The Pidgeon VN REALLY did it...

Yeah... remember how everyone was afraid that the birdy-VN was going to ruin the future of VNs? Well unfortunately the game theorists just shouted to the hole world about it, ending with the phrase "dating Sims are weird...". greaaaaaaaaaaat....

And don't u guys find it weird that they always call them dating Sims and not visual novels? I'm beginning to forget the difference between them.

u don't have to watch the hole thing, since he only talks about it in the first 2 minutes...

PS: don't u find it jarring that they chose an episode about minecraft creepers over the use of dating-Sims in real life? I mean, i know the some people can be weird, but over 100,000... what is the world coming to...

I don't think anyone was seriously afraid that thing would ruin the future of VNs. Everyone who sees it will just most likely take the whole thing as "a game for the lulz" like goat simulator and flappy bird. If they even bother checking it out in the first place.

Well, its not like its going to change anyone's opinion about it. But it still makes me sad that I can't say I like reading VNs without people giving me weird stares.

You should be able to... Most people don't even know VNs exist in the first place, you should get mostly curious stares rather than weird ones.

Honestly?  I got over caring about other people's (irl) opinions years ago.  Though, I'm not stupid enough to reveal I'm playing games with erotic content to my family, since half are parochial Christians and the other half are... earthy people who wonder why I'm not married with seven kids.

I dunno about that, as i cant really name any "normal" VN that people know about, all of them just seem weird. The closest would be katawa shoujou, but even that looked weird before actually trying the game...

Obviously. We're niche, no one knows what the hell VNs are in the first place- you shouldn't be expecting them to know normal VNs.

Weird games get more attention, but no one seriously analyzes a genre just because of them. You won't say soccer games are stupid because of goofball, you won't say simulators are stupid because of goat sim, etc. In fact, any VN getting mainstream, even if it's one about birds is a great thing. Let's people know the genre exists, at least.

There is also a saying about how bad popularity doesn't exist. It's the same principle of why a bunch of celebrities do outrageous stuff for more attention- it doesn't matter if they're badmouthed like hell, they have more to gain by appearing in the news than they do by fading into quietness.

Point is, This is totally fine. I really can't see why the future of VNs are ruined just by a couple of odd ones standing out.

I don't think it really matters that much. I just look at that VN with a bit of an eye-roll then go back to playing Grisai no Kajisu. Don't think anyone, inside or outside of the community, genially cares about this game.

The reason I think people outside of the VN community refer to them as dating sims is just because most people outside of the community just don't really know nor care about the difference between dating sims, erogys and visual novels. And besides, why should they? I barely even know the lines between the three myself and I've been reading playing these games now for nearly two and a half years, so why should anyone with no interest in the medium bother to look it up?

For me it's like a little fly just buzzing around you all the time. When people refer to VN's as eroges or dating sims it just gives me a feeling similar to when people say gelati and icecream are the same thing. At least there are quite a few people I know who can tell the differences between them.

I'm sure if you tell people it was made in Japan they'll think it's normal.

Honestly this won't affect VNs in any negative way. If anything it'll be positive since it's another vn that made it to the west.

People will just see it as a joke most of the time and won't even bother formulating an opinion to generalize other games of the same genre since this one will be insignificant to them.

It's more of a gag than anything else.

People who take Hatoful Boyfriend as a serious dating sim have some fun thoughts. So yeah, people are just gonna roll their eyes and not take that comparison seriously. If they do without even looking it up... Well... They probably think Transformers is a mecha anime, with Michael Bay directing the live-action films for it. With Naruto being a cartoon.

I even believe he was joking when he was doing comparisons... Although he didn't need to make that comment if he was.

I'd get disowned if I did that.  Half of my family is extremely Catholic, so they'd flip out if they found out I was even just looking up info about anything with erotic content.  Hell, they get offended when they see girls wearing bikinis, no matter how revealing they are.  No joke.

I feel ya man :| I feel ya :|

I also thought it'd be best to hide it from my parents, but then the magazine about eroge I bought in Japan out of curiosity got into their hands - and it turned into surprisingly funny joke. Seems like my parents just expected this from Japan in the first place, which could be a problem in and of itself, depending on how you look at it. :D

But really, I think in the end it's just the problem of people being open-minded. It doesn't matter if there is a pigeon dating sim or not - it should be an undeniable fact that Japanese stuff is weird to other countries' standards, and that the majority of VNs are eroge. Thinking that a particular work is giving a bad impression might be just running away from that fact.

My parents really wouldn't have given a shit if they found out about this when I was under their care and they especially wouldn't care now, but I still like to keep this separate from not only my real life but I also keep this completely separate from the rest of my internet interactions. I use a totally different handle and email and all that on VN communities than all other communities. Dunno what to say, I guess I just feel a certain amount of shame for my hobby. I've mentioned eroge to them in passing but I would be ashamed if my long time internet buddies found out just how much of this stuff I read. I guess I'm weird in that I'm more afraid of them finding out than my family...

Might as well elaborate on my original statement.  My mom isn't Catholic (anymore, at least), but a decent part of both sides of my family are.  My mother is staunchly anti-porn, so I'd be in a pickle if she found my VN stash.  I've mentioned that I'm torrenting "translated Japanese games" and left it at that, and since nobody in my family has even heard of VNs, they won't be connecting the dots any time soon.

We should probably stop derailing this thread  :/  I can make a separate thread dedicated to talking about the subject if you guys want to talk about it with me and others.

If I ever mention "reading visual novels" as one of my hobbies to my friends I get blank stares, but I don't blame them since I myself barely discovered them earlier this year.

Then they ask me to explain and at best all I can say is "think of it as the same as reading a book, but with visuals (character sprites, CG's and backgrounds)"  :P

Aww surely if they're your long-time buddies surely they wouldn't mind  ><

i don't see this getting a western release as a problem of any sort after all as was pointed out now that anime and manga are a lil less on the fringe and people have come to know even just slightly what entertainment products from japan can be like they kinda expect it (not that its a positive thing that people automatically associate all otaku media with porn. but whatever).

as for the distinction between the genres of dating-sim, eroge, visual novel, adventure games etc. its not very important in the grand scheme of things, these categories all blend together any way , many visual novels are eroge, many eroge are dating sims, many dating sims can be classified bishoujo games. trying to worry over if someone is using the proper descriptor is pretty pointless after all the dividing lines between them are blurry at the best of times and completely invisible at other times.and since most people even gamers are unaware these forms of games exists you cant really blame them for getting terms like these mixed up.

Very few eroge are dating sims, especially nowadays. An incredibly small percentage is, actually. I guess the main issue is that the term "dating sim" gives off a feeling that the experience will be superficial and little more than a substitute for the real thing so that fat nerds can experience it. At least, that's what a lot of people think when they hear the words "dating sim". So it's sort of derisive when used to describe a romantic story that tries to be more serious.

Hatoful Boyfriend actually DOES have some sim aspects though, doesn't it?

The categories don't really blend. Games can blend them but that doesn't mean the lines between such categories are blurry. Dating Sims are sim games where you fiddle with stats, Visual Novels are a form of interactive narrative (kinetic novels are not,) Adventure games means you like exploratory and puzzle gameplay, Eroge means you like erotic content with your games. Games can have more than one of these tags because these are all different types of categories. For instance Eroge is a tag relating to content whereas a Dating Sim tag describes the gameplay mechanic. That's not to say games can't have more than one tag from the same category...
