If we like remove the kissing and sex factor and if we remove the lovey dovey speeches, isn't it mostly two friends hanging out together alone? When I googled it, the exact definition is a social or romantic appointment or engagement. So a 'date' is simply two people hanging out, yes. The latter might be true depending if the lovey dovey parts are serious. I'm guessing it is dependent on the "couple's" take on the matter.
