    He stated he has zero knowledge about the source language. What you'd have here is not a translation, but some beautiful gibberish, which would probably do worst than better to the game and the readers. How would he know if his editing is correct when he doesn't understand what is written there?
    Ratboi, you should at least get to know how Japanese works in terms of sentence structure before going through the game with a machine translation. And I seriously suggest you to drop this idea of editing the game and just enjoy it by yourself.

    "Supposed to be" going?  There's no such thing.  Nowhere will you find a rulebook that says "Thou shalt not release censored-only versions of thine games".
    I hate Moenovel, SakuraGame, and Winged Cloud's market "strategies", and to me they represent everything wrong with the VN market, and I hope they crash and burn.  But that's not the same thing as saying that's not "how it's supposed to be".  Supposed to be according to whom?  From a certain point of view, what they're doing is working, isn't it?  And the only thing a business is "supposed to" do is make money, right?

    In which cases is it unnecessary? It's just a little hard to take your criticisms seriously when all you say is "they added words." "Adding words" is an integral part of the translation process. Sometimes removing them, too! I'd be interested to see a more nuanced criticism of the translation.

    What the hell do you want these people to do?? It should be obvious that these people do not speak fluent English, so why in god's name do you expect them to somehow know what's better for a translation than the actual people working on it?
    And to answer your question, yes the companies do actually look over the translations, and I know for a fact that Palette made suggestions on it.

    Nobody from Sekai touched the translation. Have you considered that maybe, the translator himself just realized how terrible of a choice that is?

    Okay, everything that has been edited is now properly accounted for in the tools.  Here is the current project status (all of these are edited percentages):
    Total edited: 5609/108888  (5.2%)
    Shoku route: 2860/41882  (6.8%)
    Gi route: 1390/38852 (3.6%)
    Go route: 1358/25983 (5.2%)
    Kan route: 1/2171  (basically 0%)
    Over the course of my time on this project I transitioned, basically, from translating the remaining h-scenes into being a transleditor.  Nobody else was willing to do it, and the script needs some serious whipping into shape.  Also, I was much more haphazard in my editing before.  I would simply edit parts of files that clearly needed it as I happened to stumble across them.  This is reflected in the editing percentages, which are haphazard and show a lot of minor work mostly spread across the whole project, while a few files were very heavily edited.  For example, the majority of what is "edited" in Go happens to be the parts of Non's h-scenes that I translated (which mostly required only minor touching up).
    Then the tools were ready.  And with the tools came nice stats.  With the stats, a good look at the state of the script.  I hadn't realized exactly how big the script was.  It's more than a hundred thousand lines! No, I'm not going anywhere.  Don't panic.  (And put this fish in your ear.  Trust me.)
    But it does mean a change in approach.  As many of you probably know, the game is split into three routes (and one final bonus route, Kan), one for each of the three factions Shoku, Gi, and Go.  From now on, we are doing one route at a time.  First up is Shoku.  It's the longest, and it's the one our translator has decided to focus on finishing the h-scenes for.
    This doesn't really mean much. The editing percentages for other routes just won't move for awhile.  No, it's not your imagination.  Yes, it's on purpose.

    I think the fundamental mistake of trying to translate something like Asa-baka is to keep the name + title suffix structure and just try to replace the suffix with something else. This structure is a unique Japanese construct because it spoofs their typical -kun, -chan, -san title suffixes. This doesn't exist in English, so it simply can't work here.
    If an English person tries to do a similar thing, he'll usually try to replace part of the name with something else. For example, if you want to provoke good old Hercules, you might call him Dorkules. Or if you think that Nicolas Sarkozy was a greedy guy you can turn his name to Nicolas Sharkozy. Or if you don't like Tony Blair, you might transform his name to Tony Bland.
    So Asa-baka shouldn't be translated to something like Asa-Something, instead the full name Asaba should be twisted to something else. Maybe Asatard for retard or Asoron for moron. Or use the full name Asaba Yuuma to get a funny combination. There are most likely better variants, but I guess just asking an 8 - 12 year old kiddo what he'd do with this name if that would be his most hated classmate will lead to the best and most creative results.

    So, I know what I would suggest doing with this conceptually, but I'm having trouble putting it into practice for this precise scenario. A good way to insulting nickname people is, like @ChaosRaven said, to use the full name and a brief insulting descriptor with a strong rhyme: "Asaba no-bra" or "Weak-jaw Asaba" or "all-flaws Asaba" or "no-chutzpa Asaba". Some of those came from my head, more of them from futzing around on rhyming sites for a couple minutes, but certainly none of them would actually fit in context: I think ending "ah" might just be a hard sound to rhyme in English. Agreed with the prevailing opinion that "Asa-bat" sounds terrible, though, not just because the meaning is non-obvious, but especially because it doesn't even freaking rhyme: the vowel in the English word "bat" sounds completely different from the Japanese syllable "ba". Rhyming is about sound, not about spelling. So, they definitely dropped the ball on this joke in a lot of ways.
    All that said, I'd jump at the chance to make fun of this guy for talking by calling him "Asablah, blah, blah".

    Edit: No, you can't. And I say that as someone who's moderately in favor of leaving honorifics in.  It's not an honorific. It's an insult. Calling someone stupid is not some untranslatable concept.

    Adding words is perfectly reasonable on going from a more implicitly terse language such as Japanese to a more explicitly verbose language such as English. Sometimes a whole sentence is required to convey the nuance of just one word in Japanese. The converse may also happen but is extremely rare by comparison.

    I mean, you do hear things like "You're bats/batty" to mean someone's crazy, etc, but....
    (bats/batty comes from "bats in the belfry", which in itself is a phrase I've never heard of)
    I don't think any average English speaker is going to get what bat is supposed to mean here lol.

    I think the last time I remember hearing bat used in this context is by the Joker, when he says something along the lines of "You're making me batty" to, guess who? Batman.
