  1. If you manage to make a new script.noa, place it in the VN and the text appear ingame, odds are that whoever gets that file will get the English lines. I have seen people work differently, but I think it's a very good start to extract, translate the first few lines and then put them back into the VN to make sure they appear as expected. If they do, then you can just translate and you know it will work. If you translate without the test, you risk having a full translation you can't figure out how to insert, or one where you learn that you have to modify every single line to match some required format or whatever. I don't know why people skip the test, but some do.
  2. My experience is that extraction tools aren't well written. They usually do their task, but they usually do not check if it makes sense what they are doing. Often they read the filename as a string from the packed file and then opens a file for writing using that string as a filename. In theory it's fine, but unless the filename is ascii, it assumes the file system to use the same encoding as the packed file. If the VN use cp932 (most of them do), then windows will have to do the same, which it will only do if it is set to Japanese locale. In other words extraction tools have a high risk of using garbage filenames unless windows is set to Japanese locale.

  8. I fully agree. I started brainstorming when I saw the first post, but realized I couldn't actually put my finger on a great UI. I have a few candidates for what not to do with UI, but not really how it should be done. I ended up just watching the thread and read the gems you guys will show up with.
  9. You can send me the file. I can't tell if I can do anything about it, but I can try. I can't say I blame you. Not all groups work equally well. A well working group is awesome and can do more than the combined effort of each member working individually. However when it just isn't working, then it sucks big time. The reason why I mention a group here is that I'm thinking of one person for each task, like one translator and one to deal with the script issue.
  10. That's likely, though it's also possible that it is just a compiled one or both compiled and encrypted. It could be the script and the strings could be stored in a different file. It's hard to tell since I still don't know which VN you are talking about. So whoever made the web novels made a VN. Seems like a reasonable entrance to VN translations. Not sure about not making a group just because it will only be one VN. However I was thinking of joining a group to watch experienced people at work, but that conflicts with the statement that it is just one VN and it has to be that VN.
  11. When the Musumaker translation project thread was started, the team consisted of two people. The other guy made an avatar from a screenshot of Musumaker, so I figured it would make sense to do the same. Failing to get a decent screenshot, I ended up fetching an image from DigitalCute's homepage (the company behind Musumaker). They have avatars of all the main heroines for people to use. They meant it to be used on twitter, but the resolution matched the fuwa requirements almost perfectly.
  12. Like your own post? Summary: I want to translate this VN (title not revealed). It has a file called script.noa, but I don't know what to do with it. Based on this I don't know what to say. Sometimes a VN takes a lot of knowledge to extract/insert the script and sometimes it's really easy. For a start, try using notepad++ to open the file to see if it is plain text. It likely isn't but it is a really easy first step to check. VNs are usually encoded in shift-jis, meaning you likely should change the encoding to that. I can't really say more based on what little you wrote. However I can say that I would welcome any new translators. Have you considered making a translation group or joining an existing one? Back then I started, I didn't know anything about organization or workflow and just tried to figure out stuff on my own. It worked, but joining a group with proper leadership and organization is a totally different world and the organized steps with editing and stuff does provide a much better result. If you just start on your own, you may end up re-inventing the wheel and odds are your new wheel wouldn't be round.
  13. I see no problem with cheating in singleplayer. Back in the days where I figured out hex editing, I invented a new game for myself: how many games can I gain 99 lives in? That actually turned out to be more fun than some of the games themselves and fun is the keyword here. Sometimes a game is good in general, but there is just one tiny bit in it, which you absolutely hate and why not use a patch to make you always win or skip that silly unbeatable minigame? I'm seriously considering cheating in Kamidori to get Devil Beads. You can only get one in each playthrough (unless you use certain rare magic items, in which case you can get up to 3-4). Even worse you need kill a high level boss in one blow while he has more than 50% hits left when you hit him, meaning there is a high risk you will not get any at all (which is the case for me). After something like 300 hours I still haven't managed to get even a single one and a minimum of 4 will be required to unlock all H scenes. I get the idea of hard to get resources, but this is just ridicules.
  14. It works on the platform(s) they were released for, which is precisely what they want. The fact that you want to port it to a new platform is besides the point. Also all the VNs you used as examples are 18+. Do you plan on reading those while commuting. People might not be happy about sitting on a train and the guy on the next seat is playing through a loli H scene.
  15. As much as I love this as a concept, I too wonder about distributing some VN reader, which is able to read closed sourced encrypted files. The comparison with ScummVM is good from a technical point of view, but the main difference is that you propose an engine for really recent titles while ScummVM works on mainly titles from the 90s. There is a major difference between "engine for games, which can't be played on modern computers" and "engine for games I think will not be able to work in the future, but does work right now".
  16. Just to add fuel to the fire, I will add that "" can be problematic. It's a quote in English and in the dawn of time (computer time, that is), programmers figured it would be a good sign to quote strings. This mean "This is a line" will leave out the "" in the string itself. Writing ""This is a line"" will end the string at the second " and cause an error. The way to write the line in a way the computer would understand would be "\"This is a line\"". However it could also be written "「This is a line」". However this only goes for " and this would also be accepted by the computer "“This is a line”". For easier comparison: "\"This is a line\"" "「This is a line」" "“This is a line”" Next problem is that most VNs use Japanese locale and as such use the shift-jis encoding (or rather Microsoft's codepage 932, which is virtually identical). This mean that not all characters are available. More specifically whatever is used should be available here Microsoft's cp932 page for 0x81 leading byte. Being aimed at Japanese text, they didn't include “”, but row 60, column 05 to 08 looks useful, or at least as close as one can get to what you asked for. Leaving technical reasons aside, I do actually like the 「」signs. I think they look decent. I just wish they were available with a character width, which didn't provide so much whitespace around them. However they seem to be made to match a default kanji width to make kanji line up vertical. There is nothing we can do about the width, other than making a custom font.

  18. I can't speak for other people, but I absolutely hate it. I think I gave it an honest chance, but it kept being weird and boring and in the end I simply couldn't stand reading anymore and it's one of the few where I'm simply unable to push myself to reach even one ending. Not liking any of the characters didn't help either.
  19. I thought a bit about this question of what would happen if the flow of electrons would stop. First we assume bio-generated electricity would continue to work or we would all be brain dead. First food will go bad because it becomes too hot. It will not be replenished because farming and food factories would stop as well. Infrastructure will collapse and ensure that the little food left in the countryside would stay there. Cities would starve to death. Post apocalyptic cannibalism and whatever. Life support would stop. This is temperature regulation (heating/cooling). In an era where many buildings do not have a fireplace, a winter could be deadly. Water supply would stop. Terraforming facilities would stop working. This would primarily be dams. They would no longer be able to control the water level and might build up enough water to collapse. Particularly the Netherlands, but also quite a number of other places will be flooded when drain pumps stop permanently. All nuclear facilities would be without cooling and all reactors would suffer meltdowns. Chemical industries and similar could also become unstable and leak "interesting" stuff if not downright explode. Over time tanks of all sorts of toxic stuff would start leaking. Many of those events will not take place until after the majority of people have died of thirst and "wrong" temperature. People will usually not last even one week without access to water. If we assume it's just the power grid, which dies, then it will restart. Some powerplants can actually be handcranked to start a small generator, which starts a bigger generator, which starts a bigger... eventually putting the plant back on the grid even without the aid of external power or batteries. Usage of batteries will speed up the process though. Most powerplants can't start themselves and they rely on a system, which pretty much would be described as cars running without batteries and they are jumpstarted from running ones. 5 MW is kind of hard to get from batteries. Recovery from a completely dead grid where all powerplants went offline takes around 8 hours. It might take longer before everybody have restored power. Most years pass without this happening anywhere in the world, but it does happen if somebody is unluckly and all powergrids have emergency plans for such an event. The risk for losing power is greater from a storm, in which case you might also have to wait longer for the power to return, sometimes days. Many people might be surprised to know that wind energy or solar power will not help in case of a blackout. If they do not get 50/60 Hz from a central powerplant, they can't figure out which frequency to produce and they just dies. The standard setup with solar panels on the roof will not feed the house with electricity if you lose the connection to the grid. Like it or not, the power supply is ruled by central powerplants.
  20. I fully agree but the resolution isn't my main issue. The main issue I have with mobile devices is the screen size itself. Sometimes they come up with some great screen technology and can add 4 times as many pixels to the smartphone. However the screen will still be the same size. It's so tiny that watching it gets annoying quickly. To put it mildly, I would rather play a game in 640x400 on a 27" screen than 1920x1080 on a smartphone. Sure I will see the individual pixels, but at least the screen itself will be big enough for me to see it properly and often the resolution is much better than that (can't think of anything but DosBox, which gives you such an ancient resolution today). I don't see the point in mobile gaming. If I'm playing a game at home, there is no point in not using the proper screen. If I'm away from home, I'm usually too busy to play.
  21. You should promote README.md some more. It took me a while to figure out that this is actually the only "website" for telling about what software you wrote. I actually spend a while trying to figure out more than "keeps track of your list of VNs". I looked at the code and git log. The log is equally vague. Like reading the commit descriptions, I have no real clue to what changed in the important commits. Not critical when you have a one digit amount of revisions, but when they get 3-4 digit, you wish for really good descriptions and you might as well practice this now. You know how to code and will likely end up in a big project eventually where the git history will span a very long time. Good call on using git btw. Some people are like "I never used it before, so why now? I can just upload a zip file". Using git correctly and commit one feature at a time really helps if you break something, which used to work. The code looks simple and often strait forward. However it has a tendency to be without comments. Also I can't find any documentation on overall structure. Figuring out anything overall about your code means downloading the whole thing and study the details from the ground to form an overall picture. Hopefully you have an overall picture of it yourself or it might be contributing to people crashing (issues sending data between files or something similar). An overall plan is a very good thing if you write this amount of code. It could also help testing blocks of code individually, which will help to track down bugs. Looks like the VNDB API is being used heavily. That's a very good thing. It greatly reduce the server load on VNDB to send the same data this way than if you would crawl the web pages. When coding network software, be nice to the other end, particularly when it's a web server, which isn't your own. You did precisely what the VNDB faq asks you to do in a case like this (at least that is the impression from what I saw) You should be able to filter on VNDB based on title. Adding by title rather than ID is doable, though it would be even better if you could activate the VNDB search on titles and aliases, including "contains" search and case insensitive. It could be a feature worth asking about in https://vndb.org/t3599 I second this question. I haven't figured out the RJ codes either.
  22. You have actually come quite far and I'm impressed. You seem to be very well in control of the engine part of the VN, meaning you can insert the translation and it will look fine. This can be way more problematic than one might think. You really deserve a translator, but sadly I can't help you with that.
  23. It's much better now. The less bright blue really does wonders and now I can actually stand it and stay long enough to read posts. However sadly I'm not completely free of any reaction in my eyes, even mow a few minutes after reading there. I wonder if that is possible to get rid of without losing the company colors. I'm not sure.
  24. I say it's actually a bit hard to answer that one. The VN is quite linear and the anime does contain most of the VN contents. This mean if you tried one, you sort of know the other one. The main difference is that the VN gives you control of combat (and more combats) while the anime looks a whole lot better. My recommendation is not to go through both right after each other. You need to forget some of the story to get full enjoyment of the other one and this is regardless of order. Both are quite good btw, but they do spoil each other.
