What essential features should modern VNs today have?

This is talking about stuff like settings or any feature that makes playing the game more enjoyable.

For me, I wish all games have the scene jump feature (jump to a previous scene via backlog). I get really salty if I'm playing a game that doesn't have it cause I might want to read a scene again or accidentally skipped over a part I want to read.

Some VNs don't have this? Wow, I thought every VN nowadays has an option for that.

 

+1 for decent backlog. Also more than 100 save slots would be nice seeing I used 200/1000 slots when playing Yomeyaba :makina:

no, really, all of them.

This so much. One of the most useful features of any pornographic material is having some form of cue that lets you know when the scene is about to finish so you can follow along without worrying.

Nothing feels more bitter than finishing before the people on the screen do and then being forced to watch the content you missed out on.

Skip scene mode. Like in Tsukihime. Whole scenes in one click, not with superfast-forwarding type 'skip' we have in 95% of VNs.

Character depth.

I absolutely love when a game adds depth and draw distance to the character's sprites. Some games can do it better than others, but when the artist takes the time to draw "back-shot" sprites and make them smaller to show that the protagonist is in front of the group, it really says a lot. Newer VNs have started to implement this, and I respect that kind of dedication.

To follow up on this, more dynamic sprites. Live 2D is promising but can only go so far without a decent artist/good direction. Noble Works sprites are a good example of the type of stuff I like. Sprite poses that arent just typical facing the camera type.

As a man, I only get to orgasm once every so often, that's why it's important I know when the scene is about to reach the peaking point so I can adjust myself accordingly. The problem isn't the person finishing too early because of premature ejaculation (especially because if you're just masturbating by yourself you can easily adjust when you're finishing), the problem is you thinking the scene might be reaching the climax, and so you prepare yourself for that final moment, only to then have the scene pull a faint on you and actually continuing longer than expected, but your hand already went too far and now you have semen on you and you're forced to look down in shame as the people on the screen continue having fun and you no longer take part in the action and have to go through your cooldown period with a bitter smile.

Flowcharts are even more useful if they have a jump function.
Tasogare no Sinsemilla has a really good in-game flowchart with every single flag, major scene and every single branching point that lets you jump to any point in it if you want to instead of forcing you to use save-points.
And if you forgot what scene each square refers to, don't worry, because hovering over one gives you a summary of that scene as well so you're never lost.

I would say this is only useful if you have a lot of branching paths though (and by that I mean different branches within the common route itself). Most charage/moege don't really need one.

Think most of these were already mentioned, but they are the ones I think are essential.

 

Skip to next choice option

The ability to re-load from a line in the backlog

Don't interrupt voices by going to the next un-voiced line

Ejaculation counter option

Scene recollection for everything, H-scenes in its own category

"Skip common route?" Option, (unless all the heroine specific choices are in the common route)

Re-play opening movies etc in the menu

Sprite viewer, preferably something more advanced like in Kono oozora: flight diary

Date display

 

EDIT: Backround H-scene voices, yes! So ... boring when there are none.

Flowcharts. Havent played many VNs with them, but they seem really handy.
