Ooooh, dat writing...

So, this is really like a nukige that offers no ero and has cringeworthy weeboo writing that makes even the crudest eroge pornfests look like literary masterpieces in comparison? And people are paying actual money for this?

I never had much faith in humanity in general, but stuff like this still baffles me a little. -.-'

Pretty sure people just get curious.

Or get tricked with that art.

Yea I bet on this one. I mean the more people badmouth it the more I want to give it a try too see if it is really that bad, especially since people badmouth it here.

And even if it is truly a bad VN I still think that it's a good thing that it become so popular to become a top 10 on steam as it will still rise a popularity of VNs in general.

Rising popularity in all the wrong aspects is not exactly a good thing.

Bad commercial is still a commercial and considering that a lot of people never even heard of VNs well it's just like Kaguya sad in a Babiker's thread for pigeon VN:

"There is also a saying about how bad popularity doesn't exist. It's the same principle of why a bunch of celebrities do outrageous stuff for more attention- it doesn't matter if they're badmouthed like hell, they have more to gain by appearing in the news than they do by fading into quietness."

But being popular for something bad can come and bite you in the ass later.

Indeed something that's so bad that it's popular because of it raises popularity, and you'll make sales, no question there, but if you keep producing bad content then you're bound to lose sales because people won't keep buying crap, unless they don't know what else to do with their money. You'll also start setting a stigma if you keep releasing bad content. And this also affects your next products.

And given that SP plans on releasing Grisaia on Steam, this is a really poor foundation to prepare the Steam community for it if you ask me.

Not to mention the Steam community generally doesn't care for VNs and with this you're making them care less.

They'll see it was produced by SP and go "Oh they're the same guys that did that crappy VN some months ago" except Grisaia's price will of course be higher and the people won't be interested in spending that kind of money on something they think will be as bad as the previous one.

Of course Grisaia is not even close to being bad, but if you advertise something bad first then you're bound to get people to think your next releases might be bad as well, and this will affect sales and popularity in a negative way.

That's what I wouldn't like to see happen and that's what I mean by popularity in all the wrong aspects is not always a good thing.

It's good if you're releasing one thing and you want quick cash, but it's bad in the long run.

I know some people got into VNs through nukige or anime through ecchi stuff so there is that

Well that's true. I'm one of those.

Maybe i'm over reacting. I still will likely play this at some point just to see how bad it is.

The steam community probably doesn't care and will eat whatever you put on their plate.

If we weren't talking about VNs I might agree but VNs used far worse things to even get to this point, I mean come on they use porn as a bait for people to read them. Not to mention that you don't really know that it is bad you are just assuming that is bad. As far as we know it all the fanservice and ecchi might be there just as bait too. I mean as none of people here seem to actually had read it we have as much to judge it on as we had before it was released.

I'm sorry, but your post doesn't make any sense. Just because certain types of content or cliches exist within works, it does not mean they only serve as some sort of a bait to encourage consumers. In most cases, they exist because authors either thought it would be fun to include them, or because they matter, be it story or gameplay wise. Saying vn's use porn to encourage playing them is a bit of an exaggeration; in the same spirit, we could say as well that porn industry exists to encourage worldwide procreation.

Sakura Spirit wasn't aiming to be any sort of an extraordinary work to start with; it's an indie (western doujin) game with lots of fanservice and naughtiness, and that's preety much fine. At times you might simply want to relax, both physically and psychologically, instead of getting all "deep and dramatic". Games like Sakura Spirit exist to serve that purpose. Tragic writing and really poor execution are the only problems, which make it hard to call the game enjoyable.

On the other hand, graphics are really good; especially the backgrounds. I'd say they are on par with high quality jp titles. Too bad the rest doesn't live up to them.

Actually what you say doesn't make any sense as H are just forced in story most of the times, authors don't write them because they want them as part of story but to boost sales, and you know that it's the truth.

You know, let's not be moralfags here: there's nothing wrong with Ecchi. Sakura Spirit's problem is its god-awful writing. Still, I'd probably torrent it just to see by myself...

And how do you know that writing is bad as it doesn't seem that you played it? Just based on those few "Weeboo" lines? well that doesn't really tell a thing about a story it self. And yea I do think that there is a lot wrong with ecchi but let's not go in there now.

And how do you know that writing is bad as it doesn't seem that you played it?

You can tell how good the prose/writing is by flicking through a few screenshots. Knowledge of grammar is terrible on the one hand, yet on the other it seems like they've used their limited knowledge to over-edit the prose. They don't know how to speak formally, leading to ridiculously padded and roundabout sentences. "But for what purpose would they have needed such an item" ... I know they're trying to speak like a village elder, but all they've manage to do is make him sound verbose. An overuse of exclamation marks, an overuse of commas, just a clumsy writing style. Everything sounds awkward. And yes, I only need to look at the screenshots to make the declaration.

"I'm just teasing him my darlings, no need to get so worried. But I can imagine what brings you three here. However, I'm surprised about one thing." This line takes less than a minute to edit. They were either lazy, or lacking in some basic writing knowledge.

But I'm a little picky about writing these days.

PS: Icebound has MUCH better prose than this, and is a MUCH better offering from the OELVN community. Sekai Project should be more careful in picking which developers they support.

SP is currently doing a giveaway of ten copies through rafflecopter. If you want to try, but feel that spending those few bucks would still seem like a waste, it's a perfect opportunity to try your luck.

They'd have to pay me to wade through their offering. Pay me, pollute my mind and corrupt my soul.

You can give it a go though :P

I just read this comment on Steam. Anyone willing  to take one for the team to see if it's true?

The visual novel can be read in under an hour. That's all there is. You literally get once choice and it really doesn't make a difference to the story. It's poorly written, suffers from engrish in some places and on top of that, the tropes are so recognizable and bad, not in a funny -haha - kind of way, but in a, ugh, when will this be over kind of way.

Some visual novels are amazing. The stories are great and it's not a chore to read. This...it's on sale and I had money in my steam wallet and I still want a refund.

If this is true. I'm done.

But the game supposedly has 4 main heroines so it'd be weird if you only have 1 choice. Unless there's no heroine route and the word heroine is just used to refer to the main characters.

If you check out the comment section, then you will see 50% of the negative review are not because of the plot or engrish or something like that, but because:

"This. Is not. A game.

This is a graphic novel. One which is appealing to the male psyche, perhaps... but...

This. Is not. A game."

Those kind of comments are more than expected. They appear on Narcissu's steam page too.

They give away Narcissu for free on steam and yet it still gets bashed for being a VN.

My point is you can't deny this misrepresents VNs and won't help the stigma at all.
