KuroganeHomura Posted March 7, 2016 Share Posted March 7, 2016 I didn't choose translation quality - not because I don't care, I care a lot - but because it's usually not a reason I'll pick a game up, just a reason not to pick a game I'd otherwise have bought. The story could be awesome in it's original language, but if the translation isn't up to par then that won't really shine through. I'd end up spending more time rewriting the English in my head to something coherent, then actually being able to focus on the story elements. Exactly. I know that a few really interesting VNs I found on VNDB won't be translated which is why I'm learning Japanese to read them. It was the easiest thing to ascertain Flowers was a dodgy product even without any knowledge of Japanese (it was just bad in every facet.) I have no idea if the biggest problem is translation accuracy or the writing, though I'm guessing it's the former. At first glance going over a few parts, the English is readable (I'm guessing the editors got rid of any grammatical mistakes made by the people involved who have poor English), but could still use a lot of work. Translations like Flowers and White Album 2 are only recognized as bad by most because they're absolutely horrendous (and also because others point out how wildly inaccurate the translations are). Ehhh, I can tell when something sounds off in English fairly easily, but obviously, that's only if the people doing the editing and QC didn't do a good enough job making it into readable, good English. Admittedly, people could entirely mistranslate something and I wouldn't be able to tell as long as they consistently mistranslated it and didn't contradict themselves, and cleaned up the English afterwards. If someone doesn't put a lot of effort into making a good TL, I can't imagine they'd put a lot of effort into making a well-edited and QC'd script, which makes sense. You don't slack off only to stop slacking off at a different phase. Why are so many of the requests things that have been already translated I want new stuff not things I have already read before or things that are so old I just have no interest. This could be a disappointing year for official english VN releases. Oh wait it always is. How about some VNs made in the last few years with HD graphics and preferably have no gameplay(just read and make choices). Just like the tournament, nothing is officially confirmed to actually be released just because it made the top 10. I did a comparison in the past, looking at the chinese and japanese scripts side by side (they're not mistakes that influence the overall story much, they're things here and there). Yet, it's still one of the most loved VNs in their VN community.
