kingdomcome reacted to Fred the Barber in My SakuraCon panel, "Getting Started with Visual Novels"
It went really well! I was going to post last night, but, well... Anyway, I was up so late that despite not getting anywhere near enough sleep, I just now got settled in front of a computer again briefly (before, of course, heading back to the con shortly).
My biggest fear was that nobody would show up, but the opposite happened: the crowd was so big that people had to be turned away at the door! So that's a little sad, but on the other hand, I had a big, interested group of people. Also, apparently they had a projector malfunction in that room and no replacement, so my slides were up on a depressingly tiny 32" TV screen. Thankfully the room wasn't that big, so people were able to read the large text of my slides (which I'm quite certain of because the whole room was laughing at both the second Steam slide and the Steins;Gate slide well before I said anything). But I think the game screenshots were probably illegible, so things like my Grisaia Somalia reference and my closing joke didn't play as well as they should have.
The presentation itself went off really well - by my own lights, I did better on each topic than I did in any of my rehearsals. I must've talked at light speed, though, since I was apparently done in ~30 minutes... but whatever, people didn't seem to mind. I did the eye contact thing; it clearly worked. The Q&A section went for about 10 minutes, and revealed a pretty diverse crowd:
I had a passionate otome fan who had played pretty much everything she could get her hands on and was looking for new stuff. She was mostly interested in the importing + fan TL side of things, and we had a little chat after the panel was over. I mentioned that I'd been planning to pick up Hakuoki soon, and her eyes lit up. I had another female who had a friend that was trying to get her into VNs, but only knew about JList, and she was loth to spend $80 and wait a month to play something. So, she was very happy to hear about all the more affordable options I'd laid out. I had a /r/visualnovels redditor who helped me out with a couple additional pointers about the reddit VN community, and who grilled me about my basis for believing the Grisaia translation to be better-written than the original Japanese (my answer: I can understand a lot of the original dialog, and it's clearly not as colorful as koestl's translation) I had the three people who, for the last few years, had been hosting a kind of "what are visual novels" panel at SakuraCon. I actually ran into them early at the Sekai Project line and asked why they weren't running the panel this year, and the main guy said "I forgot about the deadline. But it looks like somebody else is doing a panel, so I guess it worked out ok". That of course elicited a chuckle and a "That's me". They were quite helpful, especially in fielding some audience questions - clearly a lot more experienced than I am. I was chatting briefly before the panel with the SakuraCon volunteer who was running ops for my panel; when I mentioned I was running the only visual novel fan panel at SakuraCon, it turned out that he had no idea visual novels existed, and assumed that I was using some weird name for graphic novels. He got into it enough that he asked a question during the Q&A session too All told, the room was at capacity with 25 attendees. I had two people leave near the end (maybe they had somewhere to be at 11; still hurts a bit), but the rest of the crowd seemed really into it, sticking around all the way through the end of the Q&A, and I got a couple big rounds of applause.
I walked out in company with the friend I'd brought along (who had never played more than a little bit of F/SN before deciding it wasn't for him, but who I apparently completely sold on picking up Grisaia; I really thought Comyu would be more his speed since he loves mecha...), as well as the past-year panelists and a few other random people, all of whom were chatting about ancient VN lore I knew nothing about. It was a great vibe, and I'm really happy that, even if those people didn't get anything from my presentation directly, I provided a venue for them to meet up and chat.
So, yeah, it was an absolute blast, and I definitely achieved my goal of bringing knowledge to a few more people and helping the community grow a little bit.

    Dracu-Riot! Completion Project
    Project Info:
As i said in a previous post, if the Dracu-Riot scripts were released, I will translate Miu's route, and that's exactly what I'm announcing in this thread.
But I'm not alone in this crusade, I've partnered with the wonderful people at The Oxford Comma is Superior Subs so we can deliver the best possible final product and lay the Dracu-Riot memes to rest. We also got several people from the Fuwanovel community to help speed up things even more.
How is the project going to go down, you ask. Well you can read this post if you want detailed info, but the tl;dr version is that we are aiming to release multiple patches.
The first patch aims to translate the remainder of Miu's route as well as any remaining untranslated content (images, menus, etc.) with complete editing to polish the current patch.
We are going to try and release this in about 2 months, if everything goes according to plan.
The second patch is meant to be more heavily translation checked as that's when Fiddle has enough free time to go over the whole game.
There is no ETA for this second patch.
This doesn't mean the first patch will be terrible, we will of course strive for a good product, but we would still like to inform you of our schedule. If we waited for Fiddle to be completely free, it would take much more time to release Miu's route, and so we've decided to do it this way.
I hope you look forward to future updates.
    FAQ:
Why not just make a Miu partial patch, why do you want to go over the whole game?
There are actually 3 main reasons for this:
The first and biggest one is that Insem's patch only works with the physical version of Dracu-Riot! which is very hard to get in the West and we want to make a new patch that works on both the physical and digital versions of the game, this way people can purchase the digital version and patch it, thus supporting Yuzusoft. The second one is that we want to americanize the writing style as well as make sure everything is edited properly, because Insem didn't have time to finish the whole thing. The last one is translation checking. Although we don't doubt Insem's abilities, we really want to try and make sure the translation is accurate. We also want to include translation notes in the game. Only 2 months? That seems way too fast.
2 months is indeed fast, if we were translating the entire game, but we're actually only translating about 4,000 lines and we're splitting those lines between two main translators, this will hopefully make that 2 month deadline possible.
Please do note we will not jeopardize translation quality for the sake of reaching the deadline. If we can not make it in time, we will delay the release until we're satisfied with the end result.
    Will the translation have memes?
Yes, but only the dankest ones.
Why aren't The Oxford Comma people making the announcement here?
So I can get those sweet, sweet internet points.
    I want to help!

    Hey all,
I wish I had some additional news and information to share with you all, but right now we're working hard to see that the game is released just as soon as possible. I know we're all anticipating the release and maybe even a little excited to dive right into the game the second it drops, but please just hang in there with us a weeee bit longer.
Thanks for the patience and understanding, it really is appreciated.

Will finish up chapter 2 once I´m home, (in school at the moment,) and then I´ll upload it. It will most likely be up in 6-7 hours after this post.
Will be making a small list of questions later about the structure of it, so if you have any suggestions for changes I can make in future chapters, start thinking of them now and I´ll make a thread or a blog post with a poll where you can vote after chapter 2 is up.
(Think, how many deaths do you want each week? Should the fights be longer or shorter? Should I focus more on the identity of each character, or should I make it more fast paced with more deaths each chapter? etc etc.)

I had a little less time to write chapter 2 compared to chapter 1, so there might be some slight inconsistencies in the writing, but I don´t think it should be very noticable. I hope it isn´t at least

I know it's bait, but seriously thinking about an automod, never in the history of fuwanovel has something been reported 10 times
The most we got on the same post was like, 4, and that's in a peculiar day where everyone who could take mod action went to sleep and a spambot appeared.
Of course, people would (hopefully) report more stuff under such a system, so I guess that'd be ok.
This creates a dangerous system where a few people can join together and fuck over other members with no reason, though. It's kinda tough.

@Funyarinpa Thanks for the info. I think it's obviously very vital information and I think DavidB should tell us here, although he might too busy to announce it here here.
@kingdomcome I think I'll quote the latest announcement from Root Double kickstarter below. It was at March 10.
I think that's all the info we could got about Regista activity here (I didn't checked NeoGAF), and maybe Regista was quite busy (I didn't know about technical term like cloud save and overlay for gaming programming). And in the same announcement Sekai said that they still hardworking to bring translated Root Double release here.

I checked with FuwAccounting, and it appears that I have, indeed, made the prerequisite amount of drivel posts to qualify for the 500 mark. As such, tradition dictates that this thread be borne into the world. Being an old man (rivaling @Rookefor the title of Geezer) I clearly love tradition.
First off, if I don't mention you specifically, don't take it personally. I don't dislike anyone here and your non-mention is likely due to my receding memory. Or you just didn't make enough of an impression. It's almost the same. (Those are totally not the same.)
Secondly, this thread is here for you to roast me, ask me questions, tease me, taunt me, etc.
Anyhow... checking out the boards here has become something I look forward to daily, as you get older it gets even harder finding people in the surrounding zip codes who share your interests. The internet is great because it allows me access to you guys and gals. For that, I thank you for your continued existence.
@CeruleanGamer- thanks for letting me copy/modify your posts when I was feeling unoriginal... or at the very least not killing me over the interwebs for it.
@Flutterz- I believe you were the only one to actually email me when I offered way back in the day. And you continue to listen to me while about FGO gacha. I still say you should shave your head and grow a goatee.
@OriginalRen- I enjoyed the couple times you live-fed the new posters and stuff you ordered. Still waiting on the poster I bought from you. Not mad.
@Kaguya- Hey, you put up with me being an idiot, so you should at least get mentioned.
@Jade,@Rose, @Maxel, @Mugi- The FGO thread crew that deal with me the most besides Flutterz.
@12kami- who would keep my silliness alive.
There's a lot more... I'll make a part two later. Or inquire inside.
Anyways, thanks for helping me get through the day.

So I finished G-senjou no Maou after a pretty long time reading it. (No real spoilers here, but just in case I'll put it in a spoiler tag:)

Anyways, now that I'm done with this I will take a small break from long titles and wait for Tokyo Babel to come out.
Currently reading Lucy - The eternity she wished for. Haven't gotten far, but I am really enjoying it.
