'Lout' isn't slang. If you look it up in the Merriam Webster (the dictionary Yanks like to use) you'll see they regard it as a normal noun. Words they regard as slang are marked as such. The usage of 'lout' doesn't seem to have decreased much over time either. If you consider it to be slang, you'd have to consider words like 'boor' to be slang also.
Lot also isn't slang, it's quite 'proper' (at least as much as 'folk' is.) I also prefer 'you lot' to 'you guys' (which has gender problems these days) or 'you folks' which just sounds like you're trying to hard. Actually you don't hear 'folk' as much outside of America, so if you're trying to find more geographically neutral language then I'd stay away from 'folk'.
I should also point out that I live in Australia and both 'lout' and 'lot' are common. Same in NZ.

Although I prefer all 3 over the dreadful 'youse' ... thank you muchly whoever did that. I'm betting it was those descended from the Latin languages >:c
At the end of the day, all of these suggestions (lot, guys, people, folks, ... youse) are just ways to pluralise 'you'. There are tons of them and I don't regard one as better or more proper than the others (even though I regard one as worse than the rest.) Not slang, just a worldwide language phenomenon where people try to correct what they see as a deficiency in the word 'you' (no second-person plural.)

Sorry, dude, but that's just flat out wrong.  Lout dates to the sixteenth century, and lot has meant "group, collection" since the eighteenth century.

Time for a very special progress update!  Read on for the 4-1:
I've seen a lot of controversy in the past and debate over whether projects should use past tense or present tense.  To be honest, neither one is an ideal solution.  There are pros and cons of both approaches.  But whoever said this was an either-or?  There are other tenses.  I have found the perfect solution - the future perfect - and am busy reworking the existing translation to the new standard.  This will necessitate a bit of additional delay (pushing us out to 2030 or so), but it will be worth it.  After all, moving the game into the future just makes it more perfect.
And doesn't everyone want a perfect translation?  I will have been proud to oblige!

Sumaga has basically been in some form of editing since 2010, so considering the scale of time we're working with here I'm not sure you should read into it in that way and make assumptions. It's really anyone's guess as to whether Sumaga's editing is finished or not, and even if it is finished, what that means for its actual release.

Nandemonai reacted to Zakamutt in Maki Fes! [Cumplete patch released]
Today is the birthday of @HMN... but less importantly, it is also the birthday of Love Live's Nishikino Maki. It is thus with great pleasure I announce that we, Bueeh?! Translations, Though, have successfully completed a translation patch for Maki Fes!, where you can fuck her in at least 8 different ways! Maki is fully voiced; the unnamed male main character is not, so you can totally pretend he's Dovac if that's what you get off to (look, don't judge me). I believe like two of the scenes are animated too, but one is a blowjob scene and blowjobs are boring, so idk seems kinda pointless if you ask me ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Jokes aside I spent surprising amounts of time translating 1/10 of this thing, and some other people spent even more doing, well, significantly more work. I don't understand, I just stand in awe at their dedication and prowess.
You can find the patch, as well as patching instructions (you have to scroll b/c asonn is a terrible web designer), at our website. We hope you enjoy your time with Maki...

Nandemonai reacted to ChaosRaven in Clannad? Overrated or Worthy of it's honours?
I think when judging Clannad, it has to be considered how old this title really is. It was released in 2004, so it's about 13 years old now. I've read it just a few years ago when it was already about 10 years old and would have rated it a solid 7/10 at that time. But to be fair, if I would have read it ten years ago, it would have probably impressed me a lot more. Furthermore, Clannad is a school life nakige/moege which is nowadays amongst the most common VN's released in Japan, with most likely several dozen releases per year of varying quality. That means it has lots of competition by now.
So I think there's no shame for a 13 year old title, that significantly defined the whole genre, to be just 'solid average' anymore today.

Nandemonai got a reaction from Dreamysyu in How do visual novels handle multiple heroines in the common route?
How to put this ... You are looking at visual novels the wrong way.  It's like watching a single movie - say a James Bond movie - and trying to extrapolate to what movies as a whole are like.
You can find VNs telling lots of different kinds of stories.  Even just among romance VNs.  There are all kinds of romance games.  There are games that are little more than excuses to get into the girls' pants, in which the excuse plot is romance-related.  There are games about doomed romance.  There's even (if I'm informed correctly) a horror-romance VN called Gore Screaming Show that has quite a stellar reputation (though I haven't played it myself).
To answer your specific question, it depends on the game.  Sometimes, all the girls almost entirely disappear from the story once you land on a girl's route.  Sometimes, all the girls are in love with you from day one.  Sometimes, they all hate you, and the story is about slowly winning them over.  Sometimes, just the girl whose route you're on falls for you.  Sometimes, more than one falls for you and it's played for comedy; sometimes, for drama.  I know of one game (OzMafia, an otome game) that actually takes it to the logical extreme: for some of the characters, when you enter character A's route, character B gets jealous, and you can actually switch from A to B.  Note that you could also continue on A's route, or by playing differently, take B's normal route.  And then there's the infamous School Days, which simply ... lets you choose.  There are two main heroines, they both love you, you can stay faithful, or not; if you don't, very bad things happen when they find out, involving body counts!
Now, translated, that's another matter.  But there's still a lot of stuff available.

I did a little analysis on changing trends in Visual Novels using the voting data on vndb if anyone is interested. I put up the first part of the series here:

This is part of a whole series of posts, with my next post looking at protags, and what kinds of traits different types of protags are associating with according to an analysis of the tag distribution on vndb.

Nandemonai reacted to Black Sands Entertainment in I failed making my VN so I made a comic instead...which went viral AMA
Hey guys. Remember me? Well I killed Black Sands about 5 months ago due to production costs being too high but I shifted my efforts to a much more cost efficient comic series in the same universe.
I wanted to share with you my personal story because I feel it is a very interesting perspective from an EVN developer.

    The PAST
I worked on Black Sands, Legends of Kemet for a little over a year.. I had updated my project page here close to 50 times and I had this very unusual story. In 2015 I launched my first kickstarter and failed miserably. Most people when they fail, they blame others for not reading their story and getting immersed.
I didn't believe this at all.
I felt I failed because my art was subpar and thus people never got the chance to read my story. I then recruited an amazing artist by the name of hydriss to create my VN. We worked for a year to get it ready for a kickstarter relaunch and overhauled the story to be more engaging.
We had success finding major investors but they never had time for our production so after waiting months for a cash injection, we cut ties. We were then 10k in the hole.
I killed production of Black Sands then and there and decided to do a much easier comic book series that was targeted at kids and their parents who were fans of DBZ and what not.
I named it Kids 2 Kings. Not because it was a good name, but because it was a memorable name. It's really hard to forget.

We created our first issue and released it on the madefire app and had great reviews. We then launched our kickstarter, which is in its last days now.
The funny thing is we recently made a trailer for kids 2 kings and it went viral and facebook and twitter.
Now sitting at 190 retweets and 235k views on facebook, Kids 2 Kings, is becoming my dream come true.
Now it is extremely unusual for people to completely turn around and do something else but it is a very UNIQUE experience that you might want to learn more about so I AM OPEN FOR ANY AND ALL QUESTIONS.
BTW, thanks Fuwa for keeping me motivated all these years when i was developing black sands. I couldn't have gotten to this point without you guys.

Before that people hated ME2 for taking out all RPGness from ME1 (before replacing some in ME3) to make it a generic shooter ... with mediocre shooter mechanics. Before that people hated ME1 because it meant Bioware was heading down the shooter path. Before that they hated Jade Empire for being just an action game. Before that they hated KOTOR because it meant Bioware was developing games for "console casuals." Before that people hated NWN for "false advertising" because it was meant as a multiplayer game, but the "sample single player scenario" was advertised as a full on single person game.
The Bioware hate is old-hat. It's not as recent as people portray it to be, and the ME3 ending drama was blown out of all proportion. The only uncontroversial games Bioware ever released was the Baldur's Gate series. What's really hurting Bioware is that for the first time in a very long while, they've actually got some competition 0.0
    CD Projekt = new Bioware?
The rumour going round is that Casey Hudson was responsible for the ME3 ending
