NO IT IS NOT! This is my ALL TIME FAVOURITE GAME and I have played it for a year straight now. Bought the JP Future tone when it was released, and then I bought the EU Future Tone when it was released recently.
I also play X, f and f2.
My boyfriend is NOT into jpop at all, or rhythm games. But guess what? After I got the arcade controller he got completely hooked. lol. I REALLY recommend Hatsune Miku <3
And also, of all the ones I know that are addicted to HM, they are all males

Depend on your taste I think. Although looking it objectively, both of Tomoyo After and Harmonia were getting quite good average scores. But if I may give some suggestion, perhaps you could try Nurse Love Addiction if you okay with yuri.

No, it's just that two of Ariurotl most hated heroines were from Hoshimemo. As for Hoshimemo was had likeable character or not, it's up to you to find it if I may say here.

Let's see, how about Yoake and Shuffle there? And if you want more slice of life then I think first Da Capo would be good for starting the franchise. Hope it'll be help.

Koiken Otome fits the criteria well in my opinion. The art is very nice, the cast is pretty great and it's lighthearted.

Hoshizora no Memoria.
Don't know if you've read that, but it's long, has strong cast, it's ambitious, and the art... depends from person to person, I liked it a lot, don't know about you.

Kindred Spirits Karakara (on the short side, but not too short, IMO) Maybe Koihime Musou? It's neither slice-of-life nor HD by any definition, but it's got likeable heroines all day long and lovely art, especially given its age. -
