I am genuinely hyped. It's actually quite strange, considering how much content I am bound to skip.

I feel exactly the same. What I've heard about the Law Route is pretty much my "storytelling fetish" - I enjoy that kind of "lawful villain/subverting the expectations" fantasies to an unreasonable degree and it is very rarely done in western games... I'm not sure if I've seen a compelling version of it outside of Star Wars: The Old Republic and that game's Sith storylines (I accept recommendations though :p). :Chocola:

Plus, if I'm planning to avoid the Chaos route altogether I don't think I have to worry about the censorship that much. I might still download the patch to see the consensual h-scenes (lol, how the contrast with tentacle rape can make those seem like a completely innocent/appealing concept :wahaha:), but either way there's much less risk of the narrative falling apart than if playing the tentacle rape path without tentacle rape...

BTW, thank you once more @assasinzassasin for talking to us, you did a great job explaining the difficulties of this particular localization process and answering all our questions. I will try to promote your crowdfunding in whatever way I can - and I hope we didn't get you in really heavy trouble for revealing all that stuff. ^^

On the first pharagraph I Think you meant "Interative" and not "Iterative".

For a moment I've got scared that my whole life was a lie and I've been misspelling or misusing a very important word, but thankfully I did mean iterative there. The grammar was messy though, I hope the sentence makes more sense now. ;)

And yeah, I've seen some otome games with decent yuri routes, but probably not a real hybrid. Because this game is not a hybrid, it's just the Generic Romance VN incarnate, just with a (poorly done) female, bisexual lead.

Has there ever been a sports-centered VN that was actually good?

Little Busters I guess? You can argue whether it's really about sports, but here the use of the theme is super-shallow too. :P

And there's actually another volleyball OELVN on Kickstarter now, don't have time to look up the title now, but I wonder whether the curse will hold or that new one will be decent after all. ;p

My biggest regret with this game is, perhaps, that most plotpoints go nowhere. Spoilers follow.

      Reveal hidden contents

In a way, it is fitting. The end conclusion to the situation was the two of them running away from it all.

However, I am a person who wants things to turn out well. I wanted Constance to find the help she seeks, or for the two older maids to get their just desserts. Alas, the very realism of the plot up till that point would not help in giving me my desired good ending.

Yeah, these were exactly my feelings too...

    Spoiler

I mean, I guess things like Constance being cruel and vindictive towards Lorina till the very end made sense (although making us empathise with her during the piano scene should count as reader abuse at this point), just like the main couple just running away and leaving everything else without proper conclusion, but that doesn't change how unsatisfying some of these developments were. If I finish my VN with feelings of frustration and slight disgusts and it wasn't explicitly its purpose, I will count that as a negative no matter how much sense the conclusion makes within the setting.

Ok, so I have played the entire game(free version) and really enjoyed it. I am planning to read the seuquel, wishing not to be disappointed by it. But I have one problem; I tried to go for the K's route, but some how got C's ending. Can anyone please tell me how to get all the endings? Thank you!

I would just recommend buying the pro version, it unlocks all the endings by default. ;) It's also possible that you can just replay chapters and farm decision points that way. You just need a certain number of k-aligned choices to unlock her ending, I couldn't find a detailed walkthrough anywhere, but I think when I finished the game I would have both K and C endings available to me (with pro version, I could see them all regardless), so I don't think you need a huge number of them.

With the sequel... Well, it's not bad, but completely linear and finishes with another cliffhanger, this time with no hope for continuation as far as I know. It's not a complete led-down, but very much optional IMO, the first game ends on a much more satisfying note.

    Thank you for the recommendations!

Aside from Taarradhin, I think the rest of yuri OELVN tend to go with simplistic style, huh? Clearly it's a far cry from Japan's sometimes overly sexualized depiction of this genre.

Some of them have been downloaded and I'm looking forward to play them. I've also played SilverHyena's Mira's Magical Mishap (kind of a fan for their easy-in-the-eyes sprites ever since their first game).

And I'm looking forward to another witch themed VN Escape from the Princess, which kind of bordering on Japan's take on yuri.

The simple style might be the case with free yuri OELVNs (although ones by Ebi-Hime are definitely exceptions), but not necessarily to all of them. It's s bit different with commercial titles, there's a fair share of those with high production qualities and pretty heavy sexual content. The games made for jams often explicitely distance themselves from the Japanese formula and oversexualizing yuri romance, but when you want to sell something to broader audience, few things sell quite like fanservice and hentai. ;]

  7. Oh, hey, this is still much better than I've expected. I really imagined the JP VN industry to be a complete sausagefest apart from a female artist now and then breaking the combo. :> I wonder if there's a correlation between those damsel-in-distress protagonists Clephas despises and writing team being male, or the social expectation are so pervasive that even women write such atrocities into existence. ;]

  8. The horror theme was really sweet, great job @Clephas. :) Edit: Though, wait, did Clephas write this or was he just the theme/inspiration this time around? I somehow assumed the former. The compliment stands either way.  :P

And I guess I should congratulate the victors on surviving the PvE encounters! Not as glorious as some battles of the past, but still, few saw the true nature of Fuwa's final boss and lived to tell the tale. :nico:

The one major problem I had with this game is that there are too many times when characters would just cold show up out of nowhere. It happened at least four times.

Well, you have to keep the drama going somehow. ;) You're definitely right but I didn't notice it that much when playing, so I don't think it's the worst offender in the "overly convenient plot devices" category. :)

And well, I keep it to one review per week, so even my favourites have to wait sometimes. ;)

It still baffles me that this was made by the same people that developed Happy Campers...

But again, great review as always! I wish I could it right now, but it is a bit pricey on steam (on my country) and my backlog is giant. :vinty:

I think that in a weird, paradoxical way, the fact that Happy Campers was made basically by the same team is exactly what made it that bad. If it was made by Winged Cloud or NewWestGames (my go-to examples of no-talent studios, at least in writing department), it would be just consistently shallow and fanservicy, and you would just sum it with a sigh and forget about it a few days later. The contrast between the rather well-written and occasionally deep subplot between the other two girls and all the horrible "comedy" and fanservice is what really makes it dreadful. You feel that someone with talent made it and that thought, contrasted with realities of the game, makes it incomprehensible. :wahaha:

Hey, what a cool post!! ^.^ I hope you get more opportunities to do interviews, it was such a good read!

I agree with a lot of things that the developer said. When it comes to more obscure OELVN titles aimed for girls, when I see like 10 votes in VNDB I think "wow, a lot of people liked it, must be worth to check it out"! I do my part, but I wanted to see more feedback in VNDB honestly. And yeah, we already have enough games with chaste and innocent girls, keep being original!!

And about the game, it seems like something I could enjoy, but I'll wait for possible future chapters. I prefer to read the entire story in one go. Like you said in the review, it's very hard to rate it otherwise.

Cheers to Jackie M. too, and good luck with your VN!

Thank you! I have one more interview more or less ready to publish and I hope to make another one during April. It takes time, as I like to know that devs library well before I approach them, it makes it much easier to make the conversation meaningful. :) Hopefully, I will do a good job of cycling between differently-profiled devs and keeping things fresh. ;)

Hahahaha, funny you said that when I didn't even mention the best part of it: they run some brothels, but there's not a single female prostitute in them, only guys and crossdressers. Gotta love these ideas!

Oh wow. :D I think I should push this game to some gender studies people on my university, they would have some fun with this kind of super-masculine/harsh gay world. I would do something about it myself if I had the time. ^^

Fun trivia: this game is the source of my blog's header.

In the header, from left to right: Luca, Kiryu, Toudou, Tachibana, JJ, Azusa, Ugajin and Liu.

By "source" you mean it's a fanart of that game, or those chibis were actually in it? :o

Once more a great review. Also, I find the idea of randomly all-gay mafia even more amusing than an all-gay catholic boarding school. VN settings FTW! :D

I'll have to give it a try one of these days I need a palate cleanser after the horror that I went through. I've always been of the mind that if there must be sex in a vn the very least it could be is romantic and well enough written. It's a nice change of pace for that to actually happen.

Oh, yeah, it should be a perfect therapy after reading Creature Romance. I have to admit, that kiss CG haunts me just after seeing it in your post, I don't think I'd be strong enough to play through the whole thing - though maybe that mention of alcohol explains it? :o

Anyways... I'm definitely in the same camp and OELVN scene is pretty interesting in this regard. There's quite a few creators that try to escape porn tropes when approaching sexual themes - whether they succeed in creating something worthwhile is a whole another topic though. ;p
