Funnerific reacted to Maxel in Sharin no Kuni Prefundia page is up
Let's start with, where does the english title comes from?

Let's continue with, why the hell is "OPENING" (DEMO MOVIE?) not translated? It's probably because they don't have capable translators of doing so. As we all know most openings are quite hard to translate. Key did their job though. It might also suggest that they want to minimalize costs if kickstarter fail, they can abort the mission without losing much money.
And now, it looks like they're quite sceptical, by quite I mean QUITE towards core VN fanbase, and the crowd which is gonna try to fund this project. Project which is planning to edit existing superb translation, and make it top tier level. Yeah... Nope.
I heard that Sharin no Kuni h-scenes are bad or something, but... I think most people still want uncut version. I wonder what these "..." mean... Figure it out for yourselves.

You thought that Root Double devs were mad with shikishi pricing? Well, there you go! They're running for top tier spot with this price. I think they should add something like: Only for 4,000$!!

Let's look at the cost breakdown now:

    Localization costs of Grisaia SERIES - 64,000$ (Frontwing + SP) (50h+/10h+/10h+ = 70h+)
Localization costs of Clannad - 56,000$ (Key + SP) (50h+)
    Localization costs of Muv-Luv TRILOGY - 57,500$ (Age + Degica) (30h+/50h+ = 80h+)
    Localization costs of Root Double - 36,450$ (Regista + Lemnisca/SP) (50h+)
Localization costs of Sharin no Kuni - 49,000$ (Frontwing) (10h+)
Sharin no Kuni isn't a monstrous sized visual novel, it doesn't have 100,000 lines of text, yet looks like editing of a translation is quite costly, especially such high quality editing that this VN will probably receive.
Let's move further. Development costs 35,000$ I really do wonder where it goes? This visual novel was already translated, engine is old and well-known, because of this there shouldn't be much to do to make it run on english language Windows? Let's also add 7,000$ to that for creating a kickstarter page, and... yeah. There we have 140,000$, it's totally reasonable amount.
That should be all for now from my side... I'm disappointed. Can't wait to see their interaction with "fans" if there will be any.

Funnerific reacted to TexasDice in Can reviews be objective?
"When people ask for objective reviews, they are not asking asking for 100% objectivity, they are asking for the pursuit of objectivity. You can never 100% achieve objectivity with a review, but you can pursue it to the best of your ability. And that means attempting, where relevant, to either disclose or put aside your personal biases.
That does not mean, that you can't express your opinion, far from it. What it does mean, is that you should attempt to contrast your opinion with those of others and put yourself in the shoes of other people.

When you're writing a review, obviously your personal experiences and own opinions are going to be a huge factor there. But as far as I'm concerned, you need to make a decent effort to look in from outside, to look through the window. Put yourself in the shoes of others, because your ultimate goal is to serve the consumer. - In my opinion.
I've built my entire business on this very idea, that everything I create is not for me, it's for the consumer. And I need to try and detach myself from my personal opinions from time to time. I could still use them heavily - and I do - but if I have biases, those are the things I should be disclosing to my audience, so that those, who are watching my critiques, are made aware in advance of the kind of biases that I'm going to be holding.

I probably won't be able to do it perfectly, because I'm going to be able to explain a point of view that I hold much better than one I do not, but you should be giving it a try, frankly."
    - TotalBiscuit
This copy&paste is basically exactly where I stand.

If you didn't like a certain aspect of your reviewed piece of art (like the comedy), but don't have enough knowledge about that to ascertain whether or not fans of that aspect would enjoy it, make sure to make your readers know that you don't like this particular part due to your personal biases/preference.
If you can't set aside your bias, at least explain it.

Funnerific reacted to Vorathiel in Do you believe in VNs?
I was pondering about starting this threat for quite some time, but final 'nail' was from "Philosophical/psychological VN"  thread in recommendations.

" VN you can actually learn something from ". But do you really?
I have a big problem here myself. But first things first:
I'm reading lots of books, watching tv series, watching movies. I have a fair amount of knowledge about movies, much higher than 'regular watcher'. So I can easily distinct when somehting is 'valuable', or just plain shit.
And I believe in them. When charatcers in books/series/movies ['b/s/m' for future refference] are doing 'interesting' thngs I believe them. I believe that science b/s/m selling me is somehow right (of course I'm not going to believe in science in movies like Transformes or Lucy, but when highly acclaimed one is dealing with f.e biology, psychology, or 'down to earth' science I immidiatelly believe it).
I also believe in human interactions. When guy is approaching girl in interesting way, I believe that this could work. When characters are responding to 'normal live' events, like fe death of somebody close, I read or watch it and I believe that this behaviour could actually happen in real life.
I'm obtaining a knowledge about human behaviour, about patterns, about how they think, how they act, what could tickle them, what could irk them.

And there goes VNs. I spend more than last 6 month almost solely focusing on reading them. And I don't believe them. Like, at all.
Situations, even when they're down to earth, ignites sometimes so bizarre reactions from heroines, that sometimes it's just interesting to read how ridiculous this could be (I'm looking at you Grisaia, Sharin, Hoshimemo), but I never absorb this as any 'pattern' of how people actualy might act. When girls suffers from PTSD after some trauma in her childhood I believe in what movie is showing to me, but when VN is doing this I found it cancerous.
Same with science. Steins;Gate had a fair amount of actuall science, many aspects of that I was familiar with, so I could naturally believe that rest of it made sense too. But I couldn't. Other VNs killed that ability in me.

I'm reading VNs but other that pure 'fun' or 'cancerous fun', I don't find any valuable things, like I do in other creations of culture.
So when VN is 'making me think', like Sharin no Kuni was trying with theme of 'society', I think for myself about it, but when VN is proposing some answers I immidiatelly rejects them, believing that they're taken out of ass, scientifically innacurate.
How is it with you? Do you believe in VNs? Do you absorb what they're showing as something which mirrors RL to some point, or rejects it all? And how it looks for you with b/s/m?

OMIGAWSH. So much room for speculation! There's some trees, and there's a school hallway, and some sort of standard interior of a Japanese home, and the outline of a girl.
Who knows what they might have in store for us? Could there be cute girls who each fit into a particular gimmick, but not strictly so? Could there be certain sexual scenarios that accommodate to certain dispositions of the viewer, but that aren't too bold? Could there be virtually useless technical features intended to set the game apart from its competitors? Yuzusoft's got us on the edge of our seats as always!

Funnerific reacted to OriginalRen in Solidbatman Hospitalized
Resident salt producer and pancake hater solidbatman posted on on his Tweeter account that he has been hospitalized as of Tuesday for excessive objects being shoved deep into his anal cavity. While news reports indicate that a single French man was seen attending his house the other weekend, no speculation has been addressed as to the connection between the mysterious colleague and the incident. Eye witness reports state that the man appeared to be in his mid twenties, and was seen spotting a sporty Muv-Luv t-shirt around the victim's home. Here is a predicted sketch of the individual:
The 23-year-old solidbatman (or something close to that) did not provide a reason for the hospitalization or his current condition, but he stated that he will receive treatment so that he can recover his health. Well-known for starting the unban Run campaign, and for causing a massive amount of butt hurt feelings to all Key fans, solidbatman is a true pillar to this community.
Truly a gripping moment. We all pray that he be safe in this time of mourning.

You are completely correct in that I don't really care about Japanese people across the world who I have only engaged with through their written works, other than about said writing. If I spent time worrying about everyone, no matter if I had an emotional connection to them, I'd be hit with blow after emotional blow literally every day. Not caring about everyone is a healthy part of human nature.
I completely agree that emptily wishing people well rings extremely hollow, which is why I didn't. If you have a problem with the social construct causing this well-wishing, though, you should probably find a more appropriate angle of attack than a headline on a third-rate news website.

Sanah touched on one aspect, I'll touch on another. The sex in Mass Effect is not explicit, compared to the sex in the majority of VNs which IS explicit.
Most importantly though, Lawrence used the game 'Mass Effect' as an example to back up her point. Badly. See, she had asked a person backstage for an example of a video game with sex scenes and she got the reply - Mass Effect has lots and lots of pornography. Unfortunately for her, Mass Effect does NOT have lots and lots of pornography, in fact Mass Effect has zero pornography at all. When asked whether she played the game during the interview, she said 'no'. Obviously this was always going to result in much ridicule.
Which was why the author suddenly found an influx of reviews of her book on Amazon. Reviews like this:
"I know all about this book but have never fully read it. Why? Due to the overwhelming backlash, I have no choice but to agree with the 1 star ratings. The rumors are rampant that this book was poorly written and poorly researched. So without verifying the contents myself - I give it a 1 star. Good thing video games aren't judged in this manner - whew!!!"
And this meant she had to deliver a public apology. So, why is sex in Mass Effect viewed so innocently? Because there was no EXPLICIT sex in Mass Effect.
Cerulean Gamer brings up a point about the Witcher, which purportedly does include sex related images. BUT you have to remember that the Witcher has a reputation on the internet as being a sexist (some say misogynistic) game, because of how women are treated in it. Obviously this treatment of women is consistent with the world, it's not a nice place, but that doesn't stop the argument that the Witcher is sexist. Furthermore, the sex cards from the first Witcher were CENSORED in the American version of the game (along with some other stuff) and only available uncensored in the international version (of which I have.) Sex cards were not included in the second installment of the game, probably because of complaints. I have no experience with Grand Theft Auto, although if you recall the 'Hot Coffee mod' sparked a massive, MASSIVE furore.
So I see no inconsistent treatment with regard to Western Games and VNs.

Funnerific got a reaction from Black Sands Entertainment in So last night I lost my entire best squad in a mission on X-Com 2
    1) Get soldiers stuck in the air on a collapsed roof with no cover. While it's not difficulty-related, I never got it the first time I played through the game.
    2) Have your soldier eat a crit from a muton at max sight range while hunkering down in full cover on the same level (so no high ground bonus). Why did they remove the crit immunity, again?
    3) Four soldiers miss 75-80% shots at one turn, and during the enemy turn a new enemy pack strolls into my line of sight. Meanwhile a muton knocks out one of my guys, in trying to save him I waste the entire turn taking 60-70% shots at the muton and missing, then pretty much lose my entire team the next time the aliens make a move.
And that was just the commander difficulty.
