I would assume it has to do with so many VN fans having started before there were a decent amount of officially translated VNs and because of this a culture of piracy has been established and lots of newer people getting into it getting advice from these people. Also one thing I think has somewhat of an effect is newer people asking for recommendations getting recommended things that only has a fanpatch thus starting of pirating which just makes it much easier for them to continue doing so. 
Also due to the length of VNs I think people who pirtate are unlikely to buy something they enjoy. For instance with anime since so many of them are rather short it is possible for people to watch a ton of anime through piracy and then among their favorites pick out which to buy on blu-ray or by merchendise. With the length of a VN it is unlikely that people would want to reread it and a digital download is not as enticing as a physical product like a blu-ray for instance and then for the physical versions of VNs many people don't want to import them either because they don't want physical 18+ stuff or are scared because loli character or semi loli characters being taken as illegal material. 

Btw can anyone think of any ways we as fans can try to increase the numbers of people buying things legally rather than pirating? Like trying to make publishers of VNs and their financial situations more known or adding where to get things legally when recommending things especially for people new to the medium or any smart ideas anyone can think of?

If you do not understand Japanese I would recommend that you go for things that are translated rather than japanese only releases as there are a lot of VNs that has been translated and actual translations should be much better to read than VNR. As for pirating I am pretty sure asking for where to pirate is against the rules of this site as it does not promote pirating. 
Under is a list of visual novels that have an official english release. There are also some other titles that has gotten fan patches in english that you can probably look for on vndb but I specialise on official releases so I would not be much of help when it comes to those.

I think it just has more to do with japanese culture and bathing in general. Bathing usually in hot water seem to be quite common in japan atleast based on how it is portrayed in otaku media, so I think it says more about how nudity is seen in the west (well parts of the west like the US) always being considered sexual regardless of context. Also while I say nudety, the scene in question does censor out any potentially problematic areas. As for examples of bath scenes I would assume things like bath scenes in Sailor Moon does not atempt to sexualize her, I haven't seen Salilor Moon but I would assume not. Also in anime there are lots of bath scenes with male characters in series that aren't trying to apeal to women. So in conclution I think lots of these types of scenes are never intended to be sexualized and that people with different standards which regard nudety whether censored or not who view it as sexual regardless of situation are the ones at fault for taking it this way.

Some time ago I made a list containing pretty much all VNs officially released in english. When going through them I found that a lot of phone VNs are otome VNs often with Medieval setting. I would recommend checking through titles from NTT Solmare Corporation, Otomate and  Design Factory Co., Ltd. Think those should have a good amount of what you are looking for.

Confession: I've just learned that there's is a large subreddit (and more broadly, a large community) of femcels, that is more or less female incels, but them and male incels hate each other with a burning passion (instead of, like, hooking up and cancelling each other's problems?). If this doesn't represent perfectly how screwed up modern society is, I'm not sure what does.  (+ crying inside)
EDIT: And funnily enough, I think the lady that introduced me to the fact of femcels being a thing is the same person that made this memorable Bing search I mentioned in my previous post. She went to /vnsuggest subreddit today looking for "yuri lolicon visual novel" and got downvoted to hell, but her nick, "femcelforever", sparked my curiosity.
BTW, that's probably on my top 5 list of saddest nicks anyone could use online. 

What about Princess Evangile, think it should fit pretty well with what you are looking for.

Well it does have drama but it isn't generally that heavy in Princess Evangile and I guessed it was more so relationship drama the OP wanted to avoid though that was just a guess.

It has unique plot, also I would really recommend it if you are a fan of Nisekoi, the routes are quite varied in tone and I feel they really do a good job with the characters and also does some interesting things with the choice system for comedic moments, like for instance playing cards against Chitoge. Personally I really liked reading it and gave it a 8.5 score on vndb.
Under is a review I made for it though it has some spoilers not major ones though, more so the general way the VN is built up
 

I would say Nisekoi Yomeiri kind of has one. Of course most of the routes are romance routes but the Ruri route doesn't have romance in it. The main thing in the route is pretty much just trying not to get Ruri to hate you because of Shu (the main character's best friend) getting him involved in shit that piss her of. The route is more about remaining friend than becoming friends though so not sure it is what you had in mind.

I don't know how Damekoi is to read myself but concluding that the VN will be predictible due to one plot point that you have no idea how well they will handle just seem stupid. You seem to be more so the kind of person who judges things based on things such as whether it has a character archetype or a certain type of story element rather than how this character archetype is handled or how the story element is handled. Also Pedo referes to someone into pre pubesant children, not someone into any teen younger than 18, just wanted to correct you there because people seem to throw that word at every VN with a character who looks like she potentially could be under 18 years old.

Considering that they will probably sell hardcopies of Hapymaher at Anime Central I think that would be a natural time to announce the FD.

I made a youtube video for the list just generally talking about it and how things are sorted on it. The video is just me talking while I use to list to showcase a few things, but it was somewhat fun to try to make a video. Maybe in the future I will try to make some other visual novel related video though at the moment I don't know that much about editing videos so they probably won't be that great regarding quality.
