If you've only read a several untranslated VNs, then you're likely not yet ready to translate. Especially not a decently sized title with a semblance of plot like Tasogare.
As for tools themselves, back in the day, I think I saw somewhere on the net tools specifically designed for Tasogare. Try googling and seeing if you can find it. Right now I can't dig out anything, but I am fairly sure I did see someone sharing tools for Tasogare somewhere.
There's a way to figure out the encryption on Kirikiri VNs too, but I forgot the method. Someone on Github shared it back in the day, so try googling it with "Github" in search terms.

Funny fact: a guy that lent me his laptop during the MLP con a few days ago, where I was talking about fan VNs, had like a full Type-Moon library there. But other then that, the only Poles I've seen being into VNs are on this Forum (whole two of them, other than me). When I spoke about VNs at university, to other people interested in fan studies, they only had a vague idea of what VNs are. I'd want to hold a panel on VNs on Pyrkon one day, that would be a good way to find out whether there are any hardcore VN fans among Polish otaku. :>
Yup, this is the reason I don't see much potential for translating VNs into languages other than English and Spanish, Western market-wise. Obviously, it's always cool to make your project more accessible, especially if it's small hobbyist VNs, but I can't say I'd find doing such translating work appealing if there's barely any target audience for it.

VNs had, still have, and will have a niche community for all time to come. They are never gonna be as popular as other games or other mediums of entertainment. No matter where or when. I don't think they are even popular that much in Japan nowadays, much less to speak of other countries.

    Yes, very true.
I guess I have an issue with the fact that they are trying to remain an "all-ages" company, yet they localize tons of eroge, including games as fetishy as Nukitashi. (A game they cannot possibly make an all-ages version of, and therefore CANNOT sell on their own store!) Of course, I guess they could just sell it on sites like JAST and cut their losses for that particular title, but you have to admit, this is kind of weird. Why localize this if they know they can't even sell it.
I just find it so puzzling that a company that wants to stay so mainstream and "all-age" friendly is so dead set on doing eroge in the first place. It really would make more sense for them to use the "Panty Press" brand like a separate company, like Sekai did with Denpasoft. No matter how hard they try, they won't be able to avoid the fact that they ARE selling eroge, lots of them. I just don't see this all-age only site as a good idea, considering the amount of eroge they localize.

    Hello everyone,
I'm back with another progress update.
First of all, about the translation... I've finished translating all of the scripts for the story! (Yay! XD)
Now, this doesn't mean that the game is fully translated. There are still many things that need to be translated such as the Eushully Room, the character information, etc. I'd say around 85% of the whole game have been translated.
Next, around 1/3 of the menu images have been edited.
Chapter 2 is still in tlc and editing.
The in-game terminologies list is also being translated.
I think that's about it this time.
While this is quite a big milestone for us, it'll still be a while before the game is fully translated. Please bear with us until then ^^.
Thank you, and see you next time ^^!

Man, this is so weird to me. I guess part of it might be you're doing it for cash and they're stingy, but still...

If you're going to edit fan translations rather than trying to go professional (which I can't recommend, though nothing is impossible in this industry I guess lol), the skill in interpreting 'fantranslationese' and translating it to English gets much more relevant. Also, learning Japanese helps - and then you can always realize you should actually be a translator instead, fun stuff!

I have nothing to offer that can help, but I do have a couple of opinions on this topic.
Whilst I ordinarily would add to the pile of 'don't become an editor if you aren't a native',  for this particular field that are Visual Novels, I have to say: Go for it.
There are so many good stories in Western VNs and even some fan translations that are simply unbearable due to how they use and misuse English. If your efforts end up alleviating these cases even a little, I'd say they were worthwhile. Maybe to some 'making crap a bit less crappy' doesn't sound like a goal, but I assure you, as part of the casual plebs that consume anything and everything without caring about the original material or anything like that, just that little bit of improvement makes a huge difference.

Disregard "non-native English speakers shouldn't be editors" comment. While it's true that it's preferable for an editor to be native in the language they're editing text for, it's definitely not an absolute necessity. You can be good at editing even if you are not a native... as long as your English doesn't completely suck.

No one ever made any in-depth guides on editing visual novels. It's so niche that even those who have some decent skills editing them didn't have time/will to write up any in-depth guides. However, that's not to say there aren't any. You can find some old editing... I'd like to call them "tips"... on this very forum. You can find these in Darbury's blog and Fred's blog. Not sure who else had them, but there's probably a couple of more that I may have forgotten.
Other than that, you may want to look into what I like to call "generic editing guides", not specifically aimed at editing Japanese media. There's a couple of books on this matter that you can find easily on Google. Look for tips on good writing and such. That said, the most important editing guide that nobody can really offer you is... to be a creative writer. Actually, most editors aren't creative. You may get away with being a "shit editor" in this scene, but if you really want to become a good one, you need to practice a lot of writing and having a general idea at what good prose sounds like. And to achieve this... you need to read a lot. Preferably works with stellar writing (up to the point of real literature). But if you want to be just another editor, then that's easy. Anyone can join this scene as an editor, based on what I observed. Even as a pro. Yes, the barrier is that low. I guess you just need to know English well enough, and they'll hire you.
Another thing you may want to look up for is feedback. Edit something and then ask people around (both pro and amateur) what do they think of it. If they are any helpful, they'll let you know where you screwed up or where they think you can improve, etc. etc. Just collect all these tips for a while, and you'll get the "editing guide for VNs" that you are looking for.
For example, sometimes you'll get feedback from TLers themselves on what they think is a good editor. Like, this one for example, written by Quof. The only real way to learn editing is to practice it and ask for feedback. I don't really know any other way. Not like anyone has ever written a very detailed guide on editing for VNs. So you just gotta make do with what's available.

Well, announcements are announced, so let's see how they look... The order in which they appear more or less reflects my interest in them.
    Excited:
    Interested:
    Indifferent:
    Won't Play:

Now, let's do a counter for each publisher to see who had the most interesting stuff for me.
So yeah, this was a good round of announcements! Good thing I'm part of the casual pleb audience that actually makes these publishers some monies.
If you didn't like this convention then... sucks to be you!

Well, I'm the last person to trust about translation quality in general, but I did feel kind of messy. It felt like I was reading a fan-translated VN rather than an official translation. I still wonder, does  this sentence look okay to a fluent English speaker? I personally cannot understand how exactly you're supposed to laugh in English or in any other language.
Oh, and there also some very obvious mistranslations in the in-game menu. I just cannot understand how they didn't catch them during the testing. You can see them in that screenshot: pressing 'disable text skip' or 'disable auto-mod' actually enables them. I don't know, maybe they updated the game after that (I downloaded it on the first day after the release). Does MG send any notifications when they update their products? I've never got any, at least, but my library on their site isn't that big.
Edit. And here's a bit more obvious mistake.

I'm pretty sure there should be 'flora' instead of 'fauna' here. It's been a while, but I don't think there were any animals there...

Praise the Lord for more Rance announcements! I don't mind waiting (as long as it doesn't reach Sumaga levels of waiting), so news like this always excite me! Can't believe we'd be at this point where most of the titles have translations. Arunaru and Maria really were the saviors!
...Might give Funbag Fantasy a try, just because the artist commented on how it could be the next Rance or something. It better be that good, because my only experience prior to reading the visual novels related to it is its H-OVA.
All the other announcements, I'll read someday... When I get a stable source of income....

I was never disappointed by any of AX convention announcements so far. Maybe because I am a type of reader who enjoys reading everything (except BL and Bara I guess). From every publisher, I have at least one title to get hyped about. Amatsutsumi is definitely the biggest announcement from Sekai. And they somehow got Feng (although they didn't pick up the titles I want from them). I'd argue that Eiyuu Senki Gold is a fine announcement from JAST (I didn't play the first one yet, but I intend to play it at some point). MG announcing more Waffle nukige is great, and I am quite hype about Mugen Renkan (darkge, give me more quality darkgeee!!!). And Sol Press didn't disappoint me either. They got 3 Windmill titles. All medium to long sized. I don't know much about the titles themselves, but I don't think they are bad at all.
In short, I am not disappointed at all.

I'm absolutely sure that Sol is having some financial difficulties but at the same time "one release in a month" is a fairly normal practice, it's not something extraordinary by itself. That's what MangaGamer is doing (or at least consistently tries to if there are no unexpected troubles) for the last couple of years.
Sekai's Majokoi, 9-nine- ep. 2, Nanairo Reincarnation, Baldr Sky and Ley Line 2-3 are all currently set to release in the second half of 2019
While I did say that "one release in a month" is nothing extraordinary by itself, if everyone on the market were to suddenly use this schedule for half a year, it would surely look spectacular. But nah, I'm sure we have nothing to worry about.
I'm not an expert on the market but I don't believe it will collapse or anything. Sure, some will titles will probably underperform (they always do) but this market is so niche and passionate that I doubt that they will go deep under the red line plus steam will help to add sales over time, steam sales are often not front-loaded at all. Honestly, western eroge market is very weird, inconsistent and at times almost too random for analysis. You can have a big hit and then fail miserably with its sequel or a similar project. A lot rides on whether you can suddenly get under the spotlight (not even necessarily during the initial release) and saddle that wave to the good sales. Most titles don't and underperform from what I can gather, besides it's almost impossible to amass actually good sales without steam which is, again, not even necessarily a front-loaded platfrorm. I'm not sure if the success rate is going to be any different when we have a few times more VNs than usual, I'd argue that the overall ratio probably won't change much, those crumbs the industry mostly survives on will likely remain the same crumbs.
Not to mention that I fully expect half of the releases to peacefully migrate into the 2020 as usual.
