One thing I've noticed in some reviewers who prefer niche genres (such as myself) is to display a tendency I refer to as PGRD (or Popular Game Reactionary Disorder).  It is a fictional mental disease that many of us who have a distinct preference for a niche genre display that causes us to have a knee-jerk negative reaction to popular works, simply because they are mainstream.

I justify this as a desire to promote games that might not be on peoples' radar, or that they might not have seriously considered.  Why spend time and effort promoting that which has already been extensively covered elsewhere, especially if my perspective doesn't bring anything new to the table?  Does that generate value for my audience?  As a novelty seeker, I'm often interested in the games people AREN'T playing, and giving them reasons they should.  Conversely, I don't write too many negative reviews, because why would I choose to spend my time writing reviews about games I didn't like?

  2. Replaying Aselia made me remember why I was so eager to see a third Eien Shinken game, and I'm still eagerly awaiting the day when the TBA on the vndb page for Shinyaku Eien no Aselia turns to a real release date.

Last I heard, the rights for the franchise were sold to the writer since the new game was announced, and the project is very likely dead.

Yes, I'm also wondering how PayPal will react to this. I also find it hard to believe that the regular porn market will just ignore the new possibilities that Steam's new policy will offer them. Although adult VN's might be the first to make use of it, I wouldn't be surprised if Steam will soon be flooded by regular porn productions with real actors as well.

I don't think PayPal cares unless sexually-explicit content (e.g., a trial or HCG) is being offered for free.  Nutaku will likely remain a hub for free-to-play sex games because of this.

  4. It depends on the lore of each specific setting.  In some lore, a vampire is essentially doomed to be a serial killer--their prey is destined to die or be bound to them either as servant vampires or as mindless ghouls.  If you're the type of vampire that cannot blend into human society at all (e.g., due to physical deformities), and there is no vampire society to speak of, then the isolation problem becomes acute.  In some lore, the infection might be progressive, eventually causing one to lose one's self entirely.  These are all valid reasons to regard the condition as a curse to be cured at all costs.

As for people self inserting themselves on a character like this, you cannot prove they won't go after kids. Games like this can stimulate them more and make them do a horrible mistake.  I know there's arguments about how, for example, violent games like GTA won't cause someone to suddenly shoot someone in real life, but can't be sure of that.

And you can't prove that some Japanese people don't actually have mosaiced genitals.  Go ahead.  Prove it.

  6. A friend told me about an episode of perceived moderator abuse, where he got in an argument over a topical matter (not related to Fuwa rules) and moderators started removing his posts over what he perceived as simple disagreement.  This was one of those hot-button topics in the VN scene where there's supposedly a "right" answer (known to "true" fans, such as our dear moderators), and the position held by normies is "wrong".  This person is not the type to engage in incendiary rhetoric, and he's also important in the scene and could've been helpful to Fuwa.

Furthermore, this doesn't appear to be an isolated incident.  I'm hearing that multiple people with standing in the community and no reason to go around flinging mud and breaking rules have been complaining about Fuwa moderation.  Coincidentally, these incidents all seem to involve one particular moderator.

These sorts of incidents would bother me as a matter of principle under any circumstances, but in this case it's not just a matter of principle.  Such practices actually risk doing lasting harm to the community here.  Many users are not going to stand and fight when confronted with (perceived) moderation abuses.  They'll just leave and bad-mouth Fuwa to all their friends, causing a Balkanization of the fanbase.  Fuwanovel was supposed to be a place where users from all parts of the community can come together to discuss in a non-toxic environment--not one where certain cliques and opinions are favored by moderation and others are actively excluded.

I am genuinely hyped. It's actually quite strange, considering how much content I am bound to skip.

We haven't even discussed the depth of the gameplay yet.  There's somewhere near 100 different unit types, each of which can be further customized with game-changing additional skills and equipment.  Beyond that, certain units have heavy synergies within a team.  These synergies encourage making multiple teams each with a focus on a particular race.  There are also bonuses for quick mission clears that unlock higher-tier equipment, as well as drop-increasing skills and items that further increase potential gains.  In addition, higher difficulties grant much better equipment drops, adding incentive to challenge yourself.  It's a very well-designed system of incentives.

  8. However, this ignores two major issues... the cultural basis for the formation of modern language's concepts and the difference in how the language is structured (grammar in other words).

Some people want the "original" Japanese cultural experience, if not the grammar.  I can definitely see the argument against using American slang in English localizations, for example.  If you play Japanese games to escape from the pervasive influence of American pop culture, that's the last thing you want to see in your VNs.

At this rate, any game on nutaku that has voice acting is probably censoring rape.

You have it backwards.  You only knew the scene was censored because there was voice to compare to.  What is it that you care about?  That the scene was hamfistedly altered (without notifying users), or that the text doesn't match the voices?  The latter is just a symptom of the former.

I need to say something about the Venus Blood games here... it really is a shame that this company doesn't go 'legit' and start making non-ero games.  The complexity of the skill system and the way you can make levels almost irrelevant through simply combining the right units in the same squad is incredibly rewarding.

I need to say something about people expecting inferior gameplay in eroge.  The H-scenes can actually be disabled in the configuration screen.  Want a non-ero game?  You got it.

I keep telling people the gameplay in these games is good.  But until the games get an English release, they'll just have to take our word for it.

  11. Translations are clearly magic performed by bored weaboo eager to show off their wizardry to the masses--so long as they're treated to a bit of perfunctory appreciation.  If the first weaboo refuses, there's surely five others that would jump at the opportunity to grab a moment in the spotlight, to seize that brief flicker of happiness in the grim darkness of their pathetic and isolated existences.

  12. I played Raidy 1 in Japanese before I knew any useful amount of Japanese, likely with machine translation, and no walkthrough that I can recall.  I can vouch that it's not a "hard" game.  The game just pads the low amount of content by forcing you to engage in an inordinate amount of random battles to reach stat equivalence with the enemies (grind).  Forcing you to explore the map doesn't add to the "challenge".  Unexpected traps and puzzles are par for the course in any halfway-decent dungeon crawler.  It's expected.

No, because I'm not trying to make a point.

I hope I didn't arouse any sarcasm, you're the last person on this forum I want to clash with :makina:

I like LG as a way to discover interesting games and reviews and such, but I'd rather let the comment speak for itself as a caricature of the mentality/priorities of some of its writers (present company excluded) and audience

Comments are only representative of the audience.  And it wasn't very clear that what you posted was a comment by a 3rd party (since you blacked out the poster).
