That's on top of 44k copies last month, making 50k copies total.

five thousand copies breaks even with most VNs.  If you sell ten thousand, your VN is a hit.  If you sell fifty thousand, it is a smash hit, lol.

These sales are not even from all shops :marie:

Generally speaking, after the first production run, they release  a second one if the sales are high enough (the first run varies, depending on expected sales... smaller companies tend to stick to something between five and ten thousand on the first run).  Yuzusoft has a really solid fanbase, so they probably put out between thirty and forty thousand on the first run, with a second run put out and shipped fast to the shops after they hit twenty-five thousand or so in sales.  With hits, it isn't unusual for a company to produce and ship three runs in a matter of a week if they get enough sales to justify it.

Inochi no Spare on 9th place with a mere 5k copies, which means they might have barely covered the production costs, if they were lucky enough. We can't possibly expect good games from the creators at the moment, when they don't even sell.

Someone once told me here that chuuni sells more over time but moe doesn't. I know that Inospare is not a chuuni but maybe it is true in this case too (because of the good story)

Inospare is a depressing game, talking about serious issues; nothing japanese gamers are actually really fond of. When they get back from school or work (more like school, lol), they want to boot up their pc's and play something fun or enjoyable, or watch some porn. They don't want to think about their lives or the world around them. It's a form of egoistic, escapist fullfillment and nothing really that different from what we do, although it's especially prevalent in their modern society, with all the pressure put on them.

TL&DR

It's obvious such games won't ever sell well, but the sole fact people don't want to get involved with them (i.e. undergo through a catharsis) is somewhat saddening and doesn't bode well for the developers, who actually want to create more meaningful stories, instead of >just< happy stories.

I like this kind of threads, it's insightful, I always learn something new from these lists and discussions xD I checked all of these titles on VNDB and some seem to be just pure nukige (5th and 10th on this list gave me those nukige vibes) ... Other titles are interesting and the mentioned Inochi no Spare would probably be the first title that I would read (if only I knew Japanese xD) ... I am more into dark or depressing stories. Utsuge is my cup of tea definitively.

Why is Inochi no Spare associated with good story? :michiru:

Why is it called a depressing game? What's up with "talking about serious issues"?

Have you even read the game?

I feel like Im the only person that finds escapism through imaginary characters misery

You shouldn't say that out loud. People with no life are known for acting very extreme when they are confronted with what they tried to repress.
