What is your ideal VN?

Recommended Posts

1- A story that makes me care about what happens next

That's about it. To make a VN good for me, only the number 1 is needed.

However, you said my ideal VN... So get ready for some condition-spamming

2- High amount of mystery

3- Full of despair and death

4- No tsundere, no matter the kind

5- Amoral/Immoral protagonist and heroines

6- Full of awesome

7- One kouhai and one loli, at least

8- Yanderes~

9- Full of bad endings

10- Heartbreaking true end with one "good end" as an alternative

11- Hidden features

12- No sex for the sake of sex

13- A certain type of gameplay (Sengoku Rance, Daibanchou or Kamidori-like)

14- Fully animated (like School Days)

15- Awesome soundtrack and art.

16- Full of hard to notice foreshadowing to the ending

17- Consistent plot across routes

18- High quality voice-acting for all of the characters

19- Fate Stay Night skip scene system

20- Unlimited save slots

21- Typemoon-like "Taiga Dojo" or "Ciel-sensei lessons" on bad endings.

22- Skipable ending credits

23- Reasonable, realistic explanation on to why the heroine fell in love with the protagonist (if she did at all, since falling in love with the MC is not required to me)

24- At least 5 heroines, all constructed in a realistic manner

25- Over 100 hours needed to finish it~

26- Full of awesome plot twists

I guess this? I may have forgotten something, but that would be my ideal, perfect visual novel that I'm sure never will be released :P

I'm not picky with VNs though. As long as the first condition is there, the VN can become one of my favorites or my favorite, even if it doesn't have the other ones. Though having the 23th one is also important.

My top general qualities would be very cliche:

1 - Great art; particularly cute, sparkly, girly CGs

2 - Engrossing story - I like mysteries best, and things where everything is not as it seems

3 - Non-cliche characters

4 - Not too many high-pitched, annoying characters

5 - Good variety of music

6 - H-scenes that aren't a. ridiculous b. creepily rapey or c. too repetitive

I'm also going to answer this for my ideal VN in the horror genre, because it's quite specific:

1 - Centres around psychological horror

2 - Doesn't shy away from gore

3 - Has yandere characters!!

4 - Lots of twists & shocks

5 - Detailed and beautiful CGs

(If anyone knows of anything that fits the bill, then let me know ^_~)

I dream the impossible dream so...

1. More than 20 Main heroines
2. Every Genre is included in the story. (Nonsensical story, but in a way is Nakige, Nukige and other genre. Won't that be fun?)
3. The protagonist must be an epic troll! (Most Probably, it's like making the MC's bestfriend. who's usually unreliable and disturbing in the driver's seat)

If someone can actually pull this off, I'd read it.  Nukige + Nakige together is already good for me. (A tear-jerking H focused story.)

Haha that sounds completely ridiculous... I'd totally play it!!!

Following the thread creator’s lead...

My top four qualities for an ideal VN would be:

1. A strong emotion experience – The more crying the better

2. Largely or entirely female cast – Girls are pretty, cute, and most importantly I can relate to their emotions quicker. When a guy gets emotional it’s somewhat awkward, and they aren't cute or enjoyable to look at either

3. Physiological food for thought –Theories about the human condition for example

4. An underling plot thread that exists for the whole duration of the read  - Small events in the story can be amusing, but a concept that always exist and is slowly progressing keeps you reading to see what happens next

1.  Badass protagonist.
2.  At least 5 but preferably 7 heroines.
3.  Some death, whether it's from natural cause or human-instigated killings.
4.  Between 70-100 hours long.
5.  At least two of the heroines must be lolis, and one of them must be tsundere.
6.  One of the remaining heroines must as well, be tsundere, even just a little bit.
7.  Plot that can be easily followed and has many unexpected awesome moments.
8.  No horribly spoken new terminology.
9.  Relate to the modern world or realistic future.
10.  Minimal-Moderate H content.
11.  A comedic relief male character that can turn badass at certain times.
12.  NO MAGIC
13.  Optional little mini-games that add no special change to the story.
14.  Not fully-animated like School Days.  Done the normal way but with somewhat animated sprites.
15.  IT MAKES ME KEEP READING.

Hmm, let's see. I'll start with saying that my ideal vn will probably be an OELVN. The reason for this is that it doesn't have to cate to japanese tastes and thus won't have as much moral dissonance with my views. We aren't there yet, but I can dream...

Time to make shitty bullet points with multiple things in them!

1. Genre: Mystery. Probably trapped, time shenanigans, loops or similar. Add a threat of death, actual deaths... and stir. Ever17, 999 are good here but both have flaws.

2. The prose should be of high quality. VNs can work without this, but damn if it doesn't pull me in more. Think G-senjou, Saya no Uta translations but even better.

3. Graphics should use an original (if only to the vnsphere), distinctive style. It should still be pretty so no higurashi graphics plx. S;g does this decently well.

4. The system should not suck. Unlimited saves, good options, can be played on a faptop, made by someone actually competent... No real examples yet, everything sucks.

5. Choices should be decently obvious, routes shouldnt require lots of skipping to get to another. Fuck the phone trigger system in s;g... There should be a medium amount of choices.

6. Underlying thematic thread, which in the end says something about the condition of humanity. Saya no Uta is decent at this, but there are problems.

7. Delicious, delicious plot. It should not be completely dark; some comedy or more relaxing scenes can happen.

8. Memorable characters.

9. A non-stupid protagonist who is pragmatic, if still somewhat good.

Steve approves, although I would replace the last part with "Shinigami heroine" :)

1.  Strong protag (reasonably smart, capable, non-hetare)

2.  Emotionally moving

3.  well-written

4.  intellectually interesting

5.  funny

6.  good music that is also used effectively to enhance mood

Why bother writing when people already said exactly what I think. :P

1. At least over 50 hours. 70+ Would be ideal~

2. A 'final route', or at least one unlockable after the rest of the routes or after a certain heroine.

3. Good art (Live 2D~)

4. A heart-wrenching story.

5. Loli? Loli.

6. Has a overall theme.

7. Mind-screws, but the type that aren't just pulled out for no where for the heck of it, even they are mind-screws, they still have to make sense.

8. The protag actually has a personality with development. I can dream, right?

9. Full voice acting.

10. Music contains a lot of violins and pianos in a orchestrated fell of awesome.

11. A plot that creates a sense of urgency, but still is in a situation where you can have comedy scenes.

12. H if it actually fits. If it doesn't, then I wouldn't mind having any there.

13. Everything and every character serves a purpose in the story.

14. Has a interesting concept that most stories don't explore.

15. Yandere? Yandere.

16. Optional gameplay or mini-games.

17. Unlimited saves. I guess this could fit under 'Having a good system'.

18. No plot armor. Basically, anyone in the story can die even, even the main heroine or protag.

19. Lots of optional bad ends.

20. A Mystery that drives you to finish the game to find it out.

Trying to sum it up in four points :

1. It manages a wide range of emotions, it makes me laugh, it makes me cry, it makes me feel like my inner self has grown a bit in the process.

2. Attractive, varied and surprisingly deep heroines.  Heroines that make you want to play their route as soon as you first meet them, making the choice of who to go for first all the harder, and then completely surprising you by having a story way deeper than you first imagined from them. (of course that is following the concept of "dating sim" type VNs, I enjoy other VNs as well)

3. Gorgeous and original graphics.  Yes, eye candy is fun while playing a VN, and artwork that both stands out from the norm and looks good always helps pulling me into the game.

4. Good music that conveys the emotions of the scene.

If you were to add gameplay, then something like the Little Busters! minigames would be something I enjoyed, but idealy for a VN I guess I'd choose without gameplay.  SRPG gameplay like Utawarerumono or even Sengoku Rance is fun too, but detracts a bit from the VN experience IMO.

1. Intellectually-stimulating story (such as a mystery) with great plot twists.

2. Characters fleshed out to the degree that I actually care about them.

3. Diverse set of sprites that really show a wide spectrum of different emotions (if applicable)

4. Music that fits and adds to the scene.

5. As little slice of life/"fluff" as possible.

6. Original concept. It's ok if you want to make another slice of life "choose your favorite girl" game, but at least add a unique touch to it!
