There is a reason I no longer review Winged Cloud titles. They deserve zero free publicity.

    What the hell happened.
Kanon. Simple little old VN by Key.
    1) One of the best protagonists ever. Sarcastic, no bullshit, no pandering to stupid airheads, normal guy.
    2) Humour on par with Muv Luv Extra (some similiarities in randomness) and Majikoi. I twice nearly cried of laughter and countless times laughed out loud (in only 3-4 hours of reading!)
    3) Choices system. It's great. It works perfectly. I can choose if I want protag to be a meek asshole who only smiles to everybody, or I can choose him to be direct, honest almost assholish Greatest Protag Ever. Quick example. Girl is helping him unpack his boxes after he moved to a new house. Protag is saying in his narration that she abrely did anything. Girl is happily asking if she was helpful. Choice 'Yeah, you were' or 'No, you were more of a hindrance'. Sucha a great choice. Such an enjoyable system.
    4) Awful, awkward, crooked art. And I love it. It's great. It's awful, but great. If it makes any sense.
    5) Great 'just one more line' syndrom. It's 4:20 at night here I need to wake up at least at 10, but I just can't stop reading!

I love it. LOVE it. Haven't feel such a joy from VN (I felt a lot of incredible emotions, but dread or utter sadness from FataMorgana is not exactly 'joy') since I read Majikoi. ^^

Like Kaguya, my tastes when it comes to H can be a bit dark, so I tend to like H-manga when I just want to be turned on, and rarely rely on VNs for that. I do like reading nukige, but mainly just because I find them entertaining in general. (Like Boob Wars, Beat Blades Haruka, XX of the Dead and other games which put serious effort into creating the game world, despite being mainly focused on H.)
Still, I prefer having H content in VNs, even if they are long, story driven games. Just like sanahtlig said, H content can be a good tool to show strong bonds between characters. This should be built up in the story, and it should feel relevant, (meaning 18+ content being put in a game after, simply because it can isn't really ideal. This can work too, but it has to at least feel somewhat relevant. An example being Eden*, which had H added in later on as a DLC type thing, and still made it work.) Sex is a completely normal, natural thing in human relationships, and it can be used in stories to achieve many different things without making it into cheap porn.
For instance, H can also be used for the shock factor, which can achieve a lot in building dark settings and stories.
As an example, (spoilers to Grisaia no Kajitsu:)
I could name a million different examples, but my main point is simply that H can be quite a good tool in even heavily story driven games, and it can achieve many different things, not just cheap fanservice. So in my opinion, H and story aren't mutually exclusive but can very often work nicely alongside each other.

I like games where ero is an integral part of the game concept, yet the ero-scenes themselves are only a small part of the experience.  Good ero-scenes require developing a bond between the player and the heroine, together with appropriate buildup of sexual tension.  The story and ero should synergize, not exist independently or be at odds.  School Days HQ is the example I'd hold up of this synergy of story-driven drama and erotic scenes in action.

Well, I finally got around to finishing Tokage no Shippo Kiri, and damn, it was pretty darn good. I definitely have to get around to playing the fandisk soon.
The game was really unique, and very interesting. I was expecting a rather shallow guro nukige, and got a tragic love story instead, which was really cool. The game was well written, the art was very nice (and damn, it had so many CGs considering it's length... Cyclet really pulled out all the stops in the CG/ art department for this one.) The characters were great, especially Shuu and Monobe, (that crazy bitch, lol.) The plot twists in the game kept taking me by surprise, and the dark atmosphere mixed with the romance was a very interesting combo.
The game overall just left me very satisfied with the way things were wrapped up in the routes, and I liked how you kind of have to play all the routes to truly understand reasons behind the characters' actions etc. (I was actually considering skipping Manaka's route. Glad I didn't, as the game would have felt a hell of a lot less impactful without it.)

I'm really liking these short Cyclet games. There is still a few that I haven't played yet that look interesting, so I'll have to get around to doing those.

seems i fail to get how having japanese writers automatically means the title(s) will be of good, or satisfactionary quality, seriously i just dont get it. them stemming from a specific nationality does in the end mean shit, because it solely depends on one having talent/skills or lacking these, regardless where he/she hails from; plus we all know there´s also a more than large amount of truly bad writers roaming the lands of nihon, so yeah that´s that. no idea why or when this screwed up perception came up of anything japan being superior by default, be it voice acting, writing, settings or whatsnot. sure, if included does make it apparently more easy to appeal/being marketed, but works such as valhalla, most stuff by mouse or others whom are still bend on using their own brains and ideas, despite common believes, keep proving them delusionists wrong.

edit: it´s undoubtably a right step in the more right direction when starting to hire writers who actually are ones, not just some clueless weaboos trying to come up with something, without knowing anything.

edit2: and always those same hollow and borderline dishonest excuses, like "we didn´t want to make the setting japanese at the beginning, but it does fit the story better", "the op is a japanese one, because it does fit the story better", "they have japanese names, because it gives off a more authentic vibe". holy hell please stop. just admit the sole fucking reason is for the product to appeal to a more broad audience aka putting a possible increase of sales before originality/quality. seriously those are just abunch of self-apologetic excuses to somehow justify emulating the popular, instead of try gambling abit and coming up with real works of their own. no matter what, oelvns will always stay oelvns and never ever turn into their japanese pendants, forwhy it´s the very nature of oelvns, because they are created by non-japanese studios in the first place, defining them as such. on another note what´s even the point in making oelvns when its devs start going for japanese artists (writers/voice acting/visual-artists)?

English is extremely easy to learn. Russian is very easy. German is easy once you grasp the grammar basics.... so nope, you're wrong. Learning *certain* languages might be difficult, but learning new languages isn't; it's a matter of appropriate mindset.

Shigure Sora - 'A young man attending Shiromine Private School.  His emotions are out of sync to some extent with the average human being.  He frequently ridicules himself as a 'defective human', but that is just the truth, not sarcasm.  In opposition to his delicate and sensitive outer appearance, he hides a brutal aggressiveness within.  Normally, he uses his father's inherited glasses (fake) as a filter, but he has long-since accepted his own violent nature.   He is the possessor of of a bloodline that is rare even amongst the Enja (demon hunters), and his hobbies are housework and hunting demons.'
~I don't understand that stuff... you know, falling in love or dating?
Above is a rough translation of the Getchu character profile.  It isn't far off, but I thought I would add a few things in.  Sora literally only has one moral... obey his contract.  To him, contracts, whether verbal. written, or otherwise, are to be prioritized above all other things.  He lacks most of the softer emotions (the closest he gets to love is obsession or an animalistic attachment) and he really enjoys ripping demons, humans, and other things apart.  He frequently refers to himself as a 'beast', and that description isn't really that far off, since his motivations tend to be very... primal.  He does have a sense of humor, but it tends to take up residence in the realms of Sarcasm and the Macabre.

So real quick let me make a fool of myself. The story begins in my Kindergarten class, which had like 24 kids in it, it was a Monday (I know this because my Grandmother always took me to school on Monday) Anyway it was a Monday, but it was a special Monday! The teacher, or should I say "teachers" (since we actually had two) had made and brought cupcakes (for those who could have them) and muffins (for those that couldn't)     Anyway so I, being the socially weird child that I was, came up with this childish reasoning for cupcakes and muffins. So little me sitting there in his little chair thinking he had just solved every mystery ever, jumps up and hushes the other students. For some reason I got really into it and I spoke in a hushed voice, "I understand these snacks now," Little me whispered, "Muffins are bigger and tougher and they tend to suck, kind of like boys?" Kids laughed but I continued, "And cupcakes are generally smaller, sweeter, and they can be cute, sort of like girls?" By now everyone was rolling on the floor and little me stood there looking smug and all that. Anyway after all that time my friends always remembered what had happened that day and the nickname McMuffin came into play, eventually it evolved into StuffiMcMuffinz and it stuck.
Anyway sorry for the story it just felt right you know?
To wrap it up quickly before I drone on like the old man I am, Hi I'm McMuffin, StuffiMcMuffinz, Muffin, or just whatever you decide to call me, Nice to become a part of a community built on something that brings me joy.

Plus additional damages pending appeal. Disgusting piece of journalism and journalists do need to know there's a line that shouldn't be crossed. But the number of quality journalists in existence have been in decline.
That being said, Kotaku gets a bad rap for some fairly tame reasons. There's usually not much wrong with the articles, people hate on them because of internet reasons, which tend to lack reasoning and logic.
Game journalism has been shit for a decade now, but Kotaku gets a bad rap for 'bad journalism'? Yeah, good job people.
