  1. I don't know if there's enough people willing to pledge money to a campaign with such a sketchy start. Never mind doubts about quality, I figured this had to be a scam when I first saw it. Still hoping it is, actually. Pretty sure this will just fail horribly.

I didn't choose translation quality - not because I don't care, I care a lot - but because it's usually not a reason I'll pick a game up, just a reason not to pick a game I'd otherwise have bought. So if there are other people that thought similarly, that may have influenced the ranking a bit, too.
  3. I'm not sure how big a factor that is anymore considering Key announced they'd release one of their titles in English first, even (unless my memory is fucked there). Plus, translating the game is going to take time. Even if they licensed it now, it wouldn't be out before 2017 at least. And one more, I recall a number of MG staff were talking about MB on twitter a fair bit before it got released, but I don't remember them really talking about it again at all after that. Well, that would be consistent with either it getting licensed or not living up to expectations, but I'd like to think it's not the latter considering the game is pretty great. But I could also be entirely wrong, obviously.

I don't think any of the hints would relate to Alicesoft titles considering BBH has only been out for a few days and BBH was supposed to serve as a test for whether their other titles would get licensed. Doesn't mean it's impossible they already decided, perhaps based on pre-order numbers, but it seems unlikely. My personal guess would be Maggot Baits is one of the titles hinted at. It's tagged as Fantasy on vndb, the heroines all have animal ears or similar features and it's in HD - 16:10, strangely enough. There's certainly a healthy dose of wishful thinking in there, though. Which is why I'll just not try to guess at any more titles...

Not sure if I want it to happen right now, either - even ignoring the above issue, there's the question of what kinds of adult VNs Steam would allow. Somehow I think they'd be a lot more likely to carry Princess Evangile's adult version than, say, euphoria or Maggot Baits. Considering that, I think I prefer the current situation for the time being, at least until the VN market outside of Steam grows some more.

The way I learned them is I just copied them down in order, i.e. あえいうおかけきくこ(ry on one page of a notebook, then turned the page and wrote them down again, this time from memory, looking up the ones I couldn't remember. Once I could mostly write them down without looking up more than a few, I started writing them down in different orders, i.e. あかさたなはまやらわん and the reverse for both. It doesn't really take that much concentration to learn them this way, so I used to do that during boring classes that didn't require much attention. Just write them down again and again and again and(ry Then once you've got Hiragana down, do the same for Katakana. It's really not in any way hard, it just takes a little bit of time. As for Japanese in general, my experience has been that the main difficulty is getting the hang of how the grammar works on a basic level. I think Flowers might be the kind of game where a really bad translation actually could noticeably affect sales, at least those of the sequels. It's not like it's "tits, the game" (Sakura et al) or has "uncensored sex" (Kindred Spirits) or anything of the sort.
  11. Best-case scenario: He hadn't taken a single look at the script at any point before this thing blew up and is now actually taking measures to get it fixed. By which I mean delay the release until the quality is at least decent. Doesn't even seem that unlikely, considering that while he might still sell enough copies of this release to turn a profit, I can't see this not putting a noticeable dent into sales of future Flower releases. Plus, I'd be worried about the impact there may be on the willingness of JP companies to release VNs through JAST in general.

  13. ぎゅっと握られる手に顔を上げる。 - "Feeling my hand getting squeezed, I raise my head." (very literally). Could also be her raising her head to look at her hand which is presently getting squeezed, depending on context. Either way, there are no hands touching faces here.

  16. The problem isn't releasing the VN on Steam, it's selling or giving away keys for Steam through venues other than Steam itself. Putting a game, any game on Steam vastly increases the amount of exposure the game gets, simply because of how many users Steam has. It doesn't matter if most Steam users who aren't already into VNs don't take an interest in it when they happen upon it - the small fraction that does is still big enough to sell a significant amount of copies. Significant in terms of Western VN sales, anyway.

Even if the production costs of two games are the same, if you expect to sell 50k copies of one and 10k of the other, the latter will need to be priced much higher to make any profit.

  21. I can't find the part supposed to make me feel sad. As far as the concerns about MG losing money because of this go, true, it would have been nice if they could work with WC. It's not like this will stop WC from producing new games, either, so if you're happy about this because you want to see WC vanish, that seems unlikely to happen anytime soon. But look at it this way: MG took great pains to improve their TL quality. Remember years back when their releases used to feature rather questionable translations? Makes sense that they'd want to avoid being responsible for publishing VNs featuring original English writing of similar quality as their past infamous releases, doesn't it? So if you want to find something to be happy about here, be happy that the reason this happened is quite likely MG caring too much about the quality of their releases to take the WC money.
  22. Pretty sure "creative differences" is a polite way of saying "we can't possibly release this with our name attached" to which WC replied "huh, why, I think this is perfectly fine".
