  1. We're going to be running a poll on http://fuwanovel.se/ next week on the best VNs to read on a cold winter day, much like the one we did on Halloween VNs. Anything with a cold setting and a heartwarming storyline. If you have any VN suggestions to add to the list please let me know! Not every VN will make it onto the poll, but we'll also have a curated list of community suggestions listed with the poll results.

    What are you playing?

It's true that this can be chalked up to a large variety of factors, but it's also true that the translation is dramatically better in just about every conceivable way. I had a similar experience. Degica's Muv Luv Extra made me laugh several times an hour while I maybe laughed once or twice the entire time reading Ixrec's Muv Luv. Translation is strange in the way it can have huge effects on how readers react to a work in ways that are completely invisible to the reader. Oftentimes when reading a substandard translation, the reader will enjoy themselves less without ever realizing why, or that the translation is substandard. That's one of the reasons translation quality is so important, even for people who only care if "they can understand what's happening." ANYWAY, I've been reading Re;Lord lately. It's surprisingly good, as long as you can tolerate a terrible protagonist who is meant to be laughed at instead of related to. It's just good dumb fun, and probably one of SP's best-translated games, in all honesty. It's a little short and very much an incomplete story (with part two coming out eventually, hopefully soon), but I recommend giving it a shot.

  3. For what it's worth I'm a really big PE fan, got the VN during the Humble Bundle sale, and read the all ages version. I haven't yet read the 18+ release yet but the all ages release didn't feel like it was missing anything and I didn't feel like it was cut, or frankly even notice the edits. Like adamstan said, if you do want to read the 18+ version it's on sale so may as well get it while it's discounted, but I don't think there'd be as drastic a difference between the releases to the point where one is clearly superior over the other. IMO it'd definitely be worth a read if you like the premise, and it's my third favorite VN (I'd give it a 9 out of 10).

    Winter VN poll

Oh, I completely forgot that Sepia Tears is also very much a winter-themed VN. Also free and heartwarming.

    Winter VN poll

The "heartwarming storyline" requirement makes it quite hard. I'd love to just drop Swan Song in there if i could.

    Winter VN poll

Those two things are not mutually exclusive. Well, Santa is among the better ones in the series and very heavy on the Christmas themes. It's also pure fanservice (no hentai), so it's relatively safe to recommend. It's still a 5-6/10 kind of VN though...

It's currently at -30% on Jast USA. And this, yeah. The discounts at Christmas sale are usually higher.

Good chance it will go on sale for Christmas, so you probably won't have to wait much longer.

    What are you playing?

I liked PE very much, it is near the top of my VN list, with score of 8.5 I plan to reread all-ages version some day, as I bought it on Steam too. All-ages version is direct port of console version, with some replacement content for h-scenes. (that's why, unlike with the fandisc, there's no +18 patch from Mangagamer, as the versions differ too much). I think it should be good in this version too - while h-scenes were actually quite nice in this VN, not showing them shouldn't harm the story, assuming it's only the actual sex-scene being cut, like in Sanoba Witch. But if you don't like moeges or anything close to them - obviously don't bother with it, as it is just sweet romance story.

  14. From the recently necro'd thread about Libra of the Vampire Princess: Sounds familiar, doesn't it? But other thing baffles me. There certainly ARE many Japanese people who are fluent at English - I refuse to believe otherwise. So why PROFESSIONAL TRANSLATION SERVICES don't hire them, and instead opt to produce unreadable gibberish? Do those tl companies (not game localization, but in general) pay their translators too little, and a person who is actually good at English just has many better job opportunities? It would certainly be ironic in a pretty disturbing way, if only people who suck at English would be desperate enough to work as translators...

  15. Hey, so you're a representative of that scammer company? Nice threat you have there, you piece of shit. Shame that everyone can see what kind of quality work you put out there.

  16. Here I am, I took a few nights to try the titles we have marked. I managed to try Soulset, Fata Morgana no Yakata and The Ballad Singer. Soulset: has a very intriguing story, even the illustrations are very pleasant. Fata morgana no Yakata: I really enjoyed the soundtrack and the "particular" narrative style. What surprised me is The Ballad Singer, it has an integral narrative, beautiful illustrations and interactive elements that change the narrative path. I have not had many days to try them, I will continue in the next days

    What are you playing?

Yeah, I have to agree. And as Dreamysyu was saying, translation quality is all the more noticeable when it comes to comedy. When you think about it, translation is all about meaning and form. A decent translation will preserve the meaning, while a great translation will also word the message in a way that a native speaker finds compelling and suited to the context. Comedy is all about form. Trying to make comedy out of meaning alone is like trying to make people laugh by explaining why a joke is supposed to be funny. It's no big surprise then that this is when translation quality shines the most.

  18. I agree with the sentiment on Root Double. It's one of those situations where you can clearly tell the wanted to do something cool and interesting, but the reason people stick to a choice system is because trying to get funky tends to fail. The obvious desire is to create a more diverse system of choices, but until we create free thinking AI, the choice will always be binary.

    What are you playing?

To quote my impressions of the choice system when I read Root Double: Looking back, most of the times the text prior to the choice indicated what a high value would probably mean and the way it works even gets something like an in-universe explanation somewhere down the line but imo it's still worse than just having straight up choices imo. The only thing you can really change by using values other than 1, 4 or 8 is whose character mini-ending you get which amounts to a short scene and a CG, except for one or two decisions.

    An Official Farewell

Hey, never say never. Maybe VNs will come back to ha... I mean, entertain you yet. ^^ And, well, no hard feelings for sure. I know how hard it can be to deal with a place/topic connected to bad memories and anxieties, moving on is sometimes the right choice. If you ever feel like giving VNs and this place another go, don't hesitate to say hello. No one will mind the "inconsistency".

    Steam Autumn Sale

Got Little Busters, eden*, Aviary Attorney, Analogue & Hate Plus and Crypt of the Necrodancer (not a VN, but for some reason cheaper if you own the Danganronpa games). Now I have to live on rice and potatoes for the next week but sometimes you have to set priorities.

    Sanoba Witch Discussion

About 80-90% of each after story is comprised of an h-scene, with the rest being a flimsy justification for the said h-scene. I wasn't aware that they weren't in the all-ages version, but that makes sense. They'd seriously be five minutes each otherwise and wouldn't really make any sense. Also, a patch went out earlier today. It's still being uploaded to NekoNyan's various partners, but it's at least live on Steam and I think NekoNyan's own site. Check where you bought the game from for the latest version. This patch contains fixes for all of the reported text errors, as well as more found during another quick pass we did on the game to polish it up.

Probably going to hold off on buying Fata Morgana 'till the PS Vita version comes out, AKA the "Dreams of the Revenants Edition" with additional story. Already added to my wishlist.

  25. Another week, so here's another update for this week below: Common: 100.0% Sora: 0.0% Marika: 100.0% Natsuki: 0.0% Misa: 70.59% Rikka: 0.0% Touko: 0.0% Total: 32.23% Good that Trip did took a liking at Misa's route, and that he already finished with Misa's school arc along with reach 30% translated mark. Oh and even if we have Misa's route fully translated at the next week (Which is almost certain), Trip did say that it's still didn't mean that we'll gonna have Misa's patch at the next week because there's still some editing work (I assume that he'll release it two weeks later). That's all for this week update.

  26. Apologies for making this thread in the "Introduce Yourself" section, but I see nowhere else to put it. Anyway, after taking the time to regather my thoughts considering my recent mental state, I've officially decided that I will be leaving Fuwanovel. This isn't out of personal malice, but considering everything I have directly and indirectly caused on both this forum and on the discord, my stress level is at an all-time high, and I could not take the pressure anymore. You guys were good people, and it was fun to hang out with you while it lasted. That being said, I was never into VNs to begin with. For this whole time, I felt like I was forcing myself to read a medium I do not particularly enjoy in order to fit in with the community, and it just felt unnatural. Don't forget that I never joined this community for VNs alone, but that I just wanted to mingle with people, and that's about it really. Obviously, this backfired on me as I had no idea what you guys were talking about 90% of the time, and I only made myself known talking about non-VN related stuff. I'm more of an anime and video game type of guy, and VNs are just not for me. I'm very sorry. The only VN I'll continue to read after this is Fate/stay night because, you know, it's Fate, but that'll be my last VN ever. Take care guys. I'll still remember you for a long time to come.
