These are closer to Narrative-heavy western games than OELVNs.  While the argument of what counts as a VN is too over-done for the moment for now we'll discard the ones on the fringe.
 
More likely than not it could be a comfort thing - since most VN writers have usually obtained some form of influence from the VN market in Japan, thus there instincts will head in that direction, regardless of general writer ability (except, perhaps, if the writer is a very strong setting-person or if the plot involves some form of a political hook more easily done in, say, the US.)

Aside from that, there's also the otaku/anime demographic - an anime art style set in Japan says different things than an anime art style set in America, and if thought through as an intentional aspect can signal the type of story coming across in advance.
 
I'd say it's generally a 'default choice' at this point, and perhaps we don't have any OELVN writers with setting as their strong point yet.  I'm a character-focus person myself, at least.

As some of you are aware, I've been living on the Caribbean island of Dominica doing medical research with a med school there until my next semester started. Tropical storm Erika has trashed the island: we went to bed on Wednesday having heard that the storm would be minor and pass before we woke up, but then the next morning we found our rented house flooded ~3 inches and the street outside had become a river.
 
I'm told that there has been some news coverage, so you may have seen some of the bridges collapse, etc. It's been a crazy, crazy few days. We were stranded in the middle of a canyon from Thursday to this morning without phone access, internet, or water. The power kept going off as -- I'm told -- the generators in Portsmouth didn't have enough fuel to work without a steady stream from the capitol (which was cut off due to bridge collapses).
 
Nobody was killed near us, but there's something crazy like 20 dead and >100 missing people across the island. I joked Thursday morning that the internet gods really didn't want me working on the site, apparently, but the situation escalated so quickly that it just doesn't seem as funny anymore. Fortunately we've got water and food enough to last a week or so, but there's a good chance that the Portsmouth generators will fail later this afternoon and, again, I'll be stranded without internet/phone/power/water.
 
I'll post pictures when I'm able. Just wanted to report in and let you know that I haven't died (yet). I've got something like 900 emails to go through (downloading them to my tablet so even if the power goes off I'll be able to read them), but I'm going to hit them all. If you have an urgent problem please email me. If there's a true emergency I'm willing to take your phone number and call you (one of the phone providers here should be able to work even if the power goes off) (not sure I believe it, though), tho that's probably a bit of overkill.

Your sig though, I think your rig is a bit under-powered to play the most recent VNs out in the market.

Wow, this is really good!  The eyes especially, quite a lot of expression there.
 
We're working on a VN on our end at the moment.  I'm a little busy today, but I'll talk to my editor soon and see how things develop.  We're a bit behind at the moment but things should start to be picking up in the near future.  Should I send a PM once I get that sorted out?

Also, Tokyo Babel is right up there with Dies Irae and Devils Devel Concept in my top ten, lol.  The story does resemble an SMT game in the sense that it is post-apocalypse... the difference is that the demons, humans, and angels are all equally screwed and desperate to find a way to survive (and not be driven insane).

When do you think we'll have a demo?  Progress seems to be coming nicely, concept-wise it's certainly unique, that said we don't have much to base the writing quality off of, or at the very least something to give feedback off so the final product is stronger.  Is it somewhere on the priority list or are there other things to be taken care of first?

Confession:  I was watching Detective Conan this one time, and I thought I saw a translation error.  It was actually the piece of evidence that was mentioned near the end of the episode ;-;
