    * Sachi from Grisaia is an obvious pick. I just love her sensual voice and her NOT very subtle innuendos.
    * Yuzuyu from Fureraba. Yeah, she's a Tsundere, and an extremely verbally violent one at that. But all Tsunderes have their cute side.
    * Tamase from Muv-Luv series. She's about as DereDere as they come. She wears Neko accessories too.
    * Asahi from Sorcery Jokers. I absolutely adored her for her singing Christmas carols randomly. Not to mention her utter fearlessness....
    * Mihiro from Wagamama High Spec. For an Oppai Loli, she's cute. Her theme song is also super cute.
    * "Ruuko" from To Heart 2. She's certainly unique, that's for sure.
    * Rise from Princess Evangile. I liked her random jealous skits.
    * Kirari from Kira*Kira. Ever wanted to see an adorable punk rocker girl who changes her hair pink? Well here you go.
    * Hikari from Under One Wing. Like Sachi, she's rather prone to sexual jokes too.

    * +1 for Sankaku Ren'al as well. It's comedy is really, really good. Love the memes, genre savvy references and 4th wall breaks.
    * Fureraba . Really light hearted and comedic.
    * Princess Evangile . Lots of cute characters, and some comedic skits (I loved the random bouts of jealousy sometimes). Has a bit of drama.
    * To Heart 2 . Highly recommended, it's a good read all around. Plenty of comedy, and a bit of drama.
    * Grisaia no Kajitsu . Definitely has really great comedy (especially in the common route). It does though, have some pretty serious drama, and dark themes at times too....
    * Little Busters! . Pretty good comedy, and the Battle Rankings during the common route can be fun (probably the most fun Common Route I've had). Being a KEY VN, it's known to pull on your heartstrings.

Well ...... I cried 30 times while reading Clannad (and I'm a guy that never cries normally). Though it was mostly the happy or bittersweet tears.
Clannad is a VN about friends and family.
    This song.......
THIS SONG ......... every time it came up!
..... Roaring Tides had some emotional impact too.

Little Busters is another KEY VN, that also has that real "band of best friends" theme. It also has an amazing soundtrack.

Kira*Kira is another VN I had some emotional attachment too. One of the heroines was almost like a daughter.
.......... and then, a scene happened, and I got completely devastated for more than 24 hours....
Totally agreed! I teared up on her route too (when that fast paced vocal track hit during that scene). I was like YEAH!

ill tell you why! every single character in that vn is haunted by something. whether its aoi feeling empty after seemingly life taking his meaning of waking up in the morning, or kotoris freedom when she lost her legs, or agehas regret for not pursuing the one she loves, or amane trying to fulfill a promise to her first best friend! all the characters are at their lowest but they come together, not to save humanity or to even save their school, but to fight for a new dream! something they can fight for and say looking back "I tried my hardest and dammit, we did it! our dreams came true!"

you all who read it, this image alone should be enough to convey the deep emotional feelings this vn brings upon you like a rock!

Since I havn't posted in this thread in a while, I'll list my thoughts about the last 3 VN's I've finished.....

    To Heart 2
    https://vndb.org/v20
My first thought is, why didn't this VN get an official release!?
I really had a lot of fun with this VN. It had a lot of colorful characters and comedy. It had it's fair share of drama too (nothing too serious).
I always like my Tsundere characters, and Yuma was as bonkers and entertaining as they came. Konomi and Manaka were friggin' adorable. And Sasara probably had the best route overall (quite a lot of drama, and quite a lot of fanservice too).

    Under One Wing
    https://vndb.org/v17827
This VN had a few standout music tracks, and I liked the plane battles (I wish there were more of them).
Otherwise it's a typical rom com. Hikari was highly amusing with her sexual jokes (and sexual harassments). And as far as Tsunderes go, Kazusa is quite a level headed one.

    Sankaku Ren'ai: Love Triangle Trouble
    https://vndb.org/v19444
This VN is just loaded with lots of quirky, nerdy, 4th wall breaking humor, and tons of references! Easily one of the funniest VN's I've read (it's up there with the likes of Fureraba and Grisaia).
Shiina in particular was hilarious, with her Eroge memes (though the whole cast managed to be almost as quirky as she was)!
And of course, this VN has juicy imouto H scenes (and they aren't too long winded either)

Meanwhile, here I am still waiting on releases like Lamunation and Aokana....

I can speak only for myself and my motivation to read VNs is a bit sketchy in the first place. At first, I simply kept them as an allowed exception while trying to limit my video game habits. It evolved to the current state of affairs, where I more or less stopped playing any other kind of games. The reason I find visual novel way less toxic for me is because they require some basic intellectual effort to follow the story and don't include endless gameplay loops I could burn countless hours on. They're stories to experience, and not autistic sandboxes that'll suck me in for a week and spit out with with bloodshot eyes and realisation of dozens of hours burned on something that didn't even left me an impression that would be worth sharing with anyone.
But, if course, if there wasn't something in VN that I really enjoyed, I wouldn't get so much into them. For me its:
    1. Incredible variety of conclusive romance stories. I honestly didn't know I liked romance stories this much before I came back to watching anime regularly and started reading VNs. But anime quite too often means harem comedies and I happen to hate "romance" in those. Because they never commit and when they do, it's usually not the girl I was rooting for. This is why having a route for every heroine is an enormous perk. I identified the best girl? I can get the MC to romance her. I like some secondary ones? Also covered. The rest of them? I probably got enough connection to the whole cast by this point to enjoy them too in the end. No linear media will give me that.
    2. Variety of romance stories once more. Yuri, otome, galge, BL. Fluffy love stories and serious drama. Tiny games for half an evening and novel-sized epics. VNs got you all covered. It might get stale if you just read moege, but, partially because of my weird blogging endeavours, I end up reading incredibly varied stuff and so far I didn't get bored of any of it.
    3. Anime art. I love anime art over any other style. Give me anime girls kissing and you can take all the rest of my visual media away, I won't complain much. But aside from my personal deviancy, VN art is just that good in many cases.
    4. And well, for someone like me, with pretty limited visual imagination, in many cases VNs are simply more compelling than literature. I like having at least some visual representation of what I'm reading to give my mind some point of reference/guide on how to interpret it all. For example, I'm not sure if I'd have enjoyed reading Dune as much as I did if I didn't have some vision of its world from the classic games I played. It's not something I'm particularly proud of, but from my experience, that's just how my brain is wired and I can't do much about it. VNs are a pretty good compromise between literary text and graphics, showing you a lot but still leaving a lot of gaps for your imagination to fill.
Curious what other people's motivations are. :3

    * Princess Evangile . For a typical moege, it manages to have more drama then most.
    * To Heart 2 . I was recently in the same VN slump (getting turned off VNs by a lack of drama). Then I got hooked on this VN. Pretty light hearted, but has plenty of comedic drama (and sometimes actual drama on certain routes).
    * Sorcery Jokers . Probably a good introduction to the Chuuni genre. Lots of fight scenes. This is basically a cyberpunk Final Fantasy in VN form.
    * G-senjou no Maou . You will NOT get bored reading this crime thriller. Made by the same people from Sharin no Kuni.
    * Grisaia no Kajitsu . Has a larger then life cast, and tons of humor in the common route (the common route is very long and almost outstays it's welcome). Character routes have plenty of drama (and emotional punch, and dark themes). I've heard people compare this to Sharin no Kuni too....
    * ef - a fairytale of the two . The first half is basically love triangle drama. The drama only manages to get more intense from there (has some dark themes too).
    * Muv-Luv Trilogy. Set aside a month of two in advance. Muv-Luv Extra is a fluffy comedic drama (character routes are weak though). Muv-Luv Unlimited changes the setting, and adds a lot of intrigue. Then comes Muv-Luv Alternative ....... which is absolutely loaded with drama, action, and emotional feels.

    Hey everyone!
First, I wanna say thanks to everyone who creates content here, I've already used a couple of the walkthroughs and thought I would join the Forums.
Like it says in the title, I'm pretty new to VN reading.
I watched Clannad a while back and liked it so much I decided to read the VN. That was a long and emotional ride. I of course had to read Tomoyo After as well to finish off the story.
Recently I decided to go back and read the first couple Key VNs and I just finished Kanon.
Other than those, I read some smaller ones here and there like Lucy -The Eternity She Wished For- and DDLC which I guess counts haha.
Anyway, I think I've made the long enough, I'll probably be watching the Kanon anime before I start another VN.

You sir, are in desperate need of To Heart 2 Trope king, very light on drama, more like anime than a visual novel, romance galore, 11 heroines, 9 routes, hours and hours of enjoyment, and translated by yours truly.

Sorcery Jokers comes to mind (it literally is a school for technological magic users). Even though the magic is technology based, it's not really strong on science fiction (some characters have actual powers too). Also the high school setting is just a part of it. Two of the girls does have big boobs

    * Fureraba . Fluffy, cute, very comedic.
    * Nekopara series. Over the top cuteness (and lewd action). This is as japanese as you get....
    * Little Busters . Another KEY VN (makers of Clannad). Good comedy, and the whole "endearing group of best friends". The Battle Rankings are fun too (if optional).
    * Sorcery Jokers . The setting of this VN would probably remind you of JRPGs like Final Fantasy and Tales of series. A lot of action and intrigue in this urban setting.
    * Muv-Luv (Extra and Unlimited), & Muv-Luv Alternative . The perfect way to waste a lot of time, the Muv-Luv Trilogy is something you won't forget. Extra is your typical high school romance comedy, with a lot of silly scenes (you may miss these scenes later on). Unlimited .... changes the setting. And Alternative ...... ramps up the drama, ramps up the pain, ramps up the emotional trauma to 11/10. Cause sometimes, dealing with pain in Visual Novels can help you get over yours....
    * Higurashi When They Cry series. Great if you're looking for something super intense, scary, and effed up. Use the installers at http://07th-mod.com/home/ to add updated graphics and voiced lines (just so you can hear her insane laugh).

The Battle Rankings were what made Little Busters common route so much fun. Don't take it seriously, and just watch the waifus battle it out.
Sometimes the RNG scripts some funny results. I swear, Komari is quite strong in the battle rankings at times....
The RNG can also script some dramatic baseball matches too (in one match, on the absolute final ball, Rin won the entire game with a home run).

Little Busters has that group of best friends thing going for them. And the Battle Rankings minigame in the common route literally has the cast compete against each other with random household items!
Clannad has the protag be a dick to his best friend (actually, the whole cast is bad towards said best friend). Also, any banter involving Kyou or Fuuko is bound to be funny.
Grisia's entire female cast are VERY prone to bantering about tons of topics (almost all topics go in a sexual direction very quickly too). Not to mention, Grisia's protag has hilarious lines and inner monologues. 10/10 humor in that VN....
The whole point of Sakura Sakura is it's two comedic love triangles. It has as much comedic bantering and bickering as you'd expect. The banter between the two protags is great too!
The Muv-Luv trilogy has quite a lot of banter (especially Extra's Common Route, which has a harem competing for the protag).
Princess Evangile has two heroines (the childhood friend, and the main heroine), go at it sometimes. And almost every girl is prone to getting jealous at some point. It's hilarious!
Nekopara series ...... has actual catfights (pipsqueak Azuki is in all of them).
Island ..... has it's protag banter with pretty much everyone. Some of the best banter I've ever heard.
