"To each, their own", personally that's how i look at it. When those versus scenario's you mentioned appear, I don't really mind it if those arguments are about the VNs themselves, though sometimes people tend to start insulting and generalising people on a personal level, example: "f people that read moege, they're all ....".  People like different VNS, and i agree with you that they should be respectful of that at least. Honestly I don't even hate or dislike people that read sakura games, people find some value in it that i don't understand [i have guesses though], but that's fine.
Arguing about VN genres, distributor systems, translations, h-scenes etc is a good thing, it promotes discourse and involvement in a community. It also creates awareness, it causes people to research things for themselves, and learn new information on subjects they're not familiar with. People can think for themselves [if they want], they can form their own opinions about, say, "Is that translation as bad as they say it is", "are h-scenes really essential to this particular VN based on its themes". "should i trust sekai to deliver physicals at a reasonable time from the announced date?". Those arguments do provide good information at times.
I don't have a clear picture of how the VN community is as a whole since i only use fuwa for VN related things [its the only forum i use.], whatever I need to know is here and if i'm uncertain of something, there are people here that I can ask. The mods run a tight ship [i think], if people get attacked here, i trust that they'll take care of it, so it creates a cleaner environment for people to discuss what they want. If the vn community outside of fuwa is anything like here, i think that's pretty decent [i doubt it though, since this is the internet].
Fans as a whole are like a stereotype of an american high school in movies, there's always going to be various groups that are elitist about what they like, but there's also the majority of nameless students walking around, going to school, studying and going back home, not bothering too much about the fuss around them.

"Degeneracy"? That's an interesting choice of words. TBH, there's a lot of queer stories in the OELVN community because there's a lot of LGBT creators in it, but I can't think of many high-profile titles that would be actually that transgressive, other than Ladykiller in a Bind. More often than not games from events such as Yuri Game Jam are quite fluffy/tame TBH... And seriously, reading yuris not written by a middle-aged dude in Japan can be quite refreshing.

I think enjoyment and fascination is a state of the mind. While it's rare that you're going to come across exactly the vn you felt like reading, if you try reading a bunch of stories, you might get into a few of them, and that will be just as good.
The more stuff you enjoy, the more comparisons you can draw, which might help you enjoy other works.

    What even is good writing.
What's most popular for VNs are power fantasies and sex appeal, sure, but are those things worth less than other types of writing?
Because if they are it's not just VNs, power fantasies and sex appeal sell significantly more in all types of media, especially ones targeted at a younger audience, which western otaku mostly are since anime has only gained real popularity in the last decade over here and they gained that popularity precisely with kids and teens who started out by watching weeb stuff on tv.
Then there's also differences in how stories are told. You pick a random person that mostly consumes western media, and you know exactly what anime,  LN or VN they'd like. It's going to be stuff like fate stay night and zero, saya no uta, steins gate, legend of the galactic heroes and whatnot, because those stories are written like western media.
I tdon't like western media. I don't need more tightly paced show-not-tell dramatic stuff with 3deep5u themes and knowing exactly what type of plot twists are coming and when. Eastern storytelling is different (even when it's doing the whole 3deep5u thing) I enjoy that.
The predominant western writing styles and priorities are boring and shitty to me and I want it to stay as far away from me as they possibly can. Think a lot of weebs feel that way tbh.

Chronopolis got a reaction from Odenvard in How big a difference does it make for you to have voice acting in a VN?
For comedy or faster-paced VN's, it's great to have voice acting. It gives the thing more life. Also in important scenes the voice acting can provide a voice that you couldn't have imagined from the text.
Voice acting's never going to be able to save a bad story though.
For English works I almost always prefer no voice acting. It seems fake and not seamless like JP voice acting, iuuno.

Chronopolis reacted to Odenvard in How big a difference does it make for you to have voice acting in a VN?
    I'd say I have a pretty clearly defined opinion about voice acting;
If it's actually good, it can add quite a lot to the experience.
If it's anything less than good, or if it's too inconsistent, such as if side characters pop up much at all but are unvoiced (unvoiced protag is fine), it tends to detract (and distract) from the experience more than it adds.
Of course, while I don't know if I can honestly name any cases where a VN which had no voice acting would suffer from somehow gaining good voice acting, or any cases of VNs with good voice acting that would improve in the absense of voice acting anyways, but it's worth noting that voice acting is often expensive for companies who make any sort of game at all. As such, it's quite possible that a company could end up either funding the creation of any other parts of a game less due to including voice acting, especially if they realize they underestimated the cost of voice acting after they've already commited too much money to its inclusion. This is particularly likely for small/indie/new companies, who are also the ones who are hit hardest by making this mistake.
With that in mind, I would say that VNs made by a big company that has less to worry about with regards to the risks of including voice acting benefit the most from it; There are limits to how much any one part of a VN can benefit from additional funds, due to things like artists/writers not being physically capable of producing more than a certain amount of material in a given amount of time no matter how much they're payed, and a big company is far more likely to actually run into those limits. Plus, they'll be more likely to actually be able to pay for good voice actors.
Meanwhile, VNs made by small/indie/new companies not only don't have as much to gain from voice acting (there's more risk of them not being able to get good enough voice actors for voice acting to actually be a good thing for the VN), but they also risk making other parts of the VN worse; Whether that be due to mistakes made when determining how much they should spend on voice acting leading to other parts of the game needing to be rushed to make the game profitable, or due to intentional planning which nonetheless leads to less resources (funds/possibly time due to available funds) being commited to other parts of the VN. Because of this, VNs made by these companies may even be said to indirectly benefit from not including voice acting.

Back when Fuwanovel was really active back in 2013, 2014 and 2015; we had topics like this all the time. Like 5+ a day sometimes, lol. Honestly I miss those days of Fuwa. It really shows how much the forums have slowed down that we only get like 1 of these threads a day. But I'm glad that people are trying to keep the forums a live. Its kind of like keeping a fire alive. And damn, the fire of fuwa used to be raging!
But yeah, one of the problems I had when the forums was that active was that I spent a lot more time talking about VNs then actually reading them, lol.

So as some people know, I co-host about visual novels podcast monthly-ish. We have a segment towards the end where a user can "shill" a VN you like for 2-3 minutes. Basically at the bare minimum you just briefly talk about what the visual novel is and why you like it. We're interested in getting some more shills lined up and ready. Other things to take note off if you want to contribute your own shill:
    * Leave a 3-5 seconds of silence at the beginning and/or the end of the recording
    * Please have the recording be a .wav file
    * Make sure there's no background noise as you record
    * It doesn't have to have an English Translation. But if it doesn't make sure you note that one doesn't exist (yet).
    * You can't shill a VN that's already been done before which includes:
    -The House in Fata Morgana
    -MajiKoi
    -Yumina the Ethereal
    -Princess Evangile
    -Root Double
    -Tomoyo After
    -Little Busters
    -Sunrider
    -Umineko series
If you're interested PM me a 2-3 minute-ish .wav file and we can work with it.
If you want an idea of how previous shill segments work you can go to our YouTube channel. Each video has one shill each and I put a timestamp in the description.

You have to donate to Fuwanovel or be a mod to be able to use cover photos.  IIRC, it only became possible after one of the multiple IPB updates in the past year, and the only reason it's locked to mods and donators is so that they can receive something (other than warm fuzzies) for helping the site.
If you're a mod or have backer status, you'll see this cover photo option when you look at your profile:
Just a warning, it has very specific image resolution and file size requirements, and is a bit of a pain to get it to accept an image.

Chronopolis reacted to Dergonu in Dergonu's top 10 dark VNs to read before you die (Updated)
I'm a big fan of dark themed games, and feel like there aren't enough lists around on Fuwanovel with "dark VN" recommendations, so I figured I'd make one myself. Know that this is just my opinion, and since I haven't played all the dark VNs out there, there is a good chance I missed some good ones. Some of the choices on the list are very well known, while others might be completely new to you. I hope this mix of different titles makes this list helpful for both people who are completely new to dark VNs, and those who have already played many.

    1. Chrono Box
    Status: Untranslated
    Difficulty: Hard
This is a denpa mystery game with superb writing and plot. If there is any dark themed game I'd recommend you play right now, it's this one. Since the element of surprise is a huge factor in enjoying this game, I don't want to get much into the story. For this particular game, I urge you not to look up any CGs or any summaries before reading. Just start reading, and let the VN do its magic. My favorite part of this game was honestly just the insane twists and turns it throws at you throughout the story, and the fantastic ending that just wraps the game up perfectly. As far as dark themed games goes, this is truly one of the best ones out there.

If you are interested in knowing "how dark" the game gets, I'll put some info on that below. No real spoilers, but for those who wants to read it blind, don't open this. (I do personally recommend you read it blind, but I figure some people might be a little interested in the type of content in the VN before reading.)

    2. Maggot Baits
    Status: Translation in progress
    Japanese difficulty: Hard
Maggot Baits feels like a bizarre mix of a dark chuunige and a guro nukige. But hell, it works. With a pretty solid story, good writing and enjoyable action scenes, Maggot Baits definitely deserves a spot high up on this list. But, it certainly is not a game for everyone. Despair is a keyword in this game. There aren't really any good guys in the story. It takes place in a city abandoned by laws and government, where crime and chaos rules. Torture and guro is so common in this game, I think it's pretty much impossible to enjoy the game if you are completely turned off by those things. Even though the story is good, like I said, it's impossible to escape from the guro element, which is present in like, 90% of the H-scenes, (and many of the action scenes,) so this one is probably a bit too extreme for some. But yeah, if dark stuff is your cup of tea, this is pretty much made for you. (And a TL is in the works, so English only fans of dark games, rejoice!)

    3. Shiniyuku Kimi, Yakata ni Mebuku Zouo
    Status: Untranslated
    Difficulty: Easy/ Intermediate
(The writing is quite simple, but certain narration uses very big words.)
Similar to Maggot Baits, Nikuniku is a game that is difficult to enjoy if you hate guro. The game's story is really good, and the music and writing combines well to create a very immersive atmosphere. But, at the end of the day, guro scenes are so common in this game, you can't read it without going through tons of them. (And skipping them will mean you lose out on some pretty important exhanges between characters, that becomes important to the game's true end.) Nikuniku is a horror/ mystery, which clearly draws some inspiration from vampire lore and stories. It's an interesting read with a satisfying true ending. A very solid dark themed game.

    4. Nemurenu Hitsuji to Kodoku na Ookami -A Tale of Love, and Cutthroat-
    Status: Untranslated
    Difficulty: Hard
With the same writer as Maggot Baits, "Yourou" is a brilliantly written story about the dark underbelly of Tokyo. The main character is a mysterious serial killer/ hitman, who works for the biggest yakuza boss in Tokyo. He is ailed by a strange case of insomnia, that can only be cured by taking a life. After killing someone, he can finally get a good night sleep.
One day, his life changes drastically, when he meets the cute, and crazy young girl, Azami. Azami and the main character, who is only known by aliases, or "me", form a strange relationship, and the two soon grow completely reliant on one another. The existence of a strange "rumour" quickly turns their lives upside down, as several different big players in the yakuza and other shady organizations around Tokyo clash in a sea of blood and death.

This game is all about despair and darkness, just like Maggot Baits. But, unlike Maggot Baits, this is set completely in the real world, which makes some of the gruesome things that goes down in this story even more impactful.
The game is primarily story driven, with a range of dark H-scenes thrown in the mix to really underline the darkness of the game's story. It's rather short, and the battle scenes are brillliantly written. Truly deserving of a high rank on this list.

    5. Tokage no Shippo Kiri
    Status: Untranslated
    Difficulty: Easy/ Intermediate
(Pretty simple writing, a few big words here and there due to the nature of the story.)
Tokage no shippo Kiri is a tragic love story story about a pair of teenagers who are standing on the edge of insanity, forced to face their own mortality. It's a very "psychological" story, which really gets in your head. It's difficult to sum up what this is about in just a few sentences, so I'll link my review of the game instead, where I talk more in detail about the game's story etc. (Without spoiling it, of course.)

    6. Euphoria
    Status: Translated
A pretty obvious pick. Euphoria is a pretty solid dark game. It has an interesting story, and a nice variation of dark H-scenes, without getting too extreme like some of the games above. This is a pretty good gateway into the world of dark VNs, and since it's TLed, it's a good starting point.

    7. Natsu no Kusari
    Status: Untranslated
    Difficulty: Intermediate
In terms of realistic dark games, this is your go to pick. Though, this might also be one of the things that drives some people away from the game. This is a very realistic rape story, that can truly mess with your head, so it's going to be a complete hit or miss, depending on your stance on the themes in the VN. I have heard some people praise this as one of the best VNs they have ever read, and others say they hated it. It's not a very long game, so in the end, you should give it a try for yourself to see if you'll enjoy it or not.

    8. Mugen Renkan ~Chijoku ni Mamireshi Fushiki no Rinbu~
    Status: Untranslated
    Difficulty: Easy
If you are looking for a VN with a nice mix between an emotional story and twisted H-scenes, look no further than Mugen Renkan.

    9. XX of the dead
    Status: Untranslated
    Difficulty: Easy
XX of the Dead is one of the coolest, most unique, and bizzare VNs I have ever played. Your choices have a huge impact on the story, as you essentially choose who lives and dies in a very large cast of characters with each choice you make. After a zombie virus breaks out, the main character and a group of other survivors are trapped in a school, where they have to fight to survive. But, these are no ordinary zombies. Instead of craving human flesh, they seek pleasure. They mutate in unique ways, growing tentacles and such, which they use to... well, rape humans to death, lol. As silly as this sounds, the story is actually really cool, and the suspense is kept up through most of the game, as the characters try their best to hang on in this messed up world of... tentacle zombies. It has a nice variation of endings, depending on what choices you make through the story. Overall, a super weird, but really entertaining, dark VN.

    10. Beat Blades Haruka & Beat Valkyrie Ixseal
    Beat Blades Haruka, Status: Translated
Beat Valkyrie Ixseal, status: Untranslated, Difficulty: Intermediate
While the writing is fairly simple, the need to understand the game's gameplay interface does bump it up from easy to intermediate.

    Beat Blades Haruka:
Although this game's, story isn't that impressive, in terms of dark games currently TLed it is definitely among the better. It has a huge roster of different dark H-scenes.
Honestly, that's about it for this one. I felt like mentioning it because it's honestly a pretty good nukige, but if you're looking for a good story and interesting characters, look elswhere. (I will admit, a few of the bad endings are actually pretty cool, but they are way too short for my taste.) It also has gameplay, which is a hit or miss depending on your stance on gameplay in VNs. I tend to dlislike gameplay in VNs, but I will admit, I did like it in this one. (During my first playthrough, at least.)
    Beat Valkyrie Ixseal:
Ixseal is similar to Beat Blades Haruka, just... better. Its story is much more interesting, the protagonist is a massive step up from the useless protagonist in BBH, and the gameplay has been refined.
I have written a review of the game, so if you're interested in some details about the game, check that out here.

    Honourable mentions:

    Sukui no Serenade
    Status: Untranslated
    Difficulty: Intermediate
Bug System's first game, and another interesting, dark themed VN by them. Although the story isn't as solid as Nikuniku's, it does have some interesting horror/ mystery elements. This is definitely closer to the nukige tag than Nikuniku, and it's also shorter, but still a game worth picking up if you like VNs with horror/ mystery elements. (With lots of dark H mixed in.)
    Kami sama no game
    Status: Untranslated
    Difficulty: Intermediate
This VN is pretty similar to Euphoria. It's about a group of people trapped in a mysterious underground facility, where they have to complete obscene challenges to surivive. Well, kind of. This game has a pretty different set of rules, setting it aside from Euphoria in structure. (Ohh, those stupid rules made my head spin, lol.) I'm not even going to try to explain the rules now, as it would just be confusing, but just know that it's a similar death game to Euphoria, but with some interesting twists because of the difference in the structure of the game. In terms of dark scenes, it's quite the solid pick.
    Ryakudatsusha no Inen
    Status: Untranslated
    Difficulty: Easy/ Intermediate
Although this game has some pretty big flaws, it is a pretty solid dark nukige. The biggest problem is though, at times it doesn't feel like it's meant to be a nukige at all. It was like the writers couldn't decide on whether it should be a pure nukige, or just a dark, story-driven game. The result was... this. It has some seriously good dark H-scenes, giving off strong nukige vibes, but then it also has hints of a good revenge story, that wants you to get invested in some of the characters. (Even though the nukige elements tell you the opposite.) If this game actually commited to just one of its two "genres", it would have been on the list, instead of this section. Another issue is that this is meant to be the prequel to a story-driven game, so that is another reason why it's a bit hard to brush it off as just a nukige. Still, if you can look past that chaotic mix of genres, it's a pretty solid read with some cool characters.
    Kutsujoku
    Status: Untranslated
    Difficulty: Easy
One of the most recent games on this list. Well, didn't make it on the list, but in the thread, at least. It's a story about a guy who suddenly obtains the power to control people's bodies with his mind. He then uses this ability to rape hot girls. That's it, lol. Despite essentially just being hentai.jpg, the solid art and nice H-scenes made me put it in this section, simply because it's a pretty high quality rape nukige. It also has more meat to it than most similar games, so if you're going to go with something like this, I'd recommend checking this game out.

Majo to Tsurugi to Sen no Tsuki
    Status: Untranslated
    Difficulty: Intermediate
A solid nukige, with a cool story and pretty good writing. It's about a group of magical girls, who fight against evil beings spawned by black magic, evilised, threatening to destroy the world. The action scenes in the game are nothing super special, but can be pretty enjoyable at times, especially towards the end. The biggest strength of this game is the genuinely interesting origin of the evilised, and the story of the main character and her inner conflicts. She is an artificial being, created by the soul of another human, and she is meant to just be turned off again once the evilised are defeated. But, since she has a soul of her own, she grows more and more reluctant to the idea of just disappearing once the fight is over.
The art is also pretty nice, and the game offers a big variety of dark H-scenes. You can also choose to avoid most of the dark scenes for the story by playing just the true ending first, then going back for the bad ends after, if you want.
Rettou Kan ~Yuuryoushu no Mii mo Kokoro mo Kowasu Rettoushu~
    Status: Untranslated
    Difficulty: Easy
(With the exception of a decent amount of slang, and some annoying katakana words.)
In terms of pure "darkness" in the form of H, this game is your #1 pick. While many of the previous games have had good stories, this is just a pure nukige, without any light at the end of the tunnel. The only focus of this story is the main character and his group of thugs, as they rape and torture an angel and a demon. That's it, the end. It has some of the better dark scenes I have read in a VN like this, so if you're just out for some straight up guro porn, look no further. (While we're at it, I'll also mention Dustmania Grotesque, which also qualifies for this particular role, but isn't as good as Rettou Kan. That being said, Dustmania is TLed, so for the English only crowd, you can check out that for a pure guro nukige.)

Chronopolis got a reaction from Mr Poltroon in Sol Press announces 'Newton and the Apple Tree'
Took a brief look. Most of it is translated good, but there are a few mistakes in the difficult parts. But I don't think it would hurt anyone's enjoyment of the game. I'm glad they listened to feedback and improved the translation quality.

So, I finally finished Caucasus.  This was the one VN from Innocent Grey I still wanted to read, even if it's in Japanese. Since it had a considerably lower rating than the Kara no Shojo series I did expect some weaknesses, although I wasn't really sure what they might be. Well, I was about to find out soon enough when I started reading.
Caucasus has a lot in common with the last Japanese VN I read, Hyakki Ryouran no Yakata. So much in fact, that I'd say the latter was at least inspired by the former. In both VN's the protagonist is a university student in folklore that stumbles into a mysterious mansion by accident where strange things are happening. Though here you're accompanied by a girl instead of being alone. But there's also a wedding ceremony going on, in this case between the youngest daughter of the Nanatsuki family - Shion - and her fiance Rokuyou.
An interesting thing about Caucasus was that some tags indicated that it might have some supernatural elements. Though, having read it now, this assumption was wrong. That's not saying that the tags were wrong, I just interpreted them in a different way. Without spoiling too much, the story is inspired a bit by a certain historic person with the name Elisabeth Báthory.

Caucasus is a typical case of making one step forward but two steps backwards. While IG's previous VN Kara no Shoujo had some detective gameplay elements, it was still mostly a VN with some investigation scenes at certain points. In Caucasus they decided to go full out with the detective gameplay and combine it with the map location choices. That means there are now frequent map movement sections where you can freely decide where to go, and every location can investigated and every person questioned. For each of this sections this can be done multiple times until a timer runs out. While this system might be great for detective enthusiasts, there are unfortunately so many possible things to do and consider now that it made the VN literally incomprehensible without using a guide. Actually, it made me think countless time about the recent thread about VN's with too many choices, since this was certainly a prime example for such a case.
They also had the glorious idea to give almost every girl a happy ending. While the idea sounds great in theory, the execution was 'questionable' to say the least. The usual strategy to win a girl in a VN is to try to spend as much as possible with her. Technically that's also the case here, just not really the way you'd think how. So in order to win a girl in Caucasus you have to... question her. No kidding, during the investigation sequences you not only have to investigate locations, you also have to pay your chosen one a visit, usually about ~2 times and just do nothing or question her about the murder case. Usually there's at least a slice of life sequence to get to know the girl even in other VN's from Innocent Grey, but not here. That was really, really lazy from IG.

Furthermore, although you can get most girls there are technically still just two endings, not counting the bad ones. The normal one and the true one. The normal one can be gotten for Akane, Narumi, Ai, Venio and Shion while the true one can be Venio, Shion and another one I don't want to spoil here. Though Shion is not really winnable, at least in the true ending. So if you want to really get all the endings for each girl you have to replay an insane amount of investigation sequences since you can't just skip them. Overall, the best is to decide for one girl for each ending and just get a 100% save to get the rest of the CG's.
That's not to say it would be all bad. The plot is interesting, and the characters look and act authentic and the story sections are well told even if they are far too often interrupted by investigation sequences. There's also a large story block told towards the end through a book which should have better been revealed bit by bit during the story instead. The story also isn't as grim as Kara no Shoujo and you can save pretty much every girl which was nice. On the other hand, the infamous perpetrator scenes were missing and just replaced by a few H-scenes which dragged the thrill and suspense a bit down. The art also has IG's great trademark art style.
Overall, I think it's still a good story VN even if it's clearly weaker than Kara no Shoujo. I'd say it's roughly on par with Cartagra even if both have different strengths and weaknesses. In case of Caucasus the main weakness is without question the detective gameplay. They should have skipped or at least reduced it a bit and flesh out the story further instead.
Heroine rankings: Narumi > Souko = Shion > Venio = Ai > Akane
    Overall rating: 7.5/10
I also tried two more nukige from Atelier Kaguya. The first one being Konomama dato Otouto from Honkytonk Pumpkin which was far too fetishy and overall the weakest title from this particular team so far (5.5/10). And the second one was Baku Ane 2 from Bare & Bunny which was kind of okayish even if I expected more (6.5/10). I hope the new Shigokare will be better.

On the story front the next two VN's I will try are Reminiscence from Tigre Soft and Haruru Minamo ni! from Clochette. I hope the former will be better than its predecessor Akatsuki no Goei while the second one will be my first VN from Clochette, so I'm eager to see how it turns out.
And yeah, I'm still trying to finish Shin Koihime † Eiyuutan anytime soon. I really hate that you're supposed to be in a relationship with literally everyone. It's almost as bad as in Moeshuden. Maybe not just as bad, since some routes actually focus on a certain girl, but others are just a huge clusterfuck.
