Playing Sono Hikari Sono Tsubasa ~Azathoth no Isan~, a doujin game I learned of from clicking on one of the random pictures that show up on the front page.

For a doujin game, the art and vfx are pretty detailed, this game seems to haven gotten a lot of love.

Speaking of the love, characters are all very caring of each other, which is one of my favourite character cast relations. They also turned that in to comedy in places. Of the first three characters we see after the prologue, the first is a extremely well-mannered girl who still manages to be 天然, a total goofball, and lastly we have the poor misunderstood shota who looks like a girl (He's the protag btw). The bgm is only normal quality, but is very calming and soothing along with the scenes. There's also sense of wonder towards the fantastical objects in the novel. Sono Hikari has really drawn me in and made me forget about judging the VN. There's some exposition and the story has some sci-fi elements lying around in the background, but man, the characters sometimes. They're so adorable it should be illegal. Squee~

Currently reading Konata yori Kanata made.

It has definitely been exceeding my expectations in many ways. I don't know how I have managed to stay composed for as long as I have while reading this, but when I finally do break... I am probably going to cry like nothing else. Sadness aside, the characterization is done pretty well, and I have been particularly been enjoying Christel's antics. Yuu is also a qt3.14... so yeah. xD

Oh, and I am somewhere in Christel's route as of right now. Now that I am done work I can finally dedicate more time to reading.

I finished Kusarihime. At least I read the true end.

I'm really not sure of what I just read. The plot is very hard to follow: every time you (think that you) start grasping what's going on, a new element is introduced or the pattern you found is broken and everything becomes even more confusing. I'm frankly not quite sure how to fit some of the pieces of the puzzle if I am to take the events and explanations in the ending at face value, but at the same time there doesn't seem to be that much room for interpretation...
As in something like Forest, Meteor's plot in on the verge of being incomprehensible but maintains just enough to let you have a general feel of understanding, which makes the reading very engaging since you have to always be attentive. The writing itself is pretty neat too, it has some flavor yet remains simple enough, which helps.

I guess re-reading the game to get the parts I'm still missing should help making sense out of everything.

It's a pretty thrilling experience overall, the game is very atmospheric with some pretty incredible scenes and all throughout a varied panel of emotions being displayed. It's also well-paced despite its . I'm satisfied with what I read. This is definitely the kind of work I need to let sink in to get a better appreciation of, though.

I also randomly finished Eris' chapter in Eustia >.>
The contribution to the overarching plot was cool but Eris' story was a bunch of bullcrap and it was seriously a pain to go through some of that. I'm a bit hesitant now on whether I should continue that or start reading KnS 2...

Just finished my first big untranslated visual novel, Astraythem! With my vocabulary of ~2000 kanji and ~3000 words it took me about 6 days of focused reading. What is this feeling of accomplishment?

Loved it while playing, but grew to hate some parts of it more and more towards the end (see spoiler rant).  If you've played it, I'd love to hear your thoughts on this game.

The following is a list of both series and standalone japanese role-playing games. These are some of the best jrpgs or more interesting ones to come out since the inception. These are mainly titles people consider to be good from people who have played the games. To keep it easy if there is a game with a series of titles I will just put the main series and under it have a spoiler for the games that are within it. If a game is a series and the sequels must be played in a certain order I will mention it.

For what it's worth, since I'm probably twice the age of the average punter on this forum, I don't have a problem with you guys pirating while you can't afford the stuff, provided as your earning capacity grows you slowly move towards the group that pays for most things (that are worth it). All those visual novels you've loved and spent thousands of hours fapping to reading wouldn't exist without some kind of recompense on the creators' part. I think most business models are rather old fashioned and haven't realised that there really is no way the lower end of the age bracket, which is the bulk of the market, can afford the prices they offer things at. Much more affordable digital distribution is the key in my opinion with boxes, packaging, DVDs, extras and so on being for those who want the extra and are willing to pay the price premium. The other alternative is people will just pirate the digital version instead. In my opinion it's only a matter of time before something like steam - but not steam, so that we actually get uncensored 18+ material - will fill that niche. Maybe I should start a business...

A Take on Pornography: Effects of Lewd Content in 2D Animation and Visual Novels

Possible topic questions for this episode include:
Ignoring personal morals and the law, why do you believe it is more acceptable to discuss 2D pornographic preferences rather than real ones in real life? Porn plays a large part in the VN and animated industry (specifically from Japan). Do you think it is something we should avoid discussing, or do you feel that given the content it is only natural? If you are somebody that supports the discussion of porn with others, why do you feel comfortable doing so? If you are somebody that does not support discussion of porn with others, why do you feel uncomfortable doing so? It is said that sex sells. What do you think of this statement? Do you believe the VN industry has shifted a lot of its initial story based audience to a more sex desiring audience as time has gone on (i.e. = comparing 1990 to 2013)? If so, why do you think this? If you think VNs have always been the same, what changes (if any) have you noticed? Gender plays a large role in how comfortable sex discussions are, be it 2D or real life. Imagining that the content of porn being discussed caters to a gender's needs (i.e. = female eye candy vs. male eye candy), why do you think gender plays a role in how porn discussions play out in 2D animation? Given the future of VNs, do you think more or less porn will be implemented into the genre? If more, why? If less, what change do you think will spark this? If you believe that they will generally stay the same, what is a change that you would like to see?

Chronopolis got a reaction from Zalor in VNs that start with a Bang (aka they get right to the point)
I haven't played that many VN's. If you filter out the games that are too hard, and you take out the slice of life heavy games, you get novels which are all over the place and different. The following games I recommend aren't masterpieces or even great. They're all decent though, I enjoyed them all.

-Midori no umi. The common route is not that long, and there are lots of branches with some interesting minor ends. (mystery, atmospheric charage).
-Houkago no Futekikakusha. There's basically no normal slice of life and the story starts quickly. There is some later on but it's pretty much part of the plot. Quite an emotionally powerful game, but might come off as repetitive or clumsy as a story. (utsug-ish, lots of character hurt and suffering due to adverse situations)

Both of the following two are old games and have abbreviated common routes.
-Konata yori Kanata Made (utsuge. There's supernatural but the novel isn't totally not about that and completely about the emotions and thoughts.)
-Kizuato  (suspense, thriller, supernatural. It in a few ways inspired Tsukihime and the VN genre. It's kinda got archtype not-that-deep (but still very likable) characters, but the story is totally respectable in itself. Play the remake version.)

If you want to challenge yourself, I'd recommend Aiyoku, overall it's both higher quality and more widely appealing than all of the games listed above. Sure, each chapter takes time to build up, but it's well presented (Characters are fantastic) and the atmosphere of the world just sucks you in.

Another recommendation if you want to challenge yourself is Giniro. It's a non-conventional story, a set of 5 seperate stories which kind of connect thematically with the theme of the "Silver Thread". It's the most utsuge ever. I really reccomend the first story, as it's got some poetic and artistic style to it as well as being very memorable. You could read just the first story and be fine with that. It's also easier than some of the later chapters to read, because it's a relatively minimal story.

Hmm...Indeed the first two chapters of IMZ were good (still stalled on chapter 5 though). But IMZ is harder than average to read, and is veeerrry text heavy, and not suitable for a novice.

Chronopolis reacted to Deep Blue in Learning Japanese - Useful resources
This might sound obvious but I think you need to study until the point where you see something in a sentence and you can identify it, for example seeing a particle and know why is there, same with an adverb or adjectives, is the verb in a て form, what does it mean?why is a だから/から there and so on.
The thing is when you are learning grammar if you don't know at least some vocab you will get very frustrated, for example if you are learning the も particle and you see this:
peterは遊ぶ彼女もする, it looks very pretty and all but if you dont know what hell 遊ぶ or 彼女 then you are learning nothing...so you need some basic vocab to learn the grammar, so you should at least learn the vocab from jlpt5 to use the tae kim's guide (I think he uses the vocab from jlpt5 and nothing more, leaving aside the verbs)

    I haven't seen the japanese.

I didn't how Moogy's translation introduces new statements/concepts that aren't in the original prose. Though the idea of having prose in a translation is not a bad one. Many TL'ers don't really read a lot of novels in english, so they aren't used to reading prosy English. I still probably will stop to reread prosy Japanese and prosy English, but only with the English I'd react "wtf is this stuff", just because I'm not used to having to decipher English prose. Even though I falter at seeing prose, it's moogy's liberalness, rather than roundaboutness that I disagree with.

Anyways, the translation seem alright. There are some things that don't really work in English, what I mean by that, is that the English doesn't deliver a satisfactory impact, or the focus is on a weird place.

The hubbub of my classmates, whose names I couldn't even all remember — it had only been a month — felt so peaceful I was jealous.

Noontime here in this paradise was so tranquil. It seemed to deny the very existence of the place I had just come from, those blood-soaked fields where men had fought and died.

I haven't checked the Japanese but it seems fine. Anyways, a good editor could take this and fix up all the small English weird things and restructure some of the English sentences. The result will be pretty fine, as in there's pretty few people who can do better. If said editor can write, that's even better.

It looks like Navel made easy demands on MG, if they want the partnership, they'll need to release titles from the oldest to the newest, that's how it looks atleast. So, what do you guys think, will we be getting best Navel's games anytime soon? It wasn't annouced at AX or Otakon which is pretty strange and disturbing.

Chronopolis reacted to Nosebleed in The First Yuri Otomege
Aimed at females means aimed at females, it doesn't imply sexual preference, though needless to say even without implying it, gay women are more likely to be interested in it than straight women.
A game aimed at females will obviously be written differently than a game aimed at males because men and women look for different things when reading a story, in particular a dating game.

For exmple, on the other side of the spectrum you have the difference between yaoi and bara.
The first primarly depicts beautiful and idealistic males in more efeminate ways, and those games target not only gay men but also your run of the mill fujoshi.
Bara on the other hand depicts gay men as, well, strong independent men overflowing with testosterone, and the primary target are actual gay men who aren't interested in the whole "pretty boy" type of deal that yaoi usually provides.

Different people like different things, if this yuri game is actually aimed at females, I am expecting something outside of the usual moe character tropes.
Yuri games aimed at males are very cutesy and charming, they depict idealistic relationships between women which are not at all representative of how relationships go, but that doesn't matter because the target audience is mostly interested in all the moe and not so much the character depth aspect.
So yeah, I am pretty intrigued by this and hope it brings something fresh to the table.

Spoiler rule: Until August 15, I ask that all spoilers be kept to the spoiler box.  On August 15, you may begin to converse normally including spoilers.  This also exists as a warning to those who haven't started the VN yet, so they don't get spoiled by reading too far into the thread.

Chronopolis reacted to kyrt in The Unseen Websites of JAST USA
JAST USA does not exactly have the best marketing strategies in place but that is possibly do to not wanting overexposure. It's hard to really know what a company is thinking when they are creating material to try and help sell a product but JAST is probably one of the few places that actually bothers to create material and just doesn't say anything about it. The following is a compilation of as many JAST USA officially made websites that I was able to find both to share with you as well as discuss a bit more in depth. Honestly some of these you might actually be surprised exist in the first place; I will be updating this first post whenever a new website is created and if I happened to miss any please let me know so I can update this page accordingly.

A number of these websites have trailers created by Primus Animations which are specifically made for the english market often adapted from the original japanese trailer. I for one ended up purchasing Hanachirasu when I did specifically because of their trailer. So props to them for making some cool trailers. With my rambling ceasing let's begin looking at the websites (and subsequently the trailers on the websites) and then when they are all listed let's talk about them.

    Shiny Days: http://shinydays.us/
Super Sonico: Communication with Sonico: http://sonicomi.com/index.html   Flowers-Printemps: http://flowersgame.com/   Raidy III: http://raidy.us/   Starless: http://starless.us/   Hanachirasu: http://hanachirasu.com/   Littlewitch Romanesque: http://littlewitch.us/index.html   Yumina the Ethereal: http://yumina-the-ethereal.com/   Steins;Gate: http://steins-gate.us/   Aselia the Eternal: http://aselia.us/   School Days: http://schooldays.us   My Girlfriend is the President: http://mygirlfriendisthepresident.com/   Demonbane: http://demonbane.us/index.html   Moero Downhill Night Trilogy: http://moeronight.com/   Yukkuri Panic: Escalation: http://yukkuripanic.com   Princess Waltz: http://princesswaltz.com/   Cosplay Fetish Academy: http://cosplayfetishacademy.com   Seinarukana: The Spirit of Eternity Sword 2   Nympho Sensei Ryoko         My hopes for the future: It would be nice if they actually bothered marketing these a bit better admittedly half of these are able to be found on their website although a few of them you have to scrounge around to find. It's a decent step. I think the most recent trailers are definitely a step in the right direction as far as trailers go. I think that JAST really needs better marketing of it's actual gameplay visual novels. The websites have basic information and are generally decent overall. I did notice a few of the websites seem to have nothing until you scroll down a bit which I think is rather bad design at least put something there (littlewitch romanesque is one of the examples I'm talking about).   So which of these websites JAST has created is well the best designed and what additional features would you like to see on their websites in the future? Personally for me I think having links to reviews or possibly allowing user reviews (similar to mangagamer) would be a good step to take with these websites. A little bit more user interaction as well as keeping the websites up to date with any new details (School Days, My girlfriend is the President, Raidy III, and Aselia the Eternal should all have links to their sequels, prequels, and fan-discs). One specific detail that more of their websites need to have in the future is a goodies page with the ability to download wallpapers and other cool little things like a lot of the Japanese websites have. School Days is one such website that they actually did have the wallpapers for.    The main website on the other hand is currently lacking a proper forum (the way it currently works is absolutely horrendous), the website itself is rather not fully up to date...it would be nice to get progress updates a minimum of once a month considering we sometimes go a lot longer than that without any type of news. The JAST Devlog (tumblr) page is a step in the right direction but some aspects of that should be carried over to the main website in my opinion. The website also needs to let people know when there are sales...there is a sale currently going on and I could not find any information about it on their main website outside of the fact that the prices have been reduced. It doesn't say when it ends, what percentage off, any potential deals, etc... The website could use a bit of work...but JAST is not the only english visual novel company that has some major issues with its website but that will be for another post.   Just my opinion, and as new websites get created I'll add them to this list do let me know if I happened to miss any for JAST.

That's a bit pompous and wordy; it doesn't really fit the tone of the original IMHO, and changes the meaning a fair bit.

Perhaps "We seek others so we may be ourselves; we consider their happiness that we may find bliss."

Personally, I would leave it out in the translation.

What people seek in "it" differs with each person.
Some seek in it a place where they belong.
Some, a vision of happiness they've yet to see.
Some, a signpost for these unmapped roads.
Still some, an innocence, for reasons uncouth to question.
    -- Just as we seek others that we may know ourselves;
We seek their happiness that we may find our own.

Chronopolis reacted to Decay in AX2015 Hype/News Thread - Flowers, Root Double, G-Senjou, Himawari, Alicesoft, and more announcements!
Anime Expo runs from July 2nd - 5th in Los Angeles, and all three major english VN publishers will be present and announcing new products. This is the biggest convention of the year for VNs, and contains the highest concentration of new announcements, it's pretty exciting! Here's who will be there and what to expect from them:

    JAST

JAST's panel comes first at 10PM PDT on Thursday. Nobody is really sure what to expect from JAST, but they have claimed that they will be announcing some stuff there. The safe guess is a new Alcot game (moege dev, makers of My Girlfriend is the President and Clover Days), which is something they teased around six months ago. The more far-fetched guess is Muramasa by Nitro+. It seems like this is going to happen eventually, but JAST has also said they want to wait until projects are further along before announcing them, to avoid Hanachirasu and Sumaga incidents in the future. If you're attending, JAST's booth is #1319.

And it's over! JAST announced Flowers, an all-ages yuri/mystery VN, for fall 2015 which is kind of crazy since everyone thought MangaGamer would be the ones to handle that. Also SoniComi, which was translated and edited by the power duo of Tulip Goddess Maria and Ritobito, so actually look forward to that "soon". Seinarukana will also be out Fall 2015... supposedly. The Alcot game they teased earlier in the year was a no-show, but JAST seemed to imply that they may have more to announce at Comic-con so there is still hope for the moege lovers out there.

    Sekai Project

SP comes second, their panel is at 7PM PDT on Saturday. I know even less of what to expect from SP than JAST. I believe Key is attending AX as well. I would not be surprised by the announcement of another Key game being licensed, be it LB, Rewrite, or maybe even Angel Beats?? They planned to work with Doki on Clannad before that was dashed by the community's desire for a total retranslation, and Doki teased some Little Busters news sometime this summer, so LB may be the most likely suspect. They will also probably announce some doujin games, as is Sekai Project's habit. Interestingly, they just set up a Japanese twitter account and is tweeting about AX in it. It would be a humorous twist if they announce they'll be translating some OELVNs into Japanese. SP's booth is #1720.

Panel summary: Sekai Project continues to impress with their ability to license popular titles. They've managed to grab the highly lucrative Akabei Soft partnership, and will start by releasing G-Senjou no Maou this summer. They've licensed Root Double, a popular survival story made by the director of the Infinity games. They've also announced Chrono Clock for release "soon", which establishes a new partnership with the respected eroge developer Purple Software. Additional news: There will be a remake for the entire Narcissu trilogy, including part 3 in english for the first time, World End Economica Ep. 2 is releasing this month, and Clannad is releasing in November.

    MangaGamer

MangaGamer is last, hosting their panel at 9PM PDT on Saturday. Ryukishi07 of Higurashi and Umineko fame is attending the panel with them, likely to talk about Higurashi's western release. It may be too soon to announce another license deal with him, but who knows, it could happen. MangaGamer has teased four announcements, including three whole new partners. They have separately teased an announcement of a yuri game, and have recently conspicuously posted pictures of SonoHana merchandise at their booth (although they're known to sell goods from completely unrelated VNs). My guess: The one announcement from a current partner is going to be Tsuriotsu from Navel, but really, it could be anything. MG's booth is #919.

AND THAT'S ALL SHE WROTE! The big announcement of the MangaGamer panel was their partnership with Alice Soft, starting with Beat Blades Haruka. Other announcements included Himawari, a sci-fi work known in Japan for its intricate storytelling, A Kiss For The Petals - Remember How We Met is an all-ages yuri VN coming to Steam from the popular SonoHana yuri series, and MangaGamer will be updating and releasing the Witch Hunt translation of Umineko for sale, with new character sprites. Other news was that Sweet Sweat in Summer will be out this month, Kara no Shoujo 2 will be out this fall, and they're aiming for an end of 2015 release for Gahkthun.

Honorable mentions: Degica is attending and talked about their upcoming Muv-Luv kickstarter, which will go live late August or early September. Aksys Games announced that Zero Escape 3 is in the works and will be available in Summer 2016.

So what are you guys excited about? What do you think is going to happen? If you're attending, feel free to talk about your experiences on the show floor, although keep in mind this thread is about visual novels. I will be updating this post as new information comes out. Your wildest dreams didn't come true? Remember, Otakon is later this month and MG and others will have more announcements there, too.
