Quite ironic that this thread had been active for a few days with the title 'Dropped' lol, even though I'm the one who bump this.
Anyway while both side did have some valid opinion, I would say that saying that the official translation is better than fan translation is not quite right to me - even though it might be the truth, because for some case there's even a chance where fan translation is better than official one (Cross Channel anyone? And yes I understand that both version did have faults). Besides I would say that most people wouldn't care the difference in quality anyway, or rather they only care whether they understand the story or not with the available translation. So perhaps what I can say is that people would still understand the story even with the less than average translation (Not MTL), but even high class translation wouldn't be able to save the inherently bad story.
So yeah, what I would like to think is that both of fan and official translation did probably have same situation with some translator is probably better than most of the other one, and we also know that some official translator did have started as fan translator, or in the other word I wouldn't fully agree with the saying that official translation is better than fan translation or something like that effect. Feel free to disagree with that, but in the end I would say that both side did have some merit and that's final.
Back to topic, while we still didn't have the update at least the project here did grab attention from Kazamatsuri (KEY fan community) so at least it's good enough I guess. Here's the Twitter from Kazamatsuri below.

Chapters 1 and 1.5 have been patched. I know it's not much given how long this took, but coupled with the interface and the titles and the credits etc, I'll be going a lot faster now. Maybe!

Like them or not, official MTLs are a notable release that people are going to engage with. There is value in chronicling their release both from a historical perspective, while also potentially serving as a warning to anyone who sees the release in the wild. Like, when NarutoVegetaXxX over on hongfire or what have you whips out a machine tl of a VN in a day, the information that this happened is not useful or interesting to many (if anyone). Adding those kinds of releases to vndb would only increase their exposure. But when Cuffs partners with DMM to sell a machine translation of Your Diary on Steam, that information is inherently much more interesting. And by tracking it on vndb, we can hopefully warn people of its quality.
That said, I choose not to list any MTLs on Fuwanovel VNTS regardless of whether they're official or not (or any extremely shoddy TLs in general). I see VNTS as serving a different purpose, though. I don't wish to give them any sort of recognition in VNTS whatsoever.

Fan TL's are on the decline because so many localization companies have sprouted up, taking up a lot of works that VN consumers are passionate about. But to talk about the quality of releases when so many fan-TL projects are re-TLs of poor quality official releases is pretty comical. As a whole, fan-TLs have always been more polished than their official release counterparts because of the motivational discrepancy. Fan TLs passionately want their work to best represent the novel, official TL's tend to just want to make a quick buck, which is why so many are released with what seems like not even an editing pass from a native speaker and certainly not a TLC.

Translation got up to around 900 lines this week. Really proud of the guys for keeping this rate up. The second pass edit for the prologue patch should be done soon enough and the patch itself will ideally be out in the very near future, so look out for that.
We are still looking for a permanent TLC to work on this project. Please PM me if you're interested in working as a TLC for this project.
That's all for this week. See you all later.

I might have a little ahead of you here because people keep telling me inside stuff but rest assured that kicking their marketing staff made them resign vital key members that need to backup all these projects they assimilated. They might only have kicked the marketing staff but theres other people who left them including contractors like Ebihimes. Sekai is kind of on their last leg now and while they might not die out, they have a big problem now and have to rehire. Also the seperations makes them save if you calculate correctly at least 200000 bucks a year (8 employees at ~22000$/year). They could have some excess money for big project now but the last thing you want is dovac managing the twitter account. Just no.

Also, they have done very cool stuff in the last few days. Including giving us a meaningless block on twitter and likely backing their own kickstarters. w

Well, there goes the neighborhood.  I wouldn't be surprised if they respond to this by launching more Kickstarters, it brings in a chunk of money up front in exchange for a lot more hassle down the road.  And obviously they're hurting for money.  Companies that aren't hurting for money don't do this.  And wiping out the ENTIRE marketing team is a very questionable long term move.
Look on the bright side: If worst does come to worst, Jast USA has a long history of license rescuing titles from bankrupt localization companies.  There's a decent chance they could clear Sekai's backlog by 2030.  Perhaps the early 2030's.

Plain experience doesn't make you better. Constant practice does.
If you'll focus only on efficiency (and that's what industry requires), you will stop improving at a certain point, your main task becoming to deliver content instead. You won't have time for improvements or experimenting. Many professionals get stuck at this - they reach a certain level of proficiency and stop evolving afterwards. Becoming complacent leads to leniency. Leniency leads to routine and routine results in mistakes.
Professional TL's aren't better at all. This industry is very hermetic - the same people who used to do fan TL's in the past are currently professionals working for large publishing companies. If anything, publishers at the moment are prodding the grounds checking how far they can get away with producing as lousy releases as possible an still charge the same amount of money. It's irrelevant whether one of the translators or editors does a decent job, if the rest - especially those in charge - are a bunch of incompetent people, with sights set on the prospect of quick gain with least effort included... and it shows.

    Agree 100%.
    It definitely isn't.
I'm not sure what you would be looking for, if not experience. Most translation jobs I look at just ask for JLPT N1 or equivalent which just isn't satisfactory.
    Also nice post count.

Exactly. And now here comes one important reason why some TLers and editors aren't good. Lack of exposure to the language/languages they are working on. Many wannabe TLers (and editors too by the way) don't read enough stuff in general and aren't exposed to the language/languages they are working with. So no, just working on a fan project by itself isn't enough. These people need to be exposed to lots of text in languages they are working (i.e. they need to read lots of Japanese and/or English texts and aim for comprehension). Also, writing... these people need to learn how to write a sentence in the target language. Many fanTLs that we label as bad just have terrible English (they don't neccesarily have to be a bad TL).
Yes, experience certainly helps, but it's not the core trait I'd be looking for if I were to hire someone (if I were a localization company, that is). And I don't think 99% of time someone would outperform someone else just with experience. Those who strive to improve will also attempt to learn their job, not just keep doing it mindlessly.

I guess I kinda implied that. My main point was basically that mediocre TLs would become the norm again, while the quality nowadays is better than it used to be.

This is an important point I think. Next time someone tries to translate Cross Channel, they should do it in Trump-speak. No more problems with that complicated prose and snobbish nuance.
