelling", after which I proceed to upload the work without even reading it over once, only to then be met with comments pointing out 2 or 3 typos in different pages and forcing me to OCD and turn my computer back on at 2AM to photoshop those pages again.

For shorter things (definitely not applicable to big VNs), when you don't have someone to QC/Proofread (as in, someone qualified for said position), my suggestion is to at the very least read the entire finished product a couple times yourself and show it to one or two people, chances are they'll spot a lot of the basic errors pretty easily. I've found that just having a couple people review my work before I upload it has significantly decreased the amount of typos I make.

  8. Because it only takes one "scandal" for everything to be destroyed. And trust me the West is the best at coming up with scandals.

There's demands by fans, but over here you also have all the people who turn games into a political thing and would likely attack many of Japan's games to fill their political agenda.

The west is plagued by people that work for the sole sake of running their mouths over every little thing and turn it into a national issue. Because they have nothing else to do with their lives but to complain, otherwise they have no jobs. Eroge becoming popular here would be like building a huge bait for them.

I'll say it again, all it takes is one game to get enough attention to make the whole company come crumbling down.

We have nothing but our own culture to blame.

  9. Are Japanese the xenophobic ones or are we the ones that forced them to take action against something that used to be normal for them?

I really don't like thinking that the Japanese are just xenophobic, we're a huge part of the problem, we're the ones that overreact and have power over them, that's why they don't want to consider us, because we give them a hard time for it.

I really liked seeing this side of a developer, it really goes to show that it's not just because xenophobia, but because they want to avoid legal trouble we western folks give them.
