Locked Heart (free otome VN review)

Disclaimer: This was the first purely GxB otome game I’ve ever played and my experience was most likely very different from that of a fan of the genre. While I stand by my conclusions, they’re definitely written from an unusual perspective.

Locked Heart is a game I’ve encountered pretty much by chance, while randomly browsing VNs available on Google Play. As a nice-looking, free title it quickly found its way into my wishlist, but belonging to a genre I usually don’t play (and apparently following a very standard otome formula), it was never very high on my to-read list. Only another coincidence, leaving me stranded in a café for multiple hours with nothing but my tablet to accompany me, compelled me to run it and discover that I’ve stumbled upon something rather exceptional – definitely when it goes to Android games, but maybe even in a broader sense.

Developed by Dicesuki, a small studio which later created the highly-regarded Cinderella Phenomenon, and published for Android in July 2016, Locked Heart quickly became one of the highest-rated mobile VNs out there, gathering an impressive 4.9/5 score among Google Play users and a decent VNDB rating. Of course, standing out positively on a marketplace full of horrible shovelware and shameless cash-grabs might not be a huge achievement by itself – in the case of this small otome however, this enthusiastic response from the readers seems to indicate a bit more than just contrast from the absolute trash that dominates mobile platforms.

Definitively reading this befote Cinderella Phenomenon, it reminds me of the Three bears story (the one of the beds and soups), and I'll get all endings and Make a guide for it as always. :o)

The guide would be useful, because the official one on the developer's site doesn't always work - at least in one route, it skipped a choice that I think mattered after all, because I've got normal end after following the instructions to the letter. Lost any motivation to try again after that. :P

Apparently there is also a generic "no route" bad end that you get on the common path.

Also if you're willing to take mobile oelvn recommendations, this may interest you.

This is quite... Big, if description on the store page is worth believing. I'll check it out when I have an opportunity, I wonder what the business model is. :)

From what I've read from a review it is a "pay-for-content" type of model, "Game is initially free to play, but handles monetization differently: after a certain point, you’re invited to subscribe to the app to receive additional chapters, rather than paying to unlock specific choices in the body of the story. You can buy a monthly, quarterly, or half-yearly subscription, but they all are subscriptions, with recurring payments".

Yeah, and other thing is that the three stories are Multiple Route Mystery, so yeah, complicated. xoD

WHY IS THE TEXT OVERRIDING THE HEART ICON

TmQ8sto.gif

I'm sorry I'm the one to tell you that... But... The Heart is not actually an icon. It's just a background element.

I know things will never be the same now that you've learned the truth, but I hope you'll find the strength to forgive the Heart, and maybe even love it again one day. It never wanted to hurt you.
