  1. I think personally this is a bad move. I think a substantial part of the user base is here for the free, easy access to torrents ---> no free, easy, access to torrents, no more of those users. It would be better if we could at least host the torrents on another site; and I think the all the notifications about other sites hosting malware masquerading as fuwanovel translations is a pretty good indication of what could happen if all the torrents shut down. They'll still be distributed, but in a much less safe, and more dangerous way. The users of the forums and twitter and facebook will still stick around, because they're already hooked on vns. It's preaching to the choir. (Not that that's a bad thing; I'm in the choir too). To hook new users in, there needs to be easy access to free, good, vns. Some people are lazy and some people are horrendously bad with computers; and some people don't want to take the risk of malware that torrenting on a website of questionable reputation brings. The stream of new users, as in new to vns, will probably stagnate. The site will survive, but more as a stronghold of vn users rather than a site for conversion. As to the fact that fewer users of the twitter and facebook use torrents than expected, its probably because the sample is skewed. Users of the facebook and twitter are probably more dedicated and downloaded what they wanted already; the new users, the more important ones, are the ones not surveyed and probably downloading the most. I feel fuwanovel originated as a reputable listings site, and that's the core of its services. Without accessibility, it sort of loses its power, or changes the site fundamentally, from a vn sharing site to a vn promoting site. Which are two very different things -- not necessarily bad things, but two very different ones with slightly overlapping demographics. I hope this site the best, but I'm probably not going to follow it very closely from now on. Thanks for the awesome experience!
  2. You probably did this already, but is the computer's system locale set to japanese? I spent half an hour gnashing my teeth over a vn until I realized that I forgot to change it.
  3. Most of the time the CGs are so out of context its a non-spoiler for me. It's like a trailer for a movie: it sets the tone and introduces the "actors".
  4. Corpse Party and Dangan Ronpa are very well built non-ero vns that can be found online. The only caveat is that they need a psp emulator to run. I can recommend both as high-quality vns.
  5. I feel like demos don't really work for me because I tend to binge on VNs. Especially if the plot is driving, it can be a nuisance for the story to suddenly be interrupted. Demos are still pretty useful just to see the writing quality in general, though. Quality can vary wildly from game to game.
  6. Visual Novels definitely increase reading comprehension in some way, shape, or form. VNGs do seem to focus on story more than the actual quality of the writing itself, which is no bad thing. VNGs seem to spread ideas just as well as a book, and since in a way, *you* are the protaganists, you get much more invested in the story, heightening the impact. VNGs are made to be immersive. VNGs help you connect the dots above all else. Since there's the illusion of user interaction, it's much easier to see x happening as a result of y in a story. You could also argue that VNGs are almost sort of a crutch for visualizing literature: the setting, appearances of the character, and the soundtrack are all decided for you. Oddly enough, the more I play vngs, the easier it is for me to visualize settings and characters in novels I read. Most VNGs are not well written as in prose, so it won't help you be literate as much as conventional literature. The best written VNGs are the ones that simply don't have anything that sounds awkward. Even if a VNG is written mediocre, the music, plot, and voice acting can make it successful.
  7. Sorry about jumping to conclusions with robotics; notes. Since it had a subbed anime, i felt that they must have ported an english version vng to vita -----> logic failure. The deal with the vita is that it's a great system (like the specs are insane if you look it up comparatively) but because of that, it's really expensive + they rip you off on the memory card. Unless you can read japanese, or have bundles of spare cash, probably don't buy it for VNs exclusively: although other games are pretty cool.
  8. I think Dangan Ronpa 2 and ROBOTIC; NOTES are both translated vns that are available on vita that are pretty good. That being said, vitas aren't cheap. ;_; And most of the translated vns on the vita as of now can also be gotten online/for pc.
  9. Usually, the transitions make or break an opening. A good opening needs to have pretty cool transitions, and should cut to the beat. The song should usually fit the overall tone of the VN. An opening also needs good context to initiate it, and usually needs to introduce most of the major characters. Honestly, I don't think the soundtrack matters so much as long as it's halfway decent, fits the mood and doesn't drag on for too long. Although soundtracks should usually have a strong beat to match the video. An opening is basically a movie trailer that says "this is why you should play this visual novel game". I remember most of 5pb's games had pretty good ops, imo.
  10. Yup, it was a false postive. Fuwanovel remains the safe haven for visual novel torrents.
  11. Whenever I download Stein's Gate 8 bit, Norton detects threat "Suspicious.Cloud.9.B", and removes the plugin layerexdraw.dll. I'd like to play this game since I'm a big fan of Stein's;Gate, but don't really want to risk bricking my laptop in the process (virus cloud 9 seems to be the worst of the worst). Does anyone know if this is a false positive, or is a virus piggybacking off the torrent? Thanks! : )
