To be clear about this: Piracy is not an advantage or great in any way. And I can see the thought process of "well great, 200.000 people just STOLE our product". I get it, it sucks.
However, you can't make the mistake of seeing these, lets say, 200.000 downloads as "lost sales". Because they are not lost sales. They aren't lost because nothing was ever sold. They are nothing. If you sold, lets say 500.000 copies of your product and 200.000 also pirated your shit, getting rid of piracy would still mean you only sold 500.000.
The only way to actually turn the pirate numbers into customer numbers, is to make pirating more of a hassle than purchasing. And no, that is not accomplished by 23,7 different accounts and 4 spy programs connected to the software,  like game developers seem to think. Put it on steam for 10, 20, what have you, bucks. Slap a discount on during release week. Don't break their balls, tickle them. (which also why the "make VNs more expensive" idea is up there with the dumbest plans I've ever read).

Wew. There is just about no conceivable way I'm picking anyone other than Monster Hunter girl first. You would have to introduce a heroine who's super into Ace Attorney within the next 15 lines to change my mind.

It feels like yesterday when I bought The Grand Design and fell in love with his explanations of the physics of our world. I read his stuff right around the time when I was a Kaku fan. Stephen explained in that book why String Theory did not make much practical sense. He also talks about why creationism doesn't work, and lays down the philosophy of science.
Many people at like they know science.
Some dismiss it as though it's some kind of religion. However, it's a methodology. A methodology built upon fallibilism and falsifiability.

Stephen Hawking once talked about the creation of life where he said something I quote once in a while. The theory goes that there used to be some pools of mud, much like we see today in volcanic areas. In here amino acids were floating around, bumping into each other, joining and falling apart. At some point they by chance hit a combination, which formed something we view as life and it started replicating itself. Critics says it's too unlikely to happen by chance. Stephen Hawking said if the probability of something happening is greater than 0, it will eventually happen if you try enough times regardless of how unlikely it is. The chance of winning lotto is close to zero, yet somebody wins nearly every week. For life to begin, it only needs to hit the right combo once. Not much happened on Earth at the time, meaning there would not be a problem if we would have to wait 100-200 million years for that one time event. Of all the great stuff Stephen Hawking have said, this one is likely the one, which means the most to me because it applies to everything and it touches the core issues of probability.

Stephen Hawking also came up with the "mad scientist paradox" (look it up if you like), which shoots down all theories of time travel. Or rather as he puts it, all travel back in time. Approaching the speed of light will make time pass slower, meaning in theory you can spend 10 years traveling in space, age 10 years and come back to Earth to see 20 years have passed. The problem with this approach is that you need to be near a super massive black hole and the closest one is at the center of the galaxy, meaning actually using this approach involves some logistics problems. Speaking of black holes, Stephen Hawking came up with the name in his attempt to explain astronomy to the general public.

Stephen Hawking died on 14th (aka 3.14 or π day), which happens to be Einstein's birthday. It's somehow fitting to connect those two because both of them did the unlikely feat of being a scientist, who became known in pub culture.

I'm not sure if it's completely appropriate to mention right now, but he did have a few misses in his last years, such as fearing alien invasion, requesting planning to evacuate the solar system before the sun burns out and becoming anti-Brexit with a public statement about it being bad for science, without really telling why. The problem I have with the latter is not about being pro- or anti-Brexit, but rather that it's politics and politics are about opinions. We do not want people thinking they can take their personal baseless opinions into science. It's a big enough problem as it is without providing fuel for people to do so. I have decided to remember him for his scientific achievements and not those missteps.

Well, we will all also remembering him for the wheelchair. He was diagnosed at age 21 and told he would live just a few years more. He very strong willed decided to carry on regardless of how bad things would turn out and he lived until he was 76. That alone is an impressive feat, though I'm not sure how journalists came up with "3 times as long as expected". "a few years"*3 is to me like 10 years, not 55.

Well, honestly I am not really interested in another Moege VN with no Drama at the moment! I will play it sometime if I want to read a heart-warming romance Story with comedy. But I need drama in romance story's...
But I hope the translation will be good because I am a little bit looking forward to read Sanoba Witch.

Lesiak and Mr Poltroon said most of what I wanted to say, but I think I can add a bit more.
Mostly... since when we can only enjoy a VN if it have stellar writing? I really enjoyed playing DDLC, the meta aspect was done really well, you can see how much care was put in the making of that game, there's some good messages buried there even too, it was a super fun read for me! It was not a masterpiece, but I don't regret one bit the time I spent with it.
I also gave good ratings for VNs in VNDB because the h-scenes were good, the bad endings were fun, above all the experience were good! And I'm sorry, I doubt I would ever want to read Narcissu because terminal illness isn't my cup of tea, it's really is a heavy topic, and other people surely agree.
Of course, I'm all in for more serious story driven VNs, they are my favorite, but those others have their place too. Except shovelware stuff, those can burn.

The point is that a lot of what people criticize as being bad writing in VNs are just things they don't understand the appeal of. Wild tonal shifts, very slow-paced comfortable happy slice of life that's not centered around jokes, a melting pot of chaotic confliciting themes and ideas, tons of description, emotional surrealism, the silent MC, etc.
Then you get all these hack 4chan writers jerking each other off by saying "I could totally write that and make a fortune" while they don't even understand how to make those story traits work and what they're going for, both for videogame and VN writing.
I don't think western storytelling is bad, I just don't like it. The people who actually make a point to say that all of the best things about VNs are VN writers being incompetent though... Not sure whether I should laugh or cry at it.

I have to fully agree with Thyndd. There's a good rule saying that "90% of every medium/genre is shit" and I'm pretty sure it also applies to stuff created by people active on 4chan's literary board. I also don't have any confidence that someone who's able to write a decent novel will automatically be able to write a good VN script. It's a different medium, requiring different skills and approach. What that first post represents is simply an elitist delusion of an "actual writer" frustrated that mass audience does what mass audience always did, rather than appreciate his awesome craftsmanship.
And there's a lot of niches within VN audience, I don't think I've seen many "greatly written, but completely unappreciated titles". Especially with the still small westers market, if something is really good, it will find its way to the consumers, regardless of the masses of people consuming cheap, trashy porn VNs. Also, DDLC is not an empty meme vessel. It's a well-crafted and well-though-out VN, made by an author with a lot of talent and passion for the medium. Feel free to hate it, if you have to, but don't try to put it in one row with Sakura games, it's just distasteful.
EDIT: And just as a sidenote, Narcissu was downloaded by close to 400k people on Steam. That's just 70k less than Sakura Spirit and it's a game about dying of terminal illness (which is the reason I'm postponing reading it for years and years now). How exactly is it ignored?

Yeah, sure, let's talk about the current state of literature, where 50 shades of grey and Twilight are best-sellers among youngsters... fuck off.
Honestly, that guy COULD have a point, but he doesn't. For one, because he comes across as despective and rude, thus not willing to attend to reasons. I can't stand snobism.
There are badly written VNs and they appeal to part of the public, duh. The same could be said about any other medium.

Sekien no Inganock has some romantic themes but not nearly as centric as in Gahkthun, and as for Sharnoth, I'm not that sure as I haven't gotten that far at all, but I think close to none.

DearDrops is another very good one. I'd suggest giving it a shot.

For Miagete, there's a project to restoring the H scenes ongoing, so if you interested you can visit the thread below.
As for the recommendations, well apparently you already read most of Slice of Life VNs that was translated. That said, I can still recommend Kanon, Air, and Little Busters since apparently you still didn't read those three - for Little Busters one you better play Steam version because it add three new additional routes. For other recommendations, maybe Shuffle will be interesting if you want a very light VN. Also since you like G-Senjou, perhaps you'll be interested to try Sharin as well - by the way you can avoid harem route if you dislike that. For last recommendations, I guess Galaxy Angel trilogy should be a good one although it have the RTS gameplay though. Hope the recommendations will be help.

Grisaia no Rakuen https://vndb.org/v7724 had it's unrated version released recently.
For something with a huge emotional wallop, try Clannad (it's a massive timesink though).
Maybe check out Lucy - The Eternity she wished for https://vndb.org/v16743 . It's pretty short apparently, I just started playing it myself.

Less Moe, more serious and dramatic!
And maybe Rewrite &  Tsujidou-san no Jun'ai Road (almost finished. At the moment you can play 3 Routes and the last one will be finished in April)
But I would also recommend you to read some Yuri VN's

Well, I'm not that well verse in SoL drama as I've usually bored by it, but I can recommend some VNs with more of an SoL focus that still have a lot going on.
Enigma and Himawari would be pretty entertaining reads. Check both of those two out.

Indirectly I suppose. Moege can actually have a lot of little lessons about living the day to day that can help out in a stressful situation, and they themselves are also great stress relievers, being light and fluffy.
They also inspired me to start Moege February, where I shall read only Moege (and maybe an occasional Charage) in defiance of those who would defy us.

I agree with this! Chrono Clock was really good and I loved Michiru's route. Therefore I am really looking forword to Hapymaher.
I have a question are Yuri VN's also Moege?
I like to read Lesbian Love Story more than normal Moege. My heart pounds like crazy everytime I hear that a good Yuri VN gets an english translation
But Moege didn't change my life! However I like to read VN's with Romance and a good Drama.

A picture paints a thousand words.

I have nothing to say but that's exactly what I am thinking.
If H-Scenes no longer exist anymore then maybe there would be more great VN, more VN's in english and better publisher and MoeNovel wouldn't exist in the first place. Because they don't have a reason to delete the H-Scenes anymore.
I actually don't care if there are no H-Scenes anymore because most of the time I skipp them but I don't like censorship^^
The only H-Scenes I liked was in Yumiko's Route in Grisaia

As for me, I definitely would. On the other hand, I'm pretty sure it would lead into some unhealthy changes in the industry, and I'm not sure if the new VNs would be as appealing to me as the old ones. Nobody really mentions it, but for me one of the main advantages VNs have compared to other media is that they are automatically 18+, so they don't have to deal with all this crap like toning down violent scenes and touching extremely controversial topics.
