I found this weird when I first read it, for I'd always been under the impression that Love in Space's titles were exclusive to the west. After checking it out, though, it appears Liberation Day has a Japanese version. Mask of Arcadius seems to have something in Japanese too, I think, but I don't believe any other of their products are available in Japanese, including Starnova.

Liberation Day was released in Japan along with Mark of Arcadius, as a single package. When I wrote this, admittedly some time ago, I was under the impression that the extreme weebness of SSS was once more a way to turn it into an export product on a later date, but I guess their approach is more about pandering to actual weebs with the over-the-top Japanese stylization. Maybe I was giving them more credit then they deserved in this respect, but I wouldn't be that surprised to see the JP version pop up at some point. :>

Plus, if we count these three, the only "other Love in Space game" left is the Academy which clearly has little capability to thrive on the JP dating sim market, especially with the original Sunrider getting little recognition there.

Oh yeah Sakura Sadist, that game I was supposed to make a guide for like I did with other WC games...

Anyway great post, it is very amusing to see your thoughts on WC considering you're a fan of GxG (Which I'm too, but, it is kind of turn off to me when Female characters are written as perverted males, like the did with the female option in Wolf Tails).

Yeah, fannily enough, I consider writing on female leads in Sakura games not so terrible. Obviously, they're not "serious" yurige, trying to emulate female perspective, but they also don't give me that "a guy wrote that" feeling 100% of the time. Plus, as I wrote in the previous post, at least the yuri stuff have proper protagonists. Male leads in WC games are pretty much the blandest self-iserts possible, with female ones they at least have to try to make them appealing. ;]

Thus, the fundamental superiority of yuri over all other kinds of VNs have been scientifically proven. :mare:

Hmm... Unfortunately I wasn't able to play any of the Sakura games/VN?  However from what I gathered from the reviews, it seems pretty... mediocre?:leecher:

So is this worth playing or better skip this VN and look for something better? :vanilla:

Depends on what you're looking for. If it's anime boobs or even straight-up hentai, those are admittedly of consistently nice quality (both character artists that work for Winged Cloud are quite talented). If you're looking for a story, or at least something well written... Some Sakura games, like Dungeon, Fantasy or Nova have their moments, but they're generally shit when it goes to storytelling. And most of them don't even pretend to have a plot, they're just loose collections of fanservice/porn CGs. :P

So, in short, most of them look nice, but saying they're mediocre is being generous. You can try Sakura Dungeon (nicely-crafted dungeon crawler), Sakura Fantasy, Sakura Nova (cool sci-fi/fantasy aesthetic and lovely heroines) or Sakura Santa (no hentai, just a rather cute, dumb ecchi VN) if you want a VN you can burn a few hours with without straining your brain, but they're generally something to be avoided.

I'm still peeved at the whole Sakura Fantasy thing because I was genuinely interested in how the series chapters progressed, but nah let's just permanently leave it in an unfinished state so we can work on Sakura Ditch Digging

Of course, after all, Sakura Ditch Digging needs 30% less fanservice CGs (fewer characters, no optional scenes beyond alternative endings), no event CGs beyond porn and we'll just need 2 backgrounds beyond the ditch one and the generic field one. It will sell a similar amount of copies, as 60% of our fanbase don't even bother to read the stuff and just skip to the h-scenes. Why make an effort, when you can feed literal crap to people and they're still asking for more? :mare:

Still a better game than Loren The Amazon and other half bake EVN VN hybrids:sacchan:

haven't finished the game yet however I did had fun playing it!

Hope to see a sequel soon enough XD:mare:

Also this game is now available in GOG.COM!

Please also advertise the GOG.COM page as well! :Chocola:

    Steam Sucks balls anyways! :wahaha:

I'm not sure if this one will ever get a sequel... And if it does, I REALLY hope it will start from the DLC scenario, not the main campaign ending. Seriously, f*** that ending. :wafuu:

And yeah, when I wrote this VNs on GoG weren't a thing yet, I will add it now. ^^

    ----

And Loren isn't all bad, it's a good VN, just a really poor RPG. Later WinterWolves' games are much better in this respect. :P

  6. I'm not sure why you claim that this problem is especially important in VNs, numerical scores are always deeply flawed - they're, however, quite convenient and can be still useful if you make clear how you use them and keep some levels of consistency. They may reflect something very specific (your level of enjoyment with the game) or many things at once (many people on the Forums described their elaborate systems of rating VNs, with various amount of points attached to different aspects of them) - the real problem is that people both treat them way too seriously and compare them in ways that are grossly misleading. I think you could easily replace those basic ratings you've laid out with numbers without losing much of their meaning, the argumentation you add to your reviews and the additional tags that explain what kind of enjoyment these games might offer and who they're targeted towards are much more important.

EDIT: Also, I wonder, would that second category be closer to "Deeply flawed"? I know it doesn't sound as good, but I think "imperfect" is too mild of a term to communicate a game being one tier above pure trash. ;)

  7. I guess the trope is just as well and alive in the Western media, but I wonder if it doesn't still have a bit to do with Japanese culture - there praying on others and being an outcast from the society, who can't live by the same rules as everyone else could be a slightly bigger deal than it would be from American/European perspective. Plus, concealing your true identity and knowing that everyone else considers you an abomination is not a minor thing - some people could accept it without much of a problem (ex. sociopaths such as me ), for others it would be a constant torture. It also depends whether there's some kind of Vampire community they can rely on or if they're, as you've mentioned, feeling isolated and vulnerable.

You wrote once that it's also very rare for a VN protagonist to become a non-human on his own volition... But now that I think about it, it's also a thing in Western media? Trying to transcend humanity is usually the villain's path, while the hero clings to it with everything they have. Still, I find the dedication to "normalcy" as an automatically positive value very Japanese.

The "violent urges" part is more important than you made it seem though, in most mythos vampire's thirst is something that has to be always kept in check and can turn you into a mindless beast if not taken care of properly. A Vampire in this sense is akin to a drug addict, who constantly struggles to keep any semblance of normalcy and stability in his life and know that failing will probably cost him his life. Plus, depending on the setting, there might be a danger of even losing your human form and the ability to mingle with the human society.

But TBH, I've seen very few depictions of vampires where becoming one didn't seem like a pretty good deal from my perspective. Not sure what this says about me. :P

  8. Huh, I wonder how many eroge have centaur h-scenes like this one, I'm starting to see a pattern here... :wafuu:

I don't know about the h-content, but that artstyle is pretty amazing. I think I will remember this one, for the possibility I actually get far enough with my Japanese learning to read it one day.

Great review BTW, so much detail... :)

Actually, this announcement is very similar to one I did.

Hah, this makes sense. I guess I can at least be happy that moderation isn't driving me from the site so far, even if the moderation debates lately got me a bit panicked. And censorship is a bit of a non-issue in OELVNs, at least as long as Steam don't go on a rampage again. :]

BTW, you use Blogger, right? Weren't you worried about Google cracking down on loli content? In the way they handle YouTube, you can expect drastic shifts in policy and PR-related content purges from them too.

you just gave the yuri ones golden poo.....

    22 minutes ago, bakauchuujin said:

Would be fun to see how the rankings would be if you had gone through all the Sakura VNs. Would expect golden poo for all yuri and smelly poo for all that has a male MC.

I actually have more Winged Cloud-themed episodes ready (I plan to cover them all eventually) and I wanted to ensure you both that while the theme is not without its significance (for an actual reason - yuri Sakura games sometimes have protagonists that aren't just the hollowest, blandest self-inserts possible), it's not really that important - it's just that the free straight ones were particularly crappy, with no entertainment value whatsoever (beyond the porn itself, of course). :P

Edit: Also the next episode will be pretty much all about shitting on yuri games, so the bias is not that strong, I mostly joked about it here. :P

You don't sound like you played it.

All what OP said about the story makes it sound like there is more than "fockmadauda: the game"
I might not like lolige or incest, but from expericne I can say that this might really be legit. Why don't you try it yourself? If it is a good game and OP was right, you played a good game, if it really sucks, well, now you have proof.

Giving it way more benefit of the doubt that it deserves, it's still a violent/messed up loli nukige made by a company doing solely violent/messed up loli nukiges. Any kind of good writing exploring pedophilia or incest (because, if you look closely, that's all that the OP's claims point to, a romanticized vision of pedophilic relationship between a father and his [teen? Pre-teen?] daughter) will just be a flavour on top of tons of the pedo porn. I would not touch this for a million dollars and I'm ok with the 0,2% chance that I'm missing on something of value that way.

  12. 12 minutes ago, Akshay said:

I can see why people avoid it.

Yeah, the game is a pure loli incest nukige. I'd be suprised if there was anything actually interesting about it.

This review, on the other hand, might just be the troll post of the century. I've seen people discussing this game on Discord and claiming they'll try it out, like if it was some kind of legitimate topic.

GG Ramaladni, you confused the shit out of pretty much everyone around here.

This was a good review maybe I should play one of the Sunrider games at some point. It sounds like you are hungering for some Galaxy Angel though.:maple:

Thank you! :) Yeah, I think it's mostly my laziness preventing me from playing Galaxy Angel already, I never used fan translations and it seems like a bother to set things up for it when I already have 2-3 dozens of VNs ready to play on my PC. :P

But I really don't understand why the whole series isn't licensed yet, I think it would sell like hotcakes on Steam.

I think you put this in the con list by mistake. This is clearly meant to be in the pro list! (/ω\)

I would argue that even fanservice is susceptible to diminishing returns when it jumps at you at every turn... :vinty:

Maybe unless you play the game in short bursts, without ever letting its barrage of samey-looking boobs and porn scenes to become tedious. In that case, it probably has an exceptionally high fap/dollar ratio. For me personally, even if I ever looked for fap material in VNs, Wanaca's art wouldn't be my first choice. ;p

To answer your question from earlier in the comment thread - only a demo was released for NaNoRenO. However, if I remember right this was always the intention of the devs, so it wasn't so much that they bit off more than they could chew and were forced to downsize, just that they used NaNo as their starting point.

Yup, that makes sense, but it was hard for me to verify it (and I only recently realized how often people do that, preparing all kinds of teasers and demos for NaNo rather than full games). Thanks for the info. :) I guess I'll have to redact the post to make it factually correct. One day... :vinty:

I agree that all of these are great VNs, and the developers all deserve to be on it, but I would have preferred a little bit more variety, especially for such a short list. It's a little harder to get away with being on the list twice when there are only 5 spots. Loan Wolf by Rumblebee, and Plain by Fablesoft, for example, are two that I personally enjoyed and think could have potentially competed with the others on this list for a spot. Some others that I haven't played myself but have heard good things about are Blossoms Bloom Brightest, Girl Crush, and Love on the Peacock Express.

Well, you're right in a way, although even now, when I've played more YGJ games than when I wrote this post I still think there's little that compares ebi-hime's and Nami's work when it goes to overall quality. I also come from the idea that I can always write another list if I find more games and developers worth recommending - I try to pick them carefully because JP VN fans (that are the main audience here on Fuwa) are used to really high quality, high-budget VNs, so they might not survive the cultural shock when approaching some of the indie stuff. ;)
