Nerathim reacted to Kosakyun in Vn Reading Club - January 2016: Gahkthun
I finished the whole thing last night before I slept.
I decided against posting about it before I slept, since apparently I lost the ability to form coherent words after reading the last few scenes. Honestly, I did not expect that. Everything just exploded at my face. Like ugh. It just gushes deep inside of me, you know?
Anyway, I'll put my thoughts about Chapter 6 to 8 for now. I'll try to provide a more coherent reaction to whatever I finished reading. Don't worry, it wasn't bad. It was good imo.
    Here goes Chapter 6:
    Chapter 7:
    Chapter 8:
    Chapter 9:
I put Chapter 8 and 9 because they're pretty short. Anyway, enjoy the rest of the novels, guys. I really enjoyed reading it, and am glad that it was the one picked by the club. It's kinda funny that I finished it even before the initial impression week started, but eh. That's because Gahkthun was picked, I guess.

I'm in chapter 4 of Gahkthun, which is still excellent. It really hits on all cylinders - plot, characters, art, all are great. The music isn't my favorite all the time, but it definitely has its moments, and even the tracks I didn't especially like at first are growing on me with familiarity.
I can see why people speak so highly of this translation. The diction of characters is both well-chosen and consistent, and nicely varied to showcase the big social gap between Tesla and, well, everybody else. A simple example that nicely illustrates: twice so far, when Neon does something that makes her look particularly dumb, Tesla uses a stock Japanese phrase including "baka" that would usually get translated as "you look like an idiot", while the translation reads "It makes you look like an imbecile". That word choice is perfect for Tesla. It would be out of place for anybody else in this VN, or in pretty much any other setting, but it fits his character like a glove. Overall, there's a clear, consistent hand behind the translation with a real flair for English. The language isn't obtuse or anything like that; it's just plain well-written.
The copy editing quality is also top-notch. I don't think I've seen even a single spelling or grammar error so far, whereas in most professional translations, I'm used to seeing quite a few. Poor copy editing is my mortal enemy, since it pulls me out of the immersion, so Gahkthun has been quite a pleasant experience on all fronts.

Hanachirasu is a revenge story developed by Nitro+, featuring many dark themes and amoral characters. Whilst it was made in 2005, it has withstood the test of time in all aspects and is an excellent, albeit short read. Read the review here!
Since this was the first VN review I've written, please leave feedback on what could be improved. Thank you and have a nice day.

I bought it from a local weeb store, who imported a bunch of Nitroplus products at my request. Even got my hands on the Kikokugai OST and Nitrous Oxide Vol.1 and 3. This should be the correct link.

The cover art is confusing, being based on the non-canon joke route. You could also just get it off of Nitroplus' website.

Man, those new characters sprites, it seems that not only Tsukihime suffers from severe regression.    I don't even want to think about the new soundtrack, YU-NO's main composer is dead and I doubt his genius could be easily reproduced. And "remastering" the old 16-bit music would make it lose its appeal.
As for the translation, the TLWiki's one is already great.

These aren't in any particular order.

Light (this will probably never be anything but a wish)
Akatsuki Works (If Akabeisoft2 gets localization coverage, this company will probably be dragged along with it)
Propeller (yes, it is a will subsidiary, but it stands on its own in terms of the number of kamige)
Type-Moon (a partnership with a localization company would serve to ensure the local releases of its games, for the Japanese-incompetent)
    Giga (for the Baldr series)
Eushully (for the Ikusa Megami series)
Cotton Soft (for a number of awesome games they've released over the years, including Reconquista and Owaru Sekai to Birthday)
Tigre Soft (for the Reminiscence series and the other interesting VNs they have lined up)
Purple Soft (c'mon people... don't you want to see localized Hapymaher and Mirai Nostalgia?)
Rosebleu (for the large number of hilarious games)

Edit: The Baldr series is the only thing of value from Giga, so I'd be pissed if they localized any of their other games, lol.

English isn't my native language and it feels good because I have a hard time seeing how Ixrec's translations are awful for instance.   Still, I have read some Shakespeare in english and I didn't find the prose itself to be that stunning, for me it's just some text with a bunch of old vocabulary, it feels weird to say that, I guess I don't have the sensibility. Fortunately, good prose isn't necessary to an interesting story, I would hardly call that a major drawback imo. That said, I don't encourage machine translation and shoddy writing but I would choose a fan-translation of an untranslated VN over a profesional translation for an already fan-translated VN.

It's a little easier to write when you're not required to write much prose. VNs are novels and contain more prose than RPGs, which is where most of the problems typically lie. Baldur's Gate and Planescape tried to imitate more D&D campaigns, which contain a ... different kind of storytelling.

Torment contains an enjoyable, mature story surrounded by fairly boring gameplay Of course my opinion is coloured, I haven't played it for a while and my memory is notoriously BAD (you have no idea) and when I do play RPGs it's more for the RPG experience as a whole.

Finished Rose Guns Days, the ending was a bit lackluster and I think Ryukishi had some of his priorities backwards but everything else is outstanding. We definitely need more VN with unique atmosphere and casting like that, it's more than just very entertaining, it's also super interesting and I learned a lot of things about post-war Japan and others details.  About the OST, well, it's 07th Expansion, it's really great and might be as good as Umineko if the latter didn't have so much tracks.
Read it, RGD doesn't get enough visibility!

It's well paced, the soundtrack is even more amazing, same thing for the atmosphere and the backgrounds. I mean, it's just great, nothing more nothing less.

Grisaia's common route is pretty damn fun and as far as I know comedy isn't a flaw in itself, not to mention that the jokes in Grisaia don't rely only on overused and tiring japanese jokes that are in too much VNs.

My biggest unpopular opinion is that Steins;Gate is not nearly as good as everyone says it is. I went in with really high expectations. After about an hour of playing I wanted to strangle Okabe. Pretty much all of the characters annoyed me to different extents, especially Mayuri. The only character I genuinely liked was Kurisu. She was actually a really good, interesting character. If only the rest of the characters could have been like her... And the plot was draggy. The only things going for that VN are the beautiful art and Kurisu. I have no idea how I even got through the entire thing.
