Well, they pretty much say how old they are by saying what year of high school they're in. I don't remember the characters' ages being directly stated, though. Besides, the Japanese Penal Code says that the age of consent for minors is 13, so...I don't think that the makers of VNs have that much to worry about, unless they have really young heroines, and even then, I don't think it's considered child pornography, according to the most recent law passed in Japan in regards to it. There was a Supreme Court case about it in the U.S. (Ashcroft v. Free Speech Coalition), and that case struck down the federal law against it. There's still some state laws prosecuting the possession of it, but they vary. It's not just Japan that condones cartoon porn with minors in it.
