Why no one loves Evolimit? Sakura no Uta just had lot of hype by me. But by me Clannad and most stories from Key are overrated as well, so... Anyway, vote for Evolimit. Much better choice than that Kururu imo.

Cute heroine whose smile is brighter than sun

And cute character with cute catchphrases, like Kud's "wafuuu", Komari's "fueee", and Isara's 'aha!'

And maybe heroines who are not so good with English and tend to make comedic situation because of it.

Chronopolis reacted to CeruleanGamer in CeruleanGamer's 1,000th post! Look at this spammer...
So I finally reached the 1000th post club. God what a spammer! I've only been an official member for 6 or so months but I have been lurking as a guest forumer for about 2 years now. What forced me to make an account? Well, I had a terrible stalking experience with an old forum back in the day and vowed not to visit social sites anymore, but finding a job in the social media marketing field last year kinda pulled me back in again to be a huge socialite on the internet. So, I decided to pull away from the fear and embrace being a crazy internet spammer socialite once again. And Fuwanovel forums made me feel right at home. Every member has been nice to me, like a typical VN protagonist being sincere to his virgin lover's first time experience. No negative experience that I can think of so far.

It's awesome when I have a work-at-home job because I can fool around and play VNs more than someone who has to drag their ass to the office and listen to their boss nag at them all day. All of a sudden, I found myself making fuwanovel one of my official homepage tabs because it's an awesome resource for a recreational activity that I spend almost the same time as I do with work and replying/posting at least 10 times a day. Anyways, I will make the obligatory thank you, appreciate, kudos, "whatever the fuck you call it" thread for the people who helped me get here and made my fuwanovel experience much more lively. If I forgot to mention you, please don't hurt me. I love you with all my heart!

@Tay: For putting up this site together and also not nuking our precious hangout spot to oblivion for too long during maintenance.

@Zenophilious: Very helpful mod plus we have one thing in common. I reread Fate Stay Night/Hollow Ataraxia more times than I could count with my fingers.

@Nosebleed: Thank you for Lilium x Triangle. For some reason I end up playing the entire thing again after you guys did the English patch. Also for keeping us people who gave up on Nisekoi long time ago updated with the whole “ordeal”.

@Kaguya: Shikkoku no Sharnoth was a great read. Thanks for posting an info thread about it.

@KosakiFag: Thanks for keeping us updated with Alicesoft translations and games.

@Stormwolf: I agree with many things you say in this forum. You are very critical with your preferences and sometimes it’s hard for people to express that, yet you do it with ease.

@Decay and @Rooke: I like it when there’s at least one person who disagrees with me and present valid arguments and making me see the other side of it. Sometimes, it’s hard to find people like you guys because all they do is just troll and spout nonsense but on the other hand, you both are very calm and respectful.

@Valmore: Your posts are top quality. Keep me entertained, now and forever.

Chronopolis reacted to AaronIsCrunchy in What are your H-scenes preferences in visual novels?
I'm all for H-scenes until they're actually happening. Then it's just 'ugh, I can't wait for this irritating fuckfest to be over so I can actually continue with things.' Annoyingly though, I like the idea of 'couple-based' H-scenes (like, two people forming a relationship) because sometimes the sentiment behind it's really nice, so I don't turn H-scenes off in case they're actually relevant.

That said, any H-scene which goes mouth/vagina/bum (or anything in that order...) in one go is either gratuitous and annoying, or so hilariously bad that the very idea of popping a cock-rocket is impossible.

So I was reading G Sejno no Maou, every time my brother came in the room, on screen was Gonzou. Every damn time. So on tirhd or fourth time, he just said 'instead of dating busty manga-girls, you still looking at hairchested males'. And he never gave me any chance of explaining what was I reading. ;_;

Not too long ago I was playing Huniepop when my mom walked in. This wouldn't have been an issue if I hadn't been in the middle of a date with Celeste, where she was wearing one of her... skimpier outfits. (Read: you could see her nipples through her bikini top)

Mom: "Why does she look like that?

I'm pretty shameless, and eroges don't typically get me "excited" most of the time, however being the shameless man that I am, there has been on more than one occasion that I have been "caught" (I quote that because it's not really getting caught if you don't care, right?) by my cousin while laughing at amusing sex scenes in VN's. Particularly of note was a couple weeks ago actually, when I was finishing up Neko Para Vol 1, and if you've played it, well... the h-scenes are pretty uh... Animated? Heh.

Basically, I'm sitting there in awe of how animated it was and with my fascination with neko's who happen to be IN MAID ATTIRE, I didn't quite notice my cousin walking in my room until the last second. There was a good five seconds of silence as I continued to click my mouse, half-heartedly watching while my cousin stared from the screen to my face multiple times, to my crotch, then back to my face, blinked a dozen times, twitched, and finally said, "You're joking, right? Right? You would do something like that and not care..."

Yep. I'm that one guy that doesn't care if his female cousin walks in on him shamelessly watching a good plowing take place while simply shrugging and saying, "Look at it! It's animated! So cute right?!"

But you know, this happens often for me, and I never really cared, and I can casually talk about sex, porn, or other lewd things with family/friends/random people with no worries. Of course I know TPO well, but I'm not easily embarrassed by those things I guess. If anything, it's actually amusing for me when/if I do get "caught" because the other person ends up being the embarrassed one!

    I'm weird, I know.

Still playing Kokuzai wo Ukerubeki mono. Seriously, the author has a penchant for utsuge developments. I'm feeling pretty sick to my stomach. If the VN didn't have it's own charm, genuineness, and impression-lasting characters, I would have called bullshit and quit already.
Edit: Finished the game (Kokuzai wo Ukerubeki Mono)
Honestly, I should have known from the opening chapter where this was headed. Oh, the thought passed by mind. But I think I took for granted the structure this VN would take.
"Maybe this game is about giving someone something and then slowly taking it away from them, in the most painful way possible."
"Ohh, the protagonist is going to get it?"
Those ideas I had jokingly were very wrong, but also correct in a way. What I wasn't prepared for was how painful and sick this game would make me feel.
I thought I liked dark things. No, I just like sorrow, melancholy, gentleness, stoicness, and catharsis. This is like the first part of Saya no Uta, except without the excitement of horror. You're like "WHY is this happening?". And there is no answer. At least no answer that will answer your question.
Plot twists that revolve around some iron law, already sit pretty sinkingly in my stomach. But this didn't use that. It, while not directly, was thematically bound to that, all over, which some how made things much much worse.
The characters, even the ones you want to adore, weren't my favorite characters of all time, not by a longshot. I wouldn't even call them my favourites. Most of the characters here were rough around the edges, lacking the polish and focus that you see in most characters. Basically they had all these human like moments which normally would be superfluous in a normal story. But they all had moments were you could acknowledge them, or even be moved by them. The cast of characters was something the VN did well, even if I'm left wondering if it had any meaning in the end.
The plot progression. You can't really predict what will happen next. You probably can't, and if you can, I doubt it's the kind of story where you'd gain any satisfaction from doing so. While the cause and effect is decently explained, the plot is kinda forced and railroaded at times, though it does pass through a number of memorable moments and countless semi-memorable (also semi-weird) moments.
As a fantasy story, this story doesn't exist. Even though there's a somewhat of a world, and worldy events. If you take it as such, you'll be extremely frustrated come the end. One should read it as seeing a cast of characters, with their own views, positions, and personalities.
Notably, Kokuzai wo Ukerubeki Mono, relative to any other VN I've played, was fucking torture. The first half was balanced, if not kinda jagged and severe, but the second half was ridiculous. Even the really well-closed out ending and it's catharsis was not enough to hold at bay the frustration and anger of "what the fuck was the point of that?" of the last third. (The ending was great. I cried buckets.) Who the fuck enjoys this? How do you expect me to feel the rush of valor at some character's last moments when I'm too busy vomiting internally and being empty from what's happened in the last couple chapters. It's like trying to enjoy your favourite comfort food while swishing a mouthful of hot sauce. I'm numb, I'm in pain!

In any case, the doujin artist is an otome writer, and their preferred pairing is younger woman with older men. So you get some pretty odd and somewhat unsettling (probably as unsettling as typical moe eroge relationships to a normal person) relational undertones. And so the tactic of surviving utusge by periodically gazing at the moe doesn't work at all here. It was a very bitter VN to read. I don't regret it...but, that doesn't change the fact that the last third was torture.
I respect what the author's created and acknowledge their skill in certain areas (like pulling one in to the story, and the characters), but I'm not touching any of their utsuge works with a twenty foot pole. Even though the premises catch my eye... Never.

I'd say it takes about 2 hours a day for about 6 months (about 360 hours of study) to get to a decent place to try starting reading VN's. This is focusing on grammar and reading (not conversation or writing). A few people actually get through this in 6 months, but most kind of wind through it in 1-1.5 years. Another reason why the start takes longer is that its the part where you have to get used to studying Japanese, and also figure out what you should be studying about. It's very disorienting for the first while since you'll have no idea how close you are to being able to read.
After that, about 1000 hours of reading and another 200 hours of grammar/vocab study (this part is very important, don't stop studying completely once you've started reading) and you'll be able to read 95% of VN's comfortably with dictionary assistance. This part probably takes another 1-1.5 years.
Add another 1000 hours of reading and 200 hours of grammar/vocab study, and you can read most VN's without dictionary assistance without looking up too many words.
I don't like to say "you can read VN's if you study for 5 years." It's more like, if you study for X amount of hours (with a non-silly study method), there's no way you won't make substantial progress towards your goal.

Recently played ebi-hime's Asphyxia. It was surprisingly good. The writing was flowery and fluid (a stark contrast to most things you'd find tl'ed or originally in english) and the vocab is rather wide. The handling of its subject matter (depression) was done really well. It never glorified Samantha's unhealthy obsession with Lillian, and how she handled things. It was portrayed to be exactly that -- unhealthy. But at the same time, it understood how difficult it is to cope with it. But despite the subject matter, it also knew how to be funny. The humor blended well into the characters' conversations. Speaking of which, the characters were very good too. Their beliefs were defined; often conflicting with each other, and it shows in their personality, and also their chemistry. The way Sam acted around Roberta is different from the way she acted around Lillian, and so on. If you're familiar with the figures as romantic poets you'll find that most of their comments -- from the more grounded ones to the more WTFLOL ones -- are based on reality. And it's very pleasing, and enjoyable. ebi-hime included a notes section which details their lives so even if you're unfamiliar with them, you could enjoy that small aspect of it. There is very little for me to complain about. Hope more people support it.

    Hey, welcome to the forum!

To answer your question, reading visual novels untranslated is possible even without knowing the language completely, with the use of text hookers and translation programs. Personally, I have been learning Japanese on my own for about 6 months, and I am capable of reading fairly normal moege titles with ease.
That being said, a lot of VNs in the mystery, horror genre and also other VNs with plot that would naturally introdouce difficult words and phrases are difficult to read, even with these programs, and it would probably take years of learning to truly have a pleasant reading experience with such titles.
Clephas has a fairly in depth thread on this, though I don't have the link for it at the moment. Let me edit the post once I find it.

Hello ladies and gentlemen of fuwa! Today I will be sharing with you a little writing project I've been working on. Thanks so much to Forgetful Frank for agreeing to edit the book for me! When I started I was editing it myself, which is slow work and I often miss mistakes in my own writing, and so this way it should be a lot better for everyone involved Also, a big thanks to Melowbee for making the illustration for Kitsune! It's a wonderful confidence boost to actually have someone make drawings for my story!

    On to the book:

    キツネと私 - Kitsune and me

    Summary:
After spending half a day locked in her clubroom at school, Sakura heads home in the middle of the night, in pouring rain. Taking refuge from the terrible conditions, she stumbles into and old and mysterious shrine. Here she discovers a strange little artifact that she thinks may have been stolen from a museum. Wanting to get it checked out the next day, she brings the artifact home. But as the artifact ends up coming to life in the form of the ditsy, energic and completely stunning Kitsune, Sakura's life will never be the same again...

    Information on the book:
Kitsune and me is primarily a comedy, focusing on the relationship between the main character Sakura, and her new guardian ... fox-girl, Kitsune Mimiko. When writing it I focus primarily on having fun and silly interactions between the two, and purposely try to use clichés from common visual novel, anime, manga and light novel works. It's a fun little project I recently decided to start working on, and it's not meant to be taken too seriously. The story offers elements of comedy, romance (yuri), fantasy and action. The structure is fairly similar to most VNs, in that it starts of fluffy and is riddled with mainly humor, and then it gets more dramatic towards the end.

Also, note that this is written in English, though I use certain words and phrases from Japanese. Again, this isn't meant to be taken too seriously. Words such as bentou will be in the book to keep the essence of the "Japanese setting" and words such as "ne" will be left in Kitsune's sentences, as they are a part of her speech pattern and that doesn't translate as well into English in my opinion. I also keep Japanese titles when I see fit, like using Kitsune's name. For these parts, translations are on the side of the Japanese symbols.

Gahkthun was pretty damn amazing. Fist things first, I need to hype those who haven't yet realized its brilliance.
The game looks amazing. Designs are sleek, and the CGs and characters designs are gorgeous, shining with vibrant colors.   Writing is beautiful, meaningful and truly a joy to read, from mundane dialogue to poetic narration. The translation is top notch too. I was pleasantly surprised to see such charming classical English, and having to reach for English dictionary from time to time.   The characters are great. Especially Tesla & Neon, but the members of the council and some other side characters are beautifully realized as well. The women of Gahkthun take the spotlight most of time, and for a good reason. Steampunk games host many of the best female characters I've seen and Gahkthun is not an exception. Trying to sum up them briefly or lump them together wouldn't do them any justice, so just take my word for it. The women of Gahkhun are truly impressive.     Now, few meaningful words for those already familiar with Steampunk games, for those have read Gahkthun or for those filled with curiosity, dying to learn more. (This part doesn't contain spoilers)
Now I'll just have to go through some literature references that caught my attention in Gahkthun, read the rest of the Steampunk games and become an even bigger fan.
