Is that why you recommend it vs highly recommended it?

Well, at least partially. The game is really good at what it tries to do (outside of a few, ultimately minor details I've pointed to in my previous post, including the way the final twist was introduced, how Cheshire revealed to be a Ji-Min's creation and suddenly started acting robotic after being life-like all the time, as it somewhat took me out of the experience), but it's indeed a depression simulator. If the execution was absolutely flawless, I would probably give it a higher ranking, but simply the theme and the inconclusive approach to it are something that makes me wary of pushing this VN onto people - if this is the kind of vibe they're looking for, they'll enjoy it, but with something like Mnemonic Devices or Alloys over Flowers, I'd encourage pretty much anyone to read them. :)

So in the end, the game was meh for me. I'm not going to say horrible, but not good. Also, it's a no Yuri game as you said since they do a terrible job with that part. If only they took just more time with the writing/story, it could've been better for me.

Yeah, they definitely tried too hard to make it a genre shift game and forgot that there should be SOMETHING satisfying in the story regardless. Plus, interestingly enough, one of the endings (the one there Satomi takes over the protagonist's body) only makes any sense if you're playing as a girl. This might be just poor writing though and not the g/g version being the default. :P

  3. You should add a spoiler warning on these articles. :wafuu:

Anyway, I definitely agree with on Reine Works' record, writing in their games always feels off. Not horrible, but never really hitting the mark either. I'll probably still play this one at some point, but I always had a creeping suspition it will just end up boring me to death in half of the routes...

You know, the way you describe it, it sounds very interesting. I think, it sounds like the type of story I tend to enjoy quite a lot. Right now I'm trying (and kind of failing :yumiko:) to prioritize my backlog over getting new VNs to play, but, I guess, I'll take notice of this VN and probably buy it at some point in the future when I feel like it.

I strongly believe there's never a need to hurry when it goes to games and VNs, but yeah, I think this one is worth checking out at some point, for anyone that's not fully against yuri and slight LGBT drama. The core story and characters are just THAT GOOD. :)

  5. I'd say some of the most compelling stories I've seen relied on having a consistent, living worlds in which the protagonist(s) was only one cog in the machine. The world that felt like something characters acted upon and were influenced by, and not just a background placed there to accomodate them, but never binding them to its rules. And I think making such a setting is impossible without careful planning and the author having a pretty comprehensive vision of it. This broad conceptualition and more concrete scene-building should be in constant "dialogue" with each other - something that I think is very rarely done in VNs and anime, as consistency and logic are quite commonly thrown out of the window for the sake of convenience. And I'm exactly the kind of pedantic reader that gets trigerred by a story that breaks its own rules and kills my immersion. :wafuu:

The only other fan-MLP vn that i remember hearing of is Starswirl Academy.

    2

I'll be writing about that one in the next post. The demo makes it look like a really fun slice-of-life VN, and very much not dependent on its MLP roots. I might be something really cool... If they ever finish it. The curse is real, I tell you. :P

Well, this is something I've always wanted.

But now that I know it exists, I'm too afraid to go ahead with it, given the tone of the original by the end. I wonder why I have such a bias against fanworks when I make fanworks myself.

I have a similar thing. When you're making a fanwork, it's your personal understanding of the original story and characters being expressed. If it's someone else's, or even when the original authors pick up your favourite stories after a long break... You have good reasons to be worried. :nico: Thankfully, I didn't feel this mod ever got the characters or their stories really wrong, or I would be much more harsh towards it. It's more like the overall quality was consistently less than ideal. Which, I guess, is quite normal when dealing with fan work, but that's why I never got into those too much - they can very rarely survive the kind of scrutiny we put professional work through, so unless you're looking for something very specific, like a ship you'd never find in the source material, or there's a very neat idea that catches your attention, there's little point to spending a lot of time with them.

...and this reminded me to finally read that Aoba/Hifumi New Game! fic I've bookmarked like a year ago. :3

    Short VN, how scary.

    I'm more into mid-length VN's.

The devs claim it's 135k words and I think it only offers minor branching, rather than full-on routes, so it's not that short, neither for a single playthrough nor in general. 4-6 hours seems to be an estimate for a fast (or very fast) reader.

    Shallow, choice heavy EVN

It's what I'd call "typical game jam fodder", and I particularly don't hate this one because most of the choices matter in some subtle ways. Would probably be way more critical if the dev asked for money, but as a freebie, it's acceptable. :P

It could have been p decent, but the structural planning was utterly terrible. First of all, it invests you in a character (though not that well, especially with all the "time passes" that are obvious sacrifices to the nanoreno deadline), then decides to play a card that requires you to care about the character it HASN'T invested you in to matter. Then you have to get the same thing but opposite so you don't get the surprise effect and it's again a chore. I really like true ends and I guess I'll forgive the hashtag woke section in it despite it being very obvious, but idk it can't really fix the rest of the VN. I recommend this for EVN devs to study due to its wasted potential and terrible structure, and to nobody else.

Can a second playthrough really be a chore considering the length? It wasn't that badly written at any point. I think the characters were decent, their backstories and different reactions to the threat of *spoiler* adding enough to justify the multiple playthroughs. There were cool touches, like the romance ending suggested how the relationship will forever be tainted by what happened. I'd much more likely complain about the true route and the overly-happy resolution of the plot. :>

I think I recorded like 20 minutes of the game, but it was grating on my voice, and I used a grating voice for the main character, so it'd be enjoyable for no one.

We can't know for sure. :nico:

And what I meant, is that I really like finding playthroughs of obscure VNs and the fact there's only one on your channel... Regrettable. Shameful even. Record more.

If you ever feel like it, that is. No pressure. :<

I was rummaging through some files on my computer and found this from last year:

Sharing it since I can. Have a that.
(Supposedly a video. Might not work. Oh well.)

Yes, yes, I see that my unpronounceable nickname still works perfectly against foreigners of all skill levels and backgrounds. :nico:

The one thing that I find rather disturbing is that the playthrough didn't become a thing. I'll take the playlist with that never-finished OELVN, but that amount of content feels highly inadequate. :notlikemiya:

Great review as always, man ^^

Also, the second pic is not loading for me? Such a shame, the art of this VN is so beautiful.

That screenshot seems to be doing some weird stuff, I've changed the source, so hopefully it will be more cooperative now. :P

And thanks. ^^ I think I was actually a bit overhyped for this one and a bit surprised with how straightforward it turned out to be, but it's still undeniably a lovely little thing. :3

Well, sorry if you feel that way. "Mood" and "tone in speech" are both rather difficult contexts to comprehend in text form, almost impossible even. You can't really judge whether someone's in a foul mood or not from the way he writes.

I remember that I tend to add a lot of emoticons because I was worried that people might think I wasn't joking or was in a bad mood. But then, one of my friends called me out on that and said it was, and I quote, "fucking annoying and makes you look like a retard." Yeah. Needless to say, I didn't speak to him again from then.

    Back on topic.

Well, I was getting that from the substance of what you wrote at least as much as the form. Especially the fragment where you bashed me for going off-topic felt borderline-unpleasant, so I was mostly trying to unload the tension. I most likely failed. ;p

"sell and shove them in where they don't belong." I don't like feeling like I'm being sold a product I never wanted in the first place. If I bought a VN because I expected a good story, I expect that I'm paying for 100% story, not 80% story and 20% fap material that I didn't want. So it does feel annoying that way, like I'm buying an extra hental DLC that I don't want.

Aye, sadly, we might be in minority even among the Western VN fans and if what Dergonu usually says is true, we would definitely be in minority among Japanese eroge fans - there h-scenes are pretty much always an appreciated bonus.

[Redacted] I think my brain got fried today with all the crap I'm working on, probably should stop posting for today... :wafuu:

Thank you so much for these posts.
Some of the better experiences I've had were shorter, more compact or experimental games like these, and yet I still don't put any effort into looking for them. I remain too focused on longer experiences that let me immerse myself in the character interactions for hours. So, thank you for highlighting these!

Really glad you find them useful! ^^

I also really enjoy those small VNs, especially in times like this, when I'm chronically overworked and low on free time. Going to throw this one on the subreddit today, I'm very curious whether anyone wants to hear about free EVNs there. :3
