Really disappointed at MG's choice of a Moonstone game and, ugh, Space Live looks like something straight out of Sakura series. But on the other hand Evenicle and Damekoi are both really great and much anticipated announcements so I'd say MG easily beat their last year's AX licenses.

So, they finally replied to one of my comments about the TL quality.
It's pretty vague and doesn't really say much, but it is nice to see a reply nonetheless.

This survey could be a good way of giving them some honest feedback. (Constructive feedback, of course. Nothing is gained from just being an ass.)

Oh, we have plenty of new announcement planned, fear not! "Frontwing TV Live" is a reference to our periodic "Frontwing TV" live streams, specifically the fact that the panel will essentially be like a live version of that.

It was Propeller... but now it is Light, because Propeller hasn't produced anything decent since Tokyo Babel... and its main writer is retired.  My current top five companies are listed below.  Eushully got knocked off because they haven't produced a masterpiece since Madou Koukaku (story-wise)
    1.  Light
    2.  Akatsuki Works
    3.  Caramel Box (Setting aside the art-style, which some art-bigots have trouble with, they produce excellent games)
    4.  Purple Software (high percentage of highest tier games since Mirai Nostalgia)
    5.  AXL (because their stuff is always worth reading)

novurdim reacted to Clephas in Are leading companies like Nitroplus and Typemoon affected by the decline in the JP VN industry?
As I understand it, Nitroplus and 5bp were partners but not merged companies.  Both of them worked on the Science series together until the most recent entry, which 5bp designed and produced separately from Nitroplus.  This is because 5bp partnered with Hobibox (the originator for Caramel Box) for the PC version's development this time around, instead of Nitroplus.  This is because 5bp doesn't have the means to effectively program/port games for/to pc, so they inevitably have no choice but to partner with other companies to produce PC versions.
Oh... and 5bp was a no-name with pc-gamers when the series first started, so they used Nitroplus to get their product sold on PC, but that was just plain common sense strategic thinking...
Edit: To Nitroplus, it was probably just a chance to add some extra cash from swag and partial profits from the sales of the PC versions...  I don't think anyone expected for 5bp to get so big when Chaos;Head came out... and now they are the primary porter of famous/infamous non-mainstream VNs to console, lol.
Edit2: It should be noted that Nitroplus, while it produces high quality games that sell a lot over the course of several years, their initial sales almost always fall behind the mainstream.  The whole point is that their sales won't be hurt by the decay of mainstream VNs, since they don't bother with the mainstream in the first place.

WOOHOO!!  As a huge Chaos;Head fan, I am super excited about this! Definitely getting my hands on the Vita version day 1!
Chaos;Child is a sequel to Chaos;Head, not a prequel. It takes place six years after the events of Chaos;Head and I have seen some references to Chaos;Head like all of the New Gen incidents for example. I heard anything needed to understand Chaos;Child is explained in the game though, so it should be okay.

... This is just a question in general... does he really add anything to this 'discussion' of SP's infamy?  I thought that it was common sense by now that SP is the evil demonic corporation of the VN localization scene...  I saw nothing to be surprised about above, considering the company's past.  I do think it was a bunch of cheap tricks, but that kind of cheap trick is part and parcel of anything 'limited edition'.

guess this was bound to happen, eh? did read it shortly before my mind collapsed and definitely had a blast whilst doing so, quite happy for others being able to experience the same somewhat soon-ish as well. from what i get the whole kickstarter thingy is to bring over an enhanced version (+goodies) of its, isn´t it? anyway hope it does well for you and possibly more to be brought over titles of theirs future-wise wouldn´t be bad either, especially a certain beautifully written jqv.

edit: don´t you ever go mainstream, doujinshi are the industry´s real alpha & omega.

edit2: just noticed that amoeba called malamasala commenting on the prefundia of yours. better not take his simpleminded whatsnot of an opinion as a measurement for the community as a whole, because that´s what it is. neither high res visuals/ famous voice acting, nor ero content which often feels out of place is what should matter most. if the writing is shit, everything is shit. simple as that.

Which is completely useless simply because
    a) almost all western localizations don't have dates until the last month and GameFaq doesn't count them
    b) GF list is literally empty, it doesn't even have any indies, obviously noone updates it
It's quite clear you have no idea what games are localized and/or are actually good enough to be brought over, I don't understand why would you get into this debate. But we can discuss it of course, if you want, and I'm sorry everyone that this turned into the vita off-topic.

Firstly, let's look at the confirmed 2017 vita localizations that are not accounted for in your attempt to show the list. Some of those even have dates so GF is, again, simply not updated by anyone:

I probably missed a few, I don't count extremely late ports like Rabi-Ribi, Fault, WEE, Root Double etc and I don't even count KS games like Sharin and Dies Irae to be completely fair. Not to mention that this list is mostly for the first half of the year, fall/winter localizations are usually announced in april/may, and among those we already know a few that are as good as confirmed like Chaos;Child, Yu-No, Punchline and Blue Reflection.
Next let's talk japanese exclusives. Among the unlocalized exclusive vita games the only relatively decent enough games I would like to see brought over are Tales of Innocence R, Phantasy Star Nova, Net High, Yuusha Shisu, Demon Gaze II, Luminous Arc Infinity, Uppers, SaGa: Scarlet Grace, Coven and Labyrinth of Refrain, The Princess is Money-Hungry, Idol Death Game TV, Dungeon Travelers 2-2 and Death Mark.
Among those only PS Nova and ToI R don't have absolutely any chance to be localized, and chances for LA Infinity are slim. Net High/Uppers are rumored to be brought over by PQube, Yuusha/Coven/Princess are NIS games which always have good chances to be translated, DG II/Death Mark are Exp. projects most of which end up localized, SaGa has been heavily hinted by SE recently, IDG TV are on the table for XSEED as they themselves mentioned and DT 2-2 is likely to be picked up by Atlus as they were the ones to localize the DT 2. What are those mythical exclusive japanese masterpieces you talk about I have no idea, Vita library in Japan is nowhere near PSP in terms of good exclusive games. You won't even find that many great multiplatform unlocalized games, even though I'm forever sad that noone translated Time Travellers.

It's happening for, erm, at least three years already, I believe. It started around the time Killzone Mercenary came out and still pretty much untrue, but we live in the age of hatred so everyone outside the actual vita fanbase gets a kick out of bashing it, which is nothing new. It is indeed long "dead" in regards of big mainstream AAA titles but that doesn't have anything to do with us perverts who play weird weeaboo games.
And... I'm not quite sure why we are talking about KB Otome here? Japanese publishers usually go with someone like Aksys for that kind of games to print physical copies and have a decent marketing but Aksys are a bit busy with lots of other vita otomes atm. Plus it's pretty much the first try for Spike Chunsoft to publish something completely on their own in the west, it's understandable why they wouldn't use something like KBO for their debut.

Well, since noone posted it yet, here you go. This retailer is apparently highly trusted, leaked quite a few announcements before, so we probably can take its listings as a 99% guarantee.

Not sure just how vn-ish Punchline is (probably another ADV hybrid) and CC is no surprise by now but I certainly never expected an official YU-NO remake localization. All games look like PQUBE material so they sure keep doing great work with VNs, now we just wait for an official confirmation, it should come soon enough. Still hoping for Net High though.

I'll ask you a single thing: was DC III, perhaps, the only visual novel you have ever heard of from mangagamer? I almost feel personally offended when someone compares MG to other existing players like Sekai or JAST and then call them pathetic because they are somehow too slow. DC III and Himawari are almost exceptions by now for the modern MG and the latter wasn't even their fault.
I'm at a loss for words. Do you even understand that Dies translation has started a very long time ago and is nearly complete, the only reason they will release it so soon is because the localization itself has been revealed extremely late in the game.
You know, with how you think that translation begins only after the formal announcement, MG has released Rance even faster than Dies!

Gross Profit != Gross Revenue. Gross profit is how much you get after operating costs. In this case, they are probably subtracting gross revenue by the cost of localization and licensing, and probably royalties and such as well. I'm not 100% sure on the formula they're using, because it seems like they're adding revenue from every sale starting from sale #1, even though they need to account for cost of localization and licensing which happens usually in full before the product goes on sale.

novurdim reacted to Decay in NEKOPARA OVA KICKSTARTER IN 2 DAYS!!!
$100k for translations into six new languages, after you account for Kickstarter fees, payment processing fees, taxes, reward fulfillment, and other misc fees, is perhaps more than they need, but not by a lot. The $200k goal for a mini-VN is much more "overpriced." That will perhaps make up for the fact that $500k minus all previously-mentioned additional expenses isn't actually enough to cover the cost of a 60 minute OVA. Essentially, the stretch goals will compensate for the fact that they are losing money on the first $500k, and that's also fine.
You know, the ideal stretch goal setups are either 1) no stretch goals, or 2) overpriced stretch goals. In both scenarios, they don't exactly inspire tons of additional backers to hop on board, but they do prevent the companies from digging themselves a hole with them, which is actually very common. I've read way too many stories from developers who made promises with stretch goals that later became infeasible, or more expensive than estimated, or for features that turned out to be less interesting than other ideas they later came up with. Often times, even when they are fairly priced, you pigeonhole yourself down a specific path for your company, forcing you to follow through with a plan even if it later turns out that doing something else would be better.
Like 99% of all kickstarters end up with the companies doing the kickstarting taking a loss. They're expensive to run, and they almost always don't generate enough money to cover all of your development expenses. They make their KS goals less than what they need and then take huge pay cuts or even cover the rest out of pocket. Too many of these companies price their stretch goals with the same philosophy they price the lowballed base goals. "Asking for $50k for this feature that actually costs $100k will allow us to fit in more stretch goals, which will get people more excited to give us money!" They continue to balloon the size and scope of their project while getting only a portion of the funds needed to make it happen. It's one of the prime reasons Kickstarters fail post-funding, actually, and if they don't fail, they create enormous amounts of stress and financial hardship for very little gain on the developer's part. They promise to improve their game in specific ways, only receive half the money needed to do so, and in the end of day it's impossible to tell how much those features affected sales and it's very possible they didn't at all. Sounds great!
A lot of game devs have preached about how you should avoid stretch goals altogether. Some say you should just make a vague promise of a better product with more money earned, and then figure out what you can do with it all after the fact. But having a small handful of stretch goals with very conservative prices are another option. That's basically what's happening here, and that's just fine. They don't owe you anything beyond what they promise in the basic feature set. With this KS specifically, you're paying for the OVA and whatever extra goods you want. Don't back if that's not enough for you.
Edit: There's also the fact that all aspects of game development, from creation, to yes, even translation, are far more expensive than you're imagining. You see kickstarters for entire full-featured indie games with $100k goals and wonder why a VN translation would need a similar goal. The trick: That full-featured game is actually being done on a desperate shoe-string budget for $500k and they're only asking for a fifth of the needed funds. In a way, this anime kickstarter is the same. Maybe making a 60 minute OVA costs $500,000, but they actually aren't getting $500k for actual anime production until they're making around $900k off the Kickstarter, most likely.
You can easily say the solution to these problems is to price your Kickstarter goals at what they actually need, all fees and such accounted for, but then you'll end up with $500k-$1mil goals for small games and goals at many millions for much bigger games, and how likely are these projects to succeed? I'm reminded of how people bitched endlessly at how overpriced the Skullgirls crowdfunding projects were, even though they still probably weren't breaking even on those.
tl;dr: Development is fucking expensive, and whatever you're imagining this stuff costs is almost certainly far lower than what the figures actually are. Having stretch goals that are actually appropriately priced isn't a bad thing.
