You sure like to give us POLISHed reviews. :mare:

Pun aside, Magic Otoge been on my never-ending Backlog for a while, so It is always Nice to know more about games I want to play one day.

Heh, that's a randomly accurate pun for a review that somehow never wanted to turn out readable and went through an unreasonable number of edits, which, as it always is with over-edited things, only partially helped with anything. ;p For the games themselves, they are really nice when you need something chill and fluffy. And the author seems to be improving with every game, so I'm actually quite interested in how the newest part turns out. :)

    Good review!

I'm halfway through Ciel at the moment, but the one I was really interested was Anholly. Good to know that one improved over the first!

    And yeah, Yvin best boy!

Oh, and I managed to butcher Yvin's name in the weirdest possible way... Really, this post just didn't like me. :wafuu: Well, still thank you and I'm glad you enjoyed it! At least with next week's review, I'm very satisfied with how it turned out and it will be something quite unusual. :3

You are so fantastic. I really look forward to them.

I read a lot on most days--always soaking up information--but knowing who you are specifically, and having this back/forth interaction with you makes these reviews so much more enjoyable.

    You are a complete pleasure!

I know you're super busy, but when you get a chance, I would love if you'd set up a really simple Patreon page or something for the blog; just for people who want to offer a little bit of love and support for what you're doing.

I would be really happy to make a small donation and be your very first Patron! <3

Wow, I don't think I'm anywhere close to a level that would justify donations, but I might think about it one day. For now, I would rather encourage people to donate to Fuwa, after all, this site is why I have a convienient platform to work on and an audience that is really interested in the topic. Seeing it thrive is something I very much care about. :3

I'm thankful for your feedback and compliments though, this indeed wouldn't be half as interesting without actual discussions with people and knowing that my writing can be fun to read and make others curious about the games and topics I touch on. ;)

Thanks for placing this VN on my radar! Looks very interesting. I like short VNs for not wasting so much time and getting to the point. So I will definitely give it a shot when I'm in the mood for something really dark. I don't know why, but you description of this VN is giving me some slight Saya no Uta vibes.

There is some resemblence, even in visual department I think, although not that deep, it's still a slightly different brand of horror. I think it might be to your liking though, if you're looking for something fresh and with a western feel to it. :)

Also, you can always show your appreciation through a like! ;p

Wow, I'm super impressed with both the review and the game. It was created in roughly a month?

I couldn't really verify what version of the game was submitted to NaNoRenO, but it was definitely an entry, so the one-month rule should apply. I might reach to Fervent at some point and ask them directly, maybe when I get to reviewing Who is Mike

I'm watching a let's play at the moment to get a feel for it. Maybe I can find some time to play it in the new future.

    Thanks again, love!

All pleasure is mine (like, literally, I really like writing these). ;)

Not really, since the VNDB length normally counts all routes (if you would apply the single-play logic F/SN would be a 10-30h game, since the fate route takes around 24h).

Yeah, I mean, I know you're right, it's just that people seem to do that often, I'm a pretty slow reader but I'm quite sure I've seen many titles that had heavily underestimated playtimes and I rarely remember to actually go to VNDB page and correct that. :P

YEAH ONE MORE 2 MY GIANT BACKLOG, ALSO IT IS MRM (Multiple Route Mystery) VN SO, YESSSSSS!!!

Noice review, it is nice to see ya' getting along with Otoges. VNDB states that the game is a 2-10h experience, so that is curious...

The only disappointment here is that you can't date the bear. ;_; THAT IS BEARPHOBIA!!!

I think VNDB length is often set as the time you need for a single playthrough, rather than how long it'll take you to 100% the game. So it is 5-6 hours to get to your first ending but the route variation is pretty significant. :]

And yeah, I very much like the more casual/tame storytelling that most otome games offer. I don't enjoy the romance itself as much as I do with yuri, but everything I've read for the "Otome Month" posts was very much enjoyable. I like using the blog to force some more diversity into my reading schedule BTW, it makes things more interesting. ;)

EDIT: BTW minor typo on the phrase "Diversity of the cast and possible romance options is definitely one of the game’s selling points – thankfully, all of the characters are solidand there’s no obvious agenda present in the storytelling (no, the bear is not romanceable)" "solid" and "and" should be separated, sorry for the whining.  xoI

Thank you, I'll always leave a few of those between edits, so pointing that out is helping rather than whining. :P

  6. This one is still waiting on my to-read quoue after I've got through the prologue, but I've heard so many good things about it I really want to leave it for a moment when I'll have some free time and possibility to enjoy it to the fullest. :]

Great review, there's just one thing I will diasgree with and that is the "yuritopia" of many Japanese VNs, in which everyone's gay by default and nothing has to be elaborated upon. No social stigma, no uncertainty. I mean, it's so far from any imaginable RL situations that it takes me out of the experience a little bit. But I guess it's part of the formula, just like BL traditionally didn't deal with gay identity in any tangible ways. I think it's changing though? @MaggieROBOT

Any discussion is welcome! ;)  But yeah, I also love the ones that can sing too! But with male actors (maybe with female ones too, but I don't remember a whole lot of them, easy to imagine why XD) there's some problems that... I think sometimes they edit too much their voices for them to appear younger and more "ikemen-like" if that makes sense. Let the dudes be more natural, I surely love when they sound more mature! Most of my favorites are beyond 30s or even 40s, they don't need to sound like teenagers...

Oooohhh, I think it's a huge issue with all seiyuus - it's hard to express how happy I am when the female cast sounds like actual human beings in a JP VN or anime series. :P This goes to singing too, you can just contrast Kana Hanazawa singing with a somewhat natural voice and Kana Hanazawa impersonating a mouse. With all respect to all those liking Renai Circulation, I definitely prefer VAs not overdoing stuff. :D

  8. I know it's slightly beside the point, but it's also mentioned in a way when it comes to character CDs...

I'm always amazed by how many seiyuus are also competent singers. I don't get obsessed with voice actors (well, especially male ones, it's easy to imagine why), but a voice actress that's good at her main job and sings well will usually get me (moderately) excited. I guess I have a thing for people with multiple talents, probably because of how much I lack any artistic abilities whatsoever... :P

WHY IS THE TEXT OVERRIDING THE HEART ICON

    TmQ8sto.gif

I'm sorry I'm the one to tell you that... But... The Heart is not actually an icon. It's just a background element.

I know things will never be the same now that you've learned the truth, but I hope you'll find the strength to forgive the Heart, and maybe even love it again one day. It never wanted to hurt you.

Definitively reading this befote Cinderella Phenomenon, it reminds me of the Three bears story (the one of the beds and soups), and I'll get all endings and Make a guide for it as always. :o)

The guide would be useful, because the official one on the developer's site doesn't always work - at least in one route, it skipped a choice that I think mattered after all, because I've got normal end after following the instructions to the letter. Lost any motivation to try again after that. :P

Most people simply don't have the ability to construct coherent sentences while bringing text over from another language

I guess there's also a problem of some translators being native speakers in neither English nor Japanese? From what I understand, a0art from lack of proper editorial oversight, that's where the Hoshimemo disaster came from - the lead translator was German. And I think it would be the same if I've attempted translating anything, even if we assume I'm a fairly competent writer (disputable) and know both languages somewhat well (not yet true), there's just a ton of nuance that would escape me, metaphors that would get over my head and many situations in which I would create sentences that seem logical from my point of view but for a native speaker looks horrible.

    Tanslating is scary business... :amane:

I liked the original "Carpe diem". The gimmick seemed interesting to me, it was like a very mini-mini-MINI DDLC-before-DDLC. Though DDLC has had a much bigger impact, obviously, as the gimmick is better.

Funny thing, I played both Carpe diem and DDLC almost on release.

Yeah, the gimmick was promising - and made the ultimate failure of Reboot that much more painful to see. It reminds you that having a good idea is a start, not a success in itself. :>

Hey, thanks for the input! I really... struggled with this word while writing, should I use, should I not? Like I said, I never saw a manga that with huge age gaps in yuri, so I didn't even have an example to check. I have limited knowledge in the field, so if you think it was inappropriate, please do tell me!

Well, I simply think this term is used in a way that makes it lose any real meaning - it's better to simply avoid it unless for really clear-cut cases (that is, when you have an erotic plot with an adult and a pre-puberty child, like this SonoHana game for example). A romance between an adult and an older teenager might be "illegal" by our standards but doesn't have to appeal to pedophiles or be targeted towards them. And not every case of child rape or child molestation is connected to pedophilia whatsoever. So, when you use this term for broad generalizations, you'll more likely than not miss the point - it's not criticism, as I see it done everywhere and it's hard to really see through the misconception unless you deal with the topic in some more or less systematic ways (as both my master's thesis and my PhD project are primarily in porn studies, the discussion about pedophilia and child porn is something I've gone through dozens of times).
