Wishful Localization Dreams

I woke up at 5am this morning because I spent yesterday sick in bed. That gave me plenty of time to ponder life's many questions. What makes us human? Why are we on this planet? How did the first amino acids form, and over time create us? Why the fuck did the West only get one Sakura Taisen game?

SW_Sega_Saturn_cover.jpg

Well, only one of these things really matters. Seriously, Sakura Taisen games look so freaking cool. Many hours were logged into Sakura Taisen V (Sakura Wars: So Long My Love) and my attempts to woo Gemini, the cowgirl living with her horse, were met with failure because I accidentally courted the attorney chick from Harlem (see what I did there?). The battle system was a blast and the dating sim aspects were so much more fun than the simplistic system found in Persona 3/4. On top of that, the setting is like a wet dream, with the full series being set in 1920's Japan, Paris, and New York City. Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha games were also set in 1920's Tokyo (yet another reason I love it as well), but we here in the West did not receive any of the other Sakura Taisen games other than V, which is a damn shame. On a side note, the ARMS battle system survives today in Valkryia Chronicles, which was made by much of the same team behind the Sakura Taisen franchise.

Another member of my localization wish list of games I know I'll never get to play, are the early Atelier games from Gust. This is more of a "I just want it to look at it" as I'm sure the game play is somewhat dated in any of the pre- Iris trilogy games. While NISA, and KT have been on top of the localization efforts of Gust games recently, the West is still missing 5 main line Atelier games, dating between 1997-2004, and virtually all of the side entries to the franchise, aside from Atelier Annie on the DS, are also missing. Luckily, each Atelier series tells a story usually in a trilogy, and stand alone from the other entries of the game, so it isn't as if we are missing chunks of story luckily.  I mean, how fucking terrible would it be to see the 2nd game in a trilogy released, and nothing else? How damn incompetent would a localization company be to do something like that?

Xenosaga_Episode_II_-_Jenseits_von_Gut_u

The Xenosaga series is my all time favorite JRPG, and Namco Bandai, in their infinite wisdom, decided to only release Xenosaga Episode II in Europe. To their credit, they did release the game with a DVD of all the cutscenes from the previous entry, but they then failed to release Episode III in Europe, leaving European fans twiddling their thumbs in mild indifference/annoyance to the whole thing. Good news is that torrents are available of the cut scenes from all 3 games. It only totals about 20 hours or so, and are also available on Youtube. That said, mech battles in Episode 3 are a blast, after being horrible for the first two entries, and atrocious for the 2nd entry. How cruel is that? The only one in the franchise that Europe got, is the shitty one.

So, whats on your localization wishlist of games that you will never see released in your region?

Mother 3 / EarthBound 2

EarthBound is an amazing game that taught me about absurdity at a very young age. It's fun, funny, and only feels grindy when you decide you absolutely must get a Sword of Kings. That experience also teaches you about the gambler's fallacy. 1/127 drop rates suck. Anyway, relatedly, I'm also looking forward to this beautiful-looking fan project that's still in the works: http://www.mother4game.com/

At least it managed to get what seems to be a high quality fan TL. Still, nothing like having the real thing.

If not, fairytale requiem, because I LOVE the visual style, but it's probably too weird and un-nukigelike for MG to even consider picking it up

Gahkthun barely had any h scenes and it still got picked up by Mangagamer. I can still see Fairytale Requiem getting picked up if the partnership doesn't end.

Whether it sells well, that's a different story.

Fairytale Requiem is one of the most artistic and obscure VNs I've ever seen.

It literally looks like a children's storybook, so I doubt it'd sell, considering how well 'artistic' VNs sell in the West.

But even so I'd be glad as all hell if it happens, but I doubt it.

I'm looking forward to Mother 4 as well. But hey, on the bright side, the existing fan translation at least dodges the bullet of Nintendo's censorship tendencies. I was honestly pretty surprised how many differences there are between the Japanese and English Mother 2.

I'd love it if we got the ps3 version of Tales of Vesperia released here (On PC I suppose since ps3 is at the end of its life-cycle). I don't own an xbox 360, plus that version is missing a sizable chunk of content compared to the ps3 version, and while I did import and japanese copy, It would be great if it officially got released in English.

In my opinion, it's rare to see any romance game sold in English. Anything praiseworthy has often buried under porn-without-plot titles, and there have been too many translations which barely showed an effort. Furthermore, companies and fans have thrown around terms such as "hentai game" and "dating sim" quite a bit. The first term is especially inappropriate when discussing worksafe titles, and the second is inappropriate when discussing stories which don't have any simulation elements. So yeah... this is why I was shocked when the original Hakuouki VN was released in English, rather than just the animated spinoff, *and* on a console.

I heard about the Sakura Wars franchise as far back as 1998. After waiting over a decade for any iteration of the games in English, I chose to purchase the localized version of Sakura Wars V on the day when it was released. (I get the impression that only a handful of other fans bought it.) Even though I found the experience to be somewhat of a letdown, I'm hoping that Iwakura Productions will finish its fan translation of the first Sakura Wars game in the near future.

Yeaaah... I figured it out a whopping three seconds after posting, and swiftly fixed it afterwards :amane:

My brain likes to short out with the most obvious things sometimes

Aside from Fortissimo, I guess Hoshi Ori Yume Mirai is one that I'm itching to read

Tales of Vesperia PS3 Extended cut: Now despite Vesperia being my least favorite of the tales of franchise it was still a very good game. Hell I bought a PS3 originally to play any new Tales of rpgs that released in the future. Imagine my horror and shock when Tales of Vesperia appeared not on a Sony console but on XBOX360. But wait there was still hope; perhaps the game would still release on PS3 later. Soon enough Tales of Vesperia PS3 extended edition is announced and I'm thinking it's but a matter of time before it comes to the U.S....except it wasn't. It seems Microsoft had brokered a deal in the western market to make it exclusive to the 360 and so it never released on PS3 despite the game being made in Japan. Real annoying. I would love to see a PC or even PS4 version of Tales of Vesperia uncut edition release in the future (the likelihood of that ever happening is very low though as they would have to dub the new dialogue...which is extremely unlikely. Hell I'd take it unvoiced if need be. So yeah that sucked. I will remain hopeful it will come to PC one day though...

Golden Time Vivid Memories, Date A Live: Arusu Install, Yahari Game demo Ore no Seishun Love Kome wa machigatteiru, Nisekoi Yomeiri !?, To Love Ru Trouble Darkness: True Princess, The Asterisk War: The Academy City on the Water Houaa Kenran, Mahouka Koukou No Rettousei: Out of Order

I know that most of these probably won't be good but I would still like to play them.

NHow that the kiseki are being released and fantranslated, my most wanted localizations are

1) Emerald Dragon for the PC-Engine Supercdrom2

2) The legend of Xanadu I and II for the PC-Engine Supercdrom2

3) Tengai Makyou III Namida for the PS2

4) The Legend of Heroes III, IV and V for Windows

Whitout a doubt.

Net High seems fun and stylish as hell. It is a Vita exclusive AFAIK, but I hear that it did get a trophy list from Xseed. Xseed, pls pls pls.

Funny how there are just a few publishers that are single handily keeping the Vita from just being as ded as my Sakura Taisen hopes and dreams
