Hmm, you might want to give Kira Kira a try. The whole band goes on tour theme felt somewhat more mature and realistic than the vast majority of moe blob VN's.
If drama is a plus for you, you can also try ef - a fairy tale of the two or Eden*. Both are very emotional and deal with some heavy themes.
Da Capo 2 and Clannad are also two nakige classics that have a good mixture of romance and drama and aren't already on the heavy utsuge side like the two previously mentioned Minori titles.

The problem is that this is still censorship when the full version isn't released.
All other localization companies offers the full version through a patch or on a different website. The only reason steam always has censored releases is because that's Steam's policy, and Steam is the biggest VN platform in the west.
But Moenovel doesn't offer the original in any way.
I am glad that they have at least (seemingly, we'll have to wait and see for sure,) stopped literally censoring anything from kissing to innuendos, but the problem still remains; they only localize eroge, then censor them and slap them on steam. Some people might be okay with having H-scenes removed, but that doesn't mean it's okay.
This is eroge we are talking about. If you don't want H-scenes in them, you're playing the wrong genre.
 
Please stop trying to make Moenovel look like the good guys here. They still censor their games, and they still ignore all fan feedback. If you're going to cover this game in the VNTS, please make a disclaimer saying it has been censored, and that supporitng them advocates that.
If people keep supporting Moenovel, they'll keep repeating the same shit over and over. The only way to make them stop is to cut off their money. Trying to tell them what the west wants hasn't worked. People have been doing that since If My Heart Had Wings launched. All they think about is money, and they get that when people keep on buying their censored crap.

When MangaGamer got involved with AliceSoft they had to start with Beat Blades Haruka from the Bronze Age despite wanting a newer (or any) Rance title, and when they had a short deal with Lilith, they just got some titles from the Stone Age (which might be a reason why their relationship ended soon). Fortunately, we didn't have to endure a title from the early Cretaceaus period - meaning pre 2000 - yet. 
So Japanese VN developers seem to be rather protective about their newer and better titles.

Man, 23 replies in just 4 hours - it's kind of clear where people's interests are lying in... 
Anyway, the presence of H-scenes strongly affects sales (just ask Minori about Supipara... or better not), so they are shoveled into every VN regardless of quality and if they are needed or not. There are definitely VN's with good H-scenes, but most of them are untranslated. And good art is a very important factor for good H-scenes, so if you don't have that even a good (ero) writer is in trouble.

Might be a matter of taste, but I found KnS2 not even remotely as dark and depressing as the first one. Much less gore and you can actually save people for a change.

I'm really tolerant if it comes to translations and barely complain about them, but even I think the translation of Chrono Clock was a mess, or at least certain parts of it.
The top offender is D.D's translation. She's a supposedly British girl who constantly throws English words in when she speaks Japanese. The translator therefore thought it would be a great idea to give the English readers the same 'feeling' by inverting the whole language and let her constantly throw in Japanese words when she speaks English. Too bad that an English speaking girl that constantly uses Japanese words will appear JAPANESE and not British!!! And since its clear from the whole context that she's British her whole dialog doesn't make sense anymore. It's beyond me how a translator could loose his complete common sense in such a way and come up with such a dumb idea.
Besides that, I disliked the crude translation of the protagonists narrative. He used the F-word so often that you could almost got the idea that the protagonist did grow up in the slums. Granted, I can't prove that the original Japanese text wasn't that way either, and I'm too lazy to look it up, but I highly doubt it since he was more of a spoiled rich-kid.
The rest was okay though, it's just the protagonist and D.D. that really got on my nerves.

I doubt a lot of people would have the time to play random demo's of games that, may or may not, get released in a few years. I think most people play demo's of games knowing that the game would eventually get released, to get a taste and see if it's worth purchasing. It'll suck if you play a fan tl demo of say dies irae, loving it but the game ends up not being popular and developers end up losing interest because of results of that very demo .
Personally things seem fine with fan tls now, they bring awareness to games and could potentially get purchased by companies like mangagamer or sekai. The possibility seems pretty good now, I already assume that projects like clover days, lover able, majo koi nikki, tsui yuri etc would end up getting picked up, maybe they already have . 
I wouldn't have been aware of those games if fan tl's didn't introduce them [oh like dracu riot and sakusaku 2] , i certainly wouldn't play a demo of those games if i wasn't sure they'll be out eventually. I think people [developers, fans]  do a good job promoting already, they have those conventions , sites like this, steam, vndb, social media etc. 
 

Complaining about Jast's slow release schedule is like complaining about death, taxes, and the weather.

Again, main issue here is Licensing. Sometimes it's just impossible to get all the rights necessary to have this accomplished. And if you can't get the rights you are liable to be sued. Do remember that these official companies are profiting of these releases and as such the original companies that put in work are able to sue if proper steps are not taken. 
Fans on the other hand don't have this handicap and can literally, LITERALLY, do whatever the fuck they want. I could, theoretically, add in Linkin Park music as the OST or add in functionality to the game that wasn't there before. And not only do I need not get the rights to either the company who made the game, I don't even need to bother with music licensing.
And in regards to ALL of this, if you are going to sit there and go "well I'm not going to spend money because there is a free, better, version out there" then do just that. I personally have bought many visual novels and never opened them purely because I played the fan translated releases when they came out but I do in fact want to support the developers. Just like games I used to pirate long ago I all have in either a digital or physical paid copy. If content is so important to you, get the fan translated edition, play the fan translated edition. But if you want to support the sales of a game you enjoy, go purchase it, regardless of which version you play.
Add to this is a person didn't even know of everything you are talking about they would still purchase the game, play it, and that's that. It's not like the company is going "Hey everyone buying this product, look there is a fan version out there that has a shitload more content then the one we put out...just saying."
If the customer doesn't know, the customer won't care. So you might give a crap because you know, but many others who actually buy the game might not know this and therefore don't care.

It was there, as well. You will notice that she had a tendency to pull out some... interesting expressions some Americans wouldn't even get.
Your counter-example doesn't work. For it to work, the situation must be analogous -- the guys in Dies Irae should speak the language the VN would be translated to for the example to be analogous. As German isn't English, this isn't the case.
 
We're asking for a solution for an impossible problem. If people speak English in Japan, as is the case in the translation (even if they're technically speaking Japanese), there is no way to differentiate it from the actual English language English people speak. What, then, is Japanese language in this strange world? Still Japanese? The actual English? Did English and Japanese swap in this universe?
Let's tackle this from another perspective: What if we tried to replicate the experience the Japanese had? Many believe this is the best way to localise a work.
The Japanese were face with a character who constantly used words in a language they didn't speak, yet were familiar with (English is an international language, and plenty of English words have been... incorporated into a Japanese person's vocabulary, even if with a skewed meaning). This situation is analogous to most of Chrono Clock's player-base. If you're playing a translation, it is likely you do not speak the Japanese language well, or at all. But if you're playing a Visual Novel, there's also a high chance you're familiar with Japanese media (maybe even know the occasional word). With all this in mind, the idea isn't bad.
Now let's look at D.D's character. Would it make sense for her to spew these random Japanese words? Considering she's a Japanese obsessed otaku, yes. Considering they're actually speaking Japanese written in English, no, since we don't know what Japanese written in Japanese represents. Too many questions to make sense of. Let's tackle it case by case.
1st - The UK speaks English, written in English, and the Japanese speak Japanese, written in English.
This may be the most natural assumption, but that completely removes Japanese from the script, and also creates the conflict: What happens when a Japanese character meets an English character -- which is the exact problem we're facing. If there is no way to discern Japanese from English, half of D.D's quirks are thrown out the window. As we want to avoid the experience being different between versions (English and Japanese), something else but similar must take its place, like overplaying the British side (and if she were American, then RIP translator). And this being the case... What IS the Japanese in the script? 2nd - The UK speaks English, written in Japanese, and the Japanese speak Japanese, written in English.
This would be the second most natural assumption, and D.D's use of Japanese may lead one to conclude this. Generally removes the problems, so long as the English reader accepts the English in this universe is not for them to understand. Given all this, had I been put in the position they were... I'd have likely done the same thing or try to make her use obscure British slang as often as possible -- though I'm not sure how feasible this is, because not only would it have to exist, I'd have to know it or be able to research it.
