It can definitely add a lot of character, charisma and significance, but the Nintendo DS era proved, quite definitively, that VNs can be expressive, varied and engaging even without it. (I'm thinking about Ace Attorney and 999 here, mainly)
I don't think I've ever decided no voices was better than any provided VA, though.

Milestone achieved. Translation of Chapter 1 (Fione's chapter) is complete
Next milestones to achieve in the near future are pretty much the following:
    - Complete translation of Eris' chapter (Chapter 2)
    - Edit/TLC Fione and Eris' chapters
    - QC Prologue, Fione and Eris' chapters
    - Release Partial Patch

Guys, be careful about spoilers, please.
    Also, this:
Because, really, when it comes to fiction, nothing is 'true'. Even if the ending connects the other routes in some ways, it's still just one of the possible endings.

Well my 3 10/10 Vns are Gyakuten Saiban 3 , Kara no Shoujo - The Second Episode and Umineko no Naku Koro ni Chiru . If i must choose just one, that will be Kara no Shoujo, why? Is one of the few ´dark´ vns that i really love, has great desings and top tier plot twists.

I'm  generally against the idea of a "true ending" unless there's some kind of overarching mystery/intrigue that really needs it to be properly resolved (and the romance is secondary to that), or there's a sequel that needs it as a starting point. When there is a "true route" I usually don't get hyped for it and treat it like any other playthrough, it's my choice what I want to take from a game and which conclussion will be closest to my perception of the story. Especially in a standalone title, where I don't have to really care what's "canon".

Preferably those vns dont have true endings. And ill agree with you about the heroines should just be unique in their way. Hoshimemo for example teased the true heroine over almost all the routes, and when i finally did the true route, i almost refused to believe how bad it was, what a terrible heroine she was.

KainLegacy535 reacted to Zakamutt in Top 10 VNs I'm totally going to read before I die, ok
People keep posting their top 10 lists but frankly I can't relate to all this shit. Like, actually reading visual novels before you blast your opinion of them to the skies? Holy shit it's like I'm in good practices central or something. Since that's way too much work and the only way to get me to read things is to literally bait me with stupid bets like "I'll read some of your recs if you finish this buggy totally not moege that you probably can't text hook lul", here's my list of things that I'm totally going to read, sometime next year or so, so I can finally actually talk about them without spewing uninformed bullshit.
    1. Muv Luv Series
Widely respected, universally 7/10, porn patch never (but it'll probably be out in two years if we're lucky!). It even has a certified fresh translation, so maybe I won't feel like editing every single line. I suppose I should say something about the actual vn but I'll just assume you don't live under a rock instead tbh
    2. Dies Irae
I was totally intending to read this when the porn patch came out, but then the porn patch took forever and was shite and also I stopped respecting half the translators as much after trying out their version of seabed. So now I'm too elitist to read the loc, and uhh it's kind of hard in Japanese so maybe in five years. However YOU are probably not as picky as me so you should probably read this thing in a year or two! I suppose I should say something about the actual vn but I'll just assume you don't live under a rock instead tbh... actually I'm not sure if anyone has explained it properly without spoilers anyway so whatever really.
    3. きっと、澄みわたる朝色よりも、*ahem* uhh yeah Asairo blah blah blah it ends with a fucking comma who DOES THAT?
I already put Dies Irae here so I guess I should continue the Kamige train. This VN apparently would be really annoying to translate because it depends a lot on kanji on multiple deep levels or some shit, also the writing is memed to be real good (have u heard of Shumon Yuu), also it apparently made otakus mad because of how it had too few h scenes or something. Since you're a proud western elite free of any silly otaku impulses you're bound to enjoy it. Too bad I'm probably too shit at Japanese to enjoy it. Maybe in four years!
    4. Mememasa
TL out in 2030 if Peter Payne hasn't died from a cringe-induced heart attack looking at J-LIST ads before then, oniichan. Oh yeah, the ge. Uhh it's probably based on the idea that there are no true heroes, no weapon kills only the malevolent, and it's chuuni or something. Also it has only sad endings apparently. My edge boner is literally piercing the ceiling just thinking about it tbh. Maybe in 2.5 years!
    5. Danganronpa
Okay so I realize that danganronpa is pleb but it seems to have a somewhat unique aesthetic and I want to at least be able to have an opinion on it, especially when it's popular with people who don't normally read VNs due to their completely reasonable dislike of typical forms of the medium inherent plebness (actually honest question do I even want to associate with these people oh well). But I'm too lazy to set up the fan tl and reading a NISA tl is beneath my dignity so I guess I'm fucked for now. Is there even a jp pc port? I'll do it one day, mum.
    6. Cross Channel
Wow this one's actually translated, twice, too bad both the tls are terrible. YOU HAVE FAILED ME GEORGE HENRY SHAFT BUT I FORGIVE YOU BECAUSE YOU TRANSLATED THE MOEYURIKAMIGE HANAHIRA AT ACCEPTABLE TIER FOR MOE FLUFF. Written by the other highly memed vn writer after shumon yuu and ou jackson and masada and wait shit umm anyway tanaka romeo is like well known or something also he had an ln or two anime化'd so he's probably actually good (wait shit LNs get turned into anime all the time damn). Uhh so I hear cross channel is a comment on otaku and also the protagonist is insane or something and cool stuff happens or something, that sounds great, also the lolicons are diseased meme is good. Maybe in 3 years!
    7. Umineko
I was waiting for this to get released by MG but I'm told the fan tl group was mostly holding the strings and they don't seem fully approved by the people I know. Anyway people say Ryuukishi レナ has an either shit or unique writing style in Fapanese and it would be great to be able to have an opinion on this, and if the tl isn't great why not harvest this additional benefit right? But otoh I'd be reading a mystery vn that's longer than the organ that ended the life of mr hands (do google that, very good tbh) at like half speed. Maybe in 1.5 years!
    8. Harukuru
Ah yes, the vn that starts with like 13 h-scenes that are apparently funny and later goes sci-fi on you or something. Written by certified insane author Watanabe Ryouichi and consistently stema'd here and there, and possibly getting translated but there are no news and everyone's wondering wtf happened. The only real thing stopping me is that I should probably finish Subahibi in jp first tbh, so maybe in a year!
    9. Horobikuchiru Sekai ni Tsuioku no Hanataba wo
(This is my "doujin cred" title for the list ok)
I've thought for far too long about a tl to the title, which should probably be something along the lines of "A Bouquet of Memories in Remembrance of this [Broken, Decaying] World" where the broken, decaying part is what I'm not sure about because how do you even horobikuchiru (the vndb page has it as two words but that seems wrong to me, horobu is in -masu stem form which is commonly done if one wants to combine verbs like say 踏み込む). Uhh yeah so I actually read the prologue and I kind of want to tl it as a teaser one day because it's basically about this scientist that's like "SCIENCE IS AWESOME, BUT I'M GONNA DIE ONE DAY AND NOT SEE THE EVEN MORE AWESOME SCIENTIFIC BREAKTHROUGHS OF THE FUTURE, WHICH IS VERY 悔しい (SORRY KUYASHII IS VERY HARD TO TRANSLATE), SO ILL LEAVE MY WIFE AND CHILDREN BEHIND AND GO IN THIS FORWARD-IN-TIME-ONLY TIME MACHINE, BECAUSE HOLY SHIT SCIENCE IS AWESOME AND I WANT EVEN MORE OF THE AWESOMENESS HUMANS ARE FUCKING GLORIOUS". And then you get six different stories from the future and it's like hard sci-fi and whew it's kinda annoying to read. Maybe in 2.1 years or something.
    10. Aiyoku no Eustia
Idk what's even stopping me tbh. Oh yeah this one has a translation project in progress which looks merely meh tier rather than actively bad so to any eops that are still reading this (why?) there's hope for you too! If I like it I'll have something I actually disagree with Clephas on which would be good because he's sort of a meme among jops. Oh yeah it seemed to have edgy shit and philosophy and politics or something and a cool fantasy setting.

KainLegacy535 reacted to Silvz in [suggestion] New 50 VNs to read before you die
Hello people! First of all, a disclaimer: I don't intend to do it directly nor be responsible for doing it, BUT I could help with suggestions.
For those who don't remember or don't know, there is a very famous thread called "50 translated VNs you should read before you die". As the title suggests, there Kaguya presented 50 games that are worth reading and most fans should at least look into.
But, and there is always a but, this list is more than four years old, and although it may not seem too much time, due to the huge change the VNs Localization had in these years, it is 100% safe to assume that the list is outdated, and, although many titles there are still worth it, there are MANY others now available in English that both new and old players should take a look into.
My idea is to get a new list of recommendations, where the user can view the title (in English, if available), a small description, a small recommendation (This vn is great for action fans; this title has a lot of good looking characters, etc), maybe one or two pictures and a link to buy it/how to get it.
This could be not only a part of the forum, but be featured in the front website, something like "Recommendation Tuesday", and it would be shorter/easier to do than Fuwa Reviews (without actually affecting one another).
It could even be a "100 vns to read", and have a "10 OELVNs" in it.
I got the idea for this revival after seeing a lot of similar recommendation threads and the same games being referenced in different threads. And since Fuwa doesn't host the games anymore, it would be a great way to have new players to find and buy new titles.
Ps: Umineko MUST be on the list. The rest I leave to the community to decide
    Original thread by Kaguya:
Ps2: I have read almost all titles from this list, except for some that I'm not interested into.
    PS4: Buy a Nintendo Switch!

Well, Japanese university is no joke. I have so little free time, I barely have time to read VNs at all, let alone translate them. So, the Minato route will sadly not be done this year.
That being said, I do have a 2 week vacation for new years, and I'll definitely resume the TLing then. I don't know how much progress I'll get done, as that also marks the release of Bakumatsu Jinchuu Houkoku Resshiden Miburo, which I have been hyped for since forever. But I'll definitely get back to TLing the game then. I have been itching to translate some lines for a while now, but I'm just so darn exhausted from uni, I don't have the energy.
Moral of the story kids, Japan is mean.

Koiken Otome ~ Revive ~ Translation Project

    Project Introduction:
    VNDB Page
I'm a big fan of Koiken Otome and its fandisk, and feel like the fandisk deserves a TL. It doesn't seem like FlyingPantsu plans on TLing this game, so I figured I'd go ahead and do it myself. I'm completely finished with the translation work on my previous project, so I have been looking for a new game to pick up, and this seems perfect for me at the moment, with my interest in the game and my current Japanese skill level taken into account.
My initial plan is to translate the new routes first, which is Chiharu, Chiyoda and Minato's routes. The rest, (Kotona + the main heroine after routes,) I will leave for last, meaning there might be 2 patches released at different times, 1 for the new routes and 1 for the rest of the game. Keep in mind this plan might change down the line, if I get more translators or if I simply change my mind etc.

    Progress:
I just started, so not much have been done yet. Thanks to @Porygon2 I have the scripts extracted, an overview of the line count and tools to work in. (Thanks a lot, you are a lifesaver!)
I'm doing this as a side project next to my Japanese studies at uni, so I will have limited amounts of time each week to work on the project. Luckily, the game isn't too long. Although the total amount of lines is 27k, the three new routes I'm starting with only make up 12k of those, which is a lot more managable on my current schedule.
I will be making updates kind of when I feel like it, although I plan on doing at least 1 a month.

    Recruitment:
As of right now, I am not recruiting anyone. I will be looking for QCers in the future, when the TL and editing % reaches a certain point, and I will also be looking for a TLC later on. I will post an update when the recruitment for these positions starts.

That's about it. I am starting with Minato's route, which is about 5k lines, then I'll do Chiharu and Chiyoda.
Click this link to follow the TL progress.

No, Chapter 2 is already getting closer to completion anyway. That being said, there's still editing and QC to be done, and the weird situation now is, editing for Chapter 2 is faster than editing for Chapter 1, so unless I get a new editor (not actually planning to do that until translation of Chapter 3 begins), editing for Chapter 1 will likely finish after Chapter 2.
Besides, most people have already played the old Yanderes translation up to the end of Chapter 1, so it wouldn't be right for them to stop the partial patch at Chapter 1. I would still encourage everyone to play through the visual novel afresh though since I'm confident the translation is much better than Yandere's version

KainLegacy535 reacted to Nandemonai in Why Tentacle Rape genre is exist?
Nah, that might have something to do with it, but that's not the real reason.  The real reason is it was a workaround for Japanese censorship laws.  See, back in the 80's censorship was much worse than it is now.  Really old h-ovas would have the whole cock disappear or turn into a vague white outline during a blowjob, for example.  Male-female penetration and pubic hair were the big things, though.
The key thing is that technically, a tentacle is not a male sex organ.  So you could have 100% uncensored tentacle scenes in your h-ova, with no legal problems, but you couldn't show vanilla consensual sex without censoring the heck out of it.  That is the real reason tentacle rape became "a thing".

KainLegacy535 reacted to littleshogun in Why Tentacle Rape genre is exist?
As for who, obviously it was for the people who like that although apparently in Japan it was one of well known fetish. The reason was apparently because some of the men was like to read the work with woman getting raped by something non human, and so some company do their best to fulfill that niche. There's also a fact that this fetish was already exist since back at 18th century in one of Japanese portrait (Called Ukiyo-e), and apparently there's a manga that popularized tentacle rape there - the reason for tentacle was because the author want to get around the censorship law which censored penetration by penis.

In this thread, you list your favorite five male VN characters, giving as full a list of their personality traits, skills, abilities, and powers as you can, as well as a short history of them.

    1.
    Name: Shigure Sora
    VN: Devils Devel Concept
Powers/abilities/skills/talents:  Infinite Branching (the ability, or affliction, to see all the potential paths of your own future, waking or sleeping, and pick one which then becomes absolute fate for the current timeline), Invasion/Corruption/Violation (The basic ability of all Enja and Demons, which allows them to corrupt reality in various ways, molding it to suit their unique abilities and skills based on the Devils Organs they possess.  Demons often use this ability to strip normal humans of their humanity and make them into cannibalistic Dolls), Tracing (A Devils Organ that allows the user to 'trace' the organs and fighting styles of an opponent.  In its un-corrupt form, it is capable of allowing the user to mimic a physical form.  All gained abilities and Organs are permanent, and the only Organs that cannot be copied are the Ro).  High Intelligence (Sora is, at the very least, at genius-level intelligence).  Invulnerability to poisons, diseases, and toxins (at some point in the past, Sora copied an Organ that gives him invulnerability to all poisons, diseases, and toxins, allowing him to expel them from his mouth in masses of foreign material).  Martial Arts Skill (Sora was given instruction in martial arts by his uncle on his mother's side, and he has enough skill to dismember a human being even without using his powers).  Extremely High Pain Tolerance (Sora is not invulnerable to pain, but beyond a certain point it merely stimulates his battle instincts, transforming into a brutal, aggressive sort of pleasure).  Soukoku (a term for compatibility between various Enja.  This compatibility tends to be extreme, with incompatible individuals trying to kill one another on sight and compatible ones tending to fall into bed or become friends on a moment's notice.  In Sora's case, his changes upon his personal attitude toward the individual in question, and those he likes inevitably love or like him, and those he dislikes inevitably are terrified of him)
Personality Traits: Indifferent, lustful, sadistic, masochistic, cruel, kind, cold, philosophical, intelligent, battle-loving, bloodlust, obsession.
History: The sole survivor of the 'Genryuu' bloodline of the Enja (Demon Hunters).  At a young age, he witnessed the assassination of his parents at the hands of a masked attacker and was taken in by his mother's sister and brother-in-law.  Like most Enja, he is emotionally distant and fundamentally amoral, and unlike most Enja, he is quite literally incapable of a number of human emotions (romantic love, sympathy or empathy for those he isn't already attached to).  He is also capable of a sort of roundabout (and cruel) kindness, that is usually framed with a philosophical lecture on why the individual in question is worrying about the wrong thing.  He is bound by a 'contract' to kill all Demons he finds on sight, regardless of the possibility of victory or what he is doing at the time.  He takes the concept of a 'contract' seriously, to the point of defining all his actions and interactions with others on the basis of that term.  He has had sexual relations with numerous women, whom he (falsely) believes he raped... and who are all in love with him/obsessed with him.  His only human friend is Shinnosuke, a normal kid with a normal kid's problems who sticks with him regardless of how he is seen by others.  In the past, he 'disassembled' and resurrected all of his school's delinquents for reasons he doesn't care to mention, and as a result, the older ones and those of the same age are terrified of him.  He is unaware of/disinterested in the way the other Enja alternately want him under their influence, want him dead, or want him in bed (though that last one seems to change person to person).  He lives alone in his family's home, occasionally visited by a nameless white cat, smoking the leftover cigarettes left in the house.

    2.
    Name: Narita Shinri (Mikado Shunsui)
    VN: Hello, Lady
Powers/Abilities/Skills/Talents: High intelligence (while many dislike Narita on sight, it is undeniable that few can match his brilliance and mental agility), Combat training (Whether it is martial arts, the use of the gun, or Parkour, there is little in the way of combat-related fields that he hasn't mastered), Hamlet (the name for his Halo's type.  His Halo allows him to verbally imprint instructions into the brain of an individual whose eyes he has met.  These instructions are impossible to distinguish from the individual's own thoughts and tendencies, and the ability can only be dispelled by his act of will, lingering even beyond his death).  Scheming (He is very skilled at using his high intelligence to draw people into traps of their own making, and he has no qualms whatsoever about destroying his enemies in this manner).  Facade  (he is highly skilled at concealing his emotions, though he tends to deliberately not do so at times with those he admires).  Charismatic (while many dislike him on first meeting, people of vision tend to fall for him easily).  Meditation (He is capable through specialized breathing methodologies and mental disciplines of reducing his need for sleep and evening out spikes of emotion).
Personality: Vindictive to the extreme, kind-hearted, compassionate, wise, independent, intelligent, scheming, pragmatic, ruthless, deliberately emotional, openly perverted, arrogant with cause.
History: As a young man, his family was massacred by members of the same clan.  As a result, he was forced to discard his original name (Shunsui) and was picked up by an aging mercenary who was infamous in the underworld of spy games and proxy wars of the Cold War era, who then taught him his combat skills and left him the money he decided to use for his revenge.  He enters the Tenkawa Noble School for the sole purpose of avenging himself on the individuals responsible for the deaths of those he loved.
    3.
    Name: Shiranui Yoshikazu
    VN: Evolimit
Abilities/Talents/Powers/Skills: Astronaut Training (He is fully trained as an astronaut, terraforming colonist, and generalized researcher, though he has no degree).  Martial Arts (He was trained in martial arts by Shannon Wordsworth and actually became quite skilled in it, though he cannot be said to be a true master).  Kokoro (He can converse with the disembodied spirit of the girl whose heart beats in his chest.  She often serves as a - far wiser - sounding board for him, and her concern for him is often a lifeline in various situations.  She is able to exist inside him at the cost of his ability to feel sorrow).  Patch (A mysterious stone that grants immense physical abilities, the ability to survive in the harsh conditions on Mars, and allows access to a unique ability.  In times of extremity, it also allows the individual it is implanted in to evolve, altering even his fundamental physical nature).  Flame Control/Creation (the ability he gained by implanting his Patch).
Personality: Kind-hearted, loving, compassionate, brave, openly perverted, persistent, self-sacrificing, cannot understand sorrow (and thus can't feel real empathy for the emotion), passionate.
History: As a young child, he suffered from heart disease, which would have normally condemned him to an early death.  However, a sudden donor saved his life, leaving him at loose ends.  He then encountered Kokoro in his dreams and gave over his ability to feel sorrow in order to allow her to live within him.  Having no dream of his own, he saw it as his duty to fulfill Kokoro's dream of going to Mars and worked hard, pushing himself beyond most normal limits to gain a spot on the Japanese part of the crew, along with Shizuku.  He and Shizuku formed a close bond of friendship and camaraderie during the testing and training periods, and together they were found in cold sleep capsules a century after the collapse of the first colonization effort, whereupon they agreed to join the new society (born from the second effort).  While he is often ebullient and outgoing, his natural tendency is to accommodate his partners and friends where matters don't infringe on his personal boundaries.  Despite his apparently foolish behavior at times, he is actually quite intelligent (he had to be, to pass the tests to get on the colonization project).
    4.
    Name: Zephyr Colerain
    VN: Silverio Vendetta
Skills/Abilities/Talents/Powers: Personality gap (While his normally lazy, cowardly, hedonistic, and generally pessimistic, when he is cornered he transforms into a murderous killer who will use any means at his disposal - ranging from his powers as an Esperanto to insults and emotional manipulation - to kill his enemy, ruthlessly and without remorse).  Esperanto (He is an enhanced soldier, capable of incredible feats of strength and agility, and he regenerates far more quickly than the average man.).  Vibration Control (His unique Esperanto ability allows him to manipulate vibrations - ranging from resonance with physical matter to microwaves).  Unmatched Assassin (There is literally no more skilled assassin within the setting.  His cowardly nature and ruthlessness when cornered ironically made him an ideal silent killer once trained.  His willingness to use the dirtiest of tactics without hesitation further enhanced this ability.)
Personality: Cowardly, loving, normal, vicious, pragmatic, self-centered, hates and admires glory-seekers, hedonistic, procrastinator, likes to destroy those more capable than himself (think male version of Rusalka from Dies Irae in some ways).
History: Born in the violent slums of Adler, when his sister vanished he joined the army and was found to be compatible with the Esperanto enhancement surgery.  As he proved to be a perfect spy, assassin, and saboteur, he ended up assigned as an adjunct to Chitose (the head of Libra, the internal affairs part of Adler's army), where he became known as Lucallion (apparently meaning silver wolf in one of the local dialects).  Just before the Disaster, he was assigned as a bodyguard to Millia's family, and during the disaster he deserted the army, taking Millia with him and destroying Chitose's eye.  Since then, he has stayed hidden in the capital, carrying out odd jobs for the Oligarchy's representative and the Red Light District's Madame Eve.
    5.
    Name: Kashima Toshirou
    VN: Vermilion Bind of Blood
Powers/Abilities/Skills/Talents:  Vampirism (As one of the undead, Toshirou can only be reliably killed by destroying his heart, and as long as he has drunk blood recently he will regenerate from just about any wound.  He is also many times stronger, faster, and more agile than any human.).  Lack of Arrogance (there isn't a scrap of arrogance or overconfidence in Toshirou's nature.  He is seemingly invulnerable to the instincts that drive  most vampires to disregard humans and believe older vampires will automatically defeat younger ones).  Master of the Sword (Even in life, Toshirou was a skilled swordsman, but he continued to train himself both in battle and otherwise after discarding his humanity - once again distinguishing himself from other vampires - becoming an unmatched master of combat with the blade.).  Midnight Blue (Toshirou's unique ability as a vampire, allowing him to control magnetism through his blood, enhancing the cutting edge and protecting his sword from damage while accelerating or slowing his own body relative to magnetic metals present).  Craftiness (Toshirou is unique amongst vampires for using a Hunter-like method against his enemies, using feints and tricks to support his raw power).  Patience (Toshirou has no lack of patience, and this quality sometimes allows him to defeat enemies that would normally be beyond him).
Personality: Patient, cold, pragmatic, crafty, cunning, ruthless, compassionate, self-aware, stoic.
History: As a human, he served under a daimyo just before the collapse of the Tokugawa.  He was engaged to marry his lord's daughter, Mikage, but when Mikage was instead about to be given to another man, he decapitated his own lord and eloped with Mikage.  Unfortunately, when he tried to stow away on a ship bound for Europe, Mikage was turned by a powerful master vampire and they were tossed back on shore.  For a time, he was able to protect Mikage as a human, but when it became apparent that he would age and die before her, he asked to be turned and she assented.  For a time, he and Mikage survived, fending off offers from other vampires of alliance and membership within a nebulous, half-formed Japanese Diaspora, but that ended when White Pile (Ariya's teacher and predecessor) attacked them, killing Mikage and shooting him in the heart with a silver bullet.
He then eventually made his way to Foggy Bottom, where he helped Nina overcome her opponents and consolidate the Diaspora, eventually becoming the Diaspora's Guardian of the Law.
