What methods do you use to watch anime?

Surprised how many people actually download their anime. I've always just watched a version hosted online for fear of the viruses torrents tend to bring with them. In fact VNs are one of the few examples of things I've used torrents for.

That's mostly a problem with software rather than videos, and even then mostly on unmoderated public torrent sites like TPB, and even then mostly if you either download on day one of release or don't check comments before downloading.

In other words, go to sites that have proven to be trustworthy and/or read the comments section before downloading, and you'll be fine.  Then run regular virus scans just in case you aren't.

I don't stream because I will often rewatch a show, and I'd rather use storage than double up on bandwidth use for the same show.  Granted, anything I like well enough to do repeat viewings of ends up on my "buy when it comes out on Blu-Ray" list.

Which reminds me.  I need to replace my broken PS3 so I can start watching Blu-Rays again.  Also so I can play games on it.

I also use torrents, setting up RSS feeds makes it easy to have my anime in the right place and ready to watch anytime.

This. Setting up the RSS downloader is really nice. You can grab the anime as soon as it's uploaded, and have it ready to watch by the time you realize it's there. It's especially nice when you're following multiple series per season (it beats having to visit nyaa all the time).

Also, for anyone that grabs batch torrent on either nyaa or BBT, you can also set a priority for each episode and make it to where you don't have to wait for the whole thing to finish before you can start watching. I generally prefer BBT for completed series since they typically have more seeders than nyaa.

I also stream on CR if I really want to stream something right when it's simulcasted (I did that for series like Kokoro Connect a while back). Otherwise, I just keep my subscription running without really taking advantage of it (just for the sake of supporting them). Sometimes, but very rarely, I'll stream CR on my phone or PS3 if I'm not at my computer (I don't have a laptop).

Another VLC user? Sheesh. The only real reason I can see having VLC is to test compatibility with a video file. If you follow this guide, however, you shouldn't have to worry about compatibility issues at all (I've had problems with CCCP, but using individual codecs should work very nicely). I'd strongly recommend upgrading your player if you want to get the most you can from your anime.

The reason I use it is because I don't need to read a 5-page guide on how to get it to work.

It's not that long. :o Should only take 5-10 minutes to get everything set up (Niyawa's guide is really simplistic compared to other playback guides). It's worth a small time investment to get rid of that awful player. It also plays mp3 and flac files really nicely if you decide to use it for music (especially if you decide to install reclock).

I watch them online on

http://kissanime.com/

Unless it's not there (only found Mahoromatic) or comes in shitty quality (not that often either, Guilty Crown and Nichijou for instance) I download them on bakabt or nyaa.se like everyone else. Having a slow internet (loads up to 720p in time on youtube and 1080p on that website, I wonder if youtube uses shitty codecs or something?) and 500 GB hard disk is kind of a disadvantage :(

Guess I'll try it then, not like I've got anything better to do with my time. :P

I'm just generally of the opinion that if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Whatever VLC may have done to deserve your ire (ran over your dog? :P), it's always worked for me.

That's one way to look at things, lol. Personally, I like to think that if it can be improved, improve it! Doesn't necessarily need a fix (at least not for me).

It's not just VLC either, CCCP is just as annoying to me! I use to get really bad headaches over video compatibility. Either the sound won't work, I can't switch audio tracks, the subtitles won't load properly (like typesetting and whatnot), and sometimes the video tears excessively. It was especially prevalent for older anime since fansubbers couldn't encode for shit back then. :P Ever since I started using this, it's been nothing but smooth sailing in that area. The video quality was also a nice perk. Because I have a really nice 1080p monitor, I always try to milk out as much as I can from my video settings.

DawnWolf, how do you get your folders to display like that? I didn't ever think you could do that. o.o And yeah, BakaBT and Nyaa are really nice to download from. Also, be careful with seeding on BBT. I mean, you should always seed your torrents no matter what, but it can be really easy to lose ratio on BBT since they only have batch files (and way too many people seeding).

VLC uses a different thingy (libass) to render subtitles than the usual, and generally fansub groups do their subbing assuming the normal thing (vsfilter/xy-vsfilter) is being used. This can result in compatibility issues. There might be video stuff as well, idk.

These days, KCP works pretty well; tried multiple of those guides and they are a huge pain. KCP more or less does the same thing as the usual MPC-HC guides, potentially excepting a few micro-optimizations (and you can change those later if you want.) Now, there was a time where it was apparently very outdated componentwise. This is no longer the case. Recommended~

Note the LAV filter / compatibility problems section, as it mentions VNs. I'm not sure if you even need to use the LAV filters for anything, though.

You don't really need to worry about ratios on bakabt if you aren't using an account there, and while they disable the search function for unregistered users, googling the name + bakabt practically always works.

That video has nothing but truth to it!

Yeah, KCP has gotten a lot better. Only reason I didn't bring it up is because I almost forgot about it, lol. Back when I first started using codecs, I held off on using KCP because it was never being updated. But because it does use the same codecs that the guide suggests, it might actually be a good alternative.

The codec pack causes problems for VNs? I might have to recommend against it if that's the case. The nightly build in the guide uses built-in LAV filters for video decoding, so there's no need to install that filter to your computer. And LAV filters are actually necessary to view fansub files nowadays. MPC-HC cannot decode 10-bit natively, so you will need that filter to watch fansub releases since they almost always use 10-bit.

Yeah, I suppose that's true. I actually did have to use that at first to keep my ratio from being too low (you can download the torrent while logged off, then log in, re-download the .tor file, and it'd be like a freeleech), but I prefer BBT's search feature over a search engine. Not only that, but you can't download porn from that site without an account. :P That and it's nice to be able to track releases through RSS when you get power user status.

For Windows 7 (not sure on the rest): Right click the folder -> Properties -> Customize (last tab on right) -> Change icon -> Select picture.

It doesn't put in a folder shape though, so you'll have to make the pictures yourself if you want them like mine, or just google "(anime's name) icons".

The files have to be ico files (converticon.com to make pics into icons) 512 x 512 or under to work. Just looking up anime icon packs on deviant art will probably take care of all your needs. You should keep all your icons in one folder btw, cause if they're moved or deleted the picture reverts to normal.

As for BakaBT, I have an account but I just stick to anime that I can freeleech, and when I can't I just copy the url, log out, paste the url and then download the torrent. Only way I know of the keep a decent ratio and still download a ton of stuff.

Oh, I see. I thought the videos themselves had some kind of code that would allow them to show folder icons by themselves. I'm too lazy to apply those things manually, so I guess I'll just keep it at that. :P

Well, that's another way to do it. Now that I think about it, you can even use a different browser to download from BBT in order to skip the login/logout deal. Since most websites use cookies to keep you logged in (BBT is included), you can just copy the url from a browser you're logged in on and paste it in a browser that you're not logged in on.

just curious for the people that download anime have any of you gotten letters from your isp or anything like that? i would like to download but getting those sketches me out a bit.

If you use Comcast, Time Warner, or ATT, you might. But they usually won't do anything serious on the first offense. I use Brighthouse (Florida only) and they have not gotten on my case about torrenting at all. And even then, those 3 I mentioned probably won't care if the material you're downloading does not have origins in this country. I'd also suggest leaving Pirate Bay alone. But yeah, I've been torrenting for years and my ISP has not gotten on my case at all. I don't even use a proxy or VPN.

But I actually would like more confirmation on Comcast. The area I'm moving to has Comcast instead of Brighthouse and I'm a bit worried on what to do with torrenting. Anyone have any suggestions? I've heard about Comcast throttling torrents too. I hope there are good alternatives where I'm moving to. I'll likely invest in a VPN if I can't find one.
