  1. I didn't really want to make it sound disastrous, as truly disastrous would have to be something written below a 4th grade level. At the very least, I see an honest effort behind yours and it's definitely not the worst thing I've ever seen by a mile. I believe Grisaia actually had an issue similar to this? They had to actually expand the textbox because the textbox couldn't contain translated Fujisaki text. If we were to actually consider a full Oretsuba release then you'd definitely want something like this, having full access to the engine would be a god send. This is pretty random as I wasn't really talking about that, but I might as well address it. I think the only really questionable part of Moogy's translation was Picture book > blue bird. It invokes the same sort of feeling but it's quite a change from the original, for sure. But Moogy's is close to a replication of the experience of Comyu than Ixrec's is, and that's the line. I don't really care about excessive literal sentence structure and word choice, as I define translation via a replication of an experience from one language to another. And honestly, no offense, but I really don't find Moogy's hard to read at all. But you aren't the only person I've heard say that, so maybe it's just me. Anyways, I wasn't trying to rag. But lines like this: I can basically conjure the japanese in my head. It just reads and feels like a translation. And that is something much worse for a game like Oretsuba. The game is 100% based on its text, it has no real plot or anything. I just have to question if you currently have the english writing ability that brings Jacksons writing ability to life.
  2. So my wishes for a quality product shouldn't be respected, but the wishes of people for batches of low quality vomit to be spewed up because it's 'better than nothing' should be? What sort of backwards nonsense is that? The problem with your liberal point of view here is that releasing a bad fan translation hurts the product forever. There is no "decision" to be made, because a second, better version won't ever be done. EOP's will simply have to put there head back and drink the sewege due to lack of options. That's the only reason why Ammy and Takajun were so well regarded, because they put out things nobody else will. Nothing to do with quality. I guess this problem has become sort of moot, now. Subahibi will probably be the last big fan translation to come out, since almost all big translators have found official work, and quality standards for official releases have been raised across the board, and theres been a pretty big surge of awareness of TL quality. I just hate this idea that something should be left be, left alone, and left to ruin whatever product they are supposed to represent, just because "well, what do you expect?". That's bullshit, nobody should have to be fed garbage because theres no food in the fridge.
  3. To be totally honest, i'm not sure what you are talking about with the whole prologue thing. If anything, the very opening of asairo describing autumn in a forest is one of the prettiest openings i've seen, and most of the SoL in chapter 1 is of the same ilk as the stuff in chapter 2. Chapter 1 does sort of lack an emotional punch like 2 does, and is mostly just a downward spiral of despair for every araragi lover ever, but I never thought the first part lacked direction or anything of the sort. If anything, I think anything after chapter 2 is a bit worth less if anything because of the how loaded Ch2 is with most of the games highlights. I.. definitely didn't expect this, though, lol. Asairo really didn't seem like the thing most people would like, the fact that it's so well regarded amongst the english community still boggles me. But this is probably my 2nd favorite game ever and it's something thats close to me on a level that very few other games are. So seeing other Asairo fans brightens my heart, at least
  4. Hi sanaht, its been awhile. I'm going to actually respond to this because it addresses a number of issues I've had with the english audience and why i've decided to disassociate with the english visual novel fanbase at large. I don't know where this originated from, but it's very incorrect to even assume that translating increases your Japanese proficiency. If anything, it only teaches you how to think of Japanese in english when you are at a lower ability of japanese, which does not help you graduate to any sort of higher echelon of understanding what you are reading. And if you are still too stubborn to let go of this route, go ahead, practice translating. But theres no reason to release it at that point. It's harmful. And maybe it could be a decent english exercise, when you simply take a moment to look at all the terrible english translations around that both fail at japanese level and fail at an english level, I simply doubt that it's ever used or taken as such. People are so focused on translating that they blindly, literally translate just from dictionary to dictionary and don't really care about meaning or writing style or anything. So, I don't think this applies to any fan translators. This line of thinking is just one I despise. There is no such thing as a free lunch. Time spent on reading a 4mb game like Monobeno could be better spent elsewhere, reading something that didn't have a bad translation. Or improving japanese so you didn't have to worry about that. Or anything. Either way, when the product is bad, the there is an enormous time wasted from both the translator and the reader. Whether the reader knows it or not, a terrible translation vastly negatively impacts how much they enjoy a work. Saying that 'it's better than nothing' is simply an extremely lazy attitude to take and the very reason why terrible translation after terrible translation continues to make it through the VN gutters with absolutely no standards set. The existence of the translation is more precious to people over the quality of it, because they are just that rare. The fact that people don't care about the quality of the writing in a medium that is almost entirely focused upon narrative and writing is just insanely mind boggiling. Making something a lesser work because of ridiculously flimsy logic like practice and 'its free' is just disrespectful and just born of nothing but greed and desire for more works. There :is: an integrity of the work to consider, and there is the enjoyment and readability of the work to consider. As far as i'm concerned, the notion that 'if i can understand it, it's fine' is utter bullshit. If something can be bettered by just effort and time alone, then it should be. The fact that completely ruining original works in favor of mediocre translations just because theres no alternative is an acceptable practice in this fanbase is just disgusting. If fan translators really want their game to succeed, then study, read more, get better, and do it when you can get off of EDICT dictionaries. There is no excuse to put out a shit product just because 'you want to'. It's lunacy. Anyone who doesn't care about quality can just go smash their heads on machine translators, that's fine, but saying stuff like "I don't understand why anyone would think that fan translators have an obligation to provide a quality product" is incredibly disrespectful to the people who actually care, which I hate to say it, is a decent amount of people, however shunned. And these people get no favors done by having a bunch of people just not care and release crap after crap. If people need practice, fine. But maybe hold onto it for awhile and come back when you've gotten better and take a double check. So, yeah. This is the unpopular opinion, but if this crap keeps continuing I can't help but think that a game that I truly like is one day going to get this stupid treatment, and a completely lesser product than what I read is going to be consumed by the masses. Thats just heartbreaking to think about.
  5. There is alot more to Dies than prose, and alot of fans of Dies aren't going to walk in and expect a masterpiece of an adaptation. To alot of people I've talked to, they're just interested in both A: The idea of Masada being at the helm of an anime and B: Seeing some of the cooler scenes of the game animated. Thats it. Nobody i've talked to wants nor cares about a proper adaptation of dies because its too unreasonable. Thats what i mean: Fanservice. Just for people who have played the game, like how the Oretsuba anime is incomprehensible to anyone who hadn't played it (it's apparently filled with injokes that only people who followed the game really 'got'). I'm not really sure how masada plans on bringing his touch to anime, but I have alot of trust in the guy, so at the very least I'll probably be entertained. And another thing: Light had already been asked awhile ago about an english translation of Dies and they refused, so thats not happening unless via fan translation, and Dies is above anything most fantranslators can handle. The idea of that is even more incomprehensible than a dies adaptation.
  6. Okay, lets clarify some things. Masada is signed onto the anime if it does succeed. He'd be writing the whole thing. So is G-Yuusuke, the artist for all of his games. And the chief of Light would be working as producer, iirc. Thats alot of power in the hands of Light already. We don't know anything else beyond that. There's honestly no point of even speculating if it'd be good or bad at this point, we know almost nothing beyond that. Dies would be a really big challenge to adapt properly due to the length of the VN and how intricate masada's grandoise descriptions are to the feeling of the fights. And the game really has tons of characterization which can really only be achieved through something that gives a ton of attention to every character. Honestly, I really doubt that this is gonna be something for people who haven't read the game to watch. It's probably just going to be fanservice for the 爪牙. Which i'm okay with, because a proper, faithful and equally as good dies anime is just really impossible to immagine. Besides, we don't even know what form this will take. Could end up being a movie. Could end up being just a few OVA's or something, who the hell knows. But it's definitely way too early to react to it. Light's probably using the crowdfunding method to gauge interest in it. So yeah. Calm down everybody.
  7. If you have time to read hours and hours of machine translation you probably have enough free time to learn japanese, don't ruin the experience for yourself. Japanese :is: hard and you'll be frustrated, but its worth it.
  8. As a massive fan of Dies and having the pleasure to the game in its original form (with massive amounts of headaches, questions to superiors, etc) I can't say I like the translation. Quite simply, the game reads like any other fan translation ever created. You have a few good lines here and there that sort of capture it, but overall its very stiff and simply lacks the power that masada's text has. Its just.. honestly boring, which is the exact opposite of what masada should be like. Just a few things I noticed early: It's not 'Makina', its Machina. As in Deus Ex Machina. 'giggle' is not something I would ever describe Samiel as doing ever in the history of ever, ever. As someone who even knows the context of some of the stuff thats being talked about in this video, I still find your translation a bit muddy on what exactly is being talked about. I know that the game itself can be pretty vague at pretty much all times, but it seemed to get worse going to english. Anyways, I don't mean to bash, just things I see.
  9. More likely than not amaterasus next project after rewrite: harvest festa is going to be baldr, but this is me speculating. Also, Baldr is simply too long to be approached with a casual attitude. You're looking at about 4+mb of text, lots of image editing, and other troubles. Its not something most people have the dedication to do, especially by people you simply find. Not a good idea for a sudden project.
  10. People who say who can skip learning Kanji by using machine-assisted stuff like Jparser are utterly insane. Alot of Jparser entries have tons and tons of fluff that only adds to confusion when you're trying to figure out what a words means in the context of a sentence, and apart from the fact that you're learning the word as some arbitrary brief translation into english (which is bad itself), alot of entries in edict are badly explained and poorly worded. Of course, jparser (and edict itself) is pretty unavoidable when you start out, but the more you learn the more you quickly realize it should only be used as a reference, not a gospel. When you learn enough you REALLY want to switch into J-J dictionaries so you can learn the real nuance of a word. I see way more mistakes by japanese learner not because of poor fundamentals with grammar, but because edicts terrible method of explaining words just leads people astray and harms them more in the long run.
  11. Oh god just wait until chapter 6, you might faint. For the record, Akira > Ayumi > Rinko > Sera is the route order. Nothing else makes sense. Please do not go off this, lol.

Subahibi is pretty special, I really like how it takes an otherwise unapproachable to the layman philosophy (Wittgeinsteins tract and the overall theme of "The limit of our perspective, is the limit of our world." ) and makes it a rather enjoyable story. My main gripes with the game sorta hamper my enjoyment of it alot, though, and that's mostly the pacing. Rabbit Hole 1 is a riot to read after you play the game up to TnS2, but it was pretty slow up until the end of it for the most part, and I can't say I was really fond of the (what I thought was) rather unfunny yuri slice of life. Rabbit Hole 2 is a bit more solid in this regard but it still took awhile for me to really care, and again, I found it alot more interesting to read the 2nd time through as opposed to the first time. I honestly think I just don't care about Yuki's perspective, to be totally honest. I find Tomosane and Takuji to be alot more relevant and alot more involved, Yuki was way better as a heroie on-screen as opposed to a protag. Invention is probably my favorite part of the story, because it is just.. madness. Another thing I like about subahibi, and this especially rings true for invention, is that it's really.. hard to tell how much of it was real and how much wasn't. It really has this feeling of being :within: the supernatural as opposed to being directly involved with the supernatural, if that makes sense. Also, the Cow ending (appropriately dubbed) with Kimika is probably my favorite end in the game. Just magical. A great moment. I wish Kimika wasn't so uninvolved though, she really seems she's just in the game for fun, she doesn't really do anything much. My biggest gripe with the game comes down to Zakuro though, besides her painfully bad voice acting I just find her gratuitously boring and Insects is probably the lowest point of subahibi because of it. Every time she was on the screen in the other parts of the story I had to fight down the urge to ctrl, she's just so.. nothing. Her whole situation in Insects is just so overblown that I couldn't take it seriously. Kinda makes it sound like I hate the game, but apart from the pacing/zakuro I find Subahibi to a really special story. It has some pacing issues but I don't think theres enough in the game that mostly everyone will find :something: to take away from it.
  13. This is mostly simply because of how all ages/18+ is looked at in Japan. They are totally seperate products, so I guess Frontwing wants to make it absolutely clear as such. as Koestl said https://twitter.com/koestl/status/541856002950582272 here, 1 month release delays compared to all-ages, but who knows, it's all still pretty vague. Now, I don't really care that much since I was probably going to get the all-ages stuff anyways (as long as the stuff in Angelic Howl remained uncensored, anyway, because that's kind of important) but the western fanbase does have this obsession with porn. I immagine koestl/sekai must be pretty frustrated at this aswell. To add: The whole "no porn" rule applies to live-action and photo's. Drawn/comic seems to be fine.
  14. I will warn you that basically nothing Romeo has ever done has translated well into english. Even Ixrec admits that his own C+C translation is really bad, and the others are... just really unrepresentative of what he actually is. Especially KK. Also, I'm not sure why this whole thing started with Romeo writing YMK, but he didn't. He's in the credits but on several sites some other people are listed as the writers, it doesn't look like romeo wrote a single sentence of it. Jintai has some amazing voice acting for Watashi the protag, but apart from that I think the episodes are all really out of order from the LN's. I've heard it's worth it if you never plan on touching the LN's, though? Can't give a definitive response to this.

Im not sure why people don't like Benio's route, it's really the only route that gives a big picture of the whole setting of the Comyunet, and while Benio can be quite annoying, she at least has a dream that she is absolutely steadfast in. Hisoka isn't even a character, she's basically just there to be Akihito's echo chamber, and her route feels extremely lazy and unfinished. Not to mention Mayuki/Ayaya's routes are just messes of useless (I kinda like Mayuki's in a way, though) I really wish the game had Nanase and Yoruko routes instead of Ayaya's and Hisoka's, both of their backstories are far more interesting and could let you see parts of the setting you didnt a chance to.   16. I finished Akagoei. Reikas route.. actually kinda had an ending! I'm almost disappointed. The 'twist' is more than a little silly, but hey. The game made me laugh alot and theres a really specific charm to the manzai humor. Can't by any stretch rate it highly, but I definitely enjoy it alot more than what my rating for it shows. Next game is hello lady. Already started. Why is narita so amazing
  17. Except that painting is making something original, and this is taking someone elses work and giving another fanbase a mangled copy of it. Apples and oranges. You would be amazed at the amount of translations people do (mostly attempt to do) while openly admitting that they haven't even read the game before, or people that pick up something while not even breaking the year mark in studying just because they are bored and 'want practice'. It's far from the minority of fan TL's. I agree that blindly bashing TL's isn't constructive nor productive, that's true. But people will defend any TL to the absolute maximum even if the writing style is stilted and isn't the same (this applying to people who play the game in japanese and talk bad about a translation) or the english is horrendous. That's silly. People should absolutely be allowed to criticize it regardless if it's a Fan TL. It promotes better quality. This fanbase doesn't allow for that because every translation is some sort of holy relic that we should all just deal with because people put time into it. People who criticize TL's aren't always just people who ride the hate train, they are also people who've read the original and are sad to see a subpar translation come out of it. And only in EXTREMELY rare cases are people going to ever retranslate something, way more often than not that bad translation will always be the one people go with, and the name is forever tarnished. If people TL'd scripts, showed them around, got some criticism/experience and grew from that, that's fine. I don't think thats faultable. This is a 20+ hour commitment of reading that you are giving to THOUSANDS of people. That needs quality control. That's not in the same scale of drawing sketches and showing it to friends.
  18. For one, people may not know Japanese, but they do know english, and most people who read regularly outside of VN's can easily see when something reads terribly and doesn't flow. If a piece of writing doesn't read well, then it's just as much a cause for a complaint as straight TL-errors, imo. It's one of the things that bother me the most about this fanbase, they accept every single translation like it's the holy grail, even if the translator will outright say they don't know much japanese. They don't care about it's readability or it's accuracy, despite people claiming they do. They only care about its existence. Nobody is willing to call any translator out on their bullshit because they feel unqualified to criticize something because everyone else will ruthlessly defend it's simple existence over it's content. People who don't learn Japanese shouldn't be scrutinized or looked down upon and be given garbage just because they don't learn Japanese and be told to 'deal with it.' That's absurd.
  19. Koyori's route is where I think the game really picks up as far as the main themes start to go. Anyways, Iyos route and Akanekos route take HUGE leaps upwards (Akaneko's route is <3 as far as themes go) so I hope you enjoy the ride.
  20. I don't really think that there is some absolute ultimate rule that demands that all OELVN's be shit or something. However, they really do not seem to attract a very talented audience to work on them. I'm sure that there's at least a few exceptions to this rule, obviously, but I can't say I've seen them. Katawa Shoujo is so popular by some miracle of the universe and yet I don't see a lick of good in it. At least not anymore. Maybe awhile ago I did. But still, we can look at the english-translated scene for this. A lot of translations have really bad and overtly stiff english and really don't do the original work justice. Some may disagree, but I really feel that the well-translated games are few and far between. And even beyond that, we have but a fraction of the really amazing games that are avaliable if you know japanese. There's really not that much once you move through all the holy grails, even less if you only stick to good translated stuff. And even beyond that, quite simply japanese writing conventions and whatnot are very much different from english ones. Basically my point is that I think that theres alot you can nitpick about when it comes to the circus that is the english eroge scene. And while I don't exactly see the quality in OELVN's, I can certainly see why someone wouldn't like what the english eroge scene has to offer. (WILL CLEAN UP TYPOS AND CRAP LATER HAVENT SLEPT)
  21. Playing Akagoei. 2 routes in (Tsukis and Taes) and man, I had heard legends about Kinugasa's inability to end things, but he SERIOUSLY cannot end anything.
