So, I've been awake the past 36 hours.  After saving the day, I need a rest.  I will most likely see you all tomorrow.

Hopefully Tay will come online to confirm the victory soon enough.  I feel like we have a near-guaranteed victory but there's always the possibility someone or another will try and pull something on the senator's side, depending on how severe the vagueness of the rules caused us to head into other directions.

But, I need to rest.  Good day!

It's over 5,000 words but we still need to edit it into something more comprehensible, getting things in chronological order, filling in the gaps where scenes are absent, etc.

There are maybe three scenes that I definitely need to get in to tie the plot together, including the start and end scenes.  I also need to finish Phersu's fight scene, which seems to have slowed down tremendously since my original writing phase.

It's certainly possible to get this finished, but I don't want people assuming we're in the clear.  Writing is never that simple, else we would all be billionares with a fucking mansion as soon as we learned what a word document is.

I'm...going to be frank, I actually liked the old project name better.  Feels like an extra syllable for not a good enough reason, and it's slightly more difficult to pronounce.  At least change the second word to something latin-ish as well for consistencies sake.

That said, I still wish you guys luck on the project.  I'll be looking forward to how it turns out.

Hm...fair enough.  I suppose if it starts taking a little too long I'll just try and make something from the small fragments that I know so far.  It might not be 100% accurate, but it should be close enough to claim victory for the crisis, at least.

-AT THE END OF A SUMMER'S KNIGHT-

Many salutations, esteemed forum-goer!  Thank you for your visit.  I can assure you that we will be having a splendid time here.

Seeing as how the OELVN community has just been hit with a severe blow, both with the cancellation of Dysfunctional Systems and the announcement of a sequel to Sakura Spirit, which no doubt must be causing severe pain to our fellows, I have taken it upon myself to take up the developer's banner once more, and bring victory to Fuwa-kind!

At the End of a Summer's Knight, is a short 4-6 hour Visual Novel, mostly kinetic with the exception of a single choice halfway through the final act.  The story takes place in Europe, in an undecided/fictional country, during what may or may not be the period of the French Revolution or something similar.  Somewhere around the enlightenment period.  Anyway, political turmoil, fancy suits, badass assassins, lots of swords and lots and LOTS of fighting.  Oh, and if we're ever short on music, I think most of the music from that period has entered open-source by now, so we might just be able to use that, which would be ab-sol-utely splendid!

Art is probably going to be our weak point, so I'm assuming this will likely be presented in NVL mode, to draw more attention to the writing as opposed to the art.  Engine will most likely be Ren'py.

For now, there are about seven to eight characters who would need some sprites, though this is subject to change.  (I certainly don't plan to add any more, at the very least.)  I don't believe many individual sprites across those will be necessary though, as we're trying to keep this minimum to low budget, if money is involved at all.  Best-case scenario, either we're able to release for free or we can put the funds towards a 'next project' if possible.

    --CHARACTERS

--Protagonist's daughter (7-9 years of age.)

--Rebellion Leader (Older than Protagonist by about 5 years.  Charismatic, not afraid of killing, strong and dies about halfway through.)

--Fellow Rebel (Otherwise known as 'Genderbent Battler'.)

    Bad guys

--King (Dies in the opening sequence.  Might not even need a sprite, just a CG or two if we can manage it right.)

--Prince (Damn good with a sword.  Personality would usually be that of a rival character if we're following standard shonen fare.  A year or two younger than the protagonist.)

--Bumbling other prince (Prince's fancypants cousin from god-knows-where.  Installed as a figurehead by the prince after the king's death.  Arrogant and not very bright.)

--Genderbent Beatrice (What, you can't have Battler if you don't have Beatrice, can you?  Originally a rebel member, stayed behind during the opening sequence and got captured.  Then he goes half-insane as time goes on, eventually turning 'full-on evil' for the sake of bloodlust.)

--Guard Captain (Not easily aggravated, and actually quite calm.  Uses a bow in a world where guns are just starting to become more commonplace.)

Note:  Genderbent Battler/Beatrice are only referred that way for humor's sake in addition to that being their origin, and will probably be quite different as things develop.  Please don't consider those the most important parts of their character.  Remember, Battler is female and Beatrice is the male.

After that, there would be the outline.  Consider this a less-detailed flowchart.  It should cover all of the major events in a summarized fashion.  Names will be given for the characters, but these are not thought through and are more of a placeholder/inside jokes.

     >>> marks indicate that it has moved to the next scene.  This will only cover the very basics, so don't expect it to be in-detail.

NATURALLY, THESE WILL HAVE SPOILERS IN THEM.  JUST LETTING YOU KNOW.

(The summary is taking a bit long to write, so I'll finish it later.  Act III is the last one.)

    --WORKLOAD

As for the writing itself, if I'm the only one like I expect, I'll likely write them in traditional novel format in a Word Document, then move them over to the Ren'py engine on a scene-by-scene basis, regardless of whether or not the art/sounds are finished by then.  They will be added in as they are completed.  Other writers are welcome to come if they are interested, however I will most likely require a sample of former work.  Artists and sound people are in the highest priority, followed by managers and programmers, and then additional writers.  They all have a chance, but the lower you are the higher-quality work it might take to get accepted.  Larger teams take much more work to manage.

Now that that's done, I have one last thing to say.  While the possibility of this being sold exists, do not come into this expecting to get paid.  Should this be of high quality enough I will do what I can to make sure those with the effort and willpower get what lies at the end of the tunnel, but I will make damn sure that you put out the effort if you want this to happen.  Half-assed work, and that goes for any of you, won't be worth a penny in the commercial market.  I'm sure we all want this to go as far as it can, and I will make it happen with all of my strength.  But do not think you can make something so much as a physical reward without putting out every last fiber of your being into this.

And with that, I suppose that's everything.  Should we get some examples of art, writing, etc created, we shall put it up.  Maybe a demo or two as well if we're able to.  But until then, I ask of your patience.

I estimate a release around August 2015 if everything goes smoothly.  Maybe later.

Good luck, everyone.  If you're interested, please PM me or make a post below.

Zodai got a reaction from hamoun76 in Are you that type of VN player?
I felt that way after completing some of Rewrite (Can't remember which route it was exactly - Kotori was first but I took an extended break after that) but eventually I powered on through and finished it.  There's nothing inherently wrong with it, it just means the writers are doing their job.  But the feeling only lasts a week or two at most, and if it left that strong of an impression you're likely to finish the game eventually.

I'm more likely to stop playing after a single route because the game managed to lose it's source of power, or if the path to the next route felt too convoluted (Ex.  Comyu, where it would auto-skip past the new scenes and severely hampered my enjoyment.)

It's a bit vague, but I suppose I am that type, at least in exceptionally good VNs.

Persona series for sure.  3 and 4 are on the PSN, if you don't mind missing out on the extra content from the PSP/Vita ports.

Persona Q comes out in a few days for the 3DS, but you'd be better off playing that one after you beat 3 and 4.

3 and 4 are only 10$ each from what I remember, and Q is probably a full release.

Zodai got a reaction from arakura in Formation of a VN team to make visual novels
Don't feel like joining at the current time, but here are some resources and advice from someone's who's gone down this path before.

Firstly, from a pure writer's perspective, here's some resources for understanding the basics.

    http://davidfarland.net/writing_tips/

Writing in and of itself isn't something that can be underestimated, and regardless of someone's particular philosophy, letting the writing get the short end of the stick, in any of its forms, won't bode well for the final product, and should be the highest priority regardless of previous experience.  This isn't something that can be slacked on.

Just as important, is the ability to work as a team and keep communication in check.  No matter your talent as a writer, a VN is not a solitary work, and if your team is arguing or doesn't know what to do, then people aren't working as efficiently, and chances are the team will fall apart.  Leadership skills are ABSOLUTELY VITAL for a project like this, and it's both one of the less obvious aspects of making a VN, and the place where people in the field are usually lacking, as the niche audience around it makes meeting our fellow folk outside the internet a near impossibility.  If you absolutely can't get this done, you're probably better off with a traditional novel for a few years.

Personal experience tells me those are the two most likely stumbling blocks, but there's a lot of smaller things to keep note of as well.  Feel free to take inspiration from wherever you can, but make sure to put something original on top of it or mix two ideas together to keep it fresh.  Be open to suggestions, both within and outside the development team, but you have no reason to feel obligated to implement something if it takes away from the priority goals.

If you feel like you want some more advice, or if you feel like inviting me to the team personally, feel free to shoot me a PM - it's not entirely likely I'll say yes, but I could use the experience.  Just be aware that my team skills are sub-par at best.  They're something I need to improve on.

I wish you luck, and hope to be seeing a product in the coming months.

This looks interesting.  Can't believe I didn't notice it before.

    Good luck to all involved!

Also, it seems like you're in need of a Co-editor.  I'll ask for some more information first, but I might be interested in the position.  Expect a PM to Helvetica in the coming hours.

Hear thy prayer, heed thine call...

At the burial ground of what is lost, cleanse that which cannot be undone.

Reap the spirits that lie in wait, wailing in fear, hands stained in blood.

There is no mercy, there is no regret.

Only judgement at the hands of Death.

So praise thy name upon their corpse.

Let justice be brought, and their lives not for naught.

On bloodstained soil, his steps calm in stride.

They run in panic, and try to hide.

With shivering limbs and beads of sweat,

They quiver in silence, and fear their breath.

For they know they sit at the gates of Death.

So hear thy prayer, and heed thine call,

And tremble in fear in these hallowed halls.

--Guilty Seeker, the great Grim Reaper.

Planning to use it in a story of mine.  Needs some polishing, but I think it turned out alright.
