Kindred Spirits on the Roof to be Steam's first uncensored eroge... kind of

MangaGamer's release of Kindred Spirits on the Roof will be released on Steam uncensored. According to several people in the industry, Valve has acknowledged the potential for adult titles on the platform and some people within the company are pushing to make that happen. Kindred Spirits will be the first uncensored VN release with sex scenes on the platform, which is pretty exciting. But why the "kind of" in the thread title? Well,Kindred Spirits isn't a full-blown eroge, it's kind of softcore. There are sex scenes, but the genitalia are obscured and it's like Skinemax-levels of porniness. That's still way more erotic content than any game on the platform, but it's not on the level of a standard bishoujo eroge. I see this as a start of a trend, though. If this doesn't go over too poorly among the userbase, perhaps Valve will be persuaded to release even more pornographic titles on the platform. What do you guys think? I think that MangaGamer stands to sell a lot of copies due to having the only actual pornographic title on the platform, even if it's softcore porn. Good on them for pushing boundaries. edit: Doddler claims there are other games already on the service that are more erotic but I can't really think of any off the top of my head.

I think its nice.

Tbh I would actually prefer that most VNs had sex scenes that actually felt like love between 2 people and not a porn scene lol.

Because it actually legitimizes the idea that love between 2 people can strengthen the bond between the player and them even further (in my opinion though)

I'm all for it, but I worry about what kind of attention it may draw. It's one thing for it to exist "in the shadows" but for it to be so accessible (well, admittly no less then a google search for porn)...it may cause some noise among moral knights and prudes.

I doubt it, as long as there are no rape/gore/tentacles etc.

People often forget that erotica ≠ porn. You don't really need to (and actually shouldn't) show genitals, if you aim for a higher quality work that touches on the sexuality as one of it's subjects. It's what discerns sacrum from profanum. I'm not saying there's no place for good ol' eroge-style porn, but it's not the kind of content creators should actually focus on in case of story-driven visual novels.

What we need are games with meaningful erotic content - one where it happens not just to please the readers, but have some impact on both the story, characters and people who play those games; leave something behind. The only thing I am concerned about, is that we propably don't have enough good writers to tackle it. It's really easy to create porn and extremely difficult to turn it into a touching story; a valuable form of artistic expression.

In any way, I'm rooting for all the people, who are trying to change the way we perceive erotic content in entertainment. I hope this will open up Steam to allow more 18+ content and push creators to strive for better quality, even if it remains a bit forced ("You can't have straight porn, but if the story's good enough we might actually allow it"). If that succeeds, who knows what might the future hold for us all. In any way, it's an interesting situation to follow and I can't wait to see the results, whatever they may be.

I could not possibly agree more with this.

I think the easiest way to start doing this is by getting rid of the sexual fetish ideology. People associate porn in the 2D universe with fetishes because none of it is real, therefore we can have the forbidden stuff (i.e. = lolicon material, incest). Erotic content doesn't need to appeal to fetishes, but can still be appealing nonetheless. Create a story about the beauty of a woman's body, or write something where sex is an expression of love rather than being horny.

And that's not to say that horny sexual scenes don't have their place. The real issue with all of this is that we are basing our idea of porn on what Japanese people think it entails. Japan has the least amount of sexual activity in the entire world, so why the hell should I believe Japan knows anything when it comes to doing anything sexual in nature? News flash, they don't. I doubt Japanese people even know how to give a proper blowjob. Yeah, I just said that.

Well this sucks. Prefer the all age really. It shows VNs don't need porn to exist. Pretty sad to see this is being allowed

"I don't like porn so nobody should be able to get it"

You can skip those scenes if you don't want them you know. However if you want them and they're not here you can't add them back yourself.

Well, considering Steam actually let them on they might actually be somewhat... tasteful? If anything, I consider that a much more healthy example than just blocking off erotic content altogether.

Or you can just buy the 18+ at any other digital shop. And Yes, you can add the porn back in some cases. For example Nekopara.

It kind of defeats the point of what valve wanted to do if they allow it. I just feel like Valve didn't even look at the game. Either way if they allow it they shouldn't reject other eroges.

I just feel it shines a negative light onto VNs  because most just add porn for the sake of selling their game instead of focusing on the plot.. And having it on a bigger distribution site like steam allows devs to milk it and create crappy Vn's... Winged cloud can be an example  (dev)

This is something I've been hoping for for a long time. I used to be worried about the impact this might have on the viability of more hardcore eroge, but these days I tend to think the overall growth of the VN market via Steam will more than make up for that. Even if we won't see euphoria or Sweet Sweat on Steam anytime soon, I'm pretty sure those titles will see an increase in sales outside of Steam simply because more people will be playing VNs and some of them will look for VNs on platforms other than Steam.

So this is great news.

Just like they allowed SG in the first place? I'd rather have some sort of a control system based on a proper set of principles, than allow mindless hordes to upvote everything, no matter how bad it is.

Here's the deal, though: if Yurirei-san gets on Steam and does well (most propably will, cause yuri), it will show devs it's actually worth to put effort into higher quality content as well. More devs might follow in their footsteps and we'll get more vn's, that are something more than a fucking excuse to show boobs. More devs will be encouraged to produce high quality 18+ content and most importantly, it will open gates for the japanese industry. I think we all want that, badly.

I also think Steam can actually live without Nukige.

I agree with what you say. I hope it works out that way.
